“Excuse me would you mind switching seats with me,” Effie said from her chair, “my husband Haymitch doesn’t do well sitting next to strangers.”
The young woman scowled. Then glanced at Haymitch who of course hadn’t washed his hair and it looked greasy.
Effie rolled her eyes heavenwards 20 years of marriage and the man hadn’t changed for the better. He’d gotten worse. Effie smiled, “You never know you might meet the love of your life.”
She blinked then glanced at Haymitch who coughed. “Okay.”
Effie sat in the seat the young woman was quite pretty. Effie saw when her eyes widened as she took a look at the young man sitting next to her.
“Hi I’m Peeta,” the blond man said, “Mellark.”
“I’m Katniss Everdeen.”
“So are you going home?”
“Yeah.”
Effie heard the soft way the young woman spoke, the way a young woman spoke when she was smitten with a guy.
“How long were you in France for?”
“A few weeks, my mentor Cinna wanted me to learn about fashion but I’m not artsy.”
He chuckled. “I was studying too. I was at the French Culinary School learning techniques.”
“Haymitch, listen to them they are getting on so well.”
“Effie would you stop snooping.”
“Haymitch, I think this may be the beginning of something beautiful.”
Haymitch rolled his eyes.
Effie took her phone and took pictures of the seat in front of them and posted it to her twitter page with the caption ‘I think I just made a love match…more to come.’
The captain addressed the cabin. “Ladies and gentleman we are next on our flight back home to Atlanta, Georgia. Please make sure your seatbelts are on and the trays are in an upright position.”
The airplane made the turn, the engine revved up and the lights were turned down low as it prepared for takeoff.
“I hate this part,” Katniss whispered.
“If you want you can hold on to me,” Peeta said.
Effie watched as Katniss wrapped her arm around Peeta’s as the airplane shot in the sky.
Peeta asked, “You okay?”
“Yeah,” Katniss squeaked.
Peeta lifted the armrest and put his arm around her shoulders. Effie nearly melted and took a picture. Giddy with his gentlemanly behavior. She posted it with the caption “Chivalry Does Exist.”
About two hours into their flight. They were talking about their lives, it turns out Katniss and Peeta lived just one county over. They went to rival schools. He showed her pictures of his family and friends and she showed him pictures of her sister and the ugliest cat Effie had ever seen.
She posted a picture with the caption, “Getting to know you.”
The seven-hour flight was made better by hearing them talk and her throaty giggle when he said something charming. Effie was in love both of them.
After the dinner service, the food wasn’t good and no one ate it as a result. The options were a green salad that was wilted, the meat was hard. Effie was glad she made Haymitch of buying food for them at the gate.
“Are you hungry?” Peeta asked.
“Starving.”
“Here, I’ve got cheese buns. I was inspired by all of the cheese in Paris.” He handed a container over to her.
Katniss took the offered baked good that smelled delicious even from where Effie sat.
“Mmmmm…”
“Good?”
“So good…” Katniss said
“Here, have some hot cocoa.”
“You’re like a food fairy.”
Peeta laughed, “I just like to be prepared. Besides what type of baker would I be if I didn’t carry my own creations.”
Katniss laughed. “Thank you.”
Effie quickly updated “Sharing is Caring,” with a picture of the box between them.
Peeta asked, “Do you wanna watch a movie?”
“Sure,” Katniss said they gathered in the middle and he put on a movie. Effie couldn’t tell what movie it is because they were both nestled together. Her head was on his shoulder. Before the movie ended she was asleep. Peeta called the steward.
“Yes,” The flight attendant came.
“Can I have a blanket for Katniss, she’s cold.”
Effie wanted to squeal, as he spread the blanket between both of them. Effie got up to use the blanket and snapped a picture of both of them nestled on the plane.
“Effie could you stop,” Haymitch grumbled next to her.
“You’re no fun. You don’t even remember what the word romance means.”
Haymitch didn’t say anything further.
Effie pulled away from him and fell asleep, unlike the couple in the seats in front of them. When she woke up Haymitch was calling her.
“Effie, look they are exchanging numbers.”
Effie blinked. She fumbled with her phone but Haymitch said. “Don’t worry about it sweetheart I took a picture and sent it to your phone.”
Effie sat back as she smiled at Haymitch, these were the times she loved her husband. She posted it with “I’m so Everlarked!” the name she’d come up with a combination of their last names.
Breakfast was served and they shared their food. After the food was taken away Katniss got up to use the bathroom when she came back her hair was flowing freely and not in its braid. Effie heard Peeta say, “Holy mother of pearl she’s gorgeous.”
Effie grinned to herself as she fixed her hair.
“So,” Peeta cleared his throat when the breakfast trays were taken away. “I was hoping you’d go out on a date with me.”
“I would like that,” Katniss voice sounded shy but excited.
“There is a movie playing at Sae’s, I can pick you up or we can meet there.”
“You can pick me up so that you can meet my sister, Prim.”
“I would love that.”
“Haymitch they have a date,” Effie's voice was strangled as she said it.
“Ladies and Gentleman,” the pilot's smooth voice filled the cabin, “thank you for flying with us the current time is 8A.M., we will be landing shortly, at Atlanta Georgia. Please make sure all of your seats are in the upright position and your trays are securely tucked away. On behalf of the cabin and crew, we hope you had a pleasant flight back home and thank you for flying with us.”
Katniss held on to Peeta’s arm as the plane landed. Effie took a picture, with the caption “Holding on to the Last Moment.”
Effie sighed as they came to the gate. In the rush she didn’t see them get off the plane, she and Haymitch arrived last at the baggage claim when Peeta found them.
“Excuse me,” Peeta said looking over his shoulder at Katniss.
“Oh,” Effie exclaimed.
“Thank you for swapping seats. I think we did meet the love of my life.”
“Listen, kid, the day you get married, just call Effie she’s one of high-folutin party planning people. I’m sure she’ll do the job for peanuts.” Haymitch handed Peeta a business card.
Peeta grinned and slipped the card into his back pocket. “Thank you.”
“Do you think they’ll get married?” Effie asked turning to Haymitch.
“The last time I saw a kid looking like that, it was 20 years ago when I found you, Effie.”
