Afgelopen week was nogal druk. Dus zal ik nog eens wat fototjes delen en vertellen wat ik zoal gedaan heb gedurende de week...

Het weekend was zeer vermoeiend. Mijn trip naar Uberlandia begon in de bus... 17 uur in de bus om precies te zijn. Ik ben daar naartoe gereisd omdat een goeie vriend van mij daar woont. Carlos was op uitwisseling in België in het jaar 2016-17. Tijdens dit jaar zaten we bij elkaar in de klas, zijn we een paar keer uit gegaan samen en zijn we vrienden geworden. Nu dat ik in zijn land ben, kan ik het niet laten om dan even bij hem langs te gaan. Om eerlijk te zijn was ik voor men vertrek wat zenuwachtig (en dat ben ik normaal nooit voor een trip) want ja, het is ondertussen al wel twee jaar geleden dat we elkaar gezien hebben. Maar we klikte terug vanaf de eerste seconden. Het voelde alsof ik hem vorige week nog gezien heb. Het was leuk om zijn stad te verkennen en zijn Braziliaanse vrienden/familie te leren kennen. Best grappig hoe we gedurende mijn verblijf constant van Engels naar Nederlands naar Portugees veranderde, maar elkaar toch elke keer verstonden.

Ik was nog maar net terug thuis en de volgende activiteit stond al voor de deur. Catarina en ik zijn al een heel jaar aan het zeggen dat we eens een sleepover moeten doen. Dit weekend was het eindelijk zo ver. We hebben ons goes kunnen amuseren met wat films en lekker eten. Naar natuurlijk kan het geen sleepover zijn zonder dat iemand al in slaap valt tijdens de film. Haar ga ik toch wel het hardste missen als ik terug kom....

Zaterdag had Rotary een uitstap gepland voor de uitwisselstudenten, maar mijn agenda stond al een beetje te vol met de sleepover & in de namiddag het capoeira feest.

Zaterdag was het dus groot feest. Net zoals judo of karate krijg je een gekleurde band bij capoeira. Eerst wat vieren en vechten, dan de test voor de 3 graduanten, wat muziek en een lekker diner om af te sluiten. Ik heb een band gewonnen die anders is dan de anderen. De twee anderen kregen een compleet grijze band, ik een half grijze/half paarse band. Mijn Rotary counselor was mijn Madrina, dus zij heeft mij men band aangegeven na de test.

Zondag was het de laatste meeting voor de Braziliaanse uitwisselstudenten voor volgend jaar. Hier moesten wij als inbounds ook allemaal bij zijn. Na de meeting ben ik met een groepje naar 'Avengers: End Game' gaan zien (weeral 😋). Na de film wou de helft nog nie echt naar huis, dus hebben we er een gezellige slaappartij van gemaakt met zen allen. We hebben spelletjes gespeeld, gegeten, gelachen en gepraat tot bijna 3h 's nachts.

De volgende ochtend (maandag dus..) zijn we naar shopping Catuai gegaan om wat kleren te passen. Daar hebben we samen geluncht en tegen 4h zat ik terug thuis.

Na een volle week met leuke activiteiten mogen we zeker niet vergeten om eens naar school te gaan af en toe.. Dinsdag was het les over vissen & zeevruchten. We hebben een lekker gerecht klaar kunnen maken, maar nadien stonk ik wel een uur in de wind.

Passport Mishap

It’s been an interesting few weeks, to say the least. I took the SAT, and I had to use my passport as a form of ID because I don’t have my license yet. The problem was that I accidentally left my passport at the testing center. I didn’t realize this until I needed to get my papers together to mail to the travel agent. My mom and I called everyone that we could think of. It seemed to be nowhere. The crazy thing is that I don’t ever lose things, so of course, I had to make up for years of keeping track of things by losing the most expensive thing I own. My mom and I were freaking out, so we made an appointment to go to a place in Chicago to try and get me a new passport as soon as possible. Online said that the soonest that I would get my new passport was 7 to 10 business days. The next morning, we got up super early and drove three and a half hours to Chicago. On the way, I was obsessively checking my email to see if my travel agent had emailed me back. Everything went smoothly (except for the huge sum of money that my mom had to give up). We found out that I was going to get my passport later that day! I have family near Chicago, so it was nice to get to see them. Later my mom and I went to get my passport and while we were waiting I checked my email and found that the test proctor had emailed me that she had my passport. It took four days for me to be informed that my passport was found! I was so angry. My passport had already been terminated at that point so there was no way of getting my mom’s hundreds of dollars back. My mom and I were pisssssed! It’s alright though because it looks like nothing is messed up.

(Wednesday, January 9 2019) Hi, this blog is dedicate to my youth exchange via Rotary International. My name is Carl, I am 16 years old right now and live in Northern Germany. This August I will go abroad for a year. I don't know yet which country will be my home for one year, but it will be either Finland, Italy or South Korea (pretty diverse, I know). Eind september, begin november heeft mijn gast vader me meegenomen op een fantastische en onvergetelijke reis naar Minas Gerais. De natuur was er gewoonweg prachtig. Ik denk dat ik in die ene week meer dan 400 foto's genomen heb en enorm veel videoclips gemaakt heb. Na wat vloeken naar men computerscherm is mijn video eindelijk af. Nogmaals bedankt Adriano om mij mee te nemen naar deze prachtige staat in Brazilië!!! 😍🇧🇷

Second Host Family

My second host family contacted me! In my second host family, I have a mom, two sisters, extended family, and a dog. The sister that lives at home will be in Belgium when during the year that I’m in Brazil. My other sister doesn’t live at home. She is married with a child.

The change in families will be interesting to experience. My first family is a nuclear family, with a big house, a sister that lives at home, twice the extended family, and my mom, dad, and sister speak some English. My second family is a single parent household (father has been out of the picture for about 13 years), I will live in an apartment, not as much extended family, my mom doesn’t speak English, and I’ll live in a different town. I’m interested to compare my single-parent household in the USA with a single parent household in Brazil. I am still waiting to hear from my third and final host family.

Even though I’ll live in two different towns during my stay, I’ll stay in the same school. The two towns I will live in are connected by a bridge. I will have a four-hour school day and take Portuguese, English, Spanish, math, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, art and music, philosophy, writing, and grammar.

I can’t wait to start my adventures in Brazil!
