💋 Kanaya
Kanaya hums as she strolls by each other Lalonde, giving them each a kiss as she passes, Roxane got a kiss on the cheek, Roxy a kiss on the lips, and Rose got a lengthier, more intense kiss on the neck. With each kiss the troll left a jade-lipstick mark to show where she kissed, except in the case of Rose who also got a hickey and a few scratches where the jade troll’s fangs had “accidentally” nicked.

Homestuck Name Meanings
Hello! I’ve been doing so many name meaning posts it’s about time I got around to doing Homestuck. I’m getting back to my roots with this.
This is only the kids for now, but make no mistake! I will get around to doing the trolls as well. I get a bit long-winded and in depth with these, you have been warned. If you have any corrections, feel free to let me know; I’d be happy to hear them!
A note before I start: yes, I am aware that Hussie has said that none of these names are short for anything. That doesn’t make it any less true that a lot of these names are diminutives of longer names so those longer names will determine the meaning no matter what the Huss says may or may not being on these characters’ fictional birth certificates.
John Egbert
John is an English name that comes from the Hebrew name יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan), after being filtered through Greek and then Latin as Ιωαννης (Ioannes) and Iohannes, respectively, which means God is gracious. The name John also has multiple variations in just about any language you can think of, though that isn’t related to the meaning. I just find it interesting that you could conceivably write a book where every character was named some form of John and still have variants left over.
Egbert means bright edge and comes from two Old English words: ecg, meaning the edge of a sword, and beorht, meaning bright. Throughout history it’s been used as both a first name and a surname.
Rose Lalonde
This name first started getting used in England as Roese and Rohese because of the Normans. It was derived from the Germanic words hrod, meaning fame, and heid, meaning kind, sort, or type. Overtime, this name continued to be associated with the flower rose, coming from the Latin word rosa, until this association eclipsed the original meaning and the name became simply Rose.
Lalonde is a French name, though it’s derived from an Old Norse word. The ‘londe’ part of Lalonde comes from the word lundr which means grove, and the ‘la’ is a definite article. That together makes Lalonde mean the grove.
Dave Strider
Dave is a shortened form of the name David. David is an Anglicization of the Hebrew name דָּוִד (Dawid) which comes from the word דוד (dwd), meaning beloved.
Strider could be seen as a reference to Aragorn from Lord of the Rings, whose sometimes referred to as Strider, especially given Dave’s habit of holding broken swords. Strider could also mean one who strides. The definition of to stride, according to the Merriam-Webster dicitonary, is to move with or as if with long steps.
Jade Harley
Jade obviously refers to the pretty green stone, jade. The word comes from the Spanish phrase “piedra de la ijada” meaning “stone of the flank” because it was believed that jade stones could cure colic.
Harley comes from a couple Old English words. Hara, meaning hare, and leah, meaning woodland or clearing. So Harley would mean a woodland jackrabbit. However, we know that in Homestuck Harley is actually a mispronunciation of the name Halley. That changes the Old English word to heall, which means hall, and leah stays the same.
Jane Crocker
Remember how I said that John has a metric fuckton of variations? Well Jane is one of them. It’s the Medieval French form of the name Jehanne, which is the feminine Old French version of Iohannes, which is itself the Latin form of the Greek name Ιωαννης (Ioannes), and then that finally traces back to יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan). So, Jane means God is gracious.
Crocker is a very very old way of saying potter. There’s nothing else to it.
Jake English
Jake can be either a Medieval variant of the name Jack or a shortened form of the name Jacob. Buckle up, we’re in for a long one. Jack comes from Jackin or Jankin which come from, drumroll please, John! I don’t want to go through that whole thing again so let’s just say it means God is gracious, the third one. Now for the other one. Jacob comes from the Latin name Iacobus which is from Ιακωβος (Iakobos) in Greek. That name comes from יַעֲקֹב (Ya'aqov), a Hebrew name that is said to mean holder of the heel or supplanter, though some theorize that it’s derived from יַעֲקֹבְאֵל (Ya'aqov'el) which means may God protect.
English just…means English. I don’t know what else I’m supposed to say. The Crockerlishes have John names and simple surnames.
Roxy Lalonde
Roxy is a nickname for Roxana, the Latin form of the Greek name Ρωξανη (Roxane). Ρωξανη comes form the Persian and Bactrian name روشنک (Roshanak) which means bright or dawn.
Please refer to Rose’s part for the meaning of Lalonde so I don’t have to copy that down here and be redundant.
Dirk Strider
Dirk is the shortened form of the name Diederik. Diederik is the Dutch form of the name Theodoric. Theodoric is an old Germanic name that means ruler of the people. The parts that make up the whole of Theodoric are theud, which means people, and ric, which means power or ruler. A dirk is also a kind of dagger.
See Dave’s section for the meaning of Strider.
WOO! That was the fastest I’ve ever written one of these. Probably because there are a lot less characters in this one than I usual do and I had a ton of motivation! I’ll be doing more of these so be on the look out!

Ficcish Thing: Wanting to Give (As Good As You Got) 4/?
Somewhat based on Melt Me, Mold Me by BirchBow and also on Gotta Like What You Do by silverpaper_toffeepaper  Continuing from here.
Dave continues to settle into harem life, which is full, top to bottom with politics Dave does not actually care about, but turn out to be vitally important to the running of Karkat Vantas’ territory.
A lot of espionage is happening; a lot of analysis of information and management of security is happening in the confines of the harem, and the concupiscent chiefs the conciliatory chiefs have agents working outside the harem doing their thing to keep Vantas in power.
Dave’s reaction when he learns this is: “whut?”
“How in the hell can we be expected to advise him if we don’t know what’s going on outside the harem?” Eridan asks.
“Yeah well, excuse me if I didn’t realize y’all were data analysts.”
“To be fair it’s a lot more formalized for us than in other harems,” Kanaya says.
Dave does not have a role in this, which he is fine with.
The other concubines are warming up to him a little, though it’s a grudging sort of thing. Dave has actual musical and artistic talent, and even if he tends to mumble to himself, what he says is occasionally entertaining.
Dave has some bad days and wakes up with Gamzee or Kanaya checking in on him. Dave is disinclined to talk about these bad days, but is content to rap with Gamzee or be a living dressform for Kanaya.
Karkat finds out about the daymares because someone tattles and Dave is made very uncomfortable because of the fussing. Dave does not want to talk about his nightmares or his feelings for the titillation of troll pity glands.
He ends up talking about his feelings anyway.
Troll influenza goes through the harem because of course it does, and is communicable to humans because of course it is. Dave is hit particularly hard and ends up in the infirmary. Vantas fusses over him and the three others hardest hit by the disease. (Gamzee, Eridan, and some dude from the spade harem.)
Let’s add in some worldbuilding here.
If you haven’t figured it out yet there is no Alternian Empire in this universe. There is no Empress. Instead we have a bunch of little warlords fighting over the remains of the Empire in bitty little kingdoms.
That there all this fighting and conquering going on and no central authority to blame it on may or may not be worse than the Empire that preceded it depending on whether or not the Grand Highasswipe and the Grand Pirate-Admiral Dipshit just crossed your borders with their stupid freaking pitch conquistadecimator shenanigans this week.
There was an Empress but she’s been gone for centuries. Or hundredsweeps.
Once upon a time there was an Alternian Empire and they went up against the Human Empire
Which was actually a bunch of human and alien/human polities spread over a quarter of the galactic arm they were situated in but never mind that.
And a brilliant biogeneticist and an equally brilliant social engineer looked upon the Alternian Empire and decided that the only thing holding the Empire together was the Empress’ control of the means of reproduction.
(In this universe the Empress does not have a horrorterror lusus, since there is also no Doc Scratch since he’s the one that provided the trolls with an Emissary First Guardian. No one has any fear of a Vast Glub. They are mostly concerned that all of the eggs are literally in one basket.)
And on the advice of the brilliant social engineer the brilliant biogeneticist  started a program to reverse engineer and breed multiple Mothergrubs
The plan was to give these Mothergrubs to troll rebel groups that would be much better neighbors than the current Empire, and destabilize it.
The plan was a smashing success with emphasis on the smashing. The Empire broke into pieces which the social engineer intended, but all those little pieces were constantly at war with each other due to the pressures of hundredsweeps of societal dysfunction. Which the social engineer (mostly) didn’t intend.
But the broken Empire made it somewhat easier to deal with trolls, in that they weren’t very organized, but much harder, in that there wasn’t any central authority with which to make piece treaties with.
So, it’s been sweeps, and all the little warring groups have started to slowly coalesce into larger warring groups, and the main Uniter of Warring Groups is currently one Karkat Vantas.
Skaia Union is one of the larger human polities nearest to where Karkat is gaining power. And they are Curious. And also very Worried.
Is Vantas a threat? Is Vantas a possible ally? Is Vantas just going to be a flash and sizzle in the galactic pan? So Skaia Union sends feelers asking about the possibility of sending envoys.
And Karkat is pretty curious about this, so he sends feelers back. Words are exchanged, messages and tentative agreements to meet.
A diplomatic team is sent, headed by a James Egbert, who arrives with his Matesprit: Roxane LaLonde.

AU: royalty. Pairing: JaneRoxy
I wasn’t sure what to do with this one, due to lack of more of an idea of what you wanted, like a word or phrase, so have the Chosen One au I’m not working on yet. I am not very good at shippy so the shippy is mostly implied. :D
The messenger is a bronze blooded troll whose horns end in two inward and several outward facing prongs. He wears the black enameled armor and red surcoat of one of the Empress’ high ranking officers. It’s a very odd sight to your eyes; you had never heard of a bronze-blooded knight, let alone a bronze blood who was an officer of the imperial army. He meets meets the four of you in a private audience chamber. “Your Majesties, I bring you a list of those who may be ransomed.” He hands a scroll to a human knight, who presents it to you. “This is of course on top of the fines and sanctions for breaking your oaths as Alternian Vassal States.”
You read through the list. There are a hundred names on the list many familiar to you, but your cousin John’s is not among them. Nor his friends Rose, Dave and Jade. Roxane, reading over your shoulder, clutches your arm, the only sign of her fear as she realizes what you do. You hand the scroll to your Uncle, his Highness Jean of Skaia, who goes pale and hands it to Roxane’s cousin, his Highness Dirk of Derse. His hands clutch the scroll, and his jaw tightens, the only signs of his anger. “What of my brother?” he asks.
“Dave Strider and Rose Lalonde of Derse, Jade Harley of Prospit and the so-called Chosen Heir John Egbert of Skaia will remain in Alternia under the merciful hand of Her Imperious Consolation, She Who Calms the Storm, Chosen of the One Who Was Lifted Up, Chosen of the One Who Spoke, Chosen of the Breaker of Chains Feferi Peixes to ensure that you pay the aforementioned fines and ransoms.”
“Will they be returned to us?” Jean asks.
“That would be better discussed with the Empress’ emissaries, who will be arriving within a few days time,” the messenger says. “I’m told to say that they have not been harmed, and will not be as long as you treat with the Empress’ emissaries.” The messengery bows and turns to go without taking leave. (A gesture of absolute cocky rudeness that makes the knight who escorted him–Joey Claire– glare furiously.)
“Wait,” Roxane says suddenly.
The messenger stops, but doesn’t turn to face you. “Princess of Derse?” he asks politely.
“You called Jane’s cousin the so-called Chosen Heir, and made allusions to the Prophecy of the Chosen Heir,” she says.
You frown at her. This is no time to discuss a prophecy. (Even though the most recent defeat at the hands of the empire had been because of the the prophecy. All the more reason not to pay such things any mind!) At the same time you’re just as curious about these new titles: “Consolation,” “…Who Calms the Storm.”
“Princess of Derse, the Queen of Prospit’s cousin John Egbert is not the Chosen Heir of the prophecy. That role belonged to Her Imperial Consolation, who fulfilled the prophecy in all respects.”
“That’s impossible,” Roxane says.
The messenger shrugs. “I am only a humble bronzeblood, I don’t know much of anything, except I was there when she calmed the storm.” With that he leaves, ignoring Roxane’s questions.
She slumps in her chair when he’s gone, saying something to Dirk in Dersite you don’t quite catch. She’s using the royal dialect, which she’s still teaching you. Something about divination and crows. “That’s impossible Roxy, he’s lying.” Dirk says, also in Dersite, though in the common dialect that you’re more familiar with.
“What if the omens were wrong? What if Rose was wrong? She’s strong but–”
Dirk snaps something back at her, something about Dave, and she replies in kind, glaring.
“Your Highnesses, this isn’t helping,” your uncle says firmly. Dirk and Roxy silence themselves, though not without grumbling about Uncle’s tone. “My apologies Prince, Princess,” he says kindly. “But I didn’t feel this dispute was constructive to the issue at hand, mostly because you didn’t bother explaining the dispute.” He looks over at Roxy. “Now, are you suggesting that this new Empress is the Chosen One of the Prophecy.”
Roxane shakes her head. “No. I’m more worried that John wasn’t the Chosen One after all.”
“But the omens pointed toward John,” your uncle says, frowning.
“We thought they did! Rose was so sure of it. The white raven and the white cat, John’s talent with weather magics,” Roxy says.
“Dave, Jade and Rose all fit the requirements of the ones who identify the Chosen one,” Dirk points out.
“Can we really be sure?” Roxane says. “They failed.”
“You put too much faith in the prophecy,” you say. Roxy gives you a look that’s half angry half grieving, and you instantly feel terrible. “I’m sorry Roxy,” you tell her guiltily. “You know I can’t put my faith in such things.”
“We sent an army at their back,” your uncle says with a frown. “That’s hardly putting too much faith in the prophecy.”
“What do we do now?” Dirk asks. “Just wait for the Empress’ emmissaries to dangle the promise of our heirs being returned if we fall back in line, let them beggar our kingdoms?”
“Do you have an alternative?” your uncle asks.
Dirk is silent for a moment, then he shakes his head. “I want to say fight. It’s…I think it’s what my ancestor would say. He fought and kept fighting even when he and his queen were dragged before the Empress in chains. But he died. I don’t want to risk Dave dying, or Rose.” He glances up at you. “I don’t want to risk anything happening to any of our children.” He says something in the royal dialect to Roxy, and she says something in return.
“You’re not a coward,” Roxy repeats in Prospitian. “If you didn’t think first about our children I’d never forgive you and you know it.”
