Roy / Keeley break up theory

After thinking about it a lot today after S3E3, I'm convinced of a theory I have for Roy & Keeley breaking up, because it's more than what they've been saying yet they seem to respect each other and are still obviously in love.

My theory is that Roy does not want to be a father (& maybe doesn’t believe in marriage) and perhaps Keeley discussed her desire for an eventual family. Here’s my thoughts:

1. Perhaps Roy & Keeley DID have conversations about their future & that’s why they broke up but we weren't shown them to keep us in the dark so they can reveal it later and create tension/confusion.

2. Neither ever spoke about marriage or children until Ms. Bowen asked Roy point blank & he didn’t have an answer.

3. One of the show's major themes is fatherhood & it has pointedly shown how Roy would be a great father through raising Phoebe, his acceptance and now mentoring of Jamie, his ability to inspire the team and recognize individual strengths (Sam, Isaac, etc.). However, Roy himself has never said a word about fatherhood.

4. Roy had a rough childhood & lost what may be his best parental figure at nine.

5. He likely feels abandoned by his parents (not confirmed but one would assume leaving home at nine would do this).

6. His sister’s ex is a horrible father. And most people around him are divorced.

7. His father is “a little bit racist”.

8. He believes he’s infecting Phoebe with the worst part of him.

9. Most of all & because of all this, he has self-worth issues.

10. Also, there might be other reasons for Roy's self-worth issues that haven't yet been revealed.

The show is keeping their break-up shrouded except for the fact that Roy broke it off with Keeley and that he has self-worth issues. He was only ever supportive of Keeley's work. So if they've talked about their future & if Keeley indicated she wanted to marry & eventually have a child/family, Roy would have been honest & said he didn’t want children. Keeley would be ready to compromise somehow, but likely Roy won’t budge. Keeley accepts this but now that Roy knows what she wants, he can’t in good conscience stay with her and he slowly shuts down, suggesting to step away so she can find someone who has the same goal.

Keeley will, of course, say that’s not necessary, but we know Roy. So Keeley suggests a temporary break but with Roy it’s all or nothing. So yes, it does stem from self-worth issues but he won’t discuss it, can’t admit it.

Either he won’t tell her why he doesn’t want kids or he uses all the reasons above except for the fact he thinks he’d be awful at it. He wants only the best for Keeley, he wants her to be happy and he feels he can’t give that to her.

Rebecca knows but she can only respect him for letting Keeley go because Rebecca would have appreciated a man like that, so she's not interfering.

So we’re stuck with them desperately in love but, yes, because Roy can’t open up, they can’t really deal with it. Ultimately, Roy actually does want children but he's terrified of his impact on them. He needs help.

I realize Keeley hasn't said anything about children, but I figure the break up has to be about something fundamental where they both respect each other's opinions but don't want to share why with others. It's very personal/private.

I'm open to other ideas, it's just one theory.

Roy Keeley Finale Thoughts

I was definitely disappointed by the way their story ended in the finale

I thought Roy could have done a lot more work on himself this season which would have brought him to a place where he was able to be with Keeley (and she would be ready to take him back)

Jamie wanting Keeley back came a little out of nowhere and it really felt like a regression

Of course Keeley should have kicked them out when they asked her to choose but I really wish they just wouldn't have done that

Considering that that's what happened, and that Roy clearly wasn't done working on himself, I'm glad at least to see he was in therapy and that gives me hope for him and Keeley in the future

I think there were 2 hints in the finale montage that they are back together/will get back together eventually:

Phoebe's drawing that Roy hung up in his office. Since she drew it when Roy and Keeley were together, it's possible it's a drawing of Keeley? Plus the tape over it seems to be a parallel to the picture Jamie had of Keeley in his cubby that Ted put tape over. Therefore I think it's meant to represent Keeley.
