Impressive and completely useless invention

🛡 Gun-shield from the armoury of Henry VIII, c. 1544-1550

Artist: Giovanbattista of Ravenna

Medium: steel, iron, wood, leather, fabric

Measurements: 30.1 x 46.5 cm

This is a rare, experimental combination of shield and a weapon. The gunsmith Giovanni Battista of Ravenna proposed this gun shield to King Henry VIII of England in 1544. Interested in technology, the king had 100 made for his bodyguards.

To fire, the gunner had to hold the shield with his left forearm, aim through the grill and pull a lever with his right hand.

As a firearm, it was too heavy to aim unless rested on a support and was rejected for use.

Every single time that I visit the #RoyalArmouries in #Leeds, I find myself drawn to the Hall of #Steel. I find this display captivating, perfect, #beautiful and just something that I want to look at. It fills me with a sense of awe, it appeals to my artistic eye in terms of its #symmetry and #perspective, and it is something that I always want to go back to, to take yet another #photograph, to get neck ache staring at. Considering that the display is largely of instruments that were designed to kill people, I find this sight quite inspiring and #spectacular. #37 ROYAL ARMOURIES This was actually from the Tower of London, where a friend of mine works. It shows the unofficial symbol of the Royal Armouries, a totally bizarre grotesque helmet from the early 16th century with horns, spectacles and piercing leer.
