Nobody's Soldier (Book 1) Chapter Four
Found Family! Supernatural x Teen! Reader
Chapter Four: Psychic Reading
Summary: The Winchesters and Bobby take (Y/N) to Pamela, a psychic. Things go...weird.
“Bobby!” A woman with dark hair and a big grin opened the door of the little house happily. She instantly hugged him. “Rrr!” She lifted him off the ground from the force.
“You’re a sight for sore eyes,” said Bobby, smiling.
“So, are these the boys?” said Pamela, looking over Sam and Dean.
“Sam, Dean, Pamela Barnes,” said Bobby. “Best damn psychic in the state.”
Cool, thought (Y/N).
“Hey,” said Dean.
“Hi,” said Sam.
“And this must be the kid hunter you told me about,” said Pamela.
“I’m (Y/N),” said (Y/N).
“Just keeping an eye on them for now,” said Bobby.
“Mm.” Pamela hummed and looked at them. She smiled slightly. “Someone cares about you.” She gestured to the necklace around (Y/N)’s neck. “Spirit quartz is supposed to protect people.”
(Y/N) touched the stone. “My parents gave it to me.”
“Interesting,” said Pamela. She looked around (Y/N) as if seeing something they couldn’t and then grinned. She looked at Bobby. “You always bring me some fun. A man pulled from Hell and a kid with fireworks for an aura.” She stepped back. “Come on in.”
(Y/N) frowned. I don’t know enough about auras to understand what’s going on.
“So, hear anything?” said Bobby.
“Well, I Ouija-ed my way through a dozen spirits,” said Pamela. “No one seems to know who broke your boy out or why.”
“Soo, what’s next?” asked Bobby.
“A séance, I think,” said Pamela. “See if we can see who did the deed.” She nodded to (Y/N). “Or we try to get answers about if demons are going to come after them.”
“Kid first,” said Bobby. “We don’t know what is going to come up about Dean.”
“Hey,” said Dean.
“Kid’s the safer start,” said Bobby.
“He’s right, Dean,” said Sam. “And the sooner we figure out if there’s a demon trying to finish off their family, the sooner we can help them and get them somewhere safe.”
(Y/N) furrowed their brow, and Pamela noticed. She grinned in amusement. “Come on, kiddo. Let’s get this started.”
She led them to a room at the back of her house, and the group followed, looking around at the randomized collection of decorations. Bobby pulled the curtains shut, throwing the room into darkness, and Pamela threw a tablecloth over a round table. Sewn securely onto the cloth was a pentacle—a symbol of protection.
Pamela crouched to grab some candles, and Dean not-so-subtly noticed that she had a tattoo reading “Jesse Forever” on her back.
“Who’s Jesse?” he asked.
Pamela chuckled and straightened. “Well, it wasn’t forever.”
“His loss,” said Dean.
Sam rolled his eyes, and (Y/N) found themself doing the same.
“Might be your gain,” said Pamela, smirking.
“Dude, I’m so in,” said Dean.
“Yeah, she’s going to eat you alive,” scoffed Sam.
“Hey, I just got out a jail, bring it,” said Dean.
“You’re invited, too,” said Pamela to Sam, grinning.
Sam laughed as Dean pointed at him and said, “You’re not invited.”
“Sit down, (Y/N),” said Pamela, winking as Dean squabbled with his brother.
(Y/N) couldn’t honestly tell whether she was joking around with Dean and Sam or not, but they weren’t there to judge. So, (Y/N) obeyed, sitting at a chair pulled to one of the pentacle’s star points. Pamela lit the candles and gestured for everyone to sit. Bobby, Pamela, Sam, and Dean completed each of the five corners.
In the shadowed room, silence descended while Pamela took a deep breath. She exhaled, and the sound echoed slightly.
“Take each other’s hands,” instructed Pamela.
(Y/N) took one of hers and one of Sam’s. Sam held Dean’s on the other side, and then it was Bobby. The candles flickered on the table and caught the indigo gleam of (Y/N)’s necklace.
“Spirits beyond the veil,” said Pamela, eyes closed. She spoke with no jest now, completely somber. “I speak to you. I command you to speak in return.”
A soft whisper passed beside (Y/N)’s ear, and they stiffened.
“This child—” Pamela’s eyes opened, and they looked at (Y/N) “—(Y/N) (L/N). They’ve come in search of answers from their recently departed parents. They remain in danger. Speak now so we may understand—”
The candle flames flickered and turned a deep purple. Bobby, Sam, and Dean stared at the fire and then at (Y/N), who was equally confused.
“You cannot speak with them; they do not hear,” said Pamela, speaking to unseen beings.
Are…my parents here? thought (Y/N), eyes widening. Their heart ached acutely, the pain surging through them with renewed strength.
“Yes. They are protected by hunters,” said Pamela.
The flames dulled back to gold but continued flickering. Dean and Sam exchanged looks as the candles spoke with the words of the spirits only Pamela could comprehend.
“The demons that killed you. Why did they do it?” asked Pamela. She frowned, and again the wind whistled beside all of them, hiding all the words of the veil. “Seals…Corrupt a child…Corrupt the innocence of the power of this world.”
The supernatural world? thought (Y/N).
“Seals?” said Dean.
Bobby shrugged at Dean. Sam furrowed his brow and looked at (Y/N). Their gaze remained on the candles.
“Are they still in danger?” said Pamela.
The flames flared upwards, and the candles wept wax from the intense heat. “ALWAYS” flickered in the flames.
Always.
(Y/N) would always be in danger. They ignored the questioning and pitying looks landing on them. They let go of Sam’s hand as Pamela opened her eyes, sensing something. (Y/N) leaned forward.
“Whoa—” interrupted Sam.
(Y/N) ignored him, and their fingers brushed the candleflames. A subtle soot touched their fingertips, but they felt no heat. Closing their eyes, they spoke. “Thank you. I love you.”
The flames flickered a final moment before dying down. (Y/N) pulled their hand back, still unharmed. Their parents had protected them in their final moments of contact. They would return to the other side of the veil now.
“Is…that it?” said Dean uncertainly, looking at Pamela and at (Y/N).
“They said all they could,” said Pamela.
“So, the demons killed their parents because of some ‘seal?’ ” repeated Bobby. “Are you sure they didn’t say spell?”
“Would you like to try being a psychic and tell me how to do my job?” asked Pamela, leaning on her elbows.
Bobby raised his hands. “Just asking.”
“They said seal,” said Pamela. “(Y/N), do you know what that means?”
(Y/N) shook their head. “No.”
“What was the second part about?” asked Dean. “The ‘corruption’ thing?”
“Their demon said the demons needed to corrupt a child. Steal their innocence of the world,” said Pamela.
“And murdering—” (Y/N) voice hitched on the word, but they swallowed and continued strongly “—my parents would make me understand that the world is darker than I could know.”
Pamela’s gaze softened, and she nodded. “Yes. Symbols are just as powerful as literal interpretations of rituals.”
“But the demons are still after them,” said Sam. “Shouldn’t they be done with them?” His brow was furrowed, mind somewhere else no matter how he spoke to the group.
“The demons tried to kill me because they didn’t need me anymore,” said (Y/N) softly. “Whatever a seal is, they had done what they needed to, so I was just…there. I might not be important enough to look for.” They looked at Pamela. “Did they…say why I was in danger?”
Their mother had spoken as if she knew (Y/N) would be going through a thousand challenges in their life. Was it just the demons? The supernatural world as whole? Something else? (Y/N) was terrified, and they desperately wanted their mom to hold them tight and tell them everything was going to be okay.
“No,” said Pamela, regretful that she didn’t have an answer. Their parents had just been insisting of danger and pressing onto Pamela how important it was for them to be protected. “But they were certain you’re in danger. Permanent danger.” She looked at Bobby. “And I’m not a parent, but I’m guessing they’re pretty serious if they literally used their last words to protect their child.”
(Y/N)’s heart clenched. They swallowed hard and nodded. “Thanks, Pamela.”
What else was there to say? They still had no direction, and the minute Dean decided to remind everyone they needed to leave them somewhere “safe,” (Y/N) would be on their own to face the world. The Winchesters and Bobby didn’t have any responsibility to (Y/N), they knew that, but at least for now they weren’t alone. Once they were…the dangers awaiting them could swallow them whole, and (Y/N) had no idea how to deal with them.
“It’s probably the usual ‘once you’re in the life, there’s only one way out’ your parents are worried about,” said Bobby. “They meant to teach you, and now…”
“Right.” Clearing their throat, (Y/N) looked at Dean. “Your turn for a séance.”
Dean looked at the candles that had been dancing just a few minutes earlier. “I don’t think I can put on a better show, but let’s try it anyway.”
“C’mon,” said Pamela. “Switch with (Y/N). I need to touch what our mystery monster touched.”
Dean grinned and wiggled his eyebrows at Sam as he switched with (Y/N). Sam rolled his eyes and sighed. Fortunately, Dean had the sense to lower the shoulder of his flannel and roll up his t-shirt to reveal the branded handprint on his arm.
Pamela nodded and put her hand over it. She took Bobby’s hand again, and everyone held hands again. Pamela closed her eyes, and (Y/N) followed suit. Dean just watched everyone, slightly uncomfortable (nervous) to discover what had pulled him from Hell and for what purpose.
This time, Pamela spoke in a searching manner. She was accustomed to spirits, but what she was about to attempt required more strength and focus. “I invoke, conjure, and command you—appear unto me before this circle. I invoke, conjure, and command you—appear unto me before this circle. I invoke, conjure, and command you—appear unto me before this circle.”
A shiver ran down (Y/N)’s spine. A moment after, they heard static from the nearby TV, and the eerie, high-pitched ringing returned to piece their ears. The table shook beneath their hands. Whatever this being was, it was powerful.
“Castiel?” asked Pamela. “No, sorry, Castiel, I don’t scare easy.” She spoke with brave certainty.
“Castiel?” said Dean.
“Its name,” said Pamela, intensely focused. “It’s whispering to me, warning me to turn back.”
(Y/N) furrowed their brow. A warning…did it mean harm then if it was telling her of danger? (Y/N) wasn’t sure about how monsters usually operated, but they had questions.
“I conjure and command you—show me your face,” said Pamela. The table shook. “I conjure and command you—show me your face! I conjure and command you—show me your face!” The violent shaking of the table had everyone opening their eyes except for Pamela. “I conjure and command you—”
“Maybe we should stop,” said Bobby warily.
“I almost got it,” said Pamela fiercely, determined.
“I command you—show me your face!” said Pamela. “Show me your face now!”
Upon her forceful command, the candles flared upwards. Fire shot towards the ceiling, and Pamela screamed. As the candles shone violently, her eyes began to glow and then burn. Abruptly, the candles and the light died. Pamela slumped backwards out of her chair.
(Y/N) stood up, eyes wide. Sam and Dean scrambled from their chairs in shock, and Bobby moved to Pamela’s side. Sam grabbed his phone and dialed 9-1-1 instantly. Bobby supported Pamela, and (Y/N) looked at her eyes in shock. Burn marks spread around the orbital bone, and blood dripped down her cheeks like tears. Pamela’s eyes had been burned out of her head.
She sobbed. “I can’t see! I can’t see!”
Dean looked up from her face to Bobby. (Y/N) looked at Dean, eyes wide. Whatever had pulled him from Hell was dangerous.
“Oh, god!” sobbed Pamela.
l
(Y/N) barely listened to Dean ordering at the diner as they stared at Sam’s face while on the phone. Was Pamela doing alright? Did the hospital treat her well? Was there anything wrong with her other than her eyes? There was no telling what this creature—this “Castiel”—was capable of.
“Yeah, you bet,” said Sam, closing his phone and sitting down.
“How’s Pamela?” asked (Y/N), leaning forward instantly.
“Pam’s stable and out of ICU,” said Sam.
“And blind ‘cause of us,” said Dean, frustration written all over his face.
“And we still have no clue what we’re dealing with,” said Sam. “Or what to do with you.” He gestured to (Y/N).
“Teach me to hunt so I don’t immediately get killed knowing about monsters?” suggested (Y/N).
“No,” said Sam.
(Y/N) huffed.
“We got a name,” said Dean. “Castiel or whatever. With the right mumbo jumbo, we could summon him, bring him right to us.”
“You’re crazy. Absolutely not,” said Sam.
“We’ll work him over,” said Dean forcefully. “I mean, after what he did?”
“Pam took a peek at him, and her eyes burned out of her skull,” argued Sam. “And you want to have a face-to-face?”
“You got a better idea?” challenged Dean.
“Yeah, as a matter of fact, I do,” said Sam. “I followed some demons to town, right?”
“Okay?” said Dean.
“So we go find them,” said Sam. “Someone’s got to know something about something.”
“He’s got a point. If you can get information without getting too close to the real issue, you might be safer.” (Y/N) narrowed their eyes. “Only a little. Demons are dicks.”
“Language,” said Dean and Sam.
(Y/N) rolled their eyes.
The waitress arrived back at their table and set pieces of pie down in front of all three. Then, she herself sat down. Sam, Dean, and (Y/N) looked at her, confused.
“You angling for a tip?” said Dean.
“I’m sorry.” The woman wore a pleasant but slightly mischievous smile. “I thought you were looking for us.” She blinked, and her eyes turned black. A demon.
Sam and Dean tensed. (Y/N) stiffened, and anger flamed within their chest as the image of their parents at the mercy of demons surged to the forefront of their mind. Around the diner, several more people stood, eyes turning black. The only humans were the Winchesters and (Y/N). One of the demons walked to the door and locked it, turning back to face them. They were trapped.
“Dean,” said the woman, eyes back to a human shade. “To Hell and back. Aren’t you a lucky duck?”
“That’s me,” said Dean coldly.
“So, you get to just stroll out of the pit, huh?” said the woman, sneering slightly. “Tell me, what makes you so special?”
“I like to think it’s because of my perky nipples,” said Dean with a smirk, pleased with himself. The demon stared at him, unimpressed. Dean scowled. “I don’t know. It wasn’t my doing. I don’t know who pulled me out.”
“Right,” scoffed the demon. “You don’t.” Clearly, she didn’t believe him.
“No, I don’t,” repeated Dean forcefully.
“Lying’s a sin, you know,” said the demon.
(Y/N) remained silent, knowing Dean wasn’t lying but not wanting to make the situation worse by provoking a demon.
“I’m not lying,” said Dean.
The demon glanced at Sam and then (Y/N), trying to read their faces to see if they would give away if he was lying.
“So if you wouldn’t mine enlightening me, Flo,” prompted Dean, trying to turn the questions back on her to get answers.
“Mind your tone with me, boy,” said “Flo,” as Dean had dubbed the diner demon. “I’ll drag you back to Hell myself.”
Sam’s chair scraepd against the ground as he went to stand. The harsh sound cut the tension, and (Y/N)’s hand went towards their pocket where their knife rested. Would it be pointless against a demon? Probably. But they wouldn’t just stand there.
Dean held up a hand, and Sam paused. The demon glanced at him warily, but Sam settled, listening to his brother’s silent instruction. He didn’t look happy, though. Sam’s anger rested barely below the surface, eager to be let out.
“No, you won’t,” said Dean, looking at Flo.
“No?” challenged Flo.
“No,” said Dean confidently. “ ‘Cause if you were, you’d have done it already. The fact is, you don’t know who cut me loose. And you’re just as spooked as we are. And you’re looking for answers.”
(Y/N) watched the self-important demon’s face fall and noticed the others shift slightly. Dean had called them out and seen the truth.
“Well, maybe it was some turbocharged spirit, hm?” suggested Dean. “Or, uh, Godzilla. Or some big, bad boss demon. But I’m guessing at your pay grade that they don’t tell you squat. ‘Cause whoever it was, they want me out…and they’re a lot stronger than you.” He surged her gaze and watched Flo swallowed—a tell. “So go ahead. Send me back. But don’t come crawling to me when they show up on your front doorstep.”
“I’m gonna reach down your throat and rip out your lungs,” said Flo, voice low.
Dean smirked slightly and leaned towards her. She didn’t move.
Slap!
Dean hit across the face. Flo straightened, and Dean slapped her again. Still, she could only swallow and not act.
“That’s what I thought,” said Dean. “Let’s go, Sam, (Y/N).”
(Y/N) and Sam quickly stood. (Y/N) was eager to leave the diner (if they had a weapon they knew would work against demons, then they would be eager for something slightly different, but they weren’t stupid).
Dean pulled the door firmly shut behind them as they walked out onto the street. “Holy crap that was close,” he said.
“If that was a bluff, it was amazing,” said (Y/N).
Dean grinned proudly.
“We’re not just gonna leave them in there, are we, Dean?” said Sam angrily.
“Well, yeah,” said Dean incredulously. “There’s three of them, probably more. We’ve only got one knife between us.”
(Y/N) perked up. “You have a knife that works on demons?”
“Yeah,” said Dean casually.
“Dean, stop telling them things,” said Sam. “They have a chance to get out of the life.”
“That ship has sailed,” said (Y/N).
Sam groaned. “We need to do something about the demons. They are dangerous.”
“They’re scared, okay?” said Dean. “Scared of whatever had the juice to yank me out. We’re dealing with a bad mofo here. One job at a time.”

Can I ask for Jess Bradford’s full story? Also I love you Jess, you can always call me I’m single ;)
“My full story..?” Jess answers, “Oh, I don't know. Things were awfully complicated after Billy was discovered. I couldn’t possibly tell it all in one sitting, but I could certainly share an important detail or two?”
Billy, who’s been stuck to Jess throughout most of the party, perks up. He tilts his head at her. “G... Give em a r-rrr-rundown...?”
The three of you make your way over to one of the many sitting areas. Jess chooses a couch and takes her place, only for Billy to steal up the spot directly beside her. She turns her attention to you and smiles, offering you the seat across from them.
Once you’re comfortably seated -- and after a moment of contemplation -- she presses her hands together, lacing her fingers and gesturing as she offers you her gentle explanation.
“Do you remember when the police came to the sorority house? The night of the murders? I'm told that was the last part that you were able to see.
After everyone left, when they believed I was alone in the house, I wasn't. Billy was upstairs. When my parents arrived hours later, and I was no longer there... the police suspected that I was involved in the murders directly. That Peter and I may have been working together, or perhaps it had been my plot all along. Perhaps I had... killed Peter, to cover for myself.”
Jess glances briefly at Billy, folding her hands in her lap. Clearly she's pained by the memory, but she shows no sign of hostility toward her captor. He looks away guiltily, not wanting to meet her gaze, but she quickly returns her attention to you.
“After I escaped, I certainly couldn't go to the police about him. I was still in distress, and now that I knew where the others were, I was concerned that giving them that information would only cause them to suspect me further. If we had returned and Billy had gone, I didn't know how I could prove his guilt and my innocence. Especially... after.” Looking askance, she subtly rubs her stomach with the heel of her palm.
“...My only choice was to go off on my own. I had been attending University on the south end of Ontario, very close to the States. At the time, documentation wasn't needed to travel between the countries, so I ran away to upstate New York and began a new life. I don’t believe I met Billy again until that awful storm in the late 70′s, and even then... I didn’t know.” She looks to the mentioned man. “But that could very well be its own story.”
“W... we k... kept on fi-f… finding each oth-ther,” Lenz sits awkwardly with his gaze down, stuttering through his words and picking at the fibers of his sweater. It's clear he has some darkness to his path as well, but he's not as eager to talk about it at the moment. In fact, it seems like his only comfort right now is following Jess like some kind of lost pup.
“Yes... Oh, and, as for that last bit,” Jess’ cheeks flush. Tucking her hair behind her ear, she sheepishly looks between the two of you with a flustered smile. “You're very kind. In terms of relationships, things are a bit... complicated. And, as it happens, I'm not overly fond of using telephones as a means of communication anymore~ But at the very least, I do enjoy discussing things with you here, and am happy to continue doing so,” She nods, reaching out and taking your hands in her own. Jess gives them a loving squeeze. “And thank you very much for wanting to speak with me to begin with.”
“...mph.” The reaction you get out of her seems to unease Billy further. But, for now… he bites his tongue and copies her nodding.
#Black Christmas#Jess Bradford#Billy Lenz#Billy ask#slasher ask#Sorry this took forever Mod Jess rewrote it a million times#Thank you so much for this ask!!

Joanna/Tywin
Tywin’s quarters at the highest room of the Hand Tower were spartan, a lot more plain and functional then she would have imagined. There was a fire burning merrily in a grate, a window through which he could overlook the city when he wished, and the room’s sole inhabitant, a fully grown Pigeott, a dark golden brown with the dusting of lighter colour that marked a fully mature bird, comfortable on it’s specially reinforced perch by the window.
“Maybe a little too fully mature, eh?” She said to the bird, which turned its hooded head to the sound of her voice, opened his beak, and called “Eeeoott!” in a voice loud enough to command armies. It took a lot of interaction before you got a sense for Pokemon, and the bird was unfamiliar, but she got the sense that it was a question.
The bird’s jesses were entirely without ornament where Joanna -who had been brought up with rich and valuable birds, would have expected to see embroidery and gold leaf at the very least, certainly not plain leather. This was a bird worth -
- worth the whole value of the contents of her jewellery box, which was worth quite a bit.
The Pigeott was the size of her entire upper body, larger than any bird her father – she sneered internally at the thought of the man – had ever owned. “Eeeoott!” the bird screamed arrestingly. “Pidgeeeoott!”
Joanna crossed her arms. Not for any emotional reason, just to get them out of the way before she did something reckless and impulsive. Only a fool got close to someone else’s bird – especially when that bird was big enough to eat the fool – but her fingers itched to handle it, to feel its weight on her fist. Could she even fly such a bird? She didn’t know - but she wanted to try.
To distract herself, she made her way over to the window, looking down on the city below. A fleeting morning rainstorm had freshened the air a little, but already the scent of refuse, burnt fat and rotting fish once again had become noisome.
She found herself looking at the bird again, and was on the cusp of doing something foolish, when the door opened, and he stepped in. He’d already divested himself of his cloak and gloves, but he’d been riding with the king
A modest woman looked down in this world - even the queen was weak. She is expected to keep her eyes on her slippers; to speak only when spoken to. And a supplicant could afford less pride then a woman, a supplicant bows low and stretches out a pleading hand. But that, she knew, would gain little ground with this man.
He is blond haired, green-eyed, with a tanned face, stern as a judge and as bleak and pitiless as the slopes of the seven hells, yet not without a certain charm in spite of the sternness. Bards and minstrels praised the young king and his looks, though in truth he had a narrow face and a rather weak chin (likely why he was trying to grow a beard), but Tywin looked twice the king he did. This man was ascendant. His men were in every great house in the land now, and every profitable business or place or tax is was his gift, to give or take away as he saw fit. Yet this has not made him any softer. The opposite, if anything.
Only months ago, some lesser noble from the outer reaches of the Westerlands had taken it upon himself to travel to the King’s Court to petition Tywin Lannister for a loan, to give him some chance of making back what he already owed. The Lord Paramount had shaken his head dismissively and told him to get on his knees and beg. When the noble did as he was told Tywin Lannister had shaken his head again, and suggested that he might as well kiss the dirt at his feet for all the respect he had for a man who would beg at the feet of another. Instead of aid, Tywin had disenfranchised the noble, allowing him to leave King’s Landing with the shirt on his back and nothing more, no shoes, no trousers, no cloak to guard against the elements, and promised to find someone he could give the man’s estate to, so that he could rule in his stead. “A man should be able to care for his own, not prostrate himself at the feet of strangers and beg for mercy. It is a lesson you would all do well to learn.” And the king had laughed, and agreed that they could all learn a thing from his friend. That had been his judgement and the ramifications of it were still playing out to this day. Joana had learned from that mistake, and had no intention of repeating it. She stood tall, sinking down into a curtsey but gazing up at him, meeting his eyes.
“I need your help,” she begins. She hesitates, then decides to be entirely candid. “You know my situation?”
“My condolences for the death of your father.” He replied.
“I cannot obtain my dowry lands nor my jointure, now I am orphaned.” She stumbles a little in the face of his cold interest. “I have nothing to live on.”
Tywin simply stared coolly at her. “Once you marry…”
“I don’t have any intention of doing that right now.”
He raises an eyebrow. His gaze was demeaning, making her feel like an ignorant peasant. A big cat pads through the doorway behind him, rolling a lazy eye over to her, the cat’s intelligent green eyes meeting Joana’s for a moment. It tilted it’s head quizzically, glanced at Tywin, then moved over to the rug before the fire, stretched, and lay down, resting it’s head on it’s paws.
“Take a seat.” He said, indicating the chairs by the fire with a wave of his arm. His tone made it clear that this was an instruction, not a courtesy.
She sat. The big cat, deciding she was interested after all it got to it’s feet gracefully and padded slowly over to her, sniffed her foot and her hand, then hopped into her lap and rubbed her head into Joana’s arm to mark this new acquaintance with her scent.
While she was distracted, Tywin crossed the room and sat down beside his desk, pouring himself.a goblet of something in the decanter, and taking a thoughtful swallow.
Pyroars were common enough in the Westerlands. Plenty of smallfolk had them as well as nobles, dangerous as they were they were good for a lot more than just fighting, and they were clever and followed instructions. Of course, they weren’t hard workers like arcanines (which could do the work of thirty men), but they ate a lot less and they didn’t get territorial, at least to the extent that the big dogs did. Actually they worked together pretty well.
But she’d never seen one like this before. It seemed to shimmer, even to glow, the light from the open window reflecting off it’s lustrous coat like the facets of a gemstone. It was a beautiful animal, sleek and strong, without blemishes or scars despite clearly having fought plenty of times before.
She stroked the pyroar’s beautiful silky fur while she waited for him to continue, just behind the ears the way her Persian Sekhmet liked, and it closed it’s eyes and pushed against her hand insistently. She didn’t know if Pyroars purred, the way Persians did - anyway, that was an intimate thing that they usually only did with their trainers. But she growled. A soft, low Rrr-Rrr-Rrr-Rrr, like a small engine trying to turn over.
“She likes you. Well, she’s an excellent judge of character, so I consider that the highest possible recommendation.” Tywin said. There was no change about him, he looked as hard and unsmiling as ever, yet she sensed a general feeling of amusement about him nonetheless - or at least, she felt like she did.
“Does she have a name?”
“No.” Tywin replied, his teeth flashing for a moment. “I treat my Pokemon with practicality. It is an arrangement from which we both benefit, nothing more. They are useful, but that is the extent of our relationship, and it is overly romantic to name them, just as it is is pretentious to name horses unless you are keeping a breeding book. Excessive, one might even say.”
Joana didn’t like the look he gave her, or his eloquent curl of the lips that could almost be mistaken for a smile, or the slightly self-satisfied, smug tone in his voice when he asked or answered questions. “However, she is every bit the judge of character I said she was, and has a real knack for sniffing out liars. Which is why she is here - to keep things honest. She can’t abide falsehood, and if you try to deceive me, she’ll know. And she’ll stop being friendly.”
Suddenly Joana felt a lot less comfortable.
"Now, you have nothing to live on except the charity of your friends. I imagine you are here to renegotiate the terms of your loan?"
“Yes. In light of my circumstances, I request that it be extended for another year.” She said, a little distracted. She was a lot less comfortable than she had thought, somehow he’d manoeuvred her entirely on the back foot, and to make matters more uncomfortable the unnamed Pyroar had found a small scar on her forearm that, to it’s sensibility, must have seemed like matted fur, and now she was patiently trying to groom it by licking the small area repeatedly with her rough tongue. And it tickled. “For the love my father bore you.”
She slowly rotated her arm so the Pokemon would lick a different spot, but it was wise to her. It had mothered many cubs more stubborn than Joanna and she knew that trick. She took the arm gently between her teeth, turned it back where it had been, and continued licking the offending scar.
"Your father borrowed a little over a thousand dragons from my father." Tywin said. "And at very generous terms, I might add."
“My father was your loyal subject to the end. He provided men when you asked, he fought by your side against Maelys the Monstrous, and he borrowed only to make necessary changes to his lands.” That was laying it on a bit thick, perhaps, but her position was weak enough without letting him poke holes in it with impunity.
“Yes, I can see the necessary purchases.” He said, getting to his feet again, and crossing the room, until he was close.
“Tourmalines.” Tywin leant down, so there faces were only two feet apart, his fingers gently touched her earring, and her ear as well. “Pretty, but only tourmalines. I think I’ll give you emeralds to wear. A collar of them, which flash like your eyes in the light.”
“Oh?” She looked him over boldly. “Well, if it’s all the same to you, I think I shall have the emeralds in advance. Because doubtless your Pokemon aren’t the only things you view in terms… how did you put it? Practicality, Lord Lannister? Doubtless after an exciting night you would think it overly romantic to remember my name. Woman, I think, would be enough for you, anything else, would be excessive.”
To her astonishment, Tywin actually smiled. For a moment, he looked amused, then his face was the same as ever. Still, there was no mistaking it. His renowned composure had shown a crack. “Have dinner with me tonight.” He suggested. “And we’ll renegotiate the terms of the loan to something as favourable as you want.”
She paused. For a moment, her mind fluttered back to a similar proposal the King had made, one day after he’d been fighting with his sister. Then she took a deep breath, and looked him in his green eyes, flecked with traces of gold. “I trust that your intentions are honourable, however I’m mindful of my reputation, and I’m sure you are as well. So you have no issue with me bringing a chaperone?”
“Of course not.” Tywin replied.

round up // FEBRUARY + MARCH 23

February and March are strange months for a film enthusiast. One part of you is excited to start seeing new, star-studded studio movies on the big screen: 80 for Brady! Ant-Man and the Wasp! Cocaine Bear! Creed! But it’s also when the previous year’s films are wrapping their season with the final hurrah of a new, star-studded Oscars. In the case of Everything Everywhere All at Once, it means we spent a full year discussing and dissecting this year’s Best Picture winner! Much of this Round Up is dedicated to 2023 releases, though as always, you can find throwbacks to ‘30s, ’80s, and ‘00s flicks I missed till now, plus a few other media forms such as stage and page (as always, in a rough order of when I experienced them). But before we start building 2023’s Best Of lists, make sure you don’t miss these highlights from this year’s Oscars, which was a mostly refreshing return to (non-slappy) form:
Hugh Grant on the Red Champagne Carpet - Sometimes people refuse to play the game, and the result is glorious (Kudos to Ashley Graham for keeping her composure!)
Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue - While he’s not afraid to take some shots, he actually seems to be rooting for the movies and the Oscars to succeed, which is not something I can say for the last year’s trio of hosts
Ke Huy Quan wins Best Supporting Actor - Perhaps the best speech of the night
Jamie Lee Curtis wins Best Supporting Actress - If not him, then it’s this one
Navalny wins Best Documentary - If you want to get political in your acceptance, please refer to this well-executed speech
Jenny the Donkey from The Banshees of Inisherin!
A performance of “Naatu Naatu” from RRR - If you want to perform at the Oscars, please refer to this well-executed one from the RRR crew
Lady Gaga performs “Hold My Hand” - The gal never misses in finding new ways to innovate on her performances
Michelle Yeoh wins for Best Actress - Best Actress and best-dressed of the night
Now on to the Best of 2023 so far!
February + March Crowd-Pleasers

1. Cookies: The New Classics by Jesse Szewczyk (2021)
A co-worker gifted me this for Christmas, and not one recipe has been a dud yet. The book categorizes 100 creative cookie and cookie-adjacent recipes into Boozy, Chocolatey, Fruity, Nutty, Savory, Smoky, Spiced, and Tart chapters so you can find just what you want for each season. Many of them are not-too-difficult, and the photography is both beautiful and actually similar to what comes out of my oven. My favorite recipes so far include Berry Blast Marbled Sugar Cookies, Chewy Triple-Spiced Sugar Cookies, Chipotle Fudge Squares with Crunchy Raw Sugar, Chocolate Chunk Oatmeal Cookie Bars, Lavender Chocolate Chunk Cookies, and Salt-and-Vinegar Potato Chip Cookies.

2. 80 for Brady (2023)
Together the 5 leads have won 5 Oscars, 12 Emmys, 2 Grammys, 3 Tonys, and 7 Super Bowl rings, so even though the script is a corny underdog story about people who have not been underdogs in ages, 80 for Brady a feel-good winner. Read my full review for ZekeFilm.

3. Double Feature - ‘80s Comedies: Fletch (1985) + Troop Beverly Hills (1989)
In Fletch (Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 8/10), Chevy Chase works as an undercover reporter who gets caught up in a conspiracy so complex and silly I couldn’t do it justice here. In Troop Beverly Hills (8.5/10 // 7/10), Shelley Long works as a troop leader for a knockoff Girl Scout Troop who gets up in cookie selling schemes so creative and silly I couldn’t do it justice here either. More fun from the best decade for Hollywood comedies!

4. Enough (2002)
A subgenre I’ve yet to tire of: thrillers about abused women getting the last word. (See also: Double Jeopardy with Ashley Judd and Sleeping With the Enemy with Julia Roberts.) Perhaps it was because my entire thought process in watching this was, “It’s on Netflix, why not?” but J. Lo’s take on the subgenre brought enough clever twists and empowering moments to become a surprising success. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 7/10

5. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
The third Ant-Man reminds us Paul Rudd is one of the funniest actors alive and it’s kicking off Phase 5 of the MCU with the momentum missing from Phase 4. Read the triple-shot review I wrote with two other critics at ZekeFilm. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 7/10

6. Cocaine Bear (2023)
Cocaine Bear lives up to what you’d expect from its title, and like some of the most fun hits of the ‘80s and ‘90s, it’s all-in on the silly, one-note premise with no desire for sequels, spin-offs, or universes. Read my full review for ZekeFilm. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6.5/10

7. M3GAN (2023)
I consider horror about creepy dolls off-limits, but M3GAN is hardly horror, and its doll is so over-the-top she’s hilarious. There’s a little bit of thoughtful commentary about our dependence on technology, but mostly it’s an excuse for pure entertainment. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7/10

8. John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
I’ve always been cool on John Wick. In fact, I turned off the first one in the middle when I first tried it almost a decade ago because its violence felt gratuitous. But fourth time’s a charm? Maybe it’s because of its visual flair or perhaps it’s because it feels like director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves were going for broke, but this nearly-three hour epic won me over. The movie it most reminded me of? Singin’ in the Rain of all things. The fight choreography is as inventive and athletic as “Moses Supposes,” turning the action thriller into an art form. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10

9. Your Place or Mine (2023)
Corny? Formulaic? Yes and yes. But Aline Brosh McKenna’s directorial debut delivers charm in spades, meaning it more than exceeds the Netflix rom-com average threshold (a low bar to be sure). Contrary to the buzz, Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon make believable BFFs and a couple to root for. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 6.5/10

10. The Golden Girls (1985-92)
Every day I get closer to my true, spiritual age of 83, and after the silliness of 80 for Brady, I decided it was time to binge the silly-but-slightly-more-caustic The Golden Girls. Blanche, Dorothy, Rose, and Sophia’s jokes and adventures in their Miami bungalow remind me of my days rooming with my college besties, and it gives me hope that one day I’ll get to experience something as joyful, messy, intimate, and, yes, silly as their friendship all over again.
February + March Critic Picks
1. HRH: So Many Thoughts on Royal Style by Elizabeth Holmes (2020)
In September, I shared my appreciation for Elizabeth Holmes’s fashion and culture commentary in the wake of another Elizabeth’s passing. I received her coffee table-worthy book for Christmas, and her insight into how the Queen, Princess Diana, and at-time-of-publication Duchesses Kate and Meghan use their wardrobes to speak for causes and for themselves doesn’t disappoint. They have all become style icons not just because of their titles but because of their sartorial choices, and Holmes helps pinpoint why and how alongside a robust and beautiful collection of photography.

2. Triple Feature - Classic Screwball Rom-Coms: Libeled Lady (1936) + The Mad Miss Manton (1938) + The Palm Beach Story (1942)
In Libeled Lady (Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10), Jean Harlow, Myrna Loy, William Powell, and Spencer Tracy get mixed up in a love quadrangle when a socialite threatens to sue the paper for libel. In The Mad Miss Manton (8/10 // 8.5/10), Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda team up (against their wills) in proto-Legally Blonde style to solve a murder. And in The Palm Beach Story (8/10 // 8.5/10), Claudette Colbert and Joel McCrea plan to divorce so they can marry wealthier people. Don’t worry—in spite of all the mixups and shenanigans, everybody ends up with just the right person in all three of these comedies.

3. Creed III (2023)
In the middle, I found myself thinking, “This is what Hollywood entertainment for adults should be!” Yes, there’s a place for 80 for Brady, Ant-Man, and Cocaine Bear, but Creed builds its stakes on character instead of gimmicks or elevator pitches. Read the full review I tag teamed with fellow ZekeFilm writer Erik Yates. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 9/10

4. To Kill a Mockingbird National Tour
Perhaps the highest praise possible for this show came from my TKAM-devotee mother: She has some nitpicks about the changes Aaron Sorkin made on Harper Lee’s novel, but she liked this better than her Broadway viewing. Since I am closer to a devotee of Sorkin than Lee, I found most of the updates thoughtful and fresh for a text that saturates our culture.

5. The Parallax View (1974)
A political thriller in the frame of a journalist uncovering a conspiracy? Hmm…Alan J. Pakula really has my number. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10

6. Boston Strangler (2023)
Speaking of journalism thrillers, I’m not into true crime, but Queen Keira makes me to step outside my comfort zone. In her most exciting part in years, Knightley plays a reporter investigating a series of homicides at a third-rate Boston newspaper. She and Carrie Coon team up against workplace sexism and the strangler himself to get the truth out. It’s a real homage to Zodiac, but a solid one at that. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8/10

7. A Good Person (2023)
If Garden State was Gen X coping with the reality that the American Dream couldn’t protect them from the pain their parents avoided in a pre-9/11 world, A Good Person is Millennials and Gen Z realizing the American Dream has betrayed them. Read my full review for ZekeFilm. Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10

8. Captain Blood (1935)
I had no idea when I fired up this Errol Flynn/Olivia de Havilland adventure it’s basically a prototype for Pirates of the Caribbean—what a treat! How do the action, sets, and special effects look better than most adventure films today? Crowd: 7.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10

9. Australia (2008)
And now I have watched all of Baz Luhrmann’s lush, extravagant, colorful canon. In prep for the Faraway Downs miniseries he is making with never-before-seen footage from this shoot, I finally checked out the Hugh Jackman/Nicole Kidman World War II epic. As usual for Baz, it’s a little shaggy, but it’s also part of what I love about him. Every movie feels like a realized vision of texture and emotion, and Australia is no exception. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 8.5/10

10. John Mayer Solo
Come for the heartbreaking tunes and stay for Mayer’s delightfully awkward banter between songs. At our show he performed a retrospective of his career on guitar on piano and debuted a new song. While I enjoy a razzle-dazzle show, he’s proof you don’t need to rely on gimmicks in an arena.
Also in February + March…
In preparation for the Oscars, I reviewed Best Picture nominee Triangle of Sadness (which I had previously recommended in my last Round Up, which is why it’s not listed above). Like Best Picture winner Parasite, part of the fun of Triangle of Sadness is its surprises, but if you want to get a preview, you can read my review for ZekeFilm.
Kyla and I also checked out the 1977 Best Picture nom The Turning Point, a ballet melodrama starring Anne Bancroft, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Shirley MacLaine in ep. 136. And in ep. 135, we watched classic TV medical shows Marcus Welby, M.D. and ER.

Jess Watches Final Results - Day 213 [x]
RRR wins with 6 of 8 votes!
The power of male friendship! As an English person who isn't patriotic, it was refreshing to see British colonizers depicted as the entitled evil entity they were/are. And the queer-coding of the two leads was delightfully unexpected. Epic choreography and cinematography throughout. A film worthy of the 3hr length.
(I thought the audio sync was weirdly out in the Hindi dub because I didn't learn until after that it was originally in Telugu, and Netflix didn't offer it as an option??)

Thursday, Feb 7
And it worked!
Cloudy cold daylight woke me at like 6:47 even tho I went to bed at like 1
managed to get myself up and into leggings and my leon tee and to Studio A at Marino by 8am
It was really nice. I was perfectly capable of it. It didn’t kick my ass as hard as I thought it would and sure I need more than that if I wanna sculpt my body... but a start is a start. And i’m so proud of myself for going honestly and I’m gonna definitely try to do that every thursday because it was the perfect timing and it really just allowed me to wake up and sweat and focus on myself and breathe for a second. Plus! Not a wasted morning!
Home to shower and get ready. Ate my protein oatmeal. Raining today. Went to intro with vaguely wet hair - we discussed marat-sade. so interesting (It was RSC by the way)
Then women’s - Dan taught the class today. I totally just organized my desktop and like looked at things to do for our cousins daytrip but Dan was literally a better teacher sorry Margot. AND THEN DISCUSSION LED BY STUDENTS. SO. BASICALLY. TODAY WAS ABOUT BIRTH CONTROL. AND I REALIZED I AM
P A S S I O N A T E. About birth control.
- the fact that such undue burden of preventing pregnancy falls to women --> lack of male birth control, etc.
- THE EXPECTATION THAT WOMEN ARE ON IT. THE SHAME THAT WOMEN ENCOUNTER FROM DOCTORS ETC. IE MY DOCTOR.
- SLUT SHAMING WOMEN FOR USING PLAN B. One girl said she went to buy it and the guy at CVS said “You know condoms are a lot cheaper.” You have no. fucking idea why she needs this, for one thing so you had better fucking Pray that this girl hasnt had a traumatic experience, but this is stressful and embarrassing enough without that comment. And uh. I’m sorry did your sexual partner pay for your birth control? So why the fuck are you responsible for condoms? This girl said her mom said her problem with plan b is that it erases all consequences of sex. you don’t even have to think about the consequences. And I said no Im sorry. I don’t know why sex has to have consequences. I think that culturally we have moved past sex having consequences seeing as we do have birth control and condoms and all of these preventative measures. The idea is certainly not that sex Should have consequences. But shit happens. Condom breaks. He doesn’t pull out in time. You miss a pill one day and you get worried. Shit happens. There should be no shame in being careful.
At some point I said sorry What the FUCK. And the whole class laughed even Dan who lowkey put his face in his hands sorry Dan hahaha I was LIVID. At the end of the class the girl sitting next to me said “I love you.” and during the class this other girl said “I’m sorry I don’t even know you’re name but YEAH.” hahahahahahahaHA.
Then shop. Changed into gross clothes which I’ll now be leaving there.
Was so tired. Nothing real to do, too many cooks, ugh ugh ugh, so sucky today. The set is ugly idk why it looks like that. Belly REALLY hurt. Then home. Walked thru Richards to smell the dunks which hurt. I still haven’t ordered it.
Ate yogurt when I got home then some fruit which helped
I think I’m still dehydrated but i am Drinking water!
okay Mia soon we will see how it goes. rrr
PS We’re roadtripping for one day to Brattleboro VT me al Jess Jacob on March 2 and I wanna see a shitty basement folk show.
the sundance film festival starts today. Daniel auditions sasturday. He was supposed to come down friday night. Everything about that hurts. A date I never asked him on.
