Cacoph stood outside of Florah’s hive and knocked on the door. He’d received a text from him about an hour ago asking him to take care of Snelly since he and Karima were going traveling. It seemed like a simple enough favor. How high maintenance could a snail be? Plus, he was fairly sure tri-batdad wouldn’t try to eat it. He just wished Florah didn’t live so far away.

When there was no response, he knocked a few more times and waited. Nothing. With a bit of hesitation, he grabbed the doorknob and turned it. To his surprise, it wasn’t locked. He pushed the door open a little and peeked inside the hive. It didn’t look or sound like anyone was there. He wondered if perhaps they already left. It seemed odd to ask him over, then leave before he arrived.

He meekly stepped inside and closed the door behind him, then took out his huskphone to check his text messages to see if there’s something he missed.

ND: Hey Cac✿ph, can y✿u d✿ me a huge fav✿r?

ND: Karima and I are g✿ing away f✿r a while, and I need s✿me✿ne t✿ take care ✿f Snelly f✿r me while we’re g✿ne.

TF: Heck yeah, dude! (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:･ﾟ✧ It would be my pleasure!

TF: When do you need me to swing by and get her? (◠‿◠✿)

ND: As s✿✿n as p✿ssible? We’re actually leaving t✿night. I’m s✿rry it’s such sh✿rt n✿tice.

TF: Oh! (⊙△⊙✿)

TF: Sure thing! (´｡• ᵕ •｡`) I’ll be there before you know it! 

ND: Thanks, man. You’re a really great friend.

Cacoph sighed and walked further into the hive. Had he known they would already be gone by the time he got there, he would have asked where Snelly is. It felt weird enough just being in his friend’s hive by himself, but having to look into every room until he found her just didn’t sit right with him. He stepped back outside and sent Florah a text asking where to find the snail, but after fifteen minutes without a response, he went back inside. It looked like he was on his own.

After failing to find Snelly anywhere on the first floor, he made his way up the stairs to check the rooms on the second floor. The first door he tried led to the ablution chamber. Definitely not where Florah would keep a pet snail. Behind the second door was the linen closet. The third door was locked, so he assumed it was either Florah or Karima’s respiteblock.

He opened to fourth door, and he immediately wished he hadn’t. He stared in shock, then horror, as he processed what he was looking it. His legs gave out from under him and he fell to his knees, diluted yellow tears freely flowing from his eyes. His reason for coming over was violently catapulted to the back of his mind and all but forgotten for the time being.

Florah’s lifeless body hung from the ceiling in the middle of the room.

Cacoph stared at the troll that he called his friend, his emotions a furious cyclone of sadness, shock, and confusion. What drove him to this? Where was Karima? Why-- !? Why did this happen!?

He shakily pulled himself onto his feet and closed the door.  ... What should he do now? Was there anyone he could call? Florah never talked about having other friends. He could probably look through the contacts in Florah’s huskphone, but that would mean going into his room, and he... He couldn’t. He couldn’t bring himself to go in there. He didn’t even want to look at the door now that he knew what was on the other side.

Fifteen minutes passed before Cacoph could force himself to move from his spot in front of Florah’s room. Florah’s last request was the he take care of his pet snail. He didn’t know what he could do about the situation he found himself in, but he could at least do that. He found Snelly in her enclosure inside a dark room with a bunch of unfamiliar plants. He picked up her tank, then promptly made his exit from the hive.

He had many awful, terrible nights in his life, but this night was the worst.

>> ... The sound of knocking at the front door snaps you out of your thoughts. You glance at your huskphone, which you tossed onto the floor after you finished texting Cacoph. That was only a couple of minutes ago. There’s no way he’s already here. So who could be--

>> With a sigh, you remove the noose from your neck and climb down from the dresser.

>> You should probably get that.

Cacoph excitedly bounced on his heels as he waited for Florah or Karima to answer the door. As luck would have it, he was already on his way toward Florah’s hive when he got his texts. He wanted to surprise him with an album from a jazz band he’d gotten into recently. He remembered that Florah was looking for new tunes, and he was positive this would be a hit.

When the door finally opened after what felt like forever, he enthusiastically began signing a greeting to him. However, his enthusiasm immediately dropped when he saw Florah’s appearance: deep umber eyes, streaks of dried tears on his face, and a completely miserable expression.

‘Oh my god! You look terrible! Are you okay?? Did something happen?! What’s wrong!?’ Cacoph frantically signed. Florah winced at his friend’s outburst.

“I... I’m fine. Just having a bad mental health night. You know how I am,” Florah answered. Cacoph didn’t look any less concerned.

‘Have you already talked to Karima?’ he asked. As soon as he signed her name. Florah could feel himself getting choked up as tears stung the corners of his eyes. He turned around to furiously wipe them away before his friend saw, but it was a wasted effort. Cacoph placed a hand on his shoulder, and that was all it took for him to completely break down. He collapsed to his knees as loud, agonized sobs tore their way out of him. Cacoph kneeled down to him and, unsure of what else to do, opened his arms to offer a hug. Florah was quick to accept the offer and all but threw himself into his arms and desperately clung to him as he bawled.

It took twenty minutes for Florah to cry himself out, and it was another ten minutes before he was ready to let go. Cacoph pulled a handkerchief from one of his sleeves and offered it to him to dry his eyes and wipe his face.

‘Do you want to talk about it?’ he asked.

“Karima’s dead, Cacoph.”

‘Holy shit. I’m so sorry.’

“... I don’t want to be alive anymore.”

Cacoph’s eyes widened at his statement, and he struggled for something to say. After a minute of uncomfortable silence, Florah spoke again.

“She was everything to me. She saved my life. Without her, I never would have got my life back together. I don’t... I don’t think I have it in me to keep going without her.”

‘Is that why you asked me to take Snelly? Because you were going to kill yourself?’

Cacoph could only look at him with sadness and worry as Florah nodded in response. He wanted so desperately to comfort him, but he was at a complete loss. What do you say when your friend tells you he wants to die? The thought sent a chill down his spine. If he hadn’t happened to be in the area at the time Florah texted him... If he’d arrived a single minute, or even a few seconds later... He might have been too late to stop him.

He was lucky tonight, but what about tomorrow? It was only by coincidence that he reached him in time to stop him from doing something terrible, but if Florah truly didn’t want to be alive anymore, then what would stop him from trying again later? This whole situation was bad. What could be possibly say that would be enough to change his mind?

‘She wouldn’t want you to kill yourself. She would want you to stay alive,’ Cacoph reasoned. He hoped that would be enough to get through to him, but Florah’s empty expression didn’t budge. If anything, he now looked slightly more miserable.

‘Plus, if you die, then so will everything she loved. All her flowers and her houseplants and stuff will die if there’s no one to love them and take care of them like she did.’

That seemed to have made a dent, much to Cacoph’s relief. Maybe there was hope to convince him to keep going.

‘And someone needs to run her flower shop. You told me how proud of it she was, and how happy it made her. Isn’t that worth staying alive? To keep her dream going?’

“... I guess.” That was all Florah had to say in response. It wasn’t as much as Cacoph hoped for, but it was something to show he was getting through to him.

‘She may not be around anymore, but she’s still with you in the things you guys loved. As long as those things are here, then so is she.’

Florah remained silent, but his expression was a little softer now, so Cacoph considered that a win. For now, at least. He wasn’t sure what else to say on the subject, so he decided maybe changing it was a good idea. He reached into his sleeve and pulled out the jazz album.

‘I wanted to give this to you since you’re looking for new music to listen to. Want to go to my place and listen to it?’

Cacoph thought he saw the tiniest smile on Florah’s lips, but it disappeared as quickly as it came.

“Y-... Yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Let’s get outta here,” he said with a sigh and started to stand up. Cacoph stood up as well and gave Florah a tight hug before the two set off away from Karima’s hive.

>> No, NO! What’s Maeron doing here?? She’s going to ruin everything! You didn’t even lock the front door because Cacoph is coming to get Snelly! Dammit! You have to get this over with fast before she lets herself in to look for Karima. You hastily step off the dresser.

Maeron waited all of ten seconds before knocking again. “Karima, you know it’s rude to keep a goddess waiting~!”

She decided to pay her bestie a surprise visit and treat her to a night at her kismesis’s jazz club. When thirty more seconds passed without a response, she turned the doorknob to see if she was locked out. Upon finding it unlocked, she let herself in and looked around. It didn’t look or sound like anyone was hive, though she wasn’t going to leave without looking for her first.

“Damn, I knew I should have checked her flower shop first. She and Florah are probably there working,” Maeron muttered to herself as she searched. Having no luck on the first floor, she made her way up the stairs and went straight to Karima’s room.

“Karima, are you asleep in there?” Maeron asked as she knocked on the door. When she received no response, she groaned and looked over at the door to Florah’s room. She hated having to talk to him; he was such a passive-aggressive, smart-mouthed little shithead. She’d punch his head right off his shoulders if she could get away with it. With a sigh, she walked over to his door. If Karima wasn’t here, then he probably wasn’t either, but it was still worth it to check and make sure. She didn’t consider him worthy of enough courtesy to knock, so she grabbed the handle and opened the door.

“Flora-- Shit!!” she exclaimed as she saw him hanging from the ceiling, kicking and struggling as the noose around his neck strangled him. Immediately she ran into the room and, with one swift yank, ripped the rope from the ceiling and allowed his body to fall to the ground. As he coughed and wheezed for air, she grabbed him and frantically removed the noose.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing!!?” Maeron shouted at him forcefully pulled him onto his feet. Florah glared at her before turning away, refusing to look her in the face. With a snarl, Maeron grabbed him by the jaw with one hand and wrenched his head around to force him to look at her. “Well!?”

“The fuck do you think I was doing!?” he snapped back and tried to slap her hand away. However, her grip on his face was strong and she refused to release him.

“How goddamn stupid are you?? I thought you were past this shit! What if Karima found you pulling that stunt, huh!! Do you have any idea how much that would destroy he--”

“Karima’s fucking dead!” Florah yelled. Maeron’s anger seemed to vanish almost immediately, and her grip on him relaxed enough that he was able to push her hand away. He glared daggers at her as tears formed in his eyes and his body stiffened. Maeron struggled to process what she’d just been told. How could Karima be dead? They just talked two nights ago. She was tempted to accuse him of lying, but considering what she walked in on and how serious he looked, it had to be true.

After about a minute and a half of incredibly tense silence, Florah was the first one to speak.

“Yeah, that fucking sucks, right? I know,” he said with venom dripping from every word. “But hey, at least now you don’t have to have anything to do with me anymore, right? I mean, you only put up with me because of her. Now that she’s gone, you never have to see or talk to me again. So, yeah, you can go now. She’s not here anymore.”

Maeron could feel herself start to get choked up and her eyes start to water. She felt her chest literally ache with sadness and mourning, but she wiped her eyes and took a deep breath to force her feelings down before speaking.

“No.”

Florah stared at her in annoyance and disbelief. He was barely fighting back sobs, but just as Maeron forced herself to push her emotions aside, so did he.

“What do you-- !? Didn’t you hear me?? We’re done! You don’t have to be here anymore, so leave,” he ordered with his fists balled at his sides. Maeron stood her ground and glared down at him, her arms crossed in defiance.

“I’m not going anywhere. The second I step out that door, you’re going to try again, and I refuse to have that on my conscience,” she answered. Florah stared at her in deep frustration, the tears running down his cheeks now tears of anger.

“So what!? Why do you care what I do? You hate me! You should be happy! I won’t be your problem or anyone else’s anymore!” he fired back. Maeron’s expression remained unchanged.

“If you kill yourself, then all the time, love, and care that Karima gave you will be for nothing,” she said calmly in contrast to Florah’s outbursts, which seemed to only make him more upset.

A pistol appeared in his hand and he aimed it directly at her chest, his finger resting on the trigger and ready to pull. Maeron’s eyes widened before her expression turned dark and she growled at him. He growled back.

“I’m not fucking asking. Get out, or I’ll kill us both,” he threatened through gritted teeth and flowing tears. Rather than do as he ordered, Maeron took a step closer. He took a step back, his hand starting to tremble. “What are you doing!? I said leave or I’ll kill you!”

“No, you won’t.” She took a step closer, and he a step back. “You know how I know?”

She stepped closer.

“Because you’re not a killer.”

Another step closer.

“You may hate me, but you could never kill me. You couldn’t kill anyone.”

Another step closer.

“As much as you don’t want to, you care about other people, even the ones you don’t like. You saw and even caused so much death when Allmah controlled you, and you’re nothing like her. You’re better than that. You could never be a killer like she wa--”

“Just shut up!!” Florah screamed at her. She stopped advancing on him as his whole body now trembled. “Fine. Don’t leave. I don’t need your permission to end things.”

Without another word, Florah turned the gun on himself and pressed it to his temple. Before he could pull the trigger, a loud shout filled his ears, and he could feel his mind being overridden. It only lasted for a second, but that was enough time for Maeron to get close enough to grab the gun from his hand and throw it across the room. She didn’t want to resort to using her chucklevoodoo on him, but her hand was forced.

“I told you before. I refuse to have your death on my conscience,” she said as he slumped to the ground in defeat and sobbed. Maeron sighed in relief and displeasure as she waited for him to cry himself out. It was fifteen minutes before he was composed enough to speak again. He looked at her with desperation.

“Why are you trying so hard to stop me? Please, I’m begging you. Just leave me alone and let me do this,” he pleaded. Maeron’s expression softened and she knelt down in front of him.

“I’ll admit, part of it is just to spite you, but the main reason I stopped you is because it’s what Karima would want me to do. I won’t be able to stop you every time; I have my own life to live, and I won’t spend it holding your hand and wrigglersitting you every night. But this time I could, so I did. If you want to shit all over her and ignore what she would want, fine. But for the time being, I’m not going to disappoint her.”

Maeron stood up and pulled him onto his feet.

“Come on, we’re going to Dr. Noru’s office for an emergency session. I’m sure when he hears you tried to kill yourself twice, he’ll make room in his schedule for you,” she said as she grabbed his hand and started walking toward the door. He didn’t put up much of a fight until they got downstairs.

“I can’t. I told a friend to come over to take Snelly,” he said.

“So call them and say you changed your mind. I assume they have no idea what you were planning.”

“No. I still want to see him before I go, though. Please?”

“... Fine, but once he leaves you’re going to see your therapist.”

“Okay. ... I’m not going to thank you, you know.”

“I know you won’t. Just because you’re sad doesn’t mean you’re not an asshole.”

Oh nooooo, it’s the sex cult one, and I feel so bad about the gas station guy.  It’s one of the few times that Ruby actually gets a bit of screen time, which is grand because Ruby is the actual best, but she’s so sad.  

Kudos for the continuity of his truck still being a slammed up wreck.  I hope I notice when he gets it more or less fixed, just to see how long it took in the end.

I still have thoughts and feelings about Walt’s bear paw print buckle.  Why can’t he be the kind of friend that Henry deservessssssS?

Oh honey, Ruby.  Breakin’ my heart, here.  I have a sort of headcanon that in addition to just generally knowing everybody because she’s Ruby, that she would get to know the folx who run the places that would likely tend to end up calling in a bit more often (gas station owners, bartenders, DV advocates, shelter workers) a bit better.  But he was also her contemporary, so hell, they might have gone to high school together, or gone to the same dances as teens.  Basically I have lots of feelings about Ruby, and I dearly wish that she had had more screen time and character development.

Looool, Branch actually doing some decent police work.  

I am unreasonably fond of Ellis just because of the jackalope with the camera. 

GLASSES.  And these are Henry’s early glasses, excellent.  I am choosing not to ruminate on the fact that I have mentally ranked the glasses that he has throughout the series.  That mess of the cable is making me twitch, though.  I may not deal all that much with the sound equipment, but yeeeesh, that is not great for the cable.  He’s so pretty, though.

Again with the Ruby feels, with her working on the eulogy!  She’s so wonderful.

Early seasons Ferg falls into the trap of making the chubby guy clueless and ridiculous, but I mostly forgive the writers for that because he does get some character growth.  And he is practically a kid these early days.  He’s what, mid 20s or something?  ...whaaaaaat.  Whaaaaat??  I just googled, and the actor was 33 in S1.  Oof.  Well.  Then the character just had some, uh, room for personal growth.  >.>

Ooooooope, first introduction of Newett!  Supervisor simultaneously managing to be a tool, and to call out Walt and Vic on their little blackmail threat.  

Aaaaand then this is also why I forgive the writers about Ferg: he’s not a complete lump.  They give him his own quirks, but then those quirks do prove useful.  Nerd powers activate!  You go get your geology thang on, buddy.  BLESS HIM.  And then once Henry does realize that he’s onto something, he doesn’t belittle him, just rolls with the new information.

“The DMV again.  What, am I being punished for something?”  No Vic, it’s called being one of 3 deputies, so it’s your frickin’ job.  If you’re too high and lofty to do the job, why did you take it?  (I wanted to like her character, I swear I did.)

Tooooooooom Wopat.  Heh.  Wilkins is such an ass.  And it’s so very amusing to see him in that role, because, of course, the first role I saw him in was as Bo Duke in Dukes of Hazzard.  ...Bo would have grown up to be a better sheriff than Wilkins is, though, oil company shill that he is.  The mustache works for him, though.  Wilkins starts off as reasonable.  He’s up front about the campaign checks from Newett, and has a valid point about Walt stomping around wherever he damn well feels like it without so much as a radio call ahead.  “Didn’t have time,” my big toe.  Absaroka is supposed to be big, which means that it would take time to even get to the county line.  More than enough time for Vic to call in to the station on her phone, or for them to radio ahead.  He just doesn’t like not being able to do exactly what he wants exactly when he wants wherever the hell he wants, with no acknowledgement of other people’s boundaries or responsibilities.  (I’m more cheesed off on Mathias’ behalf than Wilkins here, but the point is largely the same.)

And then he promises that he’ll check in before any future visits, which is as much use as a fart.  All it does is clear the room, with no lasting impression.  UGH.

Early Branch still does want Walt’s approval.  He bucks the down-talking that Walt constantly gives him, and does think that he has better ideas a lot of the time...  ...but his reaction when Walt says that he thinks he’s right (given the circumstances) is a tiny bit heartbreaking.  With a dad like Barlow, it’s no wonder that he’d be absolutely aching for support and approval from a father figure and the few moments where Walt gives him any sort of nod clearly land deep.  

I adore Ferg and Henry’s extremely different reactions to the rando baby.  Henry is like >:( BABY DOES NOT BELONG HERE; WHO LEFT BABY HERE ANGY HENRY, but Ferg is just instantly a worried pile of sparkles and cotton fluff going Baaaaabyyyyy!

Cady!  Speaking of schmoopy people in the face of a baby, she’s adorable.  And competent.  I love her.  That’s a great top on her, too.  Shut up, I’m not just saying that because it’s yellow.

Ferg is such an optimist.  And I want to believe that he just carries that map around with him any time he’s on duty, not just for this case.  It seems like a very Ferg, just in case, thing to do.

[Aaaand sidetracked for a 45 minutes by the expanding Cobbler verse in the form of spinning more ideas about Ruby’s daughter and family.  I love them so much.]

Ok, I might have a little bit of a double standard.  Walt not playing by the rules annoys me, but Henry seeing the ‘No Trespassing’ sign and basically just shrugging and doing how he do is amusing to me.  Wow, Henry; you make it a whole 20 feet inside the fence before the rentacops roll up.  Womp womp.  Ew, and the racism.  Which he handles with grace and humor, but bleeegh.  And the unspoken, but so very clear, ‘bitch’ following his “How.”  Hearteyes forever.

I swear, Henry gets pulled into so much of Walt’s bs without even really asking that much.

OPE.  I have caught a booboo.  First of all, it’s kind of hilarious that Fiona Hines, aka “October” in the creepy sex cult has a DOB on her license of 04/15/1954.  She looks pretty good for a 58 year old.  But her address is listed as 6 Meadow Dr. RT 10, Durant Wyoming, aaaaand then Vic has her, “Guess where the address is--” and they cut to apparently Cumberland County, because there’s Sheriff Wilkins being all unhelpful.  I’m such a pedantic little asshole.  

The oncoming train is certainly an effective method of ratchetting up tension.  The teacup on the track is a neat visual, but makes no sense, because the vibrations of a train going by, much less one slamming on the breaks like that would have either knocked it off or shattered it.  ...I’m why we can’t have nice things, aren’t I.

And then Ruby coming through with tying off the emotional thread of the episode.  She’s a gem, and I wish we’d had more of her.

Top 5 Things I Liked About RWBY Volume 4

This is going out later than I was hoping, but hey better now that never. Anyways, I honestly think that V4 is a pretty underrated Volume. There’s a lot that I really enjoy about it and after the insanity of V3, I’m glad that we got a more lowkey season that let everyone begin to heal. I’m hoping that RvB18 will follow that path tbh, but that’s not important here. There’s a lot to like, so let’s talk about the Top 5 Things I Liked About RWBY Volume 4!

#5. The Switch to Maya/Improved Animation

For Volumes 1-3, animaiton was primarily done in a program called Poser. This was mainly because it was what Monty liked to use, especially for fight animation. Poer isn’t an animation program, it is a modeling program that Monty was able to work for what he needed, but again it is not a proper animation program. V3 looks amazing, but I think that it was clear that they had reached their limit on how much they could push it. Add that with now having a larger animation staff, and it was time for a change. As such, they shifted to Maya, a common animaiton program in the field, and I am going to say it… it was 100% the right choice.

The animaiton in the Poser Era wasn’t bad, but… there were plenty of times where it felt like expressions and casual movements were very stiff. V4 changed that massively. There is so much more facial expression, but not just that. Take Blake’s cat ears for example. They are SO expressive in every scene that she’s in. Sure it might be because she threw out the bow, but still! I really don’t think that they could have done that in Poser. Animaiton models improved, like Sun’s abs no longer being glued to him for example and his little necklace sometimes daggling about. Environments look more vibrant. Environments have improved. Things like shading look better. And while the fight scenes aren’t Monty-like anymore, they are still really good! Seriously, Qrow vs Tyrian is still awesome~

I know that the shift wasn’t something liked by everyone, though I think that the vast majority have come around since V4. The animaiton has only kept improving after this, and it’s crazy going back to V1 and seeing the difference. But they sold me the second that they released the Ruby Trailer in the lead-up to the volume. Maya has allowed for a lot of improvement and new opportunities, and I believe that RT made the right choice in transitioning over to it. V4 looked so good, especially with how many new locations that it introduced us to, and I freakin’ love it~

#4. Expansion On The World

Volume 4, above all, is a world-building volume. We spent all of our time in the first three volumes primarily in Beacon and the city fo Vale. The only locations that we got a substantial amount of time in otherwise were Mountain Glenn and the Amity Arena for the Vytal Festival. Otherwise, we’ve been stuck in one place despite knowing that there is a much larger world out there. Thankfully though, this volume takes us outside the Kingdom of Vale and finally allowed us to explore the rest of Remnant… well, parts of it. Still, more than the other volumes had.

This was an advantage of using the multiple plotlines.. We got a really good amount of new locations. RNJR was in Anima, which had a lot of Asian-inspired scenery and naming. Yeah, we mostly spend the time on trails and villages, but you can still see the difference between the villages and Vale. Which we got to see what it’s like outside of Vale. Some villages like Higanbana are nice, while others like Shion or Kuroyuri… well… it emphasizes just how bleak the world truly is. Vale was an overall safe place, and even that wasn’t safe. If you don’t live within a kingdom though? Hope that luck is on your side.

We also get to see Menagerie for the first time. Sadly we don’t get to see as much here or in V5, but we do get to see how cramped it is and it overall looks nice. You can see that, as Blake said, they tried to make it a welcoming place for Faunus. We get to see Weiss’ home, which is as empty and cold as you would have imagined it being. It looks grand, but it’s just… empty and quiet with Weiss, more or less, alone aside from Klein. Patch is nice, you can certainly see why Tai would raise his kids there and in contrast to Weiss’ home, it’s small but the peaceful and comforting environment that Yang needed. Salem’s realm is eerie. Oscar’s farm is… a farm. And Mistral? Amazing.

What I’m getting at here is that we learn so much more about the world. Even outside exploring new locations, we learn about the Relics and the God Brothers. We start to get an understanding of the war between Oz and Salem, though of course, we learn the true scale in V6. The volume does a lot to make Remnant feel more like an actual world full of stories, problems, and history. It took us out of the hub that we were used to with Volumes 1-3, and I think that they did so very well. Very much appreciate it~

#3. Yang Plotline

While Yang got the least amount of focus, I… don’t view that as a bad thing. A story can’t be dictated by screentime alone. You have to look at how well they executed what they needed to do in the amount of time that they had. For example, they didn’t do very well with Ruby in V5 with the time that they had, but we’ll save that for the V5 posts. For V4, as I said, Oscar didn’t get the proper development and they didn’t utilize the amount fo time that they had for him well. But Yang though? I thought that they did her very well here.

Yang’s plot is, of course, recovering after losing her arm and getting back into fighting condition so that she can go after Ruby. We see that she has PTSD, having flashbacks and nightmares and her emotional state is… not in the bright place that we’re used to. Chapter 4, the chapter mainly focused on her, shows how concerned she is about taking the first steps of recovery, though we do see her start to laugh and joke around again. With Tai’s encouragement and support, Yang ut son the new arm, trains again and Tai helps her see the disadvantages of her fighting style/Semblance reliance, and opens up to her about Raven. In the end, Yang’s ready to go after her sister. She’s not 100% healed, but she’s got her drive back and is ready to move ahead.

Now again, Yang gets the least amount of focus. She only gets one chapter dedicated to her, and otherwise, her’s appears the least out of the four RWBY girls. But they utilized that time very well. They don’t drag it out or rush through it. They set up Yang’s mental state, show us signs of her PTSD, have Tai give her the proper encouragement, and have her start to get back on her feet. I’m glad that they were just straightforward with it, there was no need to drag it out especially since V5 and 6 show that there are still things that she has to work through. The point for this volume though was to get Yang well enough mentally for her to get back out onto the field, and they did that very well. She was in a positive environment as well, and that probably helped her.

So yeah, when I look back at the Yang plot, I have no issues with it. I think that it was given the amount of attention that it needed. It wasn’t rushed, but it wasn’t dragged out either. Yang didn’t fully recover, but she got well enough to move forward. That was the ultimate goal for everyone’s plotline, and they achieved it here. But I’m gonna leave it at 3 since it is a bit of a bummer that she got limited screentime. But for what it’s worth, they used that time properly and I am happy with the final result.

#2. Weiss Plotline

Out of all the plots, Weiss’ is my favorite and imo, the best one done. This is because this is the conclusion to her three volumes worth of character development. As I said n the V3 Likes post, her plot had her decide to finally cut herself away from her father for good and move ahead with the life that she wanted. Sadly, due to the Fall, Jaques had the perfect excuse to got o Vale and force her to return to Atlas with him. So just as quickly a she was able to embrace her freedom and the choice to never turn back, fate dealt her a bad hand and she was her father’s prisoner once more. Which she literally becomes a prisoner after her outburst at the charity event and gets stripped of her title. It’s just… horrible to watch that scene. Really, any scene with her and Jaques is uncomfortable, especially when he slaps her.

This is when we truly get to see Jaques abuse first hand, and it is as horrible as the previous hints indicated. He’s condescending and passive-aggressive to Weiss. He treats her like she’s a child and an employee more than as a parent. Compare it to Tai or Ghira with Yang and Blake, where they are nothing but caring and supportive to their daughters. Ghira especially welcomed Blake back with open arms despite how she called them cowards in the past and was just glad that she found her way again and was safe. Jaques only cares about Weiss for his image and to use her when it suits his needs, whether Weiss is willing to do it or not. He makes her sing rather than ask her. He refuses to let her out fo his sight during the charity gala. He talks down to her. He tries to gaslight her into everything being her fault and like her outburst was wrong.

Weiss did NOTHING wrong. She, and maybe Ironwood, were the only ones at that charity who gave a damn about Vale. Seeing her in that environment, where people were snobby, argumentative, and only cared about their own petty problems makes you really, really appreciate how much she had grown. She had broken out of that mindset after V1 and when the Trophy Wife claims that Vale deserved what it got, she rightfully calls her and everyone else out on their bullshit and refuses to let Jaques shut her up. Yeah, it ends badly with Weiss losing her title and Whitley rubbing it in. Weiss had no one aside form Klein, who is an actual good person who showed Weiss kindness and care moreso than her own family ever did. When Weiss breaks down, ti just… hurts. But luckily, at her lowest point, Weiss decides that enough is enough. She gets back out Myrtenaster, perfects her Summoning Glyph, and decides to break free once and for all. Klein helps her escape, and she manages to get onto a plane heading for Mistral. Which leads to… more problems, but that’s for the next volume.

Weiss’ plotline was very well done. It gets you to see how far that she’s come since Volume 1. She wanted to break free and become better, and she did. Jaques tries to lock her away again, but he failed. Weiss had gotten a taste of freedom, and she was going to reclaim it. She was going to redeem her family name her way by being a Huntress and no one was going to stop her. As This Life is Mine stated, “I won’t be possessed/burdened by your royal test/I will not surrender, this life is mine.” Yes Weiss, it is indeed.

Weiss was great, but there is one character whose focus I appreciated not just because it was good, but because it saved that character in my eyes.

#1. Ren Becoming a Character

I haven’t talked much about Ren and Nora, and that was because up until now… there wasn’t much to talk about. While I liked them fine enough, in V1-3 they’re just… there. It felt like they existed just because Jaune and Pyrrha had to be part of a four-man team because they’re nothing more than supporting characters there. Nora at least was funny and bubbly so she was at least fun, but Ren? He was just… quiet and the straight-man to Nora’s antics. That was it. He didn’t feel like a character, he just felt like a necessity needed to fill in a spot. My biggest hope with V4 was, now with JNR traveling with RWBYt hey would do something, anything to flesh out Ren and Nora. At least for one of them.

Fortunately, I got my wish.

To be fair, RWBY Chibi had gotten me to warm up to Ren since they got a lot out of him in several of the skits. More than I thought that they could. But I also like Chibi!Neo FAR more than I like Canon!Neo, so that wasn’t saying much. But fortunately, Volume 4 came around! Ren was really great in this volume! He’s still the quiet one, though he gets more here than any other volume. Which is something to note real quick. Neath has done a fantastic job as Ren. I can’t imagine how it had to have felt since he was taking over Monty’s spot. His brother’s spot. But he has done a perfect job since Day One, and I can’t imagine anyone else int he role at this point. He especially shows his range in this volume, and for a guy who had never voice acted until he started doing Ren, he pulls it off perfectly. I love Neath.

Ren is from Anima, but outside Mistral, so he’s of course the most knowledgeable of the area. We get to see more of his tracking and fighting skills, which is as fun to see as it was in Volume 1 which was the last time he got to showcase his fighting style. We get to see him interact with not only Nora, which was really nice especially with Jaune. But most of all, we get to see how Ren’s past affected him. His reaction to the destruction fo Shion perfectly fits due to what happened to Kuroyuri. His refusal to go back there makes sense since… well, no one likes to revisit the source of their trauma. He tells us about Oniyuri, and through him we see just how difficult it is to live outside the Kingdoms. We saw that with what happened to Shion, but Ren is a character that we’ve known for years and we get to see and hear about it through him. Which makes it hit us harder because it affects a character that we’ve known for so long. And when we get to the flashback and see how happy Ren’s life was and how it all went to Hell in just one night? It breaks your heart. We also finally learn his Semblance, which fits him perfectly so that was also appreciated.

But most of all, we get to Kuroyuri, and it’s the first time that we see Ren lose it. He’s always been a very calm, very tranquil person but when the Nucklavee attacks, he is understandably terrified… and then just lose it. We’ve NEVER seen him get angry before, but seeing the monster that ruined his life, killed his family, and destroyed his home? Yeah, that’ll make anyone snap. But thankfully, Nora snaps him out of it and this is when we see just how strong their relationship is. When Ren lost everything, he found Nora who had absolutely no one, and befriended her. They fought together. They survived together. They went through everything together, both good and bad. So fo course Nora could see that Ren was losing it, and she was the only one who could pull him back and stop him before he lost himself I’d still like them to be more clear on if Renora is canon or not cause I still really don’t know. But at least we get to see that their dynamic isn’t just the ‘hyper girl, calm guy’ dynamic. There is a true bond there, and it’s just beautiful.

It ends with Ren suing his father’s knife, the only thing of his family that he still has, to kill the Nuclavee. For his parents. For all the lives stolen. And, of course, for himself. This was him confronting his trauma, and finally putting it to rest and moving forward. That’s the biggest theme of this volume honestly, taking what brought you down, and moving forward. Yang began to stand up again after her trauma. Blake decided to quit running and to rise up against the White Fang once and for all. Weiss broke free of her father despite him trying to pull her back. Ruby saw just how bad the world truly was along with the Fall of Beacon still haunting her, but took ti and strengthened her resolve to be a Huntress and make things better as much as possible. And Ren? He chose to go back to Kurroyuri to save his friends and destroyed the monster that made so many suffer but without giving in to his sorrow. 

The volume just made me love Ren and see him more as a character than I had before. He’s one of my absolute favorites no. I’m hoping that V7 is going to do the same with Nora since at this point, I feel that she’s the most under-developed of the main cast. But we’ll just have to wait and see. Regardless, V4 changed my opinion of Ren completely and his story was done very well. As such, it my favorite thing about RWBY Volume 4.

And another volume done! So… next we get to Volume 5. Ho boy, I haven’t revisited it since it ended and not for the reasons that you think. But we’ll talk more on those posts. For now, thanks for reading everyone~!

Levi Headcanons

- Levi can’t read Erwin like he can read the rest of the world. So he likes to spar with him to learn more about the things that words cannot convey. He adores how much younger and alive Erwin seems in combat. The post adrenaline talks are that much more interesting too.

- Levi teaches Erwin how to read body language the way he did in the underground. It helps Erwin get a feel for any room he walks into before the politics start.

- Levi knows what Erwin’s needs are more than Erwin himself.

- Levi spoils Erwin’s horse when no one is looking. A silent thank you for bringing him home alive after every expeditions. (Levi is THE horse whisperer, and bonds with his own the way Viggo Mortensen bonded with his throughout the shooting of the LOTR trilogy)

- Levi has never seen Erwin angry. He can’t decide whether it’s a blessing or something he’s craving to witness.

- He doesn’t know when it started, but somewhere in his daily routine he’s made room for a ritual of making Erwin laugh at least once a day. It’s instinctual now. He’s appalled with himself when he makes this epiphany, like why am I trying to make you smile, I’ve never given a damn about anyone like this?

- Erwin is the only man who’s beard Levi will never insult.

- One time Levi brushes his hand against Erwin’s and marvels at how soft they are despite the amount of training they undergo.

- When Erwin loses his arm, Levi doesn’t know how to deal because he doesn’t want to insult him by taking care of everything for him. But, Levi refuses to see him struggle. Erwin notices his hesitance one day and reminds Levi that nothing would change if he did take care of things for Erwin. Levi has been helping him with simple day to day things since the beginning.

- When Levi has nightmares, he usually goes to Erwin’s office to share hot cups of tea. He knows the man will be in his study working later than most. This changes when Erwin losses his arm. One night Levi cracks and finds Erwin in his bedroom instead. Levi curls up next to him in bed where his right arm would be and just lays there listening to Erwin breathing. They never get around to talking about that night.

- There isn’t a doubt in my mind that Levi helped Erwin bathe when he first lost his arm.

- Levi has to stop himself from getting closer to Erwin when he’s trying to convince him to stay behind by breaking his legs. He knows in that instant that if he takes another step forward he will shatter, so he turns and leaves.

- Post RTS, Levi will angrily trash Erwin’s office to oblivion only to gently pick up the pieces and put everything back together the way they were before as an excuse to spend time in that room. He continues this routine at least once a week. Cleaning this way makes him feel like it’s mending his problems- it fixes nothing.

- Levi has a new reoccurring nightmare. Erwin is always in it.

Erwin Headcanons

- Erwin sharpens his blades frequently at night when they’re on expeditions as it soothes Levi’s severe insomnia and puts him to sleep.

- Erwin starts seeing less of his father and more of Levi haunting his dreams at night as their bond grows stronger.

- Erwin once brewed a cup of coffee for Levi… It was also the last time.

- One of Erwin’s guilty pleasures in life is finding time in his day to go watch Levi train with the new recruits. Seeing him demonstrate 3DMG tactics in the sky raises goosebumps every time. Sometimes he can’t believe he’s human.- Erwin has sampled multiple different kinds of tea to Levi before they came to a decision on which ones to blackmail from the MP.

- Erwin’s been sneaking cookies out of the kitchen for months. One day Erwin’s caught his hand in the cookie jar and is far too embarrassed to tell anyone so he secretly just hides it under his desk while he works. It’s 2 in the morning when Levi comes in calmly after another one of his nightmares with two cups of tea in hand. He plops down on the sofa, and Erwin finally caves and breaks the thing on his desk shattering it into a million pieces to which Levi simply replies “I stashed them in a smaller jar this time, you monkey.” After an awkward pause they both burst out laughing.

- When he travels to the inner wall, Erwin makes a mental note to bring back some sweets for the both of them to enjoy with tea later.

- Erwin nearly loses Levi after an expedition one time and realises how devastated and vulnerable the entire corps would be without him. Later, in the safety of his own office he realises just how much he was projecting.

- Erwin likes to line up his shoes next to Levi’s while on expeditions just to remind himself of Levi’s incredible strength despite his size.

- It’s 2 in the morning and Levi’s head is resting peacefully on his desk as he finishes signing the last paper for the night. He doesn’t realise until he sits up that his fingers have somehow wound together with Levi’s like tangled limbs. He’s both terrified and unable to move away when the sudden realisation of where his heart stands hits him. They don’t ever talk about it.

- Erwin aches to hold Levi when he threatens to break his legs. It dawns on him how much they mean to each other, and how little forgiving their predicament is. How cruel that they were pitted to lose to each other from the start.

- Erwin realises he’s going to die without ever having told Levi what value he added to his life.

- Erwin’s spirit lingers in the human world post RTS. He watches over Levi and is disturbed to find his name being whimpered late at night under blankets. He aches to hold him.

- Erwin is finally laid to rest when Levi returns with his bones and buries him properly. It’s then that he meets with his father and fallen comrades.

Of Branwens and Bulls: a connection between Raven and Adam?

I think there's a good chance that Raven and Adam are connected. While this isn't an original idea - when Raven appeared for the first time, it was assumed by many that she was a part of the White Fang, given her mask - it's died down in the past couple of years as we've learned more about them. Still, there's quite a lot of evidence, and I think I can make a compelling case for some sort of connection between them based on that evidence. And after I've done that, I have my own theory on what exactly that connection is. (oh and I’ve actually sort of learned how to use rich text, so the rest is beneath the “keep reading” thingie)

The Evidence Towards a Connection:

The biggest thing is their designs. Let's be real: Raven's design is pretty much a gender-bent version of Adam's initial design. Their designs have in common:

#1 - Grimm masks:

Raven is the only non-White Fang member to wear a Grimm mask.  

We know for certain after the Adam short that he was the one to begin the trend of wearing them, which begs the question: Where'd he get the idea? Maybe from the one other person who uses a Grimm mask? 

While we don't know how long Raven has used her mask, we do know that (based on V4C4) Qrow is seemingly familiar with it (which could possibly imply its usage even before she became a Maiden) and that a question about why she has it and how long she's had it at RTX was potentially a spoiler question that Gray didn't think he could answer. This suggests that it could have some further importance to the story besides covering Raven's eyes, and I can't see any other reason than it being an indicator of her connection to Adam.

#2 - Japanese-esque clothing:

While the general style of their clothing isn't *that* similar (both are just Japanese-Inspired), it should be noted that in Adam's conceptual design seen here, he's wearing clothing very similar to some Naruto ninja (specifically a younger Kakashi), with a flak jacket and kunai. This original design could've possibly been to parallel Raven's samurai-inspired appearance. 

#3 - A primarily red and black color scheme:

It's worth noting that red and black do seem to be the Branwen colors. Yes, Ruby has a red and black color scheme, but she mimics Qrow, so she got it from him. Other than her, many Branwen tribe members dress in red and shades of white or black. Yes, they're also the Evil!WF colors, but the Adam short shows us that he was using them well before the Evil!WF was a thing.

#4 - Red katana-esque blades:

It's hard to overstate how insanely similar Adam's and Raven's weapons are.  The only other pair of weapons that comes close in terms of similarity to each other are Winter's and Weiss's, and Weiss based hers off of Winter's. 

They look incredibly similar to each other, and not only do their sheathes both serve a dual purpose (shotgun/dust blade chamber), but both sheathes have been shown to shoot the sword out from them. So they have swords that look near identical and sheathes that 1. shoot their sword out and 2. have one other purpose besides that. 

Even after Adam gets his new outfit, there’s some telling clues to his possible background. 

His new outfit has something just like this thing on his belt. 

Speaking of his belt (well, he has two but the one with the buckle), it's the exact same as Shay D. Mann's, and both he and Shay have the same red strap on their thighs. For the record, it's not like this would be the first time CRWBY re-used assets to show connection between characters: When the V5 trailer came out, I noted that Shay and one of the bandits with Raven had the same gloves and correctly used that information to predict that Shay was one of Raven’s bandits. There’s precedent for them paying attention to stuff like this. Besides that, this bandit that ambushed Yang has a thigh strap (though a different color than Adam's and Shay's), so does one of the bandits that is with Raven when she finds Weiss, and several of the misc. tribe members that we see in the bandit camp also have thigh straps. As far as I know, no other characters besides Adam and Branwen tribe members have a thigh strap like that.

But swords and clothing choices aren’t the only things they have in common.

Philosophy: Raven, as we know, is all about strength. She has a survival of the fittest mentality: "The weak die. The strong live. Those are the rules." So does Adam. While Raven's idea of strength is just pure power, Adam's seems to be Faunus in general: "We're better than humans. We have everything humans have and more. Humans shouldn't just fear the Faunus, they should serve the Faunus." Faunus are stronger and better, therefore they should be the ones on top.

Fighting style: They're the only characters in the show who have used Iaido. And both have been known to shoot their sword out of their sheathe as a start to their fights. Again, the only two characters who do so.

Finally, there’s a few more things that could indicate a connection:

A black bird appears at the beginning of the Black Trailer, and Adam even takes note of it and watches it as it flies away. We know Raven keeps tabs on those she has bonds with - we see her around Qrow several times throughout Volumes 3 and 4, and Yang saw her often enough to recognize her bird form. Is it too strange to think she'd be doing the same for Adam, if they were connected? (It should be noted that it's unlikely that this is just Monty signing his work. The birds in the Red and Yellow trailers are clearly the Branwen twins following Ruby and Yang, and he notably doesn't include a bird in the White trailer (even though that'd make it 4/4), possibly because it’s the one trailer that has no characters that are connected to the Branwens.

Cinder approaches both of their camps in a very similar manner/scene (making a proposition of working together, bringing Em and Merc, threatening to kill everyone there, etc, normal Cinder stuff). Adam is easily cowed by her showing of Maiden powers, whereas Raven - while still agreeing to work with her - doesn't submit easily and instead plans on (and ultimately succeeds at) backstabbing her.

It’d be entirely too fitting if one of Raven’s mistakes came back to bite Yang.

They're both emotionally manipulative towards Blake and Yang, even in a similar way: Both make excuses for their murders, both try to make themselves out to be victims, both try to scapegoat someone else, both bring up sore points (Raven brings up Blake in V5C6, Adam brings up Blake’s parents), etc. 

What is their connection?

I think Raven was Adam’s mentor. Just as Blake modeled her weapon after her mentors' (Adam and Sienna), he modeled his after Raven's. But he went a step further: he was incredibly obsessed with Raven to the point where he modeled himself after her. She taught him at least part of her fighting style - they both use Iaido, a style unique to them in the show - and in doing so also inspired his weapon: like hers, it’s a red single-edged sword with a sheathe that serves a dual function. He dressed himself like her - red and black in Japanese-esque clothing.

Eventually, though, I think they parted ways. I’m not sure why, but I doubt it was amicably. Maybe Raven found a more appealing apprentice in Spring, or maybe he just did something that she didn't like. It's hard to say, but whatever happened between them is quite possibly why Adam hates humanity so much. 

After Raven left him, he corrupted her survival-of-the-fittest/might-makes-right philosophy (“The weak die. The strong survive”) into “The Faunus are the strong ones. Humans should serve us, they are the weak ones.” He corrupted her idea of using Grimm masks to instill fear while raiding (assuming that was her original reason for using one) into using Grimm masks to instill fear into humanity as a whole. And finally, when he met a young Blake Belladonna (who looks quite a bit like Raven actually, except that - and this was key for him - she's a Faunus), he transferred his prior obsession with Raven over to her, taking her under his wing and training her to use a katana-esque sword with a sheathe that serves a second function as a weapon (sound familiar?). It’s a story of the cycle of abuse: Adam, abused by Raven, in turn abuses Blake (and tries to abuse all of humanity because he's an asshole like that).

To wrap this up, let’s quickly go through the three most popular ideas for Adam's eyes and how they fit into this theory: 

If Adam has Silver Eyes, it'd provide a reason for Raven to decide to train him. She's consolidating power/magic for herself to defend against Salem (and Ozpin), which is also why she picked up the Spring Maiden and decided to train her.

Adam having red eyes would suggest that Raven is his mom (she would likely have had him before going to Beacon in this case). I personally don't care for this, as she probably would've been underage then and I don't think RT would be willing to tell that story, and him turning out to be Yang's half-brother would makes a lot of things very complicated and possibly melodramatic.

If Adam is scarred/half-blind, Raven could've been the one who did that to him. His former mentor turning on him and trying to kill him would certainly be a good reason for him to hate humanity.

I was waiting until the Adam Short came out to write this up (in case it went into Adam’s origins prior to the WF), but now that it's here (and actually somewhat supporting the theory), here I am. Thanks for reading!

Okay guys I apologize in advance for this long post. If you read any part of it, thank you so much! I’m not sharing this to brag in any way at all. I won a Spidey contest and it was one of the most exciting things that has ever happened to me and I really wanted to share with you guys <3

So a couple weeks ago I got a message from Regal Movies saying I won their Spider-Man Homecoming contest for an autographed shirt and poster. I COULDN’T BELIEVE MY EYES OMG. Like I have never won anything like this before; to this scale. In the past when I enter contest I usually freak out and stress over it, praying that I win. But with this one I didn’t want to stress over it and end up upset, so I honestly forgot about it. Not because I didn’t really want to win (because I really really did want to win), but I just didn’t want to feel that sadness of not winning. I feel like you some of you will know what I mean. I tried not to make it a huge deal, all the way up until I got it in the mail. There was still a little part of me that thought it could be a hoax or it would get lost in the mail or something. I just didn’t want to get my hopes up the entire time. So when they finally came in the mail I couldn’t believe it. I got the shirt in the mail first, two days ago and that was so surreal.

So before I get ahead of myself, I just want to mention that I didn’t know what the prize was exactly going to be like. All regal said was “FOLLOW us & RT for a chance to win a signed Spider-Man poster & signed Tom Holland t-shirt!” There was a picture with it so I knew it was the “If You Believe in Telekinesis…” shirt which I was STOKED about because I saw Tom say in an interview that that was his favorite funny shirt from the movie. But I thought it was just a new shirt that they like got just for him to sign for the contest (if that makes any sense). And there wasn’t a distinction on who signed the poster, but I could see multiple autographs in the pic.

Anyways when I got the shirt and pulled it out of the packaging, I noticed that the words were kind of faded and I was like wait what? Then I saw there was a certificate with it, but at this point it was like I forgot to read. I was like wait did he wear this..? WAIT WAIT WHAT!!!!  I was mentally freaking out that I couldn’t properly read what it said. Like I got a part of it and that’s what continued to make me freak out. It was so cute how excited my family was too, they helped me read it during my freak out. We then realized that it was one of the shirts that TOM FREAKING HOLLAND ACTUALLY WORE TO FILM THE MOVIE LIKE WHATT. It’s one of the several that he wore to film the movie and I couldn’t freaking believe that. GUYS HE WORE THAT SHIRT LIKE WHAT THE HECK. I can’t even. And omg guys he is TINY, like I gathered that from pictures but omg this shirt is small! When my mom saw it she was all like, “oh my gosh he is so tiny!” like omg it was so adorable.

Then the next day (yesterday) I got the poster and O. M. G.

So I thought it was going to be rolled up and come in like one of those poster tubes… NOPE. it came in a HUGE FRAME!!! It was bigger than I imagined it would be and it wasn’t just signed by Tom. Which he is my fave and I would be so stoked with just his autograph but the director and the cast signed it. The QUEEN, Zendaya and BFF Jacob…Jon Watts! GUYS FREAKING ROBERT DOWNEY JR. SIGNED IT!!!! LIKE WHAT THE HECK!!

This is just proof that if you have low expectations, it’s even MORE amazing. Like Christina and I fangirled so freaking hard over this guys. She was so sweet, and so happy that I won and I was so happy to share the experience with her. That’s honestly why I want to share it with you guys! I know you are all fans of Tom and Spidey and I just wanted to share the excitement with you all <3 I hope you guys don’t think I am bragging at all, because I don’t want to seem like that at all! I freaking love you guys!! I am so grateful for everything  you guys do and love doing this journey with you guys!!!!!! I seriously can not tell you guys how much I love you or share how grateful I am!!! If you read this far or any of this long sappy post thank you so much for taking time from your day to do so!! <3

2017

The year of recovery.

Another year of doing things I’d always wanted to, right from the very start. My first New Year’s party. I rung in 2017 with my first New Year’s kiss. I went to see the ice castles. I officially dropped out of my sorority. I got out of a toxic living situation and moved into my own studio apartment and got my first taste of truly living alone. I quite like it. I got to really experiment in the kitchen for the first time and came up with some dishes I love. I got to decorate, a bit, grocery shop, all of that. It was a dimly lit apartment, but it was a space all mine. 

I went to the Vagina Monologues at Westmini and performed in the one at the U. I conquered my fear of my roommate and didn’t let her presence keep me from performing. And I was good. I was really good.

My boyfriend and I celebrated 1 year of being together and Valentine’s by going out to a fancy restaurant. The bf and I went to the ballet and got insanely good seats. $100 seats for the student price of $15? yes please. We went on a little picnic and then to Benihana for his 21st. We went to the Holi festival. We celebrated his first publication. We went to a Cold War Kids concert. We went to an art show he had pieces in. We went to another art show a mutual friend have pieces in.We went to the Tulip Festival. We went to an underground hotspring at the Homestead Crater with some Westminster friends and all got dinner at Red Rock after. We went out a few times with his friends. We went to my first Pride. We went to a baseball game and mercilessly made fun of the teams the whole time. I celebrated Eid with his family and their Bosnian Muslim community. We went to the Red Butte Gardens. We went paddleboarding/kayaking for the first time. We went to the State Fair and got the ice cream that makes you look like a dragon. We went to see bell hooks talk at UVU and then later to a MUSE concert. We went axe-throwing (he kicked my ass). We went to Antelope Island and got caught in the middle of a giant herd of bison. We went to a Halloween party hosted by the couple who’s wedding we went to last year. So many cute little dates all throughout the year - to the aquarium, to park city, to the mountains, to stargaze, etc. So many movie nights and cuddles and making food together (our lava cakes tho... so bomb). Hanging out while he did research over the summer. When I lived on my own, I texted him whenever I didn’t feel safe, and he’d come right over and just be with me. Seeing Christmas lights. Ice-skating. Him spending more time with my family, building a gingerbread town. 

I went blonde for a few months. The girl who did it first messed up and my roots were white and there was a band of darker blonde, but the salon fixed it for free. I’d always wanted to go blonde, so that was cool.

I started auditioning again, and I got a part in a commercial for a concert for the deaf and hard of hearing! A few months later, I got my first paid role in a workout series. I met with an agency, and whereas the agent told everyone else there for acting to “email me a reel, and I’ll get back to you”, she took one look at my resume and was like “this is impressive, I’ll email you about callbacks.” I went to callbacks, and they said they’d sign me if I cleared my skin, went back to my natural hair color, and brushed up a bit with some acting classes. 

I went down the southern Utah six times this year. Once with my dad and michael. Once with the whole family. Once with my dad and johnny. Once with my mom and my younger brothers. Once with my bf. Once with everyone except for mom and david. Mostly, we stuck around Snow Canyon and the outskirts of Zion. But with my dad and Johnny, we also hit up Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef. With my bf, we had a romantic bath, and spontaneously went to the Grand Canyon. 

I turned 21, and I have a whole other post about that experience lol. But it’s nice to be able to go to bars and order cocktails when I go out to eat. Amaretto is def my fav. 

I went to the lantern festival and it was as magical as that scene in Tangled made it look.

I went to Pennsylvania with my mom to visit family. We stayed in the house she grew up in, visited with family, got ice cream from my cousin’s work. Had cocktails and talked on the porch. Went out with my cousins and their friends. Went on a coal mine tour. Lots of home-cooked meals and just casually hanging out. Walking around Scranton, my mom reminiscing on her childhood. It was really lovely. 

I did a video shoot with Bella - basically a “day in the life at the stable”. She did so great with the cameras, I was impressed!

I got my tubes tied, and my boyfriend was such a support through it all. Driving me to surgery, taking care of me after, taking me to get acai bowls and play games, helping me around. Being there for me too when my parents found out and were furious. 

I’ve gotten close with Bella again. Moving back in with my parents definitely helped, because then I could see her everyday. It’s still a process, but it’s so much better than it was. Hanging out with her in the pasture. Riding for fun. Just sitting with her in her stall. I feel like I’m still somewhat scared of her after the kicking incident, but I’m slowly getting over that. I love her. I truly do. I am so grateful to have her in my life. She has been so sweet and saucy. And I feel like a good rider most of the time. I’m very grateful for things slowly going back to how they were in this regard; getting my relationship with my horse back.

Classes spring semester were again, a struggle. I just barely passed some and failed others. Mental health things, you know. Hard to pass a class when you can hardly ever go to class. Summer semester, I started off strong, but ended up dropping all my classes and taking the summer off, per my dad’s suggestion. Fall semester, I did all online, and I was able to keep up, for the most part. I passed all my classes and finally got taken off probation and put back into good-standing. For the first time since being at the U, my semester gpa was above a 2.0.

I attempted therapy multiple times, found one I liked, but the commute was 4 hours rt, so I quit fast. I recently found another, and so far, it’s alright. It’s progress, you know? Progress is important. 

I did a summer internship with the Start By Believing campaign in Salt Lake. Such an incredible experience; I felt like I was actually making a difference, and so amazing to be working alongside like-minded and determined people. 

I lost ten pounds, and have reached a point with my body where I don’t feel absolutely terrible if I overeat. I’m only 15 lbs away from my goal weight, something I can easily achieve through working out regularly and eating healthfully. Here’s to that in 2018.

I learned soooooo much about makeup, skin care, and hair care. I started investing in high end makeup. I started actually cleansing my face and exfoliating and moisturizing and all of that. I started using hair oils and the like. I can’t believe I didn’t do all of this before, especially with my dry skin and hair, but now, skin care is one of my favorite things. Sephora’s quickly become my favorite store. My hair is actually soft and silky all the time.

I went on accutane, and it’s finally starting to clear my skin! The only side effect I’ve experienced has been the extreme dryness everyone does. 

After moving back in with my family in July, my relationships with all of them have increasingly gotten better. It’s good. So good. I really regret having grown so distant over the course of college, but I’m doing my best to mend things. Thanksgiving was good; Christmas was even better. I feel like I got everyone great gifts. And I’m grateful things are better. 

I started regaining interest in things I used to love. Reading for fun. Drawing. Writing. I’ve stopped caring so much about what other people think of me. I’ve started caring more about my health. I feel like I’ve made real steps towards recovery and self-betterment this year. I’ve stopped being so tolerant of not being treated as well as I deserve. I’ve started forcing myself to do things, because I know I’ll regret it later if I don’t. I feel like I’ve made real progress as a person this year. Here’s to more of that in 2018.

Markelle Fultz is Why We Should Leave Medical Diagnoses to the Experts

Yesterday, Raymond Brothers, agent to beleaguered Philadelphia 76ers guard Markelle Fultz, told the world the source of his client’s mysterious year-and-a-half-long journey from sharpshooting first overall pick to a guy we just (generously) described as "beleaguered":

I cannot speak for you, reader, but I was surprised by this. The saga of Markelle’s hideous and profoundly ineffective shooting motion, not a problem when he was a prospect but fundamentally disqualifying when he took court as an NBA player, has been one of the strangest NBA stories imaginable. At first, I thought—everyone thought—there was something physically wrong, but as the year drifted along and Markelle continued to heave up weird horseshit with two elbows on one side of his body, it just seemed… too weird for that?

If it was physical, why was he still playing? Why couldn’t the Sixers figure out what the fuck was going on? I presumed it might have had its ORIGINS in the realm of the physical but, like, he was working with shooting coaches and whatnot. I was TOTALLY SURE it was a matter of mind and nothing else: a kid who got to the NBA and found his mind broken and strapped with an insane case of the yips. Look, I even joked about it, like two weeks ago, when the team signed known mean-ass teammate Jimmy Butler:

But guess what! I wasn’t the only one! Check out this guy, a drive time radio host from Philly!

This, of course, is incorrect. But this perception was everywhere—Drew Hanlen, a basketball skills coach of some renown, even mentioned it to longtime Philly sportswriter Bob Ford after working with Fultz over the summer summer:

Hanlen, who is based in Los Angeles, said over the summer that Fultz had to overcome a bad case of the "yips," a crisis of confidence that injected several hitches into his shooting stroke. If he overcame that, which is yet to be confirmed, he did so with hard work.

"The number of shots that people were hearing was not an overstatement. In fact, it was actually more than that," Hanlen said. "He took somewhere around 160,000 shots from June on. He worked harder than anybody I've ever had. He was putting in four and five hours a day and, honestly, work is what got him back. He's in a great place right now and he's going to continue to get better and I think he's going to add a dynamic to the Sixers that's going to really make them exciting."

Hanlen was wrong, of course. He is a shooting coach, not a doctor.

There are any number of examples and we all got it wrong. It wasn’t the yips. It was thoracic outlet syndrome, which is a notoriously difficult condition to diagnose, so it took forever to find, and rather than listen to the only guy who actually knows what his own body is feeling, everyone—writers, fans, even the organization—was sold on the Yips Theory.

Raymond Brothers is right! Any explanation relying on the perception that Fultz is mentally fragile is totally asinine! He was the top pick in the draft, he crushed in college, he has spent his life training for this, that shit doesn’t just WASH AWAY when you come into the NBA! Yet for some reason, everyone not only had a medical opinion on this story, but they almost all went with the one that made the least amount of sense! To steal a medical aphorism, everyone heard hoofbeats and thought zebras instead of horses.

Here is a rule writers and talkers such as myself should just, uhh, abide by for the foreseeable future: when it looks like there is something wrong with a player, observe what is happening, then say to yourself Hey, I am not that person's doctor, or a doctor at all. Then: shut the fuck up! Your solution to this problem will be half cocked no matter what because you are NOT A DOCTOR! You didn’t go to med school (if you did you wouldn't have had to look up that zebra/horses thing just now)! You probably didn’t even take biology in college! You probably took geology or some other much easier science, or, if you’re like me, you went to a liberal arts college and didn’t take any hard science classes at all!

And shit, even if you ARE a doctor, you’re not HIS doctor, and you’re not privy to his health information, so maybe you should also slow your roll before diagnosing someone over television for the RTs!

The only thing these theories about a dude’s physical condition do is muddy the waters, giving teams and representatives and players cover to inject misinformation into the conversation and shade things to their public relations advantage. It turns a person’s body into a PR battleground, which it is not. It is a body! You use it to get around and play sports and have sex and shit!

And hey: if it turns out this diagnosis is wrong or not helpful and Fultz is still fucked: I AM STILL RIGHT! It’s still not my job or the job of ANY reporter to do free floating speculation about a dude’s health, it does no one any good. I didn’t follow this rule, and now I feel like an asshole, and honestly I kind of think everyone else who dipped their toes in this speculative pool probably should too.

We were in much better shape; but again, he was not in pain and his door was the only thing that seemed to be damaged. ANYWAYS, I received a traffic ticket for failing to obey a traffic light which I totally accept because this was extremely stupid of me and I am planning on mailing the fine to the court.
