I would like to bring to your attention a fanfic I wrote: "Connection", set in the universe of C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series, which I adore.

I think the RTFB Podcast said it best when, describing Foreigner, they said "If Bond were an Alien, and in Downton Abbey".

My own story is an incredibly self-indulgent, thoroughly predictable Romeo and Juliet story, because I am a sap that way. But I am so super pleased with the way it turned out.

The major arc of the story appeared in my head all at once, like Athena, and like Zeus, I had a major headache until I got it out. I remember being unable to sleep, repeatedly grabbing my phone from the bed stand to jot down notes so that I wouldn't forget them. The characters simply would not stop having conversations or trying to show me something.

When I write, I usually get major scenes all at once, but the in-between parts (getting from one scene to the next) is more difficult -- I don't see those parts clearly at all, so I have to sit down at the keyboard and more or less take it on faith that if I start writing, I'll figure it out. And I do -- the connective tissue comes comes to me as I write. But what was really extraordinary about the experience of writing this particular story was the way epiphanies would strike me while I was doing this "unforeseen writing": a character, who previously was more or less a throwaway character, would suddenly step forward and demonstrate to me that no, they were in fact very important to the story, thank you very much! Or I'd be writing a description of, say, a garden fountain, and then realize that the particular flowers I was describing absolutely would be the sigil of the house and then I'd have to stop and design a sigil.

The absolute kicker was when I wrote to C.J. Cherryh and asked her for permission to make this available in PDF/ePub format and she not only said yes, but said, in regards to the world of writing, "welcome in".
