They can incarcerate my body but never my mind. —Rubin “Hurricane” Carter (May 6, 1937–April 20, 2014)
On November 7, 1985, U.S. District Court Judge H. Lee Sarokin handed down his decision to free Carter, stating that “The extensive record clearly demonstrates that [the] petitioners’ convictions were predicated upon an appeal to racism rather than reason, and concealment rather than disclosure.”
For a man who spent nearly four decades of his 76 years under the restrictive eye of the U.S. correctional system, few have ever touched as many lives as Rubin “Hurricane” Carter.
The world-class boxer turned wrongfully accused prisoner, turned advocate for the rights of the unjustly incarcerated, has succumbed to cancer, but his memory and work will endure as long as there are people outside and inside the prisons of the world fighting for justice.

James Albert Ellis (February 24, 1940 – May 6, 2014) was a mid-20th-century boxer. He won the vacant WBA heavyweight title in 1968 by defeating Jerry Quarry, making one successful title defense in the same year against Floyd Patterson, before losing to Joe Frazier in 1970.
He turned professional as a middleweight in 1961. Early in his pro career, he was trained and managed by Bud Bruner. With Bruner, he compiled a record of 15–5 (6 KOs). His five losses were decisions to top Middleweight contenders Holly Mims (whom he defeated in a rematch), Henry Hank, Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, Don Fullmer, and George Benton. This start helped his speed of punch, movement, and finesse. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

🌀 When the world seems to whirl around us, it's often the power of music that helps us find our center. As a hurricane heads our way, I find solace in the profound lyrics of Bob Dylan's "Hurricane." 🎶 Let's dive deep into the meaning of this iconic song.
"Hurricane" tells the powerful story of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a middleweight boxer who was wrongfully convicted of a triple murder in Paterson, New Jersey, in 1966. Carter and John Artis were accused and convicted based on flimsy evidence and racial bias.
Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, a promising boxer with a bright future, found himself facing life in prison due to a racially charged justice system. The song sheds light on the injustice and prejudice that Carter endured during his trial and imprisonment.
Bob Dylan was deeply moved by Carter's story and wrote "Hurricane" as a call to action against the injustice. Dylan's lyrics passionately demand a fair trial for Carter and raise awareness about the flaws in the criminal justice system.
Dylan's lyrics reflect his outrage and frustration at the injustice of Carter's conviction, making a powerful statement against racial discrimination and wrongful imprisonment. The song's refrain, "Here comes the story of the Hurricane," serves as a rallying cry for justice.

In 1967, the black boxer Rubin "Hurricane" Carter and a young acquaintance, John Artis, were wrongly convicted of triple murder by an all-white jury in Paterson, New Jersey. Over the next decade, Carter gradually amassed convincing evidence of his innocence and the vocal support of celebrities from Bob Dylan to Muhammad Ali. He was freed in 1976 pending a new trial, but he lost his appeal -- to the amazement of many -- and landed back in prison.
Carter, bereft, shunned almost all human contact until he received a letter from Lesra Martin, a teenager raised in a Brooklyn ghetto. Against his instincts, Carter agreed to meet with Martin, thus taking the first step on a tortuous path back to the world. Martin introduced him to an enigmatic group of Canadians who helped wage a successful battle to free him. As Carter orchestrated this effort from his cell, he also embarked on a singular intellectual journey, which led ultimately to a freedom more profound than any that could be granted by a legal authority.

THE HURRICANE- 1999 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
Rubin "Hurricane" Carter (Denzel Washington) is a champion boxer whos life is ruined by racist cops who falsely accuse him of murder.
He spends the next 20 years behind bars and writes his life story. A teenager names Lesra reads it and they strike up a friendship while trying to release Rube from jail.
Enjoyable drama/boxing movie.
Denzel Washington was great.
Directed by Norman Jewison.
