That song at the end of Roger Rabbit comes from this 1931 WB cartoon, which is considered a "remake" of Disney's 1927 film Trolley Troubles, starring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

Mixed Media - Live Action / Animated: Traditional

The act of combing live action and animation was a much more difficult task in the days before computers. Live action footage was shot using traditional reels of film and had to be developed and projected to be viewed and the animation side was just as tough. Characters had to be animated using paper, cels and paints. Each frame had to be hand painted onto a sheet of celluloid and photographed individually.

This lead to some of the most influential films and cartoons ever, Like who framed Roger Rabbit and countless shorts in the golden age of animation. Max Fleischer also combined this with his own rotoscoping technique in his "Out of the inkwell" cartoon Series, primarily released in the silent era. Other studios and creators also experimented, Like Hugh Harman & Rudolph Ising

Here are the two cartoons I believe demonstrate these early attempts best. I find the act of combining the two mediums of live action and animation fascinating. The pure ingenuity and creativity to overcome so many of the technical limitations of the time is so cool to me. These cartoons got me into early animation, mow I think they're getting me into mixed media

IV. 2nd story angle on Friz Freleng For Task 2

A boy walks out of high school on the final day, jumping and excited about his future. But this excitement didn't last long. It was sooner than he anticipated when he found himself sitting at the window looking out at the street, wondering if he could lead a life that was not dull as office work and such. He sees people walking on the street and he imagines what kind of life they lead; a dull, non-creative, non-colorful life.

His mother leaves the day's newspaper nearby where he would reach out and read it. And there is excitement reignited. A wanted ad calling out to young artists who can draw. The boy was young and can draw. Why not, he thought to himself. He rushed to gather up his supplies and tried to run all the way to Kansas, breathing heavily, and sweating yet the happiness in his eyes never died. But it soon did when he came to one building with the name United Film Ad Service.

He could see a line of people, all of whom trying to get the job. Oh man, he thought, I guess they'll find more professional artists among them than me. He turned with a long face and paced towards home. Right after he has gone through his front door his mother asked, 'Well, did you get the job?' How can he answer? No?

However, two weeks later, he sees the ad once again. And so he would tell himself, I would go back but this time; I won't fall back. He gathers his supplies once again and surprisingly...He got the job!

There he met several artists: Iwerks, Harman, Carman Maxwell, Rudolph Ising, and another named Walt Disney. Later in his newfound career, he would create great things and introduce countless methods to the modern animator. Synchronizing the music to animations, bringing life to Looney Tunes for Warner Bros. This isn't any animator, this is the story of Friz Freleng.

Artist Spotlight: Harman and Ising (2/3)

“Bosko, the Talk-Ink Kid” (1929)

After a year of directing Oswald cartoons, Universal put Hugh, Rudolph, and their animators out of commission by starting a new studio with Walter Lantz to produce Oswald cartoons there instead. Harman and Ising however had a back-up plan in place, they created a new character Bosko the Talk-ink Kid and copyrighted the character to themselves while transitioning studios. Although the character was inspired by black stereotypes of the time, Harman and Ising used synchronized dialogue and lip-sync for Bosko - a then new and incredible feat for animated cartoons. Their test film impressed a Warner Bros. producer, Leon Schlesinger, and hired Harman and Ising to produce a series of cartoons for the studio: Looney Tunes starring Bosko. Harman and Ising hired animators and artists they worked with over to Warner Bros. to work on their cartoons, including Isadore “Friz” Freleng who worked with them since Walt’s Alice Comedies.

Harman and Ising saw how successful their old boss Walt was getting with his Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphonies cartoons. Harman encouraged Ising an the artists to try and equal their now rival’s success with their cartoons. Ontop of Bosko, they created plenty of other Mickey Mouse-ish characters and the Merrie Melodies cartoons as their own musical cartoon sub-series. Merrie Melodies then, rather than being a second name to the Looney Tunes cartoons as it is seemed now, were Warner Bros’ way to feature and promote music they owned or sublicensed. Harman and Ising left Warner Bros. in 1933 over budget and wage disputes, setting shop under RKO and Van Beuren over the next two years.

35. the queen was in the parlor (1932)

another cartoon with goopy geer! the last merrie melody, moonlight for two, DID star goopy geer, but i was hesitant to say so, unsure of whether it was just a lookalike, but the fact that he’s in this merrie melody leads me to believe that he was a bit of an entity for awhile. as the title suggests, the king returns to his castle to find his queen in the parlor, refusing to see anyone else.

as all good cartoons do, this one opens with a swaggering king atop his mule, greeted to thunderous applause as he steps off and marches down the aisle, eating up the attention.

quickly he grows tired of the “long live the king!” chants, snarling “but where’s the queen?” a group of knights whisper “the queen!” to each other down the line (imagine “hermie doesn’t want to make toys” from the rudolph special. it’s basically that), including a stereotypical jewish king at the end of the line. that certainly didn’t age well and makes me cringe as i watch it, but i digress.

a group of squires launch into a call and response rendition of “the queen was in the parlor”, the king providing various interjections throughout. love the barbershop harmonies as always! gags including a mouse popping out of a knight’s helmet to interject a verse, and a dog (an actual dog) clad in armor itches itself through the armor and lets out a bunch of fleas that have been hiding.

look at the personality in that walk! you know me, i’m all about my walk cycles and how they’re great indicators of personality when executed properly. great example of a prideful, no-nonsense and ultimately hard-to-take-seriously walk! the king marches into the castle to see what the fuss is about.

it turns out the queen WAS in the parlor! who would’ve guessed? she’s knitting away at a sock, while the poodle from the goopy geer cartoons (and freddy the freshman) is riveting away at a suit of armor. the king enters as his throne takes a life of its own and scuttles up to him, ready to be sat on in an act of servitude.

the king summons his jester, who is none other than goopy geer. again, another great walk cycle! unfortunately, it doesn’t say too much about his personality: it seems he adapts to whatever setting he’s in, whether he’s a lounge piano player, a redneck, or a jester. gotta give him credit on his versatility, though!

goopy provides a few bars about the king (old king cole), who “called for his crooners three!” the dog on his jester stick(?) says “crosby, columbo, and vallee!”,

which prompts the rudy vallee caricature from crosby, columbo, and vallee to pop out of a jack in the box and sing “for you”. i love my caricatures, so i find this particularly amusing, especially when old king cole hits rudy on the head and gripes “I’D RATHER HEAR AMOS N’ ANDY!”, a reference to the popular radio comedy show hosted by freeman gosden (amos) and charles corell (andy). unfortunately, as you can probably guess, the comedy show was a minstrel show—but it was adapted to television in 1951 where actual black actors took the stage. you learn something everyday! even though i was oblivious to what amos ‘n andy was until a google search later, the delivery is spot on and the joke hits just as well. i’m loving this bastard of a king—finally, personality!

after a brief impression of amos ‘n andy (again, this aged poorly), goopy skips down through the parlor, pressing his ear to a door. a dog, doing an impression of tony wons, asks “are ya listenin’?” he raises his fist and asks “HMMM?” to which goopy stammers “yeah, i’m walter winchell”, referring to newspaper columnist and radio commentator walter winchell, known for trading gossip around. a few alcohol bottles explode and goopy runs towards the camera, yelling “OKAY, CHICAGO!”, another reference to winchell. even though these icons aren’t at all relevant or known today, these jokes still fascinate me and i can only imagine how funny they were to a relevant audience!

we have our standard merrie melodies dancing interlude, with goopy dancing around and bouncing his feet off of a few spittoons. fun synchronization as always! there’s also a shot of a cat (the one from it’s got me again!) hunting a mouse, but getting scared off once the mouse emerges from its hole, clad in armor.

once more, the villain enters! he slams the door in the face of the fan-faring trumpeter, who blows out a few notes (sounding like a car horn) on his crinkled horn. the trademark “harman-ising flameball spit” comes into play once the villain spits on a suit of armor, reducing it to nothing but bones.

the poodle girl who was riveting a suit of armor is singing, and the villain advances on her, ready to kidnap. he runs off with her captive, but goopy swoops in to save the day.

spittoons, flaming spit, villains, damsels in distress, all of the essentials to a harman-ising produced cartoon all in one! sword fights can also be added to that list as goopy and the kidnapper engage in combat. goopy momentarily gets thrown into a cabinet, the crash forming a suit of armor made of pots and pans. goopy charges are the villain, who swings at him. now, a stuffed goat’s head falls on goopy.

in the manner of a goat, goopy rams into the villain, forcing his armor to break. the villain is exposed in his long underwear, and in some delightful, melty, rubber hose goodness, he mixes the shrapnel in a cocktail shaker (just like bosko in ups ‘n downs) and pours himself a brand new suit of armor, iris out as he runs for the hills.

as for as merrie melodies go, this one wasn’t half bad! the highlight of the short was definitely old king cole. i love him! i wish he had a bigger role in the short, he’s oozing with personality and all sorts of great possibilities. no offense to goopy, but he doesn’t do much for me. he’s pretty bland and lacking in personality, maybe even moreso than foxy and piggy. he comes off as more of a plot vehicle than a standalone character. i enjoyed the celebrity references—i learned some interesting new information today (though goopy talking in a minstrel dialect doesn’t age well at all, even for a quick joke, and the jewish knight joke is in extremely poor taste). there are better merrie melodies out there, but there are worse ones, too. i’d give it a watch, just because the king amuses me so much, but it wouldn’t be a crime if you skipped it this time.

ABD’nin Huawei’ye uyguladığı sert ambargo halen etkisini sürdürürken, görevini devretmesine günler kala eski ABD Başkanı Donald Trump, Çinli şirket Xiaomi’nin kara listeye eklendiğini Ocak ayında açıklamıştı.

ABD Başkanı Trump, Xiaomi’yi Çin ordusu ile ilişkisi olması sebebiyle kara listeye eklemiş, şirket ise karşı açıklama yaparak bu iddiaları reddetti. Geçtiğimiz gün açıklanan mahkeme kararı Xiaomi lehine sonuçlandı.

ABD’nin açtığı davayı Xiaomi kazandı

Trump yönetiminin son günlerinde, Savunma Bakanlığı Xiaomi’yi Çin ordusuyla bağlantılı olduğu iddia edilen şirketler listesine ekledi ve önümüzdeki hafta yürürlüğe girmesi planlanan mali kısıtlamaları uyguladı. Ancak dün, ABD Bölge Yargıcı Rudolph Contreras, ilgili kararın keyfi bir şekilde alındığına karar verdi. Böylece şirketi yasal işlem haklarından mahrum bırakan bir davada Xiaomi’nin yasağı geçici olarak durdurdu.

Contreras, Xiaomi’nin dava ilerledikçe yasağı tamamen iptal edebileceğini söyledi. Ayrıca şirketin “telafisi mümkün olmayan zararlara” maruz kalmasını önlemek için emir çıkardı. Yasak duyurulduktan sonra, akıllı telefon üreticisi ABD borsalarından listeden çıkma ve küresel karşılaştırma endekslerinden silinme olasılığıyla karşı karşıya kaldı.

Xiaomi’den yapılan açıklamaya göre, mahkemenin orduyla olan bağlantısını yasadışı ilan etmesini ve atamayı kalıcı olarak kaldırmasını talep edileceği açıklandı.

“primer corte” Los looney tunes y la irreverencia eterna

Cuando la Warner bros quiso expandir su alcance tras imponer el cine sonoro decidió aprovechar la fama creada por Mickey mouse para entrar en el campo de la animación, para lograrlo hizo un trato con  Leon Schlesinger,  Rudolph Ising y Hugh Harman quienes fueron antiguos empleados de Disney, y así se crearía a bosko la primera estrella animada de warner.

Bosko fue un personaje registrado como un “negro boy” el cuya apariencia intentaría acercarse a la del gato felix, su primera aventura seria Sinkin' In The Bathtub un corto donde el llevara a su novia “honey” de paseo.

En lo que respecta a la trama esta es similar a las demás animaciones de la época, pero este corto resalta por dos aspectos: el primero es que es extremadamente musical demostrando con total transparencia el deseo de Warner de imponer el cine sonoro, y la segunda es que en este corto podemos ver unas pequeñas muestras de lo que serían las producciones animadas de Warner bros en el futuro.

Hoy en día la Warner añade un aviso en sus clásicos donde dejan en claro que los ideales que tenían en esa época no son los mismos que tienen hoy en día, esto se debe a que las animaciones de antaño de los looney eran políticamente incorrectas (aunque vale aclarar que para los estándares de esa época no se consideraban incorrectos), y por su puesto Sinkin' In The Bathtub no sería la excepción.

Si bien siendo estrictos la caricatura no es directamente racista algunas personas podrían considerar que la caricaturización de los afroamericanos a través de Bosko y Honey si lo es, pero hay que reconocer que este sería el comienzo de los provocadores intentos de Warner por sacar a la animación del molde creado por Disney.

Sinkin' In The Bathtub es un corto que fascina mas por lo que lo rodea que por sí mismo, representa la creación de los looney tunes, la expansión del cine sonoro, la creación de un estudio de animación por antiguos empleados de Disney (tendencia que se repetiría bastante con la historia) y la exploración de nuevos tópicos en la animación, en resumen un trabajo tan único que solo sería posible hacerse una vez en la historia
