What’s in a Name | Part 3 | Ruffthrok
Tumblr media
Other Articles in the “What’s in a Name” series:
(Minlout | Heathlegs)
So yeah, this got started far later than what I had intended. I apologize. Got sidetracked, busy, and the usual excuses. But now we’re here — the final article of the “What’s in a Name” series!!! How exciting! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been having a blast figuring out the name meanings of these characters! XD
So first off, let me say that Ruffnut’s name meaning took me a LONG TIME to deal with because Ruff- and -nut had A LOT of meanings! So I basically had to pick and choose the ones that most fit Ruffnut — which was pretty much everything that’s on the chart! I have to say that DreamWorks named her well!
So yeah... at first, I thought that they were willy-nilly with the name, but upon coming across these meanings, it turns out that Ruffnut couldn’t have been better named than this! lol XD
Needless to say, that’s pretty much it on Ruffnut, since, you know... there’s not really anything new or interesting or surprising, considering that we pretty much knew this from the get-go.
But... what DID surprise me was Throk’s name!
It was pretty difficult to find. In fact, since this was an original name DreamWorks made, I honestly didn’t think I’d be able to find it and just originally assumed that they borrowed it from Hrok, Thor, Thror and/or other Old Norse names, and didn’t think much about it.
That is... until I came across this on the Old Norse dictionary site I found (the link to it is here):
Tumblr media
þrek — or threk — could possibly be where “Throk” originated — if Throk, as a name, existed at all.
(Of course, due to how hard it was to find this, it’s highly doubtful that DreamWorks knew about this, since the show has VERY rudimentary level of Old Norse and the like, period. It’s more likely that they made the name as a variant of “Hrok” or “Thror” or some other Viking name.)
What makes this such an amazing discovery is that its meaning is “fortitude or strength”, which fits Throk to a T (literally)!! Even more interesting is that Throk could be a variant of the name Thor, who is a god of thunder and strength, conveniently enough. And “-rok”, if Anglicized into “rock”, would be even more convenient, since, rocks are known for their fortitude and strength, which further strengthens (pun intended) the meaning and logic behind the Old Norse “threk” being the source of Throk’s name.
As you know, strength and fortitude might as well be Throk’s right and left arms at this point. Heck, even his middle name (even though Vikings never had middle names, even to this day [talking about modern-day Icelanders, not modern-day Scandinavians])! Throk, since his introduction in the RTTE series in the final episode of Season 3, has always been shown as an individual full of strength and fortitude — as one would need to be as a Chieftain’s second-in-command and general-cum-bodyguard.
So yeah, discovering the meaning of Throk’s name has really made me fall in love with Throk as a character even more! Can’t wait to implement this in some Throk-centric fanfics!! ^_^
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this final installment of the “What’s in a Name?” series. With this done, I shall do more articles on these three pairings in the near future. Thank you again for reading, and again, apologies that this took so long to finish.
Keep Calm and Ship Ruffthrok!

An Apology and an Announcement Concerning Fanfics
Tumblr media
Hey, guys! I apologize that I’ve been absent for most of the year, and that I haven’t been writing a whole lot of fics lately. Been life, procrastination, and being in other Fandoms, I haven’t been able to sit down and work on anything for our three favorite pairings. Sorry guys. 😟
That being said, I do plan on getting some fics written for them soon. The main project will be a Thanksgiving one-shot for Minlout where Snotlout has dinner with her family. I also plan on writing some Minlout and maybe Heathlegs fics based on the Sagas. Also working on a short story for Heathlegs where Fishlegs has to complete an Impossible Quest in order to win Heather’s hand in marriage.
Oh, and the Ruffthrok Name Meanings article... I’m still working on that. I got distracted with fanfics and anime and didn’t get to work on it, hehe. 😅
The BIG project I plan to do is a College AU that focuses on Fishlegs and Snotlout, with Heathlegs being the endgame (Minlout will be in another story), and the story will be called “College Years”. I’m pretty excited about this. I’m just excited in general that I’m finally beginning to slowly get back into writing fics for our pairings. Can’t wait!!!
(Be on a lookout for a future post that will contain summaries for my future projects for Minlout, Heathlegs, and Ruffthrok.)

Return of the Names
Hey, guys! I’m back! Sooo... I know you guys have probably been waiting for the Name Meaning posts for Heathlegs and Ruffthrok. I’m so sorry that I took a hiatus. Wasn’t expected. The good news is that I’m back and that I’ve finished the name meanings for Heathlegs and Ruffthrok, and now all I need to do is to write the articles. I should be done with them in the next few days.
Again, sorry for the wait, but I hope that it’ll be worth it. ^_^

What’s in a Name | Part 2 | Heathlegs
Tumblr media
Hello, everyone! After a several-month-long hiatus (sorry for that), I’m back with the second article of the “What’s in a Name” mini-series — and this time, with Heathlegs.
(Minlout | Ruffthrok)
Now, as you can see, unlike with the Minlout chart, in which neither of the characters had much of a selection concerning the meanings of their names, the members of Team Heathlegs actually have a lot of definitions to their names. Fishlegs had so many, in fact, that I had to pick and choose which definitions to have in this chart! And, as you can see, it was a bit of a tight fit; I actually had to resize this a few times in order to fit all of that in his section! It was messy. (I had forgotten how many uses “fish” has in the English language. lol XD)
Fishlegs
Now, of course, Fishlegs, having the disadvantage of not having a name with some historical influence, makes it difficult to pinpoint any exact meaning that be “deep” or anything — but that doesn’t mean that I won’t try! And just because it’s a Hooligan name, doesn’t mean I can’t try to give it some neat meaning, eh? ;-)
Now, if we ignore the most obvious meaning of Fishlegs’ name — that is, literally, “a fish with legs” — the possibilities are endless.
Here are most of the definitions of “fish”:
Edible vertebrates that live in the water.
The zodiacal sign and constellation Pisces.
A person who is strange in a specific way.
To search, by groping or feeling for something concealed.
A flat piece of metal, wood, or another material used to give additional strength to a beam or joint as a temporary repair, such as a ship's mast or spar.
Let me tell you, I never expected that Fish was attributed to the constellation Pisces (even though Pisces is Latin for “fish”). Though, if I’m honest, I’m not very knowledgeable with the constellations.
To be honest, with Fishlegs being Fishlegs, and with his family clan having a strength in oral and written knowledge, this fits him. In fact, this fits him A LOT!
Not only could this be when Fishlegs was born, as Pisces comes around on February 19th to March 20th (which would make Hiccup a Pisces, I guess), but Fishlegs could’ve very well been named after this constellation by his parents either because of this and/or because of his parents’ love for knowledge and astronomy, knowing the symbolic nature of Pisces. (Or it could just be that they just REALLY love fish.)
Honestly, this is probably the best and most plausible headcanon for Fishlegs’ name I could ever make — aside from the possibility that Fishlegs is just... Fishlegs, and has no relative meaning at all. But I refuse to entertain that possibility.
The next one (that’s not in the chart, but I decided to note it, anyway) is when one is fishing... for fish. With a hook, net, etc. Which, according to my headcanon, fits Fishlegs’ family, as one of their main occupations is the fishing industry and as traders. Which would explain Fishlegs’ appearance: he looks like he comes from a wealthy family. (I’ll explain this more in a later article.)
“Fish” is also a slang term for a person who is strange in a specific way. Which is actually interesting to note, since fish are strange in general; and Fishlegs is most definitely “strange” in that he, along with his family, don’t share the love for battle that the other Hooligans seem to have, and prefer being philosophers than warriors (though that didn’t necessarily stop them from participating during the Dragon Wars and others). Fishlegs is also “strange” for being very affectionate and... compassionate and... stuff — which aren’t Viking traits, to be sure. To prevent from explaining further and making this longer than it already is, I’ll just nip it in the bud and say that, in general, Fishlegs is considered by many to be strange (save us in the modern era, who are similar to him).
Of course, we know that he’s not strange at all. But back then, in Viking Times, it would’ve. But we must take note that Heather never viewed Fishlegs like that. From their first meeting in “The Heather Report”, she’s accepted and liked who he was and was drawn to, and had great respect for, his intelligence. She even told Astrid in “Have Dragon, Will Travel” that she preferred a smart man over a man with brawn — like Fishlegs (who, conveniently, has BOTH). Fishlegs definitely has a different perspective on life and in general that Heather appreciates and Hiccup uses to their advantage during their adventures and battles.
(Though I have to take note that Fishlegs was very fortunate that Snotlout was such a pompous idiot... or else Mrs. Lout probably could’ve ended up becoming a reality had Snotlout been more... I don’t know, like Hiccup. More smart, humble, and sensitive. lol XD)
Another definition of “fish” is to search, grope, or feel for something concealed — like searching for something in your pocket or a bag or sack. Fishlegs, of course, is known for always “fishing” for things: whether it’s documents, information, maps, charcoal pencils, food — whatever! And curiously enough, it also seems to imply and symbolize Heather’s predicament, who has been searching for a home and a place to belong “since the first time he met her,” and it also sums up their relationship quite nicely. It’s beautiful. :’)
(I also think it’d be hilarious if this was also because Fishlegs was being difficult during the birthing process, so one of the midwives had to “fish” for Fishlegs in the canal in order to get him out, hence the name. lol XD)
The last definition is an interesting one — and one I’ve never heard before:
A flat piece of metal, wood, or another material used to give additional strength to a beam or joint as a temporary repair, such as a ship's mast or spar.
I really love this concept in defining Fishlegs; it has something to do with his family — due to my head canon of his family being fishers/traders — and it sums up who he is nicely. Not only is he strong and a steadfast support, but he also is kinda the healer of their group. And aside from Hiccup, Fishlegs is also the mediator within the group and keeps the group balanced. He also helps Hiccup with literal repairs.
To be honest, I can see Fishlegs’ family being shipbuilders, too — having their hands in a lot of honey pots, as it were. lol ^_^
Anyway, now to the “-legs” part of his name. Here are the following definitions:
Appendages of humans and animals.
Used to refer to the sustained popularity or success of a product or idea.
A section or stage of a journey or process.
Again, ignoring the obvious literal “fish legs” meaning.
The definition of “referring to the sustained popularity or success of a product or idea” is actually an interesting one. Another one that I’ve never heard of. Very educational. This fits Fishlegs; he’s full of ideas, and they tend to *usually* work and successful. And like Hiccup, Fishlegs makes things, too. So, basically, this sums up Fishlegs’ character.
The other definition is “a section of stage of a journey or process.” Which, when you think about it, sums up Fishlegs’ entire character arc. I mean, we see him from HTTYD 1, to RoB and DoB, to RTTE, and the latter 2 films, and we gradually see him changing from a timid, cowardly, unconfident, and nervous individual to someone who ends up being brave, heroic, confident, stands up for himself, more outgoing, steadfast, a warrior even, and someone that can be depended on. This entire arc was definitely a journey of self-discovery for Fishlegs. I mean, it was for the entire Gang, but still.
Also, this could also apply to astronomy and the movement of planets and stars, etc.
Of course, leg(s) has LOTS of definitions; but I don’t have the time, room, nor relevance to include them. So these were the three definitions for “legs” that I felt was more appropriate and plausible for Fishlegs’ name.
So that is everything that you now know about Fishlegs.
Now, on to Heather’s name.
Heather
Heather’s name, while having undergone much scrutiny and criticism in the past, does, in fact, fit Heather and her character arc. And is not a Mary Sue name. As you will see below, Heather is a Scandinavian name, and is, in fact, plausible for her to have that name. The Old Norse word for heather is “ling”, so some variant was used for the name (though I’ve yet to find any Old Norse names rooted from this word). Not only that, but as I believe in my head canon that she has some Anglo-Saxon blood in her family lineage, she could’ve easily have been named by one of those relatives.
Here are some fun facts about the name — and the flower — Heather:
Of Anglo-Saxon, Scots, Irish, Dutch, German, and Scandinavian origin.
A hardy and beautiful cluster of flowers that live in hilly and rocky areas and blooms in the winter, giving it the appropriate name, "Queen of Winter."
Symbolises independence, protection, strength, admiration, solitude, beauty, and good fortune.
Comes in white, purple, red, or even pink colors.
Were used to stuff mattresses and induce sleep.
Were also used to make aromatic brooms to sweep and clean their homes.
As Heather is a flower-based name, there’s not really much to add on other than getting into the symbolism and meanings of the flower and its uses.
The Heather plant was often used to stuff mattresses and induce sleep, and were also used to make homemade brooms to sweep and clean house interiors. Interestingly enough, the genus name for this flower is Calluna, which possibly comes from the Greek Kallyno “beautify, sweep clean” — an appropriate choice, I dare say. This is a wonderful reference to her domestic life with her foster family and Tribe.
The flowers also come in a variety of colors: white, purple, red, and even pink. (Heather also becomes those colors as well. Hehe.)
Also like the flower/plant, Heather is independent, wanting to do things herself and is reluctant to ask for help, and she survived for years on her own. Heather is strong, both physically and mentally, and despite the trials and struggles that Life throws at her, she stands strong and fights back; she’s a fierce warrior as well; and like how the heather plant protects, our Heather is willing to fight to the death to protect those she holds dear and cares about.
Heather is also beautiful, like the flower, both physically and in personality; but it’s a mellow beauty, not loud and gaudy in nature. She is also admired by many and admires many in return, reaping great respect from her friends and allies. Heather also represents solitude, and our girl has had a tough time, and has had to deal with her trials alone for so long that she almost prefers to remain alone — until Fishlegs and the Gang came along. She is finally, like the flower, the symbol of good fortune; not only has she found a family in Fishlegs and the Gang, and their dragons, and in her foster parents and in Windshear, but she has also lived a good life and has even managed to build a home with her birth Tribe, the Berserkers. She also has been good luck to Hiccstrid and has been an steadfast supporter for her best friends to get together; and lastly, she has been a source of inspiration and companionship for Fishlegs and they have had a strong bond since they had been reunited.
A fitting name for a fitting maiden. ^_^
<><><><><><><>
Conclusion
So in conclusion to this very long article, these are the points you should take away from this article:
Fishlegs’ birthday could plausibly be around February or March.
Fishlegs’ parents could’ve named him after the Pisces constellation, or something that was tied to their profession as fishers/traders.
Fishlegs’ name could just be what it is due to a stupid Hooligan tradition of naming children, but we shall ignore that to the best of our ability.
The name Heather is of Scandinavian origin just as much as it is of Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Dutch, and German origin.
Heather’s name FITS her character. End of story.
The Heather flower/plant is a pretty neat flower/plant
It’s also tough and hardcore. Practically shouts “Screw you, Winter, I’m growing and blooming whether you like it or not!” the whole season long. Love it. lol XD
Heather is practically the plant/flower personified!
Heathlegs really are meant to be together.
<><><><><><><>
Hope you enjoyed reading this article, and I hope that you’ve gained more appreciation for Heathlegs, and the characters themselves. Thank you for reading this and hope to see you soon.
I will be posting the third and final installment of the “What’s in a Name” miniseries at a later date, which will get into the name meanings of Ruffthrok (Ruffnut/Throk). Hope you’ll stick around for that. I promise that it won’t take so long to post it. No several-month-long hiatuses, I swear. lol XD
Until next time.

What’s In A Name - Part 1 - Minlout
Tumblr media
Minlout Name Meanings by Minlout3Heathlegs3RuffthrokFan
Part 1 of the “What’s In A Name” collection for Minlout, Heathlegs, and Ruffthrok.
.
(Heathlegs | Ruffthrok)
.
Special thanks to @imaginativemind29 for finding the origins and meaning of Minden’s name. Greatly appreciate it. ^_^
.
So I decided to make a little edit/photo that went into the definitions of Snotlout and Minden’s names. And I have to say that I wasn’t disappointed. ^_^
So I discovered that part of Snotlout’s name was actually historically accurate (whether DreamWorks knew of it or not). Snot- comes from the Old Norse word, Snotr, which means “clever, wise, or prudent,” which I thought was so ironic, considering Snotlout’s entire character arch. But it’s also great foreshadowing because it hints at what Snotlout’s meant to become and will be... in time (which we get to see in isolated episodes but we definitely start seeing by Season 4, when Snotlout decides to be his own man).
The meaning of Minden’s name is just... it’s so beautiful... I can’t even. XD :’)
I mean... look at it! I don’t believe it’s a coincidence that she was named that. It’s as if she was named that to signify that Minlout was always meant to be. I mean, “Mine-Yours”? Every time Snotlout or Minden says her name, it’s almost like a declaration of love and devotion. As if they’re saying, “You are mine; I am yours. To halves to one heart.” It’s just so precious, I can’t even... GAH! XD :’)
But there’s also another deeper message behind saying “Minden” (Mine-Yours):
The names come from a statement made by a Saxon duke after he converted to Christianity and made peace with King Karl the Great (aka Charlemagne) in the 8th century. After forming and signing the peace treaty at his castle at the river Weser, he said:
"Diese Burg soll nun min und din sein." (This castle shall now be mine and yours.)
So it got the name Min-Din (Mine-Yours) that was later written Minden (the town).
But seriously: “This CASTLE shall now be mine and yours.” Does anyone realize just how significant this is?
This reminds me of the scene at the beginning of the “Alvin and the Outcasts” episode in Riders of Berk, when Snotlout makes a Viking version of a ‘sandcastle’ and calls it “Snotlout Manor”. He then says this, afterwards:
Tumblr media
Manors were fortified houses (also were sometimes synonymous with keeps) or even a simple keep with a wall during the entire middle ages — and many have existed, survived, and are still maintained throughout human history into the modern era. Anyone from aristocrats to nobles of various rank — even among the members of royalty — had them with the fief system. They were little mini-castles in their own right.
And I’m sure you’re aware of the old proverb: “A man’s home is his castle”?
Well, think about it... “This castle shall now be mine and yours,”... “A man’s home is his castle.”...
If a man’s home is his castle... and if his castle shall be "mine and yours”... Can you guess where I’m going with this? ,’:-)
“A man’s home is his castle. And his castle shall now be Min-Din.” Or ‘Minden,’ in this case.
Huh? Huh? How COOL is that?!
And we can do this backwards as well! Check this out...
“Minden shall now be his castle. And his castle is his home.”
Are you a puddle of feels right now? Because I certainly am! XD
So essentially, if Snotlout were to say this, he’d be saying: “Minden is my castle; and my castle is my home,” or “My castle shall now be Minden’s,” or “My castle is my home, and my home is Minden.” This is just really hitting me in the feels right now!
Another way to see this that’s of great significance would be if Snotlout created Snotlout Manor (like in preparation for marriage or something) and said: “This castle (or manor) shall now be mine and yours,” or “This castle (or manor) shall now be Minden.” That would be so powerful and amazing and the way he would look at her when he said it and the way she’d start tearing up... I just... I’m seriously gushing and fanboying over this.
Honestly, a minor pairing shouldn’t be turning me into a giant puddle of fluffy feels, but it is. And I’m loving every bit of it! ^_^
But can you imagine the scene that I’ve just shown above where Snotlout says, “This is Snotlout Manor — and all I need now is a queen.” and does that with Minden? And the deep meanings and symbolism by using Minden’s name, on top of his “castle” Snotlout Manor, would just be so lethally potent that it should be illegal! lol XD
Also, the fanon definitions/meanings of Minden’s name I gleaning just from the town and fortress by itself by what they represent. Which, in my opinion, fits Minden perfectly.
<><><><><><><>
Conclusion
So in conclusion, here’s the summary of this article for you to glean from:
Snotlout DOES, in fact, have a historical element to his name, surprisingly enough.
Snot- is from the Old Norse, meaning “wise, prudent, or clever.” (Clearly his mother’s doing, I’m sure of it.)
It fits him more when he learns to stop fighting it and accept his character arc.
Minden is a historical name of German origin.
Minden comes from the phrase “min-din”, meaning “mine-yours”, and originated from the Charlemagne Period.
It’s a name given to the castle of the same name where the peace treaty was signed between Charlemagne and the Saxons in the 700s AD.
The message behind it is just so beautiful, I could cry. :’)
If this doesn’t get you to ship Minlout, nothing will.
Minlout was obviously meant to be. This is Fate, has to be!
Anyway, this is my article — and Part 1 of the mini-series — concerning Minlout’s name meanings. I really hope that this has not only been an educating experience, but also gives you inspiration and a new-found love for the Minlout pairing. I, for one, am in love all over again, and am now an even bigger fan of the pairing. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they were meant to be! No way they could NOT be S.O.s with THOSE names!
Their name meanings just bring a whole new entire layer of depth into their relationship dynamic, their pairing, and their character archs. I’m just so hyped right now! You can be certain that bits and pieces of this will most definitely end up becoming one-shots, one way or the other! ^_^
I know this was a little long, but this really was worth it. I hope, at least, you’ve enjoyed reading this as much as I’ve enjoyed writing this. I’m not even sure that I’ll be able to sleep now! lol XD
Thank you for taking some time out of your busy schedules to come and read this. Please spread this around and make it viral. This pairing deserves it! And please keep an eye out for Part 2 of my “What’s In A Name” mini-series — next pairing shall be Heathlegs. So be on the lookout, fellow shippers!
Keep Calm and Ship Minlout!

My One Disappointment with “Ruff Transition”
Tumblr media
Hello, everyone. Today, I want to talk about the one HUGE thing that made “Ruff Transition” (Season 6/Episode 7) such a disappointment for me — something that I’m sure many of you might’ve noticed as well.
Minden and Nadia aren’t in this episode.
You have NO idea how disappointed I was to notice that they were absent from the episode. I mean, Nadia, I didn’t really care about. It was really Minden that I wanted to see.
Why? Well... I wanted to see more Minlout interactions, you know? They really hit it off in “Chain of Command” and I wanted more of that — like the greedy glutton that I am. lol XD
I realize that they weren’t in the episode because their voice actresses weren’t there, probably, but still. I wanted more Minlout interactions! Is that so bad?
Okay, so let’s just ignore that particular tidbit and wonder what Minden and Nadia could be doing if Atali is here. I mean, they’re usually joined with her at the hip, being her subordinates and all.
But then I realized something.
It’s the Grand Transition — a time when the older hatchlings return to the nest, while new ones come to “vill the void”. And Atali mentions this as being one of the busiest times for them. Which causes me to think of a few reasons as to why Minden and Nadia aren’t there:
1. They, like Atali, are also training the new recruits in caring for their Razorwhip hatchlings. Or they’re leading the other groups (not newbies) in caring for the hatchlings.
2. They’re busy taking care of the day-to-day tasks of the Tribe while Atali is busy training the new recruits. Which is a great possibility. After all, this would be a time that would make both the Razorwhips and the Wingmaidens highly vulnerable (as we see later on in the episode when Krogan and the Hunters attack Wingmaiden Island), so it would make sense for them to make sure everything’s running smoothly and organizing the patrols and defenses (per Atali’s orders via Hiccup’s suggestion).
3. They’re off doing a census of the Razorwhip population on the north side of the island (where the nests are located). I’m not sure if they’d do it at THIS time of year, but what do I know about Wingmaiden culture? It’s all speculation at this point.
4. All of the above.
These reasons could easily explain why they weren’t around when the Hunters attacked Atali and the others if they were busy doing other tasks on other parts of the island. Nothing else makes sense (that I could see, anyway).
However, I’m holding out on the hope — and am fact making it my headcanon/canon — that Snotlout and Minden were able to spend some time together one night and playing catch-up. I mean, the Gang WERE there for a couple of days and nights. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they met in-between scenes in the episode.
In fact, it’s probable that Minden and Nadia WERE with the others during the feast before Atali led the Gang to the chamber where the ceremony began. I mean, feasts are usually customary in a celebration, right?
I’m shipping it as canon. Minden and Snotlout DID meet behind the scenes in the episode, but just wasn’t shown. I need to believe that, or else I’m going to go crazy. lol XD
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my random article on the sketchy likelihood that Snotlout and Minden reunited in the episode without us knowing about it. This just shows how much I love Minlout. lol XD
