Lucy remembered being young, a little girl. Her vault suit covered in dirt and the heels of her hands scrapped, bleeding. It seemed like the worst that could ever happen to anyone, like her entire existence had been turned on its axis, like the end of the world to a child. Then, her mother standing in front of her, gentle hands cleaning the wounds. Whispering soft, comforting words: "Ten fingers, ten toes," in a sing-along tone that always made Lucy smile. "And I'd love you even if you had none." Now, as she stared at the test results, with her entire existence truly turned on its axis and nobody there to lift her off the ground, she missed her mother more than ever.
