Rated Teen, 4000 words, Rushu/Venli The Queen of Urithiru has gifted Venli with a research assistant. While she would prefer to simply refuse this, to send Rushu back to her mistress, that may be too much of an insult, even for Venli. Thus, their shared work begins. Despite Timbre's pulses to the contrary, Venli is sure nothing will come of this.

Looking up from the book she was in the middle of writing, Venli considered the figure who’d invaded her chamber, giving her a harsh stare. “...repeat that for me. You’re here because...?” Venli asked, her words hitting the jagged notes of the Rhythm of Irritation.

“Queen Navani requested I attend you so long as you stay in Urithiru,” the human explained, their tone frustratingly lax.

“I see.” A gesture of goodwill, Venli guessed. Judging by the human’s bald head, they were an ardent. Pulling from the gifts of her Envoyform, she knew that in Vorin cultures, ardents were literal property, though unlike the singers, their bondage was voluntary. To gift Venli this ardent was like the host presenting their guest with proper furnishings for her chambers. “Your name?”

Did the human’s lips twitch? Was that a smile? “Rushu, Envoy Venli.”

“What if I do not wish to entertain this insult from your Queen?” Venli pushed, speaking to Reprimand. “I have much to learn, much to record, and much to pursue. I am uninterested in being saddled with you .” Inside her gemheart, Timbre pulsed to the same rhythm, but Venli knew that from her bonded spren, the message was for Venli. She was frustrated by Venli’s unnecessary aggression.

The entire point of returning to Urithiru was to reclaim the role she’d once abandoned, to record the stories and songs of her people, and to learn as much as she could to take back and share with them. Perhaps she could discover new forms, this time without cheating.

Venli tapped her long, thin fingers on the hardwood desk before her. Timbre was right, but what did the spren expect? Venli could not help but to be who she was. Venli hurt people.

And yet, Rushu seemed unphased, if Venli was reading their expression correctly. “I suppose I would inform the Queen, and go back to assisting her with her studies.”

“...” Venli blinked, then asked, tentatively attuning to Appreciation, “You are the Queen’s research assistant? You work with her, personally?” Rushu nodded. “Ah.” The tapping of her fingertips hitting the desktop increased in speed. This changed things. Rejecting the Queen’s own attendant? That could be a larger insult than Venli was willing to deliver. Even with her distaste for humans, Venli had picked her side, for good this time. “...fine. Close the door behind you.”

I love Dawnshard so much! Rysn's fantasy discord server for paraplegic ladies. Rushu being such a glorious ADHD nerd at all times. The wisdom under the Lopen's goofiness when he talks to Talik and Rysn about their shared experiences of being othered by the Alethi and the able-bodied, respectively. Rysn and Cord both independently having conversations with people where they talked about discovering that they wanted risk and adventure. (👀 please Mr. Sanderson, let them sail around the world together and kiss!!) Rysn crying because Vstim called her a friend. Cord being ready to trick and/or fight any god who comes for Rysn when they've only been friends for like a day. Chiri-Chiri making tiny, adorable roars to protect Rysn. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail, and when your hammer is trade negotiation, you sit down across from a guy who's 300 cremlings in a trench coat and make a sales pitch for not killing you.

Happy Fanfic Friday! This week we celebrate one of the most unique rarepairs I've ever come across - Szeth/Rushu QPR.

Oathbringer spoilers, rated General. This is a series of short fics (600-2000 words) exploring an AU in which Szeth and Rushu start to develop a queerplatonic relationship. Bonus: Rlain and Szeth bonding!

Rushu and Szeth emerged onto one of Urithiru’s balconies. The evening air was cool, but not uncomfortably so. The sun had just set, leaving a fading burst of light and color at the western horizon. The sky overhead was clear, and several stars were visible. Salas was rising in the east - a violet disk against the dark, velvety blue of the sky. Rushu and Szeth sat at one of the several unoccupied tables arranged in the relatively small space. Rushu took the food and drinks she’d packed earlier out of her satchel and set them on the table. She looked up to see Szeth staring at the first moon, seeming thoughtful. “The moons have different names in Shinovar, right?” she asked. “Yes,” he answered. Rushu tapped her fingers on the table, trying to remember what she’d read. “What do you call them again?” “They are the Three Sisters. This,” he gestured toward Salas, “is the First Sister.” “That’s right,” Rushu said. “I remember reading that now. Why do you call them sisters? I haven’t been able to find any reliable sources about that.” Szeth was quiet for a few moments, and Rushu took the opportunity to divide the food between them. She hadn’t known what kinds of food Szeth liked, so she’d just brought the same type of simple meal she’d seen him eat before. She’d brought a bottle of orange wine for them to drink. Szeth took his food with a nod, then began to speak. “The sun and the moons are gods to my people. The sun is the God of Gods, and the Three Sisters are his daughters.” Rushu reached down for a pen and some paper, completely forgetting about her food. “What stories do your people have about the Sisters?”
