I love the perception of time in season 5.

Everything is piled on top of everything else. Amos watching the news of the first hit.

The journey from Ilus end of season 4 takes 18 months but season 5 starts 6 months after Marcos threw the rocks. So, what we saw on the Roci isn’t in a reflected linear timeline.

Like the shift change clock in 5x03.

Time is both too slow and too fast.

The Expanse Season 5 Episode 4

Ever since it began, The Expanse has known how to build action, which isn’t remarkable in itself for a sci-fi show. What makes this series different is that with very little exposition, it can create a sense that, as unsettled as things seem now, they’re about to get a lot messier. That’s a tricky balance to achieve since early episodes must also take the opportunity to create emotional beats before all hell breaks loose, and “Gaugamela” does just that.

The title of the episode refers to a decisive battle in Alexander the Great’s conquest of the Persian Empire in 331 BC. Like the Macedonians, the Belter insurrectionists commanded by Marco are small in number, but their tactics have now decimated huge numbers of their enemy. The asteroids that hit Earth killed millions without a ship firing a single shot, and the devastation will be felt worldwide. The scale of the catastrophe perfectly sets up the audience for a season of mayhem even though the effects have yet to be directly felt.

Amos, for example, is the only one directly in the path of destruction, but we won’t know how he and Clarissa “Peaches” Mao were affected by the Philadelphia impact until next week. Presumably the fact that the Chesapeake prison is underground will have sheltered them from the shockwave, but we’ve undoubtedly witnessed the preamble to a survival tale on Earth’s surface which the audience will be eager to watch unfold.

The motivation for Amos to have visited Clarissa in the first place was simple but powerful. Lydia helped him; now he wants to help her. Similar interactions strengthen the episode in other story arcs, such as the interlude between Bobbie and Alex, which makes it clear that they’re “building a coffin for a dying planet.” This ably illustrates the grieving process for the two patriotic ex-soldiers while also explaining why Marco has his own fleet of Martian cruisers. Never mind that the Mars parliament got hit by an asteroid, too!

Only Avasarala’s point of view on the moon, however, can create the sense of awe needed for such large scale attack. The audience certainly bought into her theory of stealth rocks even if the UN didn’t, but it was still nice to see Nancy Gao grasp the importance of the advice her predecessor gave, providing a small moment of triumph when Earth’s defenses stopped a fourth impact even as the cabinet was wiped out. In fact, this foreshadowing of Avasarala’s return to power further builds action even as we mourn the possible loss of her family planetside.

And speaking of mourning, is this the end of Fred Johnson in The Expanse? The impact of the mutiny on Tycho was felt hard both in the shooting of Fred and in the theft of the protomolecule. Although it’s unclear what Holden will be able to do with his knowledge of the betrayal, it was interesting to note that Monica was filming the whole thing with her eye implant. Again, even if we don’t know where it will lead, the intrigue has been established.

The realization that Marco and the Free Navy are holding all the cards is made all the more shocking by the fact that Naomi is forced to witness it firsthand, inside the belly of the beast. Her attempt to rescue her son Filip has merely resulted in her own entrapment behind enemy lines, providing a view for the audience of the Belter extremist’s actions while forcing us to worry about her well-being. The meshing of narrative necessity with the emotional investment of the main characters is masterfully done.

No surprise, though, right? The Expanse has been doing this kind of thing since season one, taking full advantage of the intricate plot elements it adapts from the equally well written James S. A. Corey novels. The series shows us once again that it’s equal to the task of translating this epic space drama from page to screen, and so far, the opening of one of the book series’ best storylines from Nemesis Games is right on track.

The Untamed Chinoserie Music Album* Track Listing in English

(*As opposed to the instrumental album.)

 *UPDATED* Amazon finally changed their track listing -- they list the song names in pinyin now, though, not English, but I’ve listed that here now for cross-reference purposes.

So, the digital file info for all the tracks in Amazon's digital download for this album is all in Chinese; the Amazon listing doesn't have the song info in English; and the Apple Music listing has English info, but doesn't have the corresponding Chinese info. Therefore, I sat down and cross-referenced the two listings with each other, and with Wikipedia, so that I could know the song names and which actors were singing which tracks; since I did all that work, I figured I might as well share it and maybe help someone else out, right? (Please note: I don’t know Chinese, neither spoken nor written, so I basically just had to rely on logic and do the best I could.)

 When there are singer name discrepancies, I list what Amazon says (after running it through a Chinese character-to-Pinyin converter), and then note if Apple Music or Wikipedia says something different. Also, for the last four songs, Wikipedia didn't correctly match the Amazon track names (nor give the correct running times); for those tracks, I matched the Chinese characters from the track to the Chinese characters in the available Wikipedia titles. I can confirm that the tracks bearing the same numbers on the Apple Music album and the Amazon album are indeed the same songs -- they aren't in a different order from each other.

Note: I'm baffled why songs 6 and 18 have the same name in Chinese characters / pinyin, as they are completely different! I also have no idea how the got translated into English differently.

when you’re a young adult going to a public high school in middlebury, vermont, image is everything. being a part of something is everything, especially when you’re part of a group that everyone knows. these guys have watched each other grow up, from birthday parties at the local mcdonalds’ jungle gym to middle school dances to house parties and keg stands when someone’s parents were away. through the best - like senior year, when the football team won the state championship - and the worst of high school, these guys were always there for each other. somehow, though, graduation proved to be too trying for them to stick it out. some have gone their own way, and some have stayed in middlebury to create homes and families. either way - no matter how hard they try to forget, the friends they made and kept for twelve years of their life are hard to cut ties with. somehow, by some stroke of luck (or misfortune) they’re all in town to attend elijah and valentina’s wedding. y i k e s.

The Expanse s4e3 Subduction - rewatch

The episode of parallels. Bobbie threatening Esai and Amos threatening Murtry. Avasarala finding dirt on Nancy Gao and Murtry having a wiretap on Belters. Holden coming too fast to the monument and Lucia coming too fast at the crash site.

“How did you get there so fast?” “Uhh, because we’re celebrities?” LOL Holden, what a response.

Elvi is interesting, she’s so curious and relentless. Even that Belter’s murder couldn’t convince her to leave the planet. For the Science! And I like that we finally have a good scientist character on the show. (And Fayez too, but he’s running support from the orbit). I liked when she opposed destroying the drill, but I can see why Holden made that call. The risk was too great.

Once again, the planet prevents a fight from breaking out in the camp. This time with lightning.

Holden can’t trust Miller anymore and with a good reason. It became clear Miller is doing incomprehensible things without any regard for human lives on the planet.

Amos. Amos keeping an eye on Murtry. Amos taking the supplies. Amos just being his weird self. It was so funny when Wei gave him a speech about how she’d have to shoot him if he does something like that again and he’s like “So we’re not fucking?” and she’s like “WTF”? He is flabbergasting to people who don’t know him. I like how he pegged Murtry correctly. He is “that man”. Killer that likes killing, that finds excuses to make it right for him to kill. But yeah, Amos is different. For him killing doesn’t mean anything, it’s just another solution to problems. He has Holden to tell him when it’s okay to kill.

In the beginning Scotty asks Murtry “Are you gonna kill us all?”. In the end, Murtry and his men shoot Belter conspirators and Scotty. “That answers your question.” And Lucia is next on his list.

There’s a kid at Lucia’s with eye problem, but there’s no power so she can’t check it properly. The blindness is coming! I didn’t catch that foreshadowing on the first watch.

Naomi meets Lucia and her family and we learn about the conflict between Lucia and Felcia. Felcia wants to go to university, Lucia wants to keep her family together and make home on Ilus, which is understandable after what happened on Ganymede. It’s clear Lucia is in charge of this family and Naomi was put in the middle of mother-daughter argument there which was awkward for her.

Naomi was pushing herself so hard, helping with repairs and bringing spare parts from Roci, while she was suffering because of gravity sickness. She just wants to help her people so much, it’s so admirable. I loved when she went off on Murtry, defending Lucia and Belters. This is so Naomi. And then she collapsed from all that strain and stress. Good thing Lucia was there to help.

Murtry has balls to come to Lucia for help with his leg and threaten her. Especially after he specifically order his men not to help Belters and not to share their supplies.

Mention of the plan to sell ore. Barbapiccola has to survive, this ship is the only chance for Belters to live and prosper on Ilus.

Arjun becomes part of the campaign and they have fluffy moments (definitely there was a makeout in the elevator :). Avasarala’s wearing that empress outfit as she accepts Nancy’s resignation. It’s interesting to note that she becomes so bent on winning the campaign because someone dared question her wisdom and rule. Avasarala HAS to prove she’s right, that’s why she goes up in arms about it. Also, her belief that Nancy would be an easy enemy to defeat, because she’s in the open, is quite arrogant. Typical.

Bobbie’s nephew is kidnapped by drug dealers and they blackmail her to help them steal military equipment. It’s tightbeam modules and it’s for Belters! Suspicious.

Martin Esai - the Martian Heisenberg? He’s bald, he’s doing it to get rich “for family”, he has a kid cooking drugs for him... it checks out.

Bobbie going to police and finding out that Esai is a cop was such a good twist. Love that she still had the guts to threaten him :)

Bobbie is a good Martian but she has bad rep and no one would believe her. Esai is a bad Martian, because he;s selling stolen Martian tech on black market, but he’s a cop with impeccable record. Unfair, isn’t it?

Ok, so Mars has these public areas with holographic puzzles and kids come there to solve them... is it for fun? Is it for school?

Oh, the irony of ads about joining Martian marines... must be outdated. Marines are all out of jobs!
