Each day was different even if most of your routines went uninterrupted. That was life. That was your day in Space Patrol Delta.

Activity had cooled down long enough for you to feel safe enough to leave the shared living areas. Time for yourself was essential. Healthy.

Any moment an alarm could go off. So you needed to snatch any control of your environment while you still could.

Headphones on with your choice of music, you lounged atop your bed. Just you, a puzzle game on your phone, music, and Bridge Carson reading a comic.

You couldn't quite remember your exact words to him earlier, but it was a good enough invitation.

There didn't need to be any small talk. You two were fully content to each do your own thing and share the same space. It was lovely.

Bridge didn't complain when you made a noise at the game or try speaking to you when you obviously wouldn't understand him. He did give a thumbs up every so often. In return, you did too. An acknowledgement that the other was so okay.

You were more than grateful for that. His understanding of how you needed to be thrilled you honestly.

You'd make him buttery toast for the rest of your life or take down a wave of krybots for him at that point.

No matter how your day went at least Bridge could be there. Headstands, smiles, toast, and all.

"Bridge."

He turned his head.

"You're my favorite."

Sorry to be posting about Power Rangers at 3am but I can’t stop thinking about how weird they are for western mainstream superheroes because like... technically speaking there is no one single “Power Rangers” in the same way that there’s an “Avengers” or “Justice League.” Those teams will rotate their members but (Ship of Theseus aside) are always basically the same organization. Meanwhile every iteration of Power Rangers is an entirely new group of random people who get chosen to fight a specific threat– being a Ranger is treated as stepping into a “legacy of power” rather than joining an institution.

People know what a Power Ranger is, not who they are.

In a way they’re an example of the “king asleep in mountain” trope; legendary heroes who arise in times of crisis to save their people. Power Rangers really only show up when there’s a villain to fight, and most seasons end with them sacrificing their powers so it’s not like they’re hanging around afterwards. A lot of them are actually only Rangers for like a few months, tops.

(Some seasons even go so far as to imply that there’s actually only supposed to be one Ranger of any color operating at any time, which is why none of the teams ever overlap with each other outside of rare crossovers, but the lore on this is held together by string cheese and old gum.)

On that topic, I always wonder what civilians think about the Power Rangers because from an outside perspective these teams just appear, fight a bunch of monsters, and then they suddenly disappear until next year when another group pops up.

Like obviously they’re viewed as protectors and the public supports them but in a way wouldn’t they also be treated as a bad omen? If you see a Power Ranger you’re actually kinda fucked because it means that a bunch of bullshit is about to happen. It becomes “Ranger Season” and insurance rates go up.

Do they make meaningful distinctions between the different teams? Imagine sitting there watching the Mystic Force Rangers getting their asses handed to them and thinking “wow I really miss when they were ninjas, those were the days.” Is there in-universe merchandising, and if so, who controls the rights? And you just KNOW twitter is gonna be flooded with Ranger fancams... like the Ranger twitter stan wars must be something else entirely.

The series itself doesn’t really take the time to dig into the minutiae of any of this but I think it’s very interesting.

What was the process like for designing the ActiRangers, their civilian and suited forms? Their suits look so cool, it’s definitely clear you have a lot of familiarity with the genre while also having great ideas on how to innovate and add your own unique elements! Did they go through lots of conceptual iterations, or did they come pretty naturally? Any particular teams that inspired you, like SPD or RPM with their numbered members?

So the Actirangers started out as characters designed for a private little Tokusatsu OC jam I did with some friends! The design I submitted was Pink, (hence why she's kinda the main character of the story)

So Pink's suit was the first one designed, hence how she's kinda the most basic of the Rangers. I had just got done watching Birdie Wing and Love After World Domination and thought it would be kinda fun for a golf themed sentai hero.

She was originally going to be ActiRanger 5 before I thought of the "Four/Fore" golf pun.

The rest of the team was then designed from there with each of their sports in mind and some general vibes.

I don't think they went through all that much iteration, though I will say since I tend to draw them in Black and White I sometimes mix up which parts of their suits are their color and which parts are black.

I wanted to give them each some kind of Power Weapon so I stuck to stick sports and also Table Tennis. (I am still weirdly fond of the old Penny Arcade Paint the Line comics)

As far as Power Ranger teams that inspired them, Mighty Morphin' is obviously the biggest inspo. (The Dan Mora run on the Go Go Power Rangers comics is awesome.) Time Force, S.P.D. and RPM were all on my mind as well.

For the Gambit Gang I was struggling to come up with a fun villain theme and eventually figureod out that the enemy to the "Sports" team had to be the "Chess Club". (Insert joke about polycules and board games)

Gray in particular was conceived at this point when I and wanted an Evil Ranger on their side. Chess Knights having a vague horse theme, he obviously had to be Polo! His design draws pretty heavily from Mystic Force's Koragg which is still IMO one of the sickest designs Sentai has ever cooked.

Wow that got a little more long winded than I inteded but I hope y'all enjoyed this little peek behind the curtain of the ActiRanger's development!
