this is also why i enjoy crackshipping gwydion with pryderi because it's somehow the only possible relationship in this story that would hypothetically have the potential not to be irredeemably fucked up which is saying something considering that in canon gwydion kills him

anyway i was thinking about gwydion and trying to work out a) how old he is and b) if this man has ever had a healthy relationship (of any sort, to be honest, but also, for real, is he aware of the concept of safe sane and consensual)

i don't think he and gil can be super young because they are obviously considered adult and mature enough to undertake circuits on math's behalf. but that doesn't mean they're actually very old. they could be like 21 for all we know and i feel like this might explain a lot

(this also made me wonder about the age gap. as far as i know they're not twins. do we know who is older? i think they must be close in age, but how close? were they sometimes mistaken for twins or are they completely unlike each other?)

and if he's in his early 20s and unmarried and inseparable from his brother and doing circuits for his uncle and occupied being a fucked up little bastard magician then i don't think there's going to have been a lot of time for him to grow up as an independent person. so i don't get the impression he really has any friends, and i don't think he's ever been in love either, and that's fine, obviously, except given... everything... i feel like it hits harder if there is nothing Not-Fucked-Up to counterbalance it. like has this man ever had consensual sex in his own body or is his only experience of it fucked up incestuous animal mating because that's worse somehow!! i do think that's worse!!

and therefore i feel like there's a strong chance that gwydion in the second half of the story (ie parent!gwydion) is like. 30. given how fast lleu ages. and has never been in a relationship. and has the flimsiest grasp of consent in the world. and is actually quite fucked up in general without anything to counteract it

which. makes you feel for lleu, really. he didn't have a lot of great role models! it's amazing he's not a worse person!
