Countering the dominant symbol of hijab as oppression are contemporary practices that celebrate Muslim identity and as women. In the mid-1970s, some Muslim women in Egypt began a movement called the ‘Sahwah’ (awakening) that sparked a period of heightened religiosity that began to be reflected in the hijab as a dress code, to both publicly announce their religious beliefs as well as a way to simultaneously reject Western influences of dress and culture. Many Muslim women also viewed the hijab garment as a positive resource, as a way to avoid harassment and unwanted sexual advances in public and to instead allow them to enjoy equal rights of complete legal, economic, and political status. Thus, the hijab is a fluid symbol that functions simultaneously as a symbol of oppression and of pride and respect, the right to freedom of expression and the right to practise one’s religion, albeit devoid of the usual stereotypes surrounding the practice of Islamic faith.

But this world wasn’t a drama, and the "real Empress" seemed to have been just a quiet and gentle person. From the Empress’s perspective, Gongrin might have been annoying...
...but it didn’t seem like she wielded power to oppress Gongrin. This was probably fortunate for Gongrin.

Muslim Brotherhood antisemitism may have influenced ISIS in Iraq
In 2014, Islamic state (ISIS) rampaged across northern Iraq, setting fire to Shi’a mosques and persecuting Yazidis and Christians. Its ideology was commonly attributed to  Salafism exported from Saudi Arabia. However, a doctoral thesis published in 2022 at Uppsala University in Sweden takes a different approach to  the question of Islamist violence. The author, Evin Ismail, an Iraqi Shi’a, considers that genocidal antisemitism inspired by the Muslim Brotherhood’s ideologue, Egyptian-born Sayyid Qutb, is at the core of ISIS philosophy and transferred itself from Jews to Iraqi Shi’a Muslims. Qutb’s brother Muhammad, a professor in Saudi Arabia, disseminated Sayyid’s anti-Jewish writings, while the Syrian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, taking refuge in the country after the Hama massacre of 1982, also imported its virulent antisemitism into Saudi Arabia.

Muslim Brotherhood Sayyid Qutb was responsible for its ideology of antisemitic violence. Qutb was jailed by Nasser and executed.
The rise of the Islamic State, and its antisemitic ideology, has led to violence against Jews in Europe and a genocide of Shia Muslims in Iraq. This thesis investigates the causes and origins of Islamist antisemitic violence from a social identity perspective. It is the first systematic study of Islamist antisemitism and anti-Shiism that accounts for its trajectory from its inception in the 1930s until 2018. The material consists of primary sources of Islamist literature. First, it studies antisemitic perpetrators of Islamist attacks in Europe. Second, it analyses antisemitism in Islamic State propaganda. Third, it studies Sayyid Qutb’s antisemitism. Lastly, it studies the antiShiite legacy of the Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated Sahwa movement.
The study does not situate the problem of Islamist violence within the religion itself or the Sunni or Shia branch of Islam but rather within how political actors use religion for political purposes. This thesis challenges the conventional view of the Islamic State’s violence as originating from the theological interpretations of Salafism and argues that rather, it originates from the political ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Furthermore, it centers antisemitism and its interconnected anti-Shiism at the core of Islamist ideology and use of violence. The findings demonstrate that mainly two concepts are central to Islamist antisemitic violence: the war against Islam conspiracy and the imaginary victimized ummah. Additionally, it shows that antisemitism and anti-Shiism are interconnected since the Sahwa movement and ISIS transferred antisemitic notions onto Shiites.
The study also shows that the war against Islam conspiracy is the main feature of ISIS antisemitism and that it was developed by Sayyid Qutb, who inspired the Sahwa movement. It also demonstrates that the Sahwa movement inspired ISIS in their politicized genocidal antiShiism.
The findings can be divided into seven categories: 1) the war against Islam conspiracy; 2) a politicization of religious identities; 3) Muslim identity as either victimized or martial; 4) the imaginary victimized ummah; 5) violence in defense of the imaginary victimized ummah; 6) a transfer of antisemitic notions onto Shiites; and 7) antisemitic Islamist excommunication of Muslims. This thesis argues that antisemitic and anti-Shiite violence is the result of the politicization of religious identities within a war narrative. In addition, this thesis demonstrates how the Muslim Brotherhood combined Nazi antisemitism with politicized interpretations of Islamic scripture, inspiring the Islamic State’s Islamist antisemitism and violence.

Regimes that Radicalise
‘We realised we were a nation (ummah) that had a distinguished place among nations. Otherwise, what would make me leave Saudi Arabia - and I am of Yemeni origin - to go and fight in Bosnia.’                    - Nasir al-Bahn
Okay, so there’s a lot to say on this subject and it has too many facets for me to dissect in one post, but I will highlight one factor that contributed to the radicalisation of Saudi men in the mid 1990s. From the late 1970s to just prior to 1990, during the period of the Soviet-Afghan war, there was great importance placed on the need for jihad. It is important at this point to draw a distinction between what is known as classical jihad and global jihad. Let’s use the following definitions: Classical jihad: those invading or oppressing Muslims are fought against (e.g. when Afghanistan was being invaded, the Afghans fighting back would be classical jihadis). Global jihad: calling for Muslims to take up arms and fight on behalf of other Muslims (or the ummah) anywhere in the world (e.g. when Afghanistan was being invaded, the Saudis and the Egyptians, the Yemenis etc. would all be global jihadis, as they are not the ones facing opposition directly). Throughout the 70s and 80s, pan-Islamic or global jihadi rhetoric was becoming popular. Speakers/writers such as Abdullah Yusuf Azza were becoming popular among the Saudi population, for a number of reasons, including terrorist attacks in Saudi Arabia itself, dissatisfaction with the regime allowing US presence in the peninsula, as well as feelings of sympathy for their Muslim brothers and sisters in Afghanistan, among many other factors.
There was a lot of aid provided to those who wished to fight in Afghanistan, for instance wealthy benefactors such as bin Laden himself were providing financial assistance to the cause, buying plane tickets as well as living expenses for those who wished to fight. At this point, this was not seen as a jihad in itself, not in the way that we define jihad now, but simply as going to war against an aggressor. Bin Laden would donate his annual allowance of $300,000 as well as other supplies from his family’s construction company. Other wealthy Saudis would provide the same. Flights from some airlines were also made significantly cheaper, as much as 75%, for those going to Afghanistan, in order to make it more accessible. With all of these things put in place, as well as general rhetoric from the regime condemning what was happening in Afghanistan, made the first jihadis (which I guess they were) feel a sense of purpose and that they were on the right side of history. They were the heroes in this situation, doing what was right. When they returned from fighting, they were hailed as heroes (and this kind of hero worship would also influence other younger generations to seek the same kind of acceptance by going to battle later on). This was the case not just for those fighting in Afghanistan but in Bosnia also in 1992.

The Sahwa movement is an extremist Saudi jihadi group that is known for openly critiquing the Saudi regime. Throughout 1992 and 1993, they were critical and pushing for revolution more than the regime was willing to withstand, and so a crackdown began on the sahwists. The top members (just over one hundred men) would be arrested, put in prison for long periods of time and interrogated. These arrests would set in place a series of significant events. Among those arrested were the brother and father of a man called al-Hudayf.
Al-Hudayf was radicalised in the US in the 1980s where he was a student. returning to Saudi Arabia, on the 11th of November 1994, he threw acid in the face of a policeman - this policeman was an interrogator at the Ha’ir prison where his family members were being kept. For his crime al-Hudayf was executed. News of his death was met with outrage, particularly by his terrorist network, who believed he had been ill treated and tortured prior to the execution as no body was returned to the family. For his network, there was no turning back now.
Two months after al-Hudayf’s execution, a 100kg car bomb was detonated outside a building used by the Vinnell Corporation, a US military contractor involved in the training of the Saudi National Guard. Five Americans and two Indians were killed in this tragedy, as well as another sixty injured. This act was carried out by four of al-Hudayf’s network. This took, both, the Saudi and the US by surprise, as it was the first large scale bombing in the kingdom’s history. A year later in June 1996, a bomb attack in Khobar ripped through US air force barracks killing 19, and wounding a further 400. The Khobar attack would indirectly affect the jihadist community through the treatment received by the Saudi regime.
The answer from the regime was yet another crackdown, this time on those that had travelled to Afghanistan and Bosnia - those who had just a few years prior been praised as heroes. Around 200 arrests were made following the Vinnell bombing (with thirty being members of the Libyan Islamic Fighting group) Another 2000 were arrested after the Khobar bombing in an attempt to find the perpetrator (this included al-Uyayri, one of the leaders of al-Qaeda) A further 800 arrested in Feb and March of 1998 after the discovery of the ‘missile plot’ against the US consulate in Jidda and finally a further 300 after a second missile plot was foiled. All of these ex-veterans (I guess that is what they were at the time) were held without trial, some of them held for years, and were tortured severely. ‘The 1996 and 1998 crackdowns traumatised a generation of jihadists and contributed strongly to the radicalisation of the Saudi jihadist movement.’                    - Thomas Hegghammer
They could not understand how at one moment in time they were praised as the heroes, and in the next being tortured as the enemy. Many were tortured into ‘confessing’ that the regime and the King were ‘infidels’. The very nature of the treatment faced by the jihadis who were teetering on the edge of radicalisation served to push them in one direction, and one direction only. Over the next few years as they were released in trickles, we would see an increase in their radical behaviour and this time the target has changed to the regime, rather than the US.

If you’re interested in other factors, there are many I can write on in the future. My PhD research seems to have led me down this course of research at the moment, which I did not expect.
