Marinette’s Luckiest Charm 10: Knit
So much for WIPril. Oh well 🥲
Read on AO3 here!
While Kagami was putting on a brave face after Adrien left, Marinette hadn't been so sure that Kagami was really as calm as she pretended to be. "Hey Kagami, Luka, maybe we can go to the arcade after this? It's not time to go home yet, right?" Marinette smiled, hoping the suggestion didn't come across as awkwardly as she thought it sounded in her head.
"Sounds good to me," Luka said affably. Thank goodness he was willing to roll with it. Marinette didn't doubt that Luka understood the intention behind Marinette's request.
"I… might enjoy that," Kagami said shyly, a small smile touching her lips. "Thank you. I would have left with Adrien in an hour but… I have more time than that if I request it. I'd like to spend more time with the both of you."
They finished off their floats and took a subway to the arcade, talking about the experience at the archery range. Kagami explained more about archery forms and her past competitions and how she prepared for them, with Luka listening in and absorbing all she said and asking clarifying questions. Marinette wasn't able to keep much of an interest but it was great to see Luka and Kagami interacting like friends as Marinette had always hoped they'd do.
They spent about 2 hours at the arcade before Kagami got a notification that her mother wanted her back home. Marinette and Luka said goodbye as Kagami stepped into Tatsue, and then rode the subway back to the bakery.
"I think Kagami will be fine," Luka said. "I sorta got the sense she was prepared for this."
Marinette sighed. "Yeah, I guess. It probably still sucks for her though."
"It probably does. But if you both want we can keep hanging out and spend more time together. Well," Luka then shrugged sheepishly. "I guess you can do that without me."
"No, it was great to see you two talking with each other. I want you two to be friends!" Marinette beamed up at him. "Thanks for hanging out."
"It's what I'm here for."
"To hang out?"
"To hang out with you," Luka smiled. "But I've taken up enough of your time. I'll head out. See you tomorrow." He leaned over and kissed her.
Marinette waved him off as he went back down to the subway. Marinette's parents welcomed her back and the family ate their dinner together. Marinette finally got back to her room and… something felt off. Her first instinct was to look for the Miracle Box, but it was hidden away under her sewing supplies, only… Only she had recently pulled out the Bee, hadn't she? She was wondering if she needed to find a new bearer for the Bee and had no idea who to give it to. She'd been toying with the idea of handing it off to Juleka before the date, but she had to set it aside to leave on time. Where had she left it?
Had she taken it out?
There was a thunk on her balcony roof. Hmm, she had actually expected him but it still gave her a little trepidation that he'd arrived now. She'd have to search for the Bee later, if she'd even taken it out at all, she must have just misplaced it somewhere like she did everything else! Marinette climbed up her ladder and opened the hatch to the balcony.
Chat Noir was perched on her railing. She hadn't expected him as Chat. "Ch-Chat Noir?"
"Hey." Chat said that so softly Marinette almost didn't hear.
She made her way out onto the balcony proper and leaned on her railing next to him. "Are you alright?" Chat didn't answer except for a shrug. "Kagami said it felt like you two broke up."
He turned to face her, looking surprised. "What do you mean?"
"The way you left today. She said it was the end for you two."
Chat laughed a little bitterly. "Yeah. I guess. And now you know who I am."
"Chat Noir would never give up his Miraculous to someone he didn't trust. And you didn't hand it to me. Kagami wouldn't give up Longg to anyone she didn't trust. It had to be you, Adrien."
"Surprise." He sighed. "I wish I told you earlier."
"You tried, remember?"
"Ugh, sorry. Not that way. In a nicer way," Chat sighed.
"It's… alright. What did you want to talk about, Chat?" Marinette tried to keep the question neutral but she was thinking he'd start talking about Kagami.
"I found my mother."
Marinette reeled back in shock. "Oh, oh my gosh, that's so…" Good? Exciting? Why did it sound like Chat was mourning? Was it bad news?
"My father is keeping her in some… life support thing. In a secret basement. A secret basement I didn't know we had!" Chat growled. "I thought she disappeared and she's been right under our noses, literally, for the past year and a half? How crazy is that? And why? Why would he do this?" Chat Noir slammed a fist against his thigh. "I hate this. I hate all of this. I can't believe he'd lie to me, I can't believe he'd just let me think that my mother was dead. I can't believe he and Nathalie are… some kind of together. I can't believe he put Mom in some suspended animation tube capsule thing in a garden underneath our house!" Chat let out a breath. "I needed Plagg back. I needed something to make sense. So yeah, I think Kagami and I are done. Or whatever. But I can't handle anything right now."
"I'm… so sorry," Marinette said softly. "What can we do?"
"I was gonna ask you that. I don't know, I really don't know. Somehow maybe I find myself wondering if my father is Hawkmoth after all? This seems like such a supervillain set up, you know?"
"But he'd been akumatized before? As the Collector?"
"Yeah, I guess." Chat hung his head in exhaustion. "I don't know anything anymore, Milady."
"Well, no matter what happens, if Gabriel is Hawkmoth or not, we'll find a way to set things right together. We'll figure out how to save your mom. I promise," Marinette said as gently as she could, placing a hand on his shoulder and squeezing. He turned toward her to put his head on her shoulder.
Except that wasn't what he did.
He had leaned in to kiss her.
Their lips had barely brushed before she shoved him and leapt away yelling out a "NO!"
"Sorry! I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I don't--I didn't…" Chat stuttered, clinging to the railing to prevent falling out onto the street after he lost his balance.
Marinette covered her mouth with both hands but gasped out a "Wh-why?"
"I…! I…" Chat gulped and stared down at his hands. He let out a breath and his entire body sagged, drooping down to hang his arms and chin over the railing. "You were the first girl I fell in love with. I saw you being so brave and courageous when you told Hawkmoth that you'd protect Paris. I thought 'there's a girl who has a plan and knows what to do and she isn't afraid of doing the right thing.' Whoever you were behind the mask, that's who I wanted to be with." He lifted his head slightly to look at her. "I still do."
Marinette looked at Chat for a long moment before shaking her head. "I can't do this." She turned around to open her hatch and go back down into her room.
"Wait!" Chat leapt over the railing and grabbed her arm before she dropped down. "Please, wait."
"Chat. Don't touch me."
"Wh… what?"
"I said don't touch me!" Marinette yelled, wrenching her arm from his grip. She crossed her arms over her chest, hugging herself tight. She looked around, anywhere but at Chat, and after a few tense moments she sighed. "What is it, Adrien?" She still wasn't looking at him.
"I'm… just scared. I really am sorry, please you have to believe me. I know this sounds like an excuse but it's the truth. You just… seem to have it together and… I really wanted to… have that too."
In that instant Marinette heard Luka's voice in her head: "Cool story. Still wrong." She laughed softly to herself, tinged with a little bit of bitterness of her own.
Oh no. Luka.
She had to tell him.
"I… know this is going to sound bad, but. I don't know where else to go, Marinette. You're the only one I trust."
Marinette looked up at Chat Noir, her forehead wrinkled with lines of worry and questioning. She searched his eyes and knew he was miserable. She took in a deep breath and let it out. "Okay. You wanna stay here for tonight?"
Not trusting himself to say anything, Chat nodded.
"Okay. Let's go back inside." Marinette silently prayed that she was doing the right thing. She dropped down to her bed, leaving her balcony hatch open so Chat Noir would follow. Marinette went down to her desk and… and there was something that she'd been doing before… looking for…
Well, whatever.
She needed to call Luka anyway. Marinette pulled out her phone and her last screen had been sending a text to Sabrina that it was alright to go in and pick up the group project. Oh, that must have been it, duh.
"Hey, Marinette?"
She flicked her eyes up at Chat Noir only for an instant. She looked back down at her phone and… she didn't feel like she wanted to call right now, so she pulled up Luka's texts and started typing. "Yeah?"
Chat took in a breath and started saying something but bit it back. "Thanks." She heard him sit down on her bed. "Claws in," he said quietly.
Good, it sounded like he was going to stay up on her bed. That was fine, she was hoping to get some more homework done at her desk anyway.
"Are you going to tell Luka?" Adrien asked.
"Yeah, I am."
"You… don't have to. It won't happen again. We can keep it between us."
Luka's voice was in her head again. "You can tell me everything, or nothing if you prefer." She nodded to herself. "I'm not telling him because I have to, Adrien. I'm telling him because I want to. He's important to me."
Adrien was silent for a few heartbeats. "Alright," he said, sounding defeated.
M: Chat Noir is here, he's
M: not doing okay
After a few moments she saw that he was typing back.
M: he tried to kiss me
L: Oh? Is he
L: What???
She was in the middle of typing out "it's okay, I stopped him" when she saw another message pop in.
L: I trust you
L: Hope you're okay
She felt tears falling from the corners of her eyes. Marinette was surprised by that. Maybe she wasn't okay after all.
HAH take that canon

warnings: a little bit of angst, minor sexual tension, fluff
rating: PG-14
masterlist
Tumblr media
You can’t stop running. You lost Din a while back, somewhere amongst the huts that lined the small city. When you’d both heard the blaster shots of the paired-up bounty hunters, Din had told you to run—and you’d done just that. You hadn’t realized that he wasn’t around you anymore until you’d weaved through the huts and into the crowds of the city.
Yet, you don’t stop doing what Din had told you to do. Your feet practically fly over the ground, diving around people and leaping over random obstacles. You’re not even sure if you’re still being pursued, but you can’t risk it—not until you get back to the Razor Crest, which is still on the other side of the small city’s walls. The child’s currently alone there, and if neither one of you make it back quickly enough, he could get snatched up.
“Watch it!” someone exclaims after you brush their shoulder with additional force. You’re typically the kind of person to stop and apologize extensively, maybe even offering them something in return for your harmful actions, but you can’t be that person right now. You now feel almost more panicked for Din’s safety than your own, and you just hope he’s been able to beat you to the Crest.
Suddenly, you hear another blaster shot from behind you. A few of the city folk shout out in terror, and you look over your shoulder to see both of the hunters hot on your trail. Your gaze snaps back to the ground ahead of you, and your chest heaves both in effort and in panic. Great, you think to yourself. They’ve probably already managed to get rid of Din, and now I have to run from both of them.
The thought of Din possibly already being dead at their hands is enough to get you to collapse on the spot in utter grief, but remembering the promise you’d both made to each other to save the child no matter what, you keep going. You can’t imagine how afraid the poor thing is, probably already having woken up from its nap to realize that it’s locked in the ship with neither one of its protectors around it.
Knowing you need to at least try to throw your pursuers off your track, you rapidly turn a corner, heading down a side street. You then turn back onto a main road, hoping it’s put you at least a block away from the hunters. Your head whips around to see if it’s worked, but in the process of distracting yourself, you soon find yourself getting completely torn off your trail altogether.
A firm grip seizes your arm and pulls you into an alleyway you didn’t even notice. Before you can get the gasp out, a gloved hand covers your mouth, suppressing any sounds you can think of making. You expect your body to hit the hard wall of a building or the ground, but instead, it hits cold metal—beskar.
“Stay still,” Din’s modulated voice murmurs into your ear, and you practically feel frozen as you stand there. You’re suddenly well aware of how one of his arms still has yours in his grip, and the other continues to cover your mouth. Your back is against his front with not a lot of room to spare, if any at all. His grips on your body force you against him, both of your chests rising and falling from the previous chase—and you wouldn’t be surprised if the sudden tension of your close proximity also made your chests heave just a bit more than usual.
You close your eyes as you hear the footsteps of your pursuers approaching. You tense up when they get closer, and Din gives your arm an extra squeeze in response. Your eyes fly open again at his unexpected gesture of comfort. You and Din are close, yes, but you’ve had yet to see or feel him actually show any signs of possible affection—which is something you’ve been waiting for. You want to believe it’s more, but you convince yourself it’s just the adrenaline of the situation.
By the time you pull yourself out of your thoughts, you realize that the footsteps have now gone past your current position. As soon as the sound of them fades completely, Din releases you, but doesn’t give you any time to go anywhere. He spins you around and grips your shoulders, keeping you at the same proximity—but now facing you directly.
“Are you alright?” Din asks you, and you can’t help noticing the edge of concern in his modulated tone. His helmet jerks in a few small directions, as if he’s observing you for any injuries.
Your heart softens, but you remind yourself that it’s all a part of the companionship and nothing more. You give him a nod. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
Din nods at you. “Then let’s get to the Crest.”
You nod yet again to agree, but neither of you move for a moment as your chests continue to practically touch. You’re looking up at him, entranced by the imagination of what his eyes must look like underneath that visor, staring down at you and absorbing your close presence. You wonder if he’s also feeling the sudden electric charge in the air, feeling reminiscent of a storm’s humidity on a jungle planet. You just hope he’s feeling all the same things as you.
And then you realize that the reason he hasn’t moved yet is because you have to move first.
You clear your throat, stepping away to let Din lead the way out. He separates from you slowly, only quickening his pace once the distance reaches a point where that tension between you both finally snaps. Although you don’t feel the charge anymore, you still remember its effect—and you can’t stop thinking about it. Is it all in my head? Your mind is fighting with itself. It must be. I know who I’m talking about here.
For the many months you’ve been working with Din to protect the child, you’ve been able to observe his hesitance to be vulnerable in any way—and affection was a huge one. Even with the child, he only comes out of his beskar-cladded shell inch by inch, never revealing too much. You were shocked the one time you got him to talk about his past. That’d been after a dangerous job, one that almost took away both your lives. That night, you’d spilled a lot to each other—but not everything you’d wanted to.
Your thoughts distract you throughout the trek back to the Crest, during which you neither see any of the hunters again nor pick up the resources you came to buy in the first place. When Din closes the hatch and heads for the ladder up to the cockpit, he stops, turning around to see you following him.
“I want you to rest,” Din says softly. “That chase was… grueling. I’ll get us to another planet for resources.”
“Din—” you try to insist that you’re fine.
“Please,” Din begs you. You decide to give in as soon as you hear the desperate tone in his modulated voice. “If not for you… then for me, and my piece of mind.”
You give him a nod, patting his shoulder. “Alright, Din. But you better not be far behind me.”
Din nods, his attention only drawing away from you at the sight of the child waddling out from where he’d escaped his hiding place. Din bends down to pick him up. “I’ll keep him with me,” Din assures you. He then climbs up the ladder, leaving you to do just as he requested.
You lay down on the cot you and Din take shifts sleeping on, but sleep won’t come easily to you. Your mind is still buzzing with thoughts of what happened before, and your stomach is a fireworks show at the possibilities of what Din’s actions and words could have meant. You’re sure you’re just overthinking, but you let yourself wallow in the feeling, nevertheless. No matter how long you lay there with your eyes closed, your body refuses to sleep—and suddenly hearing Din’s modulated voice floating down from the cockpit doesn’t help, either.
Who’s he talking to? Your curiosity grows, and you find yourself rising from the cot to start heading for the cockpit. As soon as you reach the ladder, though, you freeze, taking a minute to actually listen to what he’s saying.
“I just… I need to tell someone, kid.”
Your heart softens immensely when you realize what’s happening. He’s talking to the child.
Upon earning a coo, Din chuckles and then continues. “I don’t know how to tell her.” Your eyes widen when you hear him refer to you. “I’m not good at this stuff.” He pauses, and you find yourself easing onto the ground in a crisscross position as you continue to eavesdrop. “What would you say?”
The child coos. Din laughs slightly at himself. Your heart soars at the sound of it.
“Right. You can’t say much, yet.” There’s a pause. “I was really worried about her, kid. I thought I lost her. It reminded me of… all this.”
You hear him sigh, and your heart pounds in your chest as you wait for him to speak again.
“I just don’t want to mess this up. I have no idea how to tell her I love her without messing something up.”
Your heart nearly stops on the spot.
“Love her?” Love me? Din loves me?
You can’t believe what you’ve heard. You’re in such shock that you almost miss what comes next.
“I don’t know why I’m asking you, kid. It’s hefty advice. Maybe I should just keep it to myself.”
You shake your head, needing to do something about this. You leap to your feet, ascending the ladder into the cockpit with urgency. Din instantly turns in the pilot’s chair, the blue flashes of hyperspace reflecting off his beskar. You remain in place for a moment, simply staring at the man who loves you—and who you love in return.
“Hey, you okay?” Din asks, rising from the chair. “I thought that you were—.”
Din’s cut off by you, as you can’t hold back any longer. You walk up quickly to meet him, reaching your hands up to grip the sides of his helmet as you pull his forehead down to meet yours. You close your eyes as you absorb the intimate touch, relishing in what you’ve heard is a typical Mandalorian kiss. You can tell Din’s shocked by your action, but after a few moments, his gloved hands also come up to meet the sides of your face. At that, you reopen your eyes, swearing that you can see at least the outline of the eyes that lie behind his visor.
“I’m… going to assume that you overheard my conversation with the kid.” Din’s voice is soft, yet you still catch its hint of amusement.
You chuckle, running a thumb over the metal of his helmet. “I did.” You pause, looking at him more seriously. “And I love you, too.”
You can tell Din’s not sure of what to say or do, but after a few moments of you both standing like that, he begins to draw you in closer. You finish the action for him, letting your head rest against his chest as your arms wrap around him. He eventually figures out how to comfortably get his arms around you, too, and you close your eyes as you simply stand there and absorb the affection you’ve both been craving for much too long now.
You only reopen your eyes when you feel something touch your leg. You and Din both look down to see the child standing at your feet, his little arms trying to hug both yours and Din’s leg. You both chuckle, and your heart practically explodes at the sight. You look back up at Din, seeing his helmet looking at you as well—and the word “family” instantly comes to mind for the both of you.

This way and that way, if I do something that's not up to his standards....
I lose control over my own body.
___________________________
"(y/n)?" a soft voice called. "(y/n)? You up here?"
the latter quietly shifted and peaked down the attic hatch with a smile, only for it to be wiped away quickly when spotting the newcomer of the family. the girl has no problems with the newcomer, but sometimes she can sense the cold glint in her eyes whenever their gaze locked with one another.
but as quickly as her smile disappeared, it came back as she gestured for them to come up. (y/n) moved the the right of the window, the eldest situated herself beside the window, and then the new sister settled on a box to the left.
"peaceful night, ne?"
"mm"
There was a comforting silent filling the air that they all basked in with small content smiles on their lips as they stared off into their own space until the eldest sister spoke up.
"We were all scared of the demon hunters...."
(y/n) perked up and moved closer to her to lean into as the eldest wrapped her arms around the girl and gazed out the window, where she can see rui gave a punishing wound to mother and walk away. her pale irises lowered and held tightly onto (y/n).
"and just wanted companions... it's not like we wanted to take part in this baffling "pretend family" game. but those who fail to go along with rui's orders and demands get carved up or maybe have their intellect taken from them or get strung up, exposed to the sunlight.....
" it's quite a nuisance really... you should've ran when he offered you a spot." (y/n) murmured, her eyes staring down at the ageing wood below her.
the new sister stared at the two with pursed lips and a tilt of her head as if curious, but her eyes said otherwise.
"mm, i'v─ we've had enough of this..."
'especially (y/n)' the eldest added into her thoughts.
oh dear (y/n), she was instantly caught into the web when she first step foot onto the mountain. that night... that night is what (y/n) wishes to take back. she wishes that she was never curious and befriended the young demon....
She wishes to never had caught feelings and expressed them.
the new sister looked straight ahead into nothing before a smile came upon her features.
"i'm going to pretend that i never heard you say tha─"
"we know you'e not a fool,"
"─huh?"
"unlike all the others..." (y/n) piped up, finishing the eldests words.
"let's run away together." the eldest turned with a smile, locking eyes with the fellow spider demon. "I never said this to anyone but (y/n)... but it seems like I can truly consider you as my little sister too. would you consider coming with us?" her gaze shifted down to (y/n), who in turn was smiling up at her with hope shining in her sparkling (e/c) orbs. the only thing that rui let her keep from her days as human because he loves how the colour shines under the stars.
the eldests hand came up and cupped the side of her face, thumb gently brushing her cheeks caused the girl to lightly giggle when she leaned into her pale hand, enjoying her comforting hold.
new sister stared at the two with slightly widened orbs until the eldest used her free hand to hold out towards her to grasp.
"What do you say?"
without hesitation, new sister lightly grasped onto her open palm with a small smile.
"tomorrow," the eldest started, face turning serious. "rui will be summoned by... that person and descend the mountain.. that will be our chance then.. to escape. be prepared you too."
"mm" the other two nodded with determination.
soon the sky began to shift colour and rui called throughout the house for his certain interest, (y/n). reluctantly the girl went but not without one last look to the two and nodded before disappearing down the attic hatch.
moments passed when new sister spoke up.
"what is (y/n)'s role?"
the eldest turned with a sullen look.
"it's not determined but.... it's assumed that she's rui's lover. though he says she's just a temporary interest."
"how long has she been here?"
silence settled over the two.
"nee-sa─"
"who knows." the eldests face was blank. "i lost count of things. it's hard to keep up anymore when you're trying to keep in line and survive."
"...i see."
"maa, no need to worry. after tomorrow night, we'll be free and no longer have to worry!" she stood and made her way to the hatch that leads down."just rest up and trust me. everything will be alright." and with that, she's gone. leaving the new sister by her lonesome.
___________________________
"rui?"
"(y/n), come here."
the girl jogged to catch up as he leaded into the living space.
"sit here." he ordered as he sat down himself on his knees.
she followed suit and sat beside him, hands resting nervously in her lap.
rui held a purple  flower in front of her. a giboshi. (y/n) stared in awe at the flower and gently took it into her grasp, her fingers brushed touched the petals.
"i found it and it reminded me of you.. do you like it?"
his voice snapped her out of her state and purse her lips. "Yeah."
his head turned and his cold eyes pierced into hers, sending an uncomfortable shiver throughout her body. "what's the matter?"
although it's just a simple question, it felt like a demand. "w-what do you mean?"
he stared at her for moment before leaning in close, making her lean back with one hand out to suuport while the other of course held the flower to her chest.
"you know what I mean... is there something you're not telling me?"
she shook her head. "no, i promise."
he continued to stare and then he leaned in close, lips parting as if going for a kiss. (y/n) face burst into a bright red and beads of sweat slid down her temple. he moved in, closer and closer and closer and─
.
.
.
.
.
.
"you're a terrible liar, (y/n)..."
"Hu─"
(y/n) is yanked up from he spot to stand, dropping the beautiful flower to the old floor and let out a small yelp. small beads of blood formed on the digits of her fingers and wrist. tears formed the corners of her eyes and gritted her teeth.
"r-rui... i.. i-i promise!" she shouts. "i'm not lying!"
rui held his blank look and stood to move towards the dining area, it was then she noticed how his hands are positioned. she was so distracted from him being so close, she didn't have a chance whatsoever to defend herself to get out of the trouble she's now in.
making his way to the dining area, rui forced the girl to walk behind him, her arms outstretched from the forceful tug and the beads of blood dripped into a trail as they went.
"r-rui, please stop! you're hurting me!"
her pleas fell on deaf ears until they reached the dining and the family was already their.
some had smiles and others, neutral and one worrying.
"w-what's going on?" eldest sister questioned, only to be silenced by the signature cold stare and she went back to her position and only throwing small glances to (y/n).
'dinner' went somewhat peacefully, save for (y/n) who struggled with the webs wrapped around her limbs since she was also being controlled by how to eat and what certain thing to take and such...
Rui has full control.
___________________________
crickets sounded into the night sky as (y/n) sat out onto the porch, staring up into the night sky until footsteps sounded against the creaking wood. a hand settled onto her head, making her look up and see rui. her fear seemed evident but he didn't acknowledge.
"i'll be back soon, stay out of trouble." he states and went on his way.
(y/n) waited and hour or two until deeming it alright to go get her sisters. she maneuvered around the house and found them in a room at the end of one of the halls. the three nodded and went on their way with the eldest grabbing onto the other twos hands and they ran once they reached the outside.
they ran,
and ran...
and ran....
and ran.....
lightly panting as they made their way down the mountain. the eldest looked back and smiled and the two smiled back. their so close to freedom... at least, do they thought.
they slowly came to a stop once the very person they feared stood in their path. the eldests and (y/n)'s eyes widened in shock as the new sister let go and made her way to stand beside him.
(y/n)'s and the eldests hearts broke at the betrayal as their hands grasp tightened.
"you..... why?" (y/n)'s voice trembled, taking a step back.
'Why did she do it? We were.... We were so close...'
