The Glitch That's a Cryptid
Tumblr media
Picture it, the year is 2008, and you just bought a copy of Saints Row 2 for your Xbox 360. You're playing the zombie map and somehow you manage to glitch yourself out of bounds. Curiosity gets the best of you and you decide to explore it a bit, and why not? As a fellow glitch connoisseur it is always a treat to see how much a game can handle. As you're exploring seeing the sights beyond the map, you see a flash in the corner of the screen. It's a shadowy figure, was that from a zombie, an npc, or was it your own shadow? Suddenly the game freezes and you have to restart the console. A shame that the glitch exploration had to end, but it also looks like the game has very little wiggle room here. You boot up the game and something goes wrong, you can't get beyond the file select. The game has been officially bricked. If it's digital, you can redownload it and just be more cautious, if it's physical, you now have a tacky coaster.
This shadow is called the freezer, and it became an urban legend of sorts, but was quickly confirmed to be real. This glitch is also pretty creepy, it often looks like the shadow is actually pursuing the player, actively trying to destroy the game. It sounds like a creepy pasta, I expect to see this next to Ben Drowned and Sonic.exe.
This glitch is actually really well documented, so much so that we know that it is pretty common on the Xbox release. Why? Well we're not too sure, one theory is that the hardware issues of the 360 contributed to it, but the source of the glitch is unknown. Something about going beyond the border makes the game destroy itself. This could just be a case of spaghetti code being spaghetti code.
It is already rare for a glitch to spawn an entire character, but to create an abyssal horror is something else. On top of that, this is a glitch that can destroy the game. I cannot overstate how wrong something has to go for this to happen, and this is tied to something as simple as going beyond the level boundaries, one of the most common and simple types of glitches. Be careful with this one I guess.

I don't they just dabble in everything but what would the Saints' area of crime really be??
The reboot Saints seem more like they would primarily be a gang of thieves more than anything given their "fuck the rich" attitudes but the OG Saints are a bit harder to place because they're meant to control everything as you progress the game.

OK hold on, I've always kind of let Keith David take a back seat in my hc because it felt wrong doing much with a real person. But I think I could open up a lot of possibilities developing him as an OC instead(thank you Teddy for that idea). Given he seems to want power for himself, and looking at the fact the Boss is shown less and less respect in the later games (don't get me started on that btw), what if he's the biggest contributor to that?
Have his background similar to Keith's, having been a famous actor within SR-verse but considerably more washed-up. He's still famous, but he really needs this. He's thrown into the Saints as the "famous face" but actually he's the one who questions if it was merely fame that's got them government roles.
Subtly undermining Casey at every turn, and even he doesn't know to what extent he's doing it on purpose and to what extent he really thinks she's incapable. She's half his age and he doesn't really understand how she got into power other than just general media frenzy. She jokes around a lot and he's pretty serious. If he were to take a lot of what she says at face value she would actually seem pretty ridiculous.
Casey's always had the duck paddling frantically underwater thing going for her; if things are being done yet she seems remarkably calm, it's reasonable to say he would assume she's having everyone else do the work for her. It would be a slow thing, too. Pointing things out that make them all wonder. She used to jump in and get involved when it was gang fights. What's she doing now?
All contributing to this idea of a leader who works hard and is for the most part, well-liked, but not truly respected anymore. It comes up a lot that Casey is underestimated in one way or another. It would hurt so much more to have the people who did truly believe in you questioning your capabilities just because your role has changed by necessity.

There is a disappointing lack of Matt art that I've done seeing as he's my biggest comfort and I am very (not) normal about him.

Hey- was anyone else confused on the zombies coming out of basically nowhere’s in SRTT???? Like it was fun and all- (to an extent) but like-.?..why in a saint row game?- like I know I shouldn’t be confused about that part of a game tbh that has cloning, aliens in the 4th one- and then actually hell- but I can’t help but be a bit confused here man, it was also just an annoying mission to kinda get through, I’m just so confused on it, it felt like it came out of nowhere’s
(This is just me saying I can suspend my disbelief for these games-… if done right and i don’t think the zombies were done right imo)

I have never met a game whose story is fighting its open world concept as hard as Red Dead Redemption 2 does.
I've reached Chapter 6, and so far the main story of the game is the gang drawing too much attention to their crimes, getting into an epic shootout, and then having to shift camps, towns, even states, because they're wanted men.
It's 1899. The Wild West is dying, the strength of federal and state governments and their collaboration with Pinkertons is growing, an outlaw can't simply shift to the next town over with a different name. We're losing people, the law is closing in on us, everyone is feeling desperate. It is literally the story of our protagonist losing his old way of life and his world getting smaller and smaller.
But like. His world isn't actually any smaller.
How am I supposed to take Arthur saying "I'm a wanted man in two states :(" seriously when I have the whole map at my disposal, with any of the bounties I get (including ones from main story missions!) easily paid off at the local post office.
This is way worse than when open worlds make it seem like the protagonist is fucking around while the world is on fire! At least then it is merely that the open world is orthogonal to the main story, and some games even throw in a token reason to go running around (see: closing portals in Dragon Age: Inquisition). But here the open world actively fights against the deliberate claustrophobia and panic that the main story is trying to induce in us, which is the worst interplay of open world and main plot I've seen.

Thinking about the development for Zoo from SR2 to SR3. He's like a completely different person in the span of only like 5 years. Current Zoo knows how terrible he was back then, and he definitely regrets some of his actions.
SR2 Zoo was practically on a rampage, plus he was on a massive power trip with being the new leader of the Saints. He had been betrayed and blown up and put in a coma for five years, from a teenager into his early 20s. He was a young gang leader, had to rebuild the Saints from pretty much nothing. He had to watch as his best friend almost died because of the Ronin, because of him. He had to put Carlos out of his misery after The Brotherhood got to him. Because of Zoo. Aisha was dead, Shaundi almost got killed by Veteran Child. Zoo was on a rampage and it cost lives, but that didn't stop him in the time being. It drove him further. He was filled with blood lust and angry at the world and had no sort of control over himself. He acted impulsively and didn't stop to think about consequences whatsoever. SR3 Zoo still has a temper and doesn't often think about his actions, but he takes a bit more pause now, and he actually feels guilt for his actions.
Zoo actually hates the person he was back in SR2, but he doesn't say it. He blames the person he was for a lot of the blood that's on his hands.
