Trivia - Kaede and Shion's Parents

The family life of Kaede, Ayaka, and Shion is something I've been considering for a while and recently solidified with their parents. I'm pretty happy with what I came up with in the end and I hope you like it as well.

Warnings: Past character death and illness.

Reina Shinaki (Played by Maki Sakai)

Her kindness is a trait that's been passed down to both her daughters.

The kanji of her name (麗永) means 'beautiful eternity'.

She is played by Keiko Kitagawa in flashbacks.

She had fallen ill due to old age, leading Kaede to support her in any way she can.

Kazuha Shinaki (Played by Takayuki Yamada)

He and Reina are both very protective of Kaede, especially after Ayaka's death, but are also loving and caring to both their daughters.

The kanji of his name (和葉) means 'harmony leaf'.

He had passed away prior to the start of the series.

He often appears in flashbacks and is supportive of his daughters.

Mizuki Akamatsu (Played by Yuki Sakurai)

She and Yuuki cherish Shion deeply, who is their only child.

The kanji of her name (望) means 'hope'.

She inspired Shion's love for fairytale endings of true love and happily ever afters.

She is a gardener who tries her best to help Kaede's mother Reina, especially after she fell ill while still supporting her daughter.

Yuuki Akamatsu (Played by Sho Aoyagi)

Shion has vivid memories of her childhood and how much she loved her family as much as he and Mizuki loved her.

The kanji of his name (優希) means 'gentle hope'.

He helped Shion feel like a princess who'll find true love one day.

He works at a local children's hospital and tries his best to juggle work and spending time with his daughter.

-- That's was how the world of "Michiko and Hatchin" was born.

Y: In addition, in case of "Michiko", that I've met with Ujita-san also had a big impact on this work. When I was wondering, who should I ask to write the screenplay for "Michiko", I had a few potential candidates, but no-one really stood out to me as the right one. I was worried that if I decided to work with an anime scriptwriter, then the project would take a turn into a different direction compared to what I wanted to do. So I decided to look for a scriptwriter in a different place. And then I found out that one person on the production team was on the same year at Osaka Art University as Ujita-san and director Kumakiri Kazuyoshi.

-- This is how Ujita-san appeared as a potential candidate?

Y: I had seen a few works that Ujita-san wrote a script for - I think "Antenna" and "Green Mind, Metal Bats". There was a lot of lines that really spoke to me. In "Green Mind, Metal Bats", there is that female character, Eiko, voiced by Sakai Maki - she's a women, who drinks a lot and makes trouble (laugh). I really like it when women act violent like that, not just Eiko (laugh).

-- By any chance, is it the reason why the character, Atsuko, in "Michiko and Hatchin" is voiced by Sakai-san?

Y: Yeah, it is. It was also because wanted to make "Michiko" into an anime that you watch feeling a kind of tension, and I wanted my voice actors to have a certain rawness in them, so I cast more live-action movie actors. I didn't have any actors among my acquaintances, so Ujita-san helped me here.

kiki izayoi: child of sounosuke izayoi and ruruka andou. ultimate observer. likes to watch rather than participate. observational skills are similar to ult analyst skills. they’re very kind, and will often do small gestures to show their love (eg, once heard chiharu mention her favorite type of candy [konpeito] and then when she was feeling sick made some for her). works for future foundation as well. they/them pan nb, adhd, autism.

akira sakai: not a fankid. ultimate assassin. under the thumb of the holy salvation army (same cult that got maki), they’re threatening him with releasing a copy of junko’s ai into the public if he doesn’t obey. he’s pretty sure it’s a bluff but he doesn’t want to risk it. he’s pretty talkative, mostly as a front so people don’t see how depressed he secretly is. he/him transhet, ptsd, potentially osdd-1a but he’s never heard of it lol.

mamoru miki: not a fankid, but rantaro’s niece (not that he knows that). ultimate spy. very talkative, but in a ramble-y way—they hate the silence and will do anything to fill it. they come off as a bit of a ditz but they’re very dedicated to their profession. they/them sapphic transfem, adhd.

kau yamamoto: not a fankid. ultimate influencer. not in a social media way, but in a “really good at getting people to do what she wants” way. she uses this talent for good, like say rebuilding homes that were torn down by storms, or donating to public services like libraries. she’s very upbeat and cheerful. she/her lesbian, ocd.
