In true [Marion] Fairfax style, her [1919] script of The Secret Garden is a model of creepy details and shifty, underhanded dealings. These include Mary's two forays into a bog, and Dr. Craven's plot to poison Colin so that the doctor can inherit the manor. The movie is designed to keep filmgoers in a state of pop-eyed anxiety, but it also gratifies the softhearted by interposing an especially doting Mrs. Sowerby, and by marrying off Colin and Mary, who in this version are not cousins. Fairfax's Mrs. Medlock is a punishing crone who forces Mary to hem towels as a penalty for having helped Colin remove a brace prescribed by the sadistic Dr. Craven. At the end of the picture, the garden is "full of bloom, and happiness reigns"; but an important function of this mysterious walled quadrangle on the grounds of Misselthwaite is to serve as a place of retribution in which the children bury Colin's brace, to even the score with the malevolent medic.
--Sally Sims Stokes, "Painting the Garden: Noel Streatfeild, the Garden as Restorative, and Pre-1950 Dramatizations of The Secret Garden," from In the Garden: Essays in Honor of Frances Hodgson Burnett, edited by Angelica Shirley Carpenter
The first film adaptation of The Secret Garden was made in 1919. It has since been lost, but its script and a summary do still exist, from which Stokes derives the above description. It is interesting how many elements not from the book that are part of this adaptation have continued to be used by later films, such as the villainization of the doctor and Mrs. Medlock, romance between the children, and sensationalized action sequences. Yet unlike many later versions, it includes Mrs. Sowerby in a significant role.

a few days ago, a certain robert chromolume and i brainstormed the most boring and bad possible movie version of follies
-initial announcement: rob marshall is directing a movie of follies, starring meryl streep as sally. (apparently this was already an announcement/rumor, and i just forgot about it? lol). jeremy o harris is tapped to write the screenplay.
-they are soon joined by julia roberts as phyllis, george clooney as ben, and john c reilly as buddy.
-additional casting: alec baldwin as weismann, lily james as young sally, liza minnelli as carlotta, renee fleming as heidi
-also announced: there’s going to be a new song! more on that later.
-uh oh! julia roberts has dropped out. she landed a buzzier role—playing lucy barton in the hbo miniseries adaptation of the elizabeth strout novels (s/o to @hesupportsyou for helping us with this one). george clooney dropped out shortly afterward (he just wanted to work with julia roberts again, i don’t think his heart was really in it). they’re replaced by emma thompson and richard gere.
-final casting announcement: jo ellen pellman as young phyllis, whoever is doing the josh gad role in book of mormon as young buddy, jeremy jordan as young ben, sierra boggess as young heidi, audra mcdonald as stella, ariana debose as young stella
-jeremy o harris left the project for mysterious reasons. aaron sorkin is now scrambling to write the screenplay.
-right before shooting is set to begin, liza minnelli injures her ankle. poor liza! she’s replaced by carol burnett. theatre people on tumblr and twitter post disposable takes like “i’m wishing liza a speedy recovery, but i’m also excited to hear carol’s take on the song.” some people say stuff like “you can be excited for carol burnett without being glad that liza minnelli injured her ankle, just fyi” in response to no one in particular. neither carol burnett nor liza minnelli see any of these tweets. (liza minnelli recovers, btw.)
-one more kiss is cut for time, which means you randomly have shots of renee fleming and sierra boggess in the background. (this is particularly upsetting for renee fleming, who will spend the rest of her career sticking to opera roles.)
-the new song is by sara bareilles, written because a) the producers are hoping for a best song oscar nomination, and b) it was in alec baldwin’s contract that he gets an expanded role. there’s a promo behind-the-scenes video where rob marshall is like “one hesitation i had going into this project is we don’t really get to know weismann. we’re so lucky to have sara onboard to help us flesh him out as a character.” the song is sung by weismann, toward the end of the movie (but probably before loveland), and it’s about him looking back at his mistreatment of the follies girls, realizing he has to live with his past mistakes (broadwayworld describes it as “an anthem for the #metoo era” or something). it’s the most boring song ever written. the sara bareilles version of it plays over the end credits. it is not nominated for an oscar.
follies!

“Middleton had an unusual gift of being able to gallop over sofas and arm-chairs, landing on his hands with his hindquarters tucked under him like a wolf, an accomplishment he used to display with great success in the anteroom after dinner.
“At Cologne Station we were accosted by an unpleasant stationmaster dressed as a cross between an Admiral of the Fleet and a Sergeant-Major, who said we had far too much luggage in the carriage…
While we were arguing with him in bad German, we saw that Middleton was becoming restive; and suddenly he leapt from the train and started galloping up and down the platform, jumping heaps of luggage and snapping over his shoulder. This sally alarmed everyone, including ourselves. But we hastily explained that our brother officer was a bit queer because of sun-stroke, and that we were by way of looking after him.
This went down better than we could have hoped, and after we had coaxed Middleton back to his lair, we had the carriage to ourselves for the rest of the journey.”
Burnett-Stuart’s memoir has some really wonderful anecdotes in it like this. Apparently he was also quite good at what he called “rybald rhymes” although sadly, he didn’t include any in the memoir.

In the 1989 film, Ryan’s character Sally pretends to have an orgasm while eating at Katz’s Deli with Billy Crystal‘s character Harry. The iconic scene, Ryan reveals, was shot “over and over and over again.”
“It’s funny, my son just called me this morning and he’s in New York staying at a hotel that’s right across the street from Katz’s Deli. My daughter was here and everybody was on speaker, and they were like, ‘Mom, this is a very unique embarrassment,'” Ryan recalls. “He said, ‘You know you can go into that deli and there’s an arrow pointing down to the table where you shot that scene.’ I wonder if it’s the right one.”

A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I grew up to the cartoon show, Sally, on Spacetoon, so that's how I'll keep referring to this little princess. Needless to say, this book is an absolute gem. I can't begin to express my love for it, the writing, the characters, and the atmosphere. Simply brilliant, and I'm quite happy to say that I think the show did an excellent job adapting this treasure of a novel. American film butchered it though, surprise surprise.

[ad_1] Meg Ryan revealed that her children are mortified by her famous fake orgasm scene from her classic 1989 romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally."In the scene, Ryan's character Sally loudly demonstrates how women can fake reaching sexual climax in front of Billy Crystal's Harry and all the other patrons at New York City's Katz's Deli.During a conversation with Carol Burnett for Interview magazine, the 61-year-old actress, who is set to make her return to the big screen for the first time in eight years, shared how her son Jack Quaid, 31, and daughter Daisy Ryan, 19, really feel about the iconic movie moment."It's funny, my son just called me this morning and he’s in New York staying at a hotel that’s right across the street from Katz’s Deli. My daughter was here and everybody was on speaker, and they were like, ‘Mom, this is a very unique embarrassment,’" Ryan told Burnett, 90, with a laugh. Meg Ryan revealed that her children describe her fake orgasm scene from "When Harry Met Sally" as the "very unique embarrassment." (Taylor Hill/WireImage)She continued, "He said, ‘You know you can go into that deli and there’s an arrow pointing down to the table where you shot that scene.’"‘TOP GUN: MAVERICK’: MEG RYAN AND KELLY MCGILLIS WEREN'T ASKED TO RETURN, DIRECTOR CONFIRMS "Oh God," the comedy icon responded."I wonder if it's the right one," Ryan added.Ryan shares Jack with her ex-husband Dennis Quaid, 69, and she adopted Daisy in 2006. Ryan is mother to son Jack Quaid, 31, and daughter Daisy Ryan, 19, (Getty)The Connecticut native went on to recall that the cast and crew filmed the fake orgasm scene "over and over and over again." During a 2019 "When Harry Met Sally" reunion panel with Ryan, Crystal and director Rob Reiner, Reiner explained that the scene required multiple takes and said he stepped in for Ryan at one point to show her how he wanted the moment to play out."The first couple of times, it was like, 'I need it more, I need it more.' And then it was 'Let me show you.' So I sat across from Billy," Reiner remembered."He had an orgasm Mighty Joe Young would have been proud of," Crystal joked.Crystal also recalled how many times Ryan had to act the scene out to get it right. "On the other side of her, I ate 27 pastrami sandwiches," the six-time Emmy Award winner said. "For any Jew, that's a lot.""When Harry Met Sally" became a box office hit and remains an enduring comedy classic. The part of Sally marked Ryan's first leading role in a movie and she earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance. Ryan starred opposite Billy Crystal pose in the 1989 classic romantic comedy. (Hulton Archive)Ryan went on to become the queen of 90s rom-coms, starring in a number of the genre's most popular films including "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail."Following an eight-year hiatus from acting, Ryan will next be seen in the upcoming movie "What Happens Later," which also stars David Duchovny. The film also marks Ryan's first romanic comedy role in 15 years. In addition to starring in "What Happens Now," Ryan also directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Dietz and Kirk Lynn. In 2015, the actress made her directorial debut with the drama "Ithaca," in which she also starred alongside her son Jack."Truly, the easiest part was acting in it," Ryan told Burnett during their Interview conversation.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTERShe continued, "I want to direct again just so I can sit in the chair, because I’m sure there’s a lot of things I missed. I hadn’t done a role in a really long time, but it was fun with David."  In 2019, Ryan, Crystal and director Rob Reiner reunited for a panel to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "When Harry Met Sally." (Gregg DeGuire/FilmMagic)"A lot of it was done in two shots. I’m proud of that. I set up everything beforehand so that once we were there, it was just David and I trying to tell the truth."In the movie, Ryan and Duchovny play ex-lovers who reunite decades after their split when they are stranded at an airport during a snowstorm.Ryan explained that she began working on the screenplay while quarantining during the COVID-19 pandemic."They sent me the script— which was a first or second draft by the playwright [Dietz]—based on a play called 'Shooting Star,'" Ryan recalled.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPShe continued, "I had just moved to California at the beginning of the pandemic and it was this big collective pause, so that script got me thinking about what was happening in the world, how we were all kind of put under a glass." "I started working on it and over the course of a year and a half, the script evolved and David came on. We got to know each other over these Zoom calls and some of those conversations found their way into the script, too.""What Happens Later" will be released in theaters on Oct. 13.
