Etymology

The country’s name is thought to come from the Spanish city of Granada.

Geography

Grenada is located in Central America, between Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad, and is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea.

The island has a tropical rainforest climate. Temperatures range from 22 °C (71.6 °F) in winter to 31 °C (87.8 °F) in summer. The average annual temperature is 27.1 °C (80.8 °F).

The country is divided into six parishes. The largest cities in Grenada are Saint George’s, Gouyave, Grenville, Victoria, and Saint David’s.

Economy

Grenada mainly imports from the United States, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Cayman Islands and exports to the United States, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and France. Its top exports are nutmeg, fish, and wheat flour.

The economy is based on tourism. Services represent 69% of the GDP, followed by industry (20%) and agriculture (11%).

Grenada is a member of the Caribbean Community, the Commonwealth, the Organization of American States, and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.

Demographics

82% of the population identifies as black, while 13.3% is mixed and 2.2% is Indian. The main religion is Christianity, practiced by 96.6% of the population, 48.8% of which is Protestant.

It has a negative net migration rate and a fertility rate of 1.9 children per woman. 36.9% of the population lives in urban areas. Life expectancy is 75.7 years and the median age is 33.3 years. The literacy rate is 98.6%.

Languages

The official language of the country is English, but the primary languages are Grenadian Creole English and Grenadian Creole French.

Culture

Grenadian culture has African and British influences and less visible French influences. An important aspect is the tradition of storytelling.

Men traditionally wear a shirt and pants. Women wear a white blouse with ruffles, a long, wide skirt with ruffles and a layer on top, and a head wrap.

Architecture

Traditional houses in Grenada have colorful wooden walls, tin roofs, and balconies and porches.

Cuisine

The Grenadian diet is based on fish, meat, rice and vegetables. Typical dishes include callaloo soup (a soup of a green spinach-like leaf), fudge (candy made of coconut milk, dark chocolate, and spices), lambie souse (seafood in lime juice), oil down (a stew of breadfruit, callaloo, coconut milk, and salted meat), and pelau (a dish of beans, carrots, chicken, peppers, and rice).

Holidays and festivals

Like other Christian countries, Grenada celebrates Good Friday, Easter Monday, Whit Monday, Corpus Christi, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. It also commemorates New Year’s Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving Day.

Specific Grenadian holidays include Independence Day on February 7, Emancipation Day on the first Monday in August, Carnival on August 11, and Maurice Bishop Day on October 19.
