Song Review: Alison Brown & Steve Martin - “Bluegrass Radio”

It’s not the humor that makes Steve Martin attractive to women. It’s the music.

At least that’s the story he tells on “Bluegrass Radio,” a new single credited to Martin and fellow banjoist Alison Brown and with assistance from Sam Bush on mandolin, Stuart Duncan on fiddle, Trey Hensley on guitar and Todd Phillips on bass.

Number three in California/five in Arizona/didn’t seem to mean a thing to you/but I got number one in Texas/and now you fix me breakfast/because I am a hit on bluegrass radio, goes the chorus.

It’s an uptempo, pure-bluegrass number with vocal harmonies smoothing out Martin’s spoken lyrics and virtuosic playing making the humorous “Bluegrass Radio” much more than a novelty.

The tune is in reference to the duo’s previous hit “Foggy Morning Breaking,” which appeared on Brown’s 2023 On Banjo LP.

EAST HAVEN'S 1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY EVENT: THE WIND STORM

With the 1 year anniversary of East Haven's opening, we have decided to have an event that centers around a wind storm that is blowing it's way through town, inciting chaos where ever it goes. The event will start on January 5th at 12pm (noon) and end on January 15th at 12am (midnight). No new starters should be posted after January 10th.

You were placed into groups that are listed below. You will be expected to write with at least one character in that group that you normally do not write with. You are still free to do other threads with others in the group, but are required to at least one.

Craig Fuller and Shaun Murphy to Temporarily Reunite with Little Feat in Mexico

- Feat Camp set for Jan. 17-20, 2024

Former Little Feat vocalists Craig Fuller and Shaun Murphy will temporarily rejoin the band during its annual Feat Camp excursion to Mexico.

Fuller is the Pure Prairie League co-founder who replaced Lowell George between 1987 and 1993. And Murphy is the singer previously known as Stony who recorded with pre-fame Meat Loaf and toured with Bob Seger. She replaced Fuller and stuck around until 2009. Both have guested with Feat since their respective departures, but this dual return is being billed as a “once-in-a-lifetime” event.

The getaway is scheduled for Jan. 17-20, 2024, in Cancun.

Shout out a podcast that's on break but I listened to a lot, museum of the vanishing dog.

What is it?

Two hosts, Sam Hensley and Lizz Hamilton, take us through each episode their museum that will never open, always in construction, with unique exhibits that one host a week trading off takes us through describing the who and what's and where's.

What's it like?

I really thought my first listen they were very reckless actual museum curators. It's extremely immersive. I wanted to know where I could go visit the mellified lamb in a cafe that was a pun on a death process, which you can't. It's also funny in that way the hosts effortlessly guide touch point to touch point, so that I want to Google the artists they talk about or events. There's an exhibt for a blind prophetess to an arc of all extinct dogs, and a long chat about a flayed furby.

Ludozoology Recommended Readings

As my Furby/Peepy evolution posts gain traction yet again and more of you good people become interested in the field of Ludozoology, I’d like to recommend some things to help newcomers get into the headspace of this made up area of science.

• ItemLabel’s official Cool Videos playlist has much interesting Peepy and general ItemLabel lore, especially itemlabel 2U and itemLabel AWR 2022.

• lovelandisle’s Weird and Hilarious Furby Fakes and Bootlegs! showcases some interesting Furby descendants, I encourage newcomers to imagine how these descendants may have evolved into some of the toys we know today.

• Museum of The Vanishing Dog Episode 4: Furby Flaying, a podcast episode less about the evolution of the Furby, but an interesting exploration of the idea of Furby as God conduit (similar to my own theory of the Furby as Horseman of climate death) I should also mention that the presenter of the episode, Sam Hensley, is on tumblr as samsketch book where they post drawings and customized animatronic sculptures very reminiscent of customized Furbies, and I high recommend following her.

• The Shelby Care and Training Guide a watershed moment in canon Furby lore.  Includes information about the eldritch creature who originally domesticated the Furby.

These recommendations are mostly based on my specialization in Furbies and Peepies, but I encourage newcomers to find their own niche of ludozoology if other toys call out to them :)
