This is Shogun, done in 2010 as an art trade for a DeviantArt friend. Todd McFarlane's Samurai Spawn action figures inspired a lot of the armor design for this guy. My trade partner wanted the helmet design to look like the ones in one of the recet AvP series (Three World War, I think), but left the rest of the design up to me. I thought the helmets looked very samurai-esque.

Yes, this guy was an absolute bear to color. Not sorry at all. It's still among my favorite Predator drawings.

I made this with ink, watercolor, and Prismacolor pencils.

Let's talk about Dante and Vergil's swords, Rebellion and Yamato, and their "publication history" if you will.

In DMC1, Dante's default sword he starts with is Force Edge. It is described as being a "momento from his father."

However by the end of DMC1, Force Edge has its true power unlocked and becomes the devil sword Sparda.

It stays like that permanently afterwards, it never reverts back to being regular Force Edge. So when they were developing DMC2 they needed a new regular default sword for Dante because they couldn't just have him start out using Sparda, so they came up with Rebellion.

I doubt they put any thought into this whatsoever at the time. But when Itsuno was making DMC3, he decided to take the sword they came up with for Dante from the second game and rewrote it a little so that the Rebellion was the sword that Sparda left Dante after all!

Since he was also rewriting Force Edge to be the key that locked away the Underworld, and they had another non-Force Edge sword invented up, it opened things up so that they could take that sword they invented to replace Force Edge in DMC2 to have a lot more importance invoked into it!

And since they were also taking Vergil and completely changing his character for the sake of their plot for this prequel game, let's also give him a keepsake sword from Sparda! You might not realize this if you hadn't beaten DMC1 at least on hard mode, but the Yamato was NOT just some random cool samurai sword that they gave Vergil because he's so cool. You see back in DMC1 if you beat it on hard mode you unlocked the Legendary Dark Knight mode, which was a model swap for Dante where he was dressed up as Sparda. And along with Sparda's clothes and DT, you also got to use Sparda's sword the Yamato!

That's right, the Yamato as a sword actually predates Vergil the character as we know him. The detail that it has the power to DIVIDE things in two is even right there in the description from the original game as well! So Itsuno took this bonus weapon that is described as being wielded by Sparda, and decided it was the matching keepsake weapon given to Vergil in DMC3. Since Vergil is the older twin, he gets the sword Sparda actually used himself.

The way these swords of such esteem power and prominence have the origin of Itsuno taking disparate elements from the baton passing development of the first two games where the original was made by Kamiya and the second game was made under duress is really nifty to me. Playing DMC5 you'd almost think it was all planned out from the beginning, but nothing could be further from the truth. That's the mark of true creativity I think. Instead of just saying DMC2 was bad and ignoring everything about it, he took the default sword from that game and did something creative with it. Now in the majority of peoples minds, Rebellion is the signature sword for Dante. And by that same token, most fans don't have any idea that Yamato was an unlockable weapon all the way back from the first game because it's just so iconic as Vergil's signature blade.

Pretty cool, I think.

So I've thoroughly gone insane from the Predator: Killer of Killers trailer, and I will make you all part of my madness. I want to really look into the difference between our three new yautja. Each is in a different time period that the fandom has been BEGGING TO SEE. (granted, there are comics of the yautja coming to a head in the WW2 era but more depictions never hurt anyone)

I'm dividing up these three as Viking Yautja Samurai Yautja and Dogfight Yautja (Dogfight being the name for aerial close combat as seen in the trailer)

First, let's talk about Viking Predator, the one I consider to be the most prominent of the trio. I'll be using she/her to address her from here on out as it's my personal theory (and hope) that she could be our first on-screen female yautja, considering there's canon lore that makes women of the species bigger.

She's everything to me. SHE IS SO DAMN BIG AND I LOVE IT. JUST LOOK AT THOSE COLORS. She's ghastly, cold-toned, like a ghost. Her crest almost looks like pure fossil. Then there's tidbit from the trailer after she kills an approaching viking

SHE HAS A GODDAMN HAMMER OF G O D FOR A HAND. Not only is this such a cool weapon, and some pretty neat depiction of a disabled yautja, but there's a story here, as seen in another moment of the trailer where she in fact has this hand still attached

Is this a revenge story? Will we see her get her hand cut off AND the process of replacing it Ash Williams-style? Considering the series record of medical scenes, it only makes sense director Dan Trachtenberg would add that in.

Next, let's get onto Samurai Predator: He's sandy. Sandy as all hell.

At first I wasn't so sure on the mask, makes him look so snoopy, but there's something very interesting about his face design. You can clearly see his bottom mandibles, but the top ones? Are they hiding?

You can see his face underneath the mask just a bit, its pretty far off, so it creates a cover over him, but again WHHEEERREEE are those top mandibles?

OH LORD I DONT THINK HE HAS ANY. Whether this is a case of his mandibles being ripped off, or simply born without them is a toss-up, but it's a cool bit of diversity if yautja can be born without top mandibles.

Fraid there's not much I can say about Samurai other than he's a more classic seeming character. Not imposing like Viking Yautja, but has a standard arsenal, taking on opponents in a closed space, very agile, and stealthy considering how much he uses cloak in his portions of the trailer. Finally. My husband.

Dogfight is a SPECIAL case, because just look at him compared to the others. He is JAGGED. Missing eye, dreads SHEERED OFF to nothing, some kind of metal plating going down the center of his face. He has had a rough go at it, but he's also A FIGHTER PILOT. There's a look of sterness on him that is just almost chilling, he's calm, collected, and barely makes any noise compared to anyone else out of the trailer. He's the most "secured" of the group, but goddamn does he look like he takes the hunt seriously. Also this is WW2. I hope he kills nazis. That's all I can really say about these three, it is flat-out AMAZING we are getting so much distinction between their designs, their method of attack, and even shreds of personality here and there.

MHWorld: Yeah, we had a monster who basically came in on a comet, had a younger form, fought it until it died, found a SECOND one, fought it in its adult stage, and it had some wicked attacks.

MHRise: That's crazy. I've fought A giant mole infested with parasites so nasty that they actually caused several monsters to become crazy, fought the so called "Master of these parasites", won against that, fought Gore and it's adult forms, had a ton of elders to fight, and the last one... Oh right, basically a tiger with the move sets of a samurai!

MHWilds: That's nuts. All I've encountered was the respected top predators: A ray cannon that can fly, a Sumo wrestler fish, an Oil Octopus, and basically a predator over all of those with an appetite that almost collapsed ecosystems. Also the Guardian over the stream of energy over the region, that keeps regenerating, and that Gore fellow you said.

MHWorld: Wow, at least my game is done. You twos are still getting updates.

MHWilds: Yeah, hey Rise, one of your monsters got loose.

MHRise: Oh, which one?

MHWilds: That Water bubble Weasel.
