Van Gogh AiR heeft het genoegen u uit te nodigen voor de opening van de expositie “in Melankolieverf” van Diana Roig op zondag 29 juli 2018 om 15.00 uur in de Van GoghGalerie in Zundert. Roig heeft in juli 2018 gewerkt in het gastatelier bij de kosterswoning uit Vincents tijd. De resultaten daarvan zijn t/m 26 augustus te bewonderen in de Van GoghGalerie.

Diana Roig (1982, Mar del Plata Argentinië) is een intuïtieve, abstracte schilder die haar waarnemingen vertaald in vorm en kleur. Haar schilderijen zijn ogenschijnlijk abstract met figuratieve tendensen. Vaak is haar palet te herleiden naar de plek waar ze het werk gemaakt heeft of de energie die ze gedurende die tijd heeft gevoeld. Herinnering, ervaring en natuur spelen hierbij een grote rol.

In 2017 ontving ze een onderzoek- en ontwikkelingbeurs waarmee ze twee maanden naar de jungle van Peru is gegaan. Daar heeft ze onderzoek gedaan naar natuurlijke pigmenten in een permacultura dorp in San Roque de Cumbaza,. Dit heeft geleid tot nieuw werk dat ontstaat uit vergankelijke materialen. In het gastatelier van het Vincent van GoghHuis keert ze terug naar het door haar zo geliefde olieverf. Haar opa schilderde als hobby veel oude Nederlandse meesters, met name Van Gogh. Al opgroeiend heeft het werk van Van Gogh haar altijd gefascineerd en geïnspireerd. Zijn penseelstreken zijn in haar herinneringen gegrift.

In Zundert is een hoofdrol weggelegd voor de schoonheid van de Oude Buisse Heide. Roig voelt een mysterieuze verwantschap met Henriette Roland Holst. “Het voelt alsof ik mijn inner Vincent en Henriette met elkaar moet laten dansen op het doek.”

Diana Roig is afgestudeerd in 2007 aan de Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam. Haar werk is opgenomen in verschillende internationale privé collecties in New York, Londen, Frankfurt en Mexico City. Ze heeft haar werk geëxposeerd in onder andere New York, Londen, Peru, Amsterdam, Rotterdam en won vorig jaar bij de Koninklijke Prijs voor Vrije Schilderkunst de publieksprijs voor het beste schilderij.

Strips of bark form the Atidijo tree found in the Amazon Rainforest

Two installations built along a mountain trail leading from the small village of San Roque de Cumbaza up to multiple vantage points overlooking the Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area. The trail also connects with a network of dense forest pathways interwoven with villages and farms throughout the mountains in the Northern Amazon Jungle of Peru. Through spending time with local Peruvians and the Quechua Indigenous population in the village, I had the opportunity to learn about local materials and techniques as well as how the community identifies and interacts with the demanding landscape they call home. Through an explorative process of weaving strips of bark harvested from the Atadijo Tree, I constructed Para: A ladder built between two trees leading higher into the canopy, and Por: a portal through which locals and visitors can pass as they hike the trail. These works draw obvious inspiration from the work of artist Andy Goldsworthy in their use of natural materials to create ephemeral work in nature, and exploring the relationship between human and the land. They are intended to spark subtle and unexpected interaction in their unique remote setting.
