Period drama week 2023-
Tumblr media
Lady Violet Crawley (Maggie Smith), the absolute queen of Downton Abbey. What more can be said?
Best line: I'm a woman Mary, I can be as contrary as I choose.
Tumblr media
Day 6: Favourite characters.
William Buxton (Tom Hiddleston), Cranfords resident dog dad. Have to give a shout out to Sykes, Hiddles may have been my teenage crush but he will forever be my favourite actor RIP.
Best trait: Hopeless romantic.
Elizabeth Butler (Charlie Murphy) she has it all talent to sing, brains to train as a doctor, born into money yet has a heart for those "beneath" her. Truly embodies the spirit of Rebellion, I wish she was in the second series or at least had more than that one line mention.
Tumblr media
Best feat: Joined the Easter rising faught and healed, all while looking stunning in her wedding dress.
This is in no particular order appart from definitely number 1.
Tumblr media
Best line: Wouldn't dream of it *sassiest head wobble known to mankind*
Captain Declan Fraser (Frank Blake), Sanditon season twos real heartthrob. Them eyes you could swim in with the sarcastic smile, why did any of the ladies look at anyone else? Heroic, intelligent, dry sense of humour and sensitive to boot. Austinesque swoonwodthyness at its peak.
Tumblr media
Abigail Hill (Emma Stone), so pure yet so evil, no wonder she is The Favourite. Amazing characterisation, still can't figure out if I love or loath her but I'm here for it.
Greatest feat: Changes the course of a war whilst holding the position of a maid.
Tumblr media
Benadict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson). If Colin is the labrador of the family, Benadict is the cat. Appreciative of the finer things in life, values aesthetics, is willing to play by his own rules and is very loving to his family (I especially love his relationship with Eloise, he doesn't understand her struggles but he still wants to listen and share a cheeky cig).
Best line: Poetry is the art of revealing precious truth with words.

I’m sorry, but it is SO funny to me that it wasn’t enough to have Sidney marry someone else and have Theo James leave the show, they had to literally kill Sidney too just to shut down any hope of them getting back together.
I literally laughed out loud when I saw his name on the coffin.

**OBI-WAN KENOBI SPOILERS**
I am so impressed with that little girl.
I swear, in the moment that she looked at Obi-Wan in the eye and continued to put on the gloves, I felt the spirit of Carrie Fisher herself come out.
She’s truly embodying Leia and I love it.

Welcome to the HOT JANE AUSTEN MEN bracket! We have just finished voting on all the HOTTEST Jane Austen Gentlemen and Rakes from all the many TV and Film Jane Austen Adaptations.
After nearly two months of voting we have our Winner! Thank you everyone for taking part and all your propaganda I will be taking a little break for a while but look out for more polls in the future...
All polls—including ongoing polls, previous rounds, mini ask polls—can be found in the #hotjaneaustenmenpoll tag. Every poll in the Hot Jane Austen Men Tournament is tagged with the hot regency man and the year his adaptation was made if you need to search for a hot man in particular.
FAQs:
“Where is [my favorite Jane Austen man]?” Have you checked all the polls in the tag? Have you done a tag search for him? Only some of the actors are tagged but if you search for his adaptation and the year he was in it you should find him! If you still haven’t found him, he probably isn't in this poll.
“WHERE ARE THE HOT JANE AUSTEN MEN. I want to see all the hot men competing in one place! -
The Final
Third Place Poll
Semi-Finals Master List!
Quarter-Finals Master List!
Round Three Master List!
Round Two Master List!
Round One Master List!
“Who is included on this list?” We started with 64 opponents readied their duelling pistols to defend their own hotness but only 8 remain! I included men from Pride and Prejudice 1940/1995/2005, Sense and Sensibility 1971/1995/2008, Emma 1996/1996/2009/2020, Northanger Abbey 2007, Persuasion 1995/2007/2022 and Mansfield Park 1983/ 1999/2007 as well as a couple from Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, one from Sanditon and one from Love and Friendship/Lady Susan. Most are the main hero/anti-heroes but there are a few others scattered in too.
Have you included Spin Offs ?”  The only strictly none Jane Austen adaptation I've included men from is Pride and Prejudice and Zombies because it is set in the correct time period, the characters are basically the same in terms of personality and I thought the casting was great! In terms of Sandition, Sidney Parker is the only man I have entered as he is mentioned in the book as well as the TV so sadly as much as I love the other Sanditon Men they aren't included!
"Can I submit hot Jane Austen men?”  Submissions are now closed! But my ask is still open for propaganda...
“I have additional propaganda for the hot men!” Great! Send me an ask, tag me in gifsets, fancams etc or reblog the poll and add your propaganda to it. Also feel free to send in any book propaganda!! I'll try to boost as much propaganda as possible
WHy is the propaganda so uneven on this poll? To stay impartial I only add propaganda to the main poll that has been sent in before each round's polls open. If you submit any after then I will reblog or post and add to the winner's propaganda in the next poll. If it's uneven it's because you never sent any in, not because I'm being biased.
"How have you paired up the men ?" I did start to try and vaguely seed the men but I will be honest I did get a bit slap dash towards the end which means a couple of the match-ups are maybe a bit too even but fun I hope!
If you’re submitting propaganda for your hot man, I don’t accept propaganda that is of the actor outside of their Specific Jane Austen Adaptation but I do accept propaganda from them in their respective books. I would love to be tagged in gifsets and fancams, and I'd like to boost propaganda that tells us why your Jane Austen man is your favourite :)
I won’t post or boost negative propaganda. If you really hate that a certain hot man is winning, send me positive propaganda for their hot opponent. I may make exceptions if your propaganda is of another Austen character bad mouthing him though...
If I see repetitive, trolling, and/or bigoted remarks in the comments, I may block you from this bracket. If you want to point out a hot man’s flaws or misdemeanors, that’s fine, but if I see consistent bad-faith trolling, you will be blocked.
On that note—if you have an issue with a poll, offer a solution! I'll do my best to keep the poll happy and fun, and I'll block people being dicks. If you don’t like a poll photo or a description, offer one I can use instead.
“My FAQ isn’t on here :(” send me an ask! I'd love to hear from you guys—just please check these basics first.
Thank you for being here! Enjoy the tournament.
And Thank You @hotvintagepoll for the inspiration!

Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, The Souvenir) as Cormoran Strike and Grainger (The Capture, Animals) as Robin Ellacott lead a cast of acclaimed British actors including David Westhead (Enola Holmes 2, Bodyguard), Christian McKay (Rivals, Dangerous Liaisons), Emma Fielding (Sanditon, Van der Valk), Tupele Dorgu (The Full Monty, Ridley) and James Nelson-Joyce (Time, Industry) amongst others.

I came across this tik tok video that talked about how women of color are treated when it comes to romance arcs in period dramas and this person brought up The Gilded Age, Sanditon, The Buccaneers and I'm not sure if they talked about Bridgerton but I feel like Marina and to an extent Edwina would fit in here perfectly.
I mean, even Kate tbh. The way Daphne was treated as the lead for her season--in which she very much was centered, even in the midst of subplots and her own pretty bad behavior--is very different from the way Kate was treated and sidelined (and frankly, not allowed to be treated like a sexual being and object of desire in the way Daph was).
The Gilded Age is shockingly bad with the way Peggy is treated. So she married a guy she loved, had his baby, was separated from her husband and child through her father's machinations (and it must be said--Mr. Russell is a literal robber baron but is framed as this loving husband and father who supports his daughter's dreams of marrying for love even against the wife he adores--for now--but the upper middle class, well off Black father is like... borderline villainous? Mmkay) then finds her baby, but he's dead now. Never mind her "romance" arc.
The way The Buccaneers handled this is why I never fucked with that show.
Georgiana was one of my favorites on Sanditon, and at first it felt like they'd do right by her. But then she was separated from Otis and used by an artist who only wanted her money, basically, and then tried to hurt her even more later. It's basically implied that she needs to cast off love and find happiness as a Strong Independent Black Woman, which like... Yes, we love to see strong Black women onscreen, but there's a strength that is required of them in order to downplay how much more they're suffering compared to their white counterparts, who get to have meltdowns and swoon and sigh in plotlines that are often far less agonizing than those experienced by their Black counterparts. Why shouldn't Georgiana be independent and get love, the way Charlotte (....supposedly) does?
And this is pervasive. White women are cast as romantic heroines, whereas love is less important for women of color; they're sidelined, they're either desexualized or sexualized in an exploitative fashion, and they often suffer physical and emotional abuse.
It's so ugly, dude. Even in Queen Charlotte, Charlotte finds love but we know it's doomed to suffering, and Lady Danbury suffers even more (which absolutely has a colorist streak imo) and has a brief liaison with a meh married guy who ultimately goes back to his white wife, and she never loves again because she's STRONG.
