Hob doesn’t know that he is one of few things in this world that has been Touched by Death and lived. Had he known this, he might not have been as confused as he is when his body slams into the floor of a dim, candle-lit cellar and he finds himself surrounded by hooded figures and a gold circle on the floor. That is all he manages to perceive before everything goes blurry and consciousness slips away from him again.

This little moment from ch.5 of “would you let me know? / I could make some time if you wanted” by @beatnikfreakiswriting has stuck with me for some unexplainable reason. Just them being dicks to each other (affectionately).

Dreamling Week: 7 Fic Recs

So I know I'm late to the Dreamling Week festivities, but I wanted to share 7 of my fav Dreaming fics and one shots to celebrate 6/7...even if I missed the actual date by a measly hour.

I tried to go into the way-back machine to find a few that haven't circulated much recently. And all of them are either one-shots or complete.

A Tam Lin one-shot that's a fun, quick read.

I seriously lol'd when reading this: Morpheus gets a bit high off of all the new dreamers after his imprisonment, goes to visit Hob and chaos ensues. The original one-shot this is an AU of is also equally hilarious. Whoever Anon is, they've got some great unfinished Dream x Hob works as well.

3. NoTP?

You know, I'm not entirely sure I have one in Sandman? I really haven't come across a dynamic where my brain automatically just went NOPE. The multi-shipper life is pretty great 😄

I do have one pretty big NoTP, and that's Klance from Voltron: Legendary Defender. This one is a big case of the fandom ruining the whole ship for me, and nearly ruining Tumblr overall for me. I've made my peace with the ship itself since the show ended, and I don't begrudge anyone who loves it, but I still get awfully twitchy when I see fanworks for it cross my dash. I had to blacklist it for a while but hardly see it anymore so I no longer have it filtered

5. Out of all your fanworks that include [character], which is your favourite?

Since you didn't specify a character, I'm gonna pick a random one! My favorite, The Corinthian! 😁

My favorite work that I've probably written with him as the focus character is probably A willing nightmare, a gilded cage. I love the idea of Dream and the Corinthian in a codependent, semi destructive relationship and this one was a lot of fun to write with a darker Dream.

7. Is there a piece of clothing you think [character] is particularly fond of/that you imagine them wearing a lot or like to draw them in?

For this question, I picked Hob!

I really like imagining Hob in brown leather jackets. Pretty sure I've mentioned it in at least two different fics. This is definitely related to his look in their reunion scene in 2022, and brown leather jackets are just so comfy. And Hob is just a comfy man in general I feel so he's gotta have the comfy jacket too.

9. Write a recommendation of someone else's fic you enjoyed!

This fic was absolutely phenomenal, and I actually just reread it recently. The fic is about how Dream remakes the Corinthian, and goes into great depth about how he wants to reshape his favorite creation into something truly perfect, while also giving him everything he wants. It's an amazing deep dive into what it really means for a creator to love his creation so deeply, and the power dynamics of it all are just *chef's kiss* Highly recommend it if you haven't read it already!

I received a free advanced copy of the book with the request for an honest review, so here is my honest review:

Omg omg omg I love this book so much!

I think the best part for me was Nico. As a nonbinary ace type person, you don’t really see yourself in romances (ever, I’ve never read a book like this before), and it was just so good and affirming! There are people out there who love people like me! It’s a possible thing! It might look like this! I don’t have to change who I am to find love and companionship! It was done so very well. It wasn’t all about the gender and sexuality, and it was never in spite of it. It was about the developing romance and how the characters fit together, like all good romances, and then it gave some lovely modelling for how to be sensitive and loving in various situations. The prose and plot were clear and flowed well, the secondary characters were amusing and often caricatured, and the humour was tender and vivid. I laughed out loud frequently! I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves romance, and particularly to ace or nonbinary people and their allies.

Imagine Werewolf Hob being a normal wolf and gets sent to a school for service dogs and he passed w with flying colours. His first owner? A young man who was a vampire but had chronic pains as well as PTSD from being kidnapped (his chronic illness was caused due to him being kidnapped by Burgess.) and Hob immediately falls in love with him as soon as he sees him.

Wonderful news, I ended up writing a mini fic for this whole AU! It's actually going to be a series where I'll explore things like Hob’s training, Dream’s recovery, and of course their developing relationship! The first fic is more of a slice of life/introduction type thing, but I hope it brings everyone some joy! You can find Good Dog on AO3 now!

just reread the wake recently for my own fic and came across this panel. which reminds me that Hob’s disastrous roadtrip from Hounds by @xx-vergil-xx is actually kinda canon compliant bc apparently he does have the tendency to want to run away to try and deal with grief of a loved one 😭

A lil bit of fan art

Reading @qqueenofhades’ The Unknown and Static Strange has overtaken my brain lately. So I just had to do my own tiny take on the illuminations she described. And it is pretty tiny: only 2x3”.

Image ID: Morpheus sits on a blue throne with his ruby around his neck and a raven on his shoulder against a field of blue lapis lazuli. He’s framed by a red border and “gold leaf” with gilt knot work interwoven with poppies. The illumination is labeled “Regis Somnorum” in blue gothic miniscules and gold/blue drop caps.

I tried to take as much inspiration from the Limbourg Brothers who are known for their sumptuous blues in their Book of Hours as I could. Lapis Lazuli was one of the most expensive pigments (if not the most). So despite red/black being Morpheus’ “thing”, I think they would have denoted his royalty with lots of blue. Poppies of course for the symbolism.

Overall, lots of fun to work in miniature after seeing some miniature illuminations at the art museum recently. If I could paint it again, I’d plan out the calligraphy better before painting to give enough space to have it all on one line.
