A Gentle Reminder Before Season 2 Drops…

Season 2 of The Sandman will drop on Netflix tomorrow (well, there’s an advance screening of the premiere today, help!) and I’m genuinely excited. But I wanted to share some thoughts (about supporting smaller creators, ship wars and mindfully engaging with each other in fandom spaces) I’ve been turning over in my head repeatedly over the last days. If that’s not your thing, scroll past…

I’ve been a fan of the Sandman comics for decades, and I love being part of fandom spaces. I genuinely believe in the power of community and supporting each other’s creativity. But I also remember how things got during Season 1 on here, and maybe there’s something to learn from that experience?

I think no one has the right to police what anyone enjoys. What happened last time: one particular pairing became (and still is) very dominant. This led to some pretty intense animosity, defensively arguing over (at their core) fairly valid points, and some things that made the fandom feel hostile for a lot of people:

People crept into the inboxes of other people who liked m/f pairings (f/f usually got away with it because it just gets mostly ignored) and got abuse hurled at them.

People who liked the big ship also got hostility thrown at them, and valid points about engaging with problematic tones of the source material got conflated with shipping as such.

Whole posts have been created that said a certain canon ship was “problematic” and “had run its course” to bolster the big ship (I mean, the whole point of a ship is that anything goes, and fix-it is a thing, no?), and pushback on that notion was wilfully misconstrued.

People who looked at things from a canon perspective constantly had their posts derailed to fit some ship narrative and eventually got pissy about it (myself included, no one’s without fault).

I’d love if we don’t repeat this pattern. We can like what we like without making others feel unwelcome for liking different things. We can also stay open-minded about discussion points without seeing them as an onslaught on our character.

Support Smaller Creators

Something that really stuck with me from Season 1 is that creators who weren’t interested in the big ship, or who weren’t focused on shipping at all, often felt unseen and unheard (some eventually gave up). When they expressed this, they were frequently brushed off with, “Well, just create what you want to see then.” Which was a bit silly really because… erm: they’re doing that?

So while that response is technically true, it somewhat also misses the point. The big ship pipeline takes care of itself—those creators get reblogs, engagement, and community support naturally. I mean, those numbers speak for themselves, and Death is fairly popular (it’s worse for other characters):

But smaller creators, people making art about other characters, writers of gen fic or meta not focused on ship-adjacent topics, different themes, or other relationships? They often struggle to find their audience. Not because it’s not there, but because of one main thing that seems small in the grand scheme of big ship content flooding the tags. But it’s a real issue for everything else:

**Likes don’t really help on Tumblr.**

This isn’t TikTok or Instagram. If you see something you enjoy (a piece of art featuring Despair, a meta about the comics, a fic about the Corinthian that isn’t shippy, a character study of Rose Walker):

Reblog it. Signal boost it. Help it find its people.

I’m genuinely excited about what Season 2 will bring us, and I love seeing this fandom’s creativity. I just hope we can be intentional about building a community where everyone feels welcome to contribute, and where we’re mindful of the fact that The Sandman isn’t just one thing. It’s a complex universe with so many characters and themes to explore. And I love that fandom reflects that breadth and depth. Maybe we can celebrate the popular stuff without letting it eclipse everything else? Support each other’s creativity, especially when it takes us off the beaten path?

I guess what I’m asking for is mindfulness. There are real people behind every piece of fanwork, and a little encouragement can go a long way.

I’ve always been a community builder at heart (I mean, I wouldn’t have started this if I weren’t), and I’d love everyone to think about the kind of fandom we all want to be part of. 🖤

And now I’m ready to cry about season 2 😩

📚Here is my list:

The "how to draw manga" series produced by Graphic-sha. These are for manga artist but they give great advice and information.

"Creating characters with personality" by Tom Bancroft. A great book that can help not just people who draw cartoons but also realistic ones. As it helps you with facial ques and how to make a character interesting.

"Albinus on anatomy" by Robert Beverly Hale and Terence Coyle. Great book to help someone learn basic anatomy.

"Artistic Anatomy" by Dr. Paul Richer and Robert Beverly Hale. A good book if you want to go further in-depth with anatomy.

"Directing the story" by Francis Glebas. A good book if you want to Story board or make comics.

"Animal Anatomy for Artists" by Eliot Goldfinger. A good book for if you want to draw animals or creatures.

"Constructive Anatomy: with almost 500 illustrations" by George B. Bridgman. A great book to help you block out shadows in your figures and see them in a more 3 diamantine way.

"Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and expand" by Burne Hogarth. A book that shows how to block out shapes and easily understand what you are looking out. When it comes to human subjects.

"An Atlas of animal anatomy for artist" by W. Ellenberger and H. Dittrich and H. Baum. This is another good one for people who want to draw animals or creatures.

Etherington Brothers, they make books and have a free blog with art tips.

As for Supplies, I recommend starting out cheap, buying Pencils and art paper at dollar tree or 5 below. For digital art, I recommend not starting with a screen art drawing tablet as they are more expensive.

For the Best art Tablet I recommend either Xp-pen, Bamboo or Huion. Some can range from about 40$ to the thousands.

Those are the ones I can recall.

So do with this information as you will but as you can tell there are ways to learn how to become an artist, without breaking the bank. The only thing that might be stopping YOU from using any of these things, is YOU.

I have made time to learn to draw and many artist have too. Either in-between working two jobs or taking care of your family and a job or regular school and chores. YOU just have to take the time or use some time management, it really doesn't take long to practice for like an hour or less. YOU also don't have to do it every day, just once or three times a week is fine.

lots of things to celebrate today... friday the thirteenth; the one year anniversary of my first complete sandman read-through (my sandmanniversary, if you will); and, of course, the fact that i am active in the fandom as @writing-for-life publishes the sequel to one of her loveliest fanfics.

needless to say, i can't put off posting this piece any longer, even though i do so wish to because i am actually the world's best (worst?) procrastinator. so here... woe, fanart be upon ye 💥💥💥 i drew thalia & morpheus based on the kiss by gustav klimt. it was kinda rough for me because i don't usually do things like this, but i'm happy that i tried :-) i hope that everything i intended for it to convey actually lands 🤞
