Still thinking about Naruto in the year of our lord 2024 so I was wondering what your take would be on a Sannin swap, meaning team seven has different mentally unstable mentors from canon so they can be traumatized/educated in new and exciting ways <3

I've written a few about the potential dynamics between Naruto/Orochimaru, Sasuke/Tsunade, and Sakura/Jiraiya, but let me tell you about the different iteration that really and truly is my favorite:

Sakura/Orochimaru

Mad scientist, came-from-nothing ninja with insane chakra control reporting for duty.

Orochimaru takes one look at this pink-haired freak with a puddle of chakra who thinks she can stand side-by-side with the kyuubi and the last of one of the great dojutsu and says, would you like to live deliciously?

And Sakura says, of course I would.

It is not enough for her to succeed, others must fail. And Orochimaru loves and appreciates this about her.

Sakura runs away from Konoha with the promise of having a mentor who will teach her, who will focus on her, who will believe that she's more than her pitiful background and more than her overwhelming teammates.

She is, at first, foisted onto Kabuto. She frightens Kabuto.

When she gets good enough to replace Kabuto, which happens in a very alarming two years (max), Kabuto suddenly gets to live with the ever-present threat of becoming an experiment.

Orochimaru adores her and encourages her to steal any and all clan techniques and kekkei genkai that she can. Why should she be barred from knowledge if she yearns for it?

Sakura is the most learned woman in the elemental nations. She has figured out Orochimaru's Body Problem. She's replicated the Strength of a Hundred seal Tsunade uses. They are a plague unto Konohagakure.

She's gene splicing like nobody's business.

The only people who care that Sakura up and left are Naruto, Kakashi, a bit of Sasuke, and Ino. Except for...well, no one has that manic desire to bring her back, the way Naruto did when Sasuke went missing nin. They kind of view her as a failed experiment, though Ino misses her and thinks of her a lot.

Sasuke/Jiraiya

Such a miserable duo, but they kind of like it.

Jiraiya is strong enough to keep Sasuke safe, and he keeps the kid out of Konoha, which he really needed.

Sasuke takes to everything quickly and antagonistically. Jiraiya hates having such a talented student - he is, perhaps, even more talented than Minato - who is so desperately antisocial.

You know that one post that's like, someone who's objectively attractive but has negative rizz? That's Sasuke, and Jiraiya despairs on the regular, because this student of his should, in theory, take over this position as horny spy master with the way he effortlessly draws in beautiful women who can act as informants. Sadly, due to his personality, no one would ever believe that Sasuke is just charming these (knowledgable) women into bed with him.

Sasuke takes to sealing, and Jiraiya is petrified that he's going to come up with something to, like, replenish his clan at an alarming rate.

Sasuke gets rid of his brother with some sort of homemade seal that traps him in a Matryoshka doll or something. He didn't technically commit fratricide, but Itachi is suffering in that thing.

He comes back to the village looking way better than he did when he left. Jiraiya takes that as his main point of pride.

Naruto/Tsunade

Naruto, should he learn chakra control, is the ideal healer in that he has more chakra than should fit in a human body, even an Uzumaki.

It's the chakra control that is Tsunade's true challenge in teaching. And, good god, is it a challenge. Sasuke is already murdering his brother by the time Naruto can reliably aid in a minor surgery.

But once he finally learns it, Naruto is improving in leaps and bounds, as is his way.

He completes a Strength of a Hundred seal six months after he finally learns chakra control. Sakura has had hers for two years, and he does not know or care.

Naruto is saving people at unprecedented rates. Honestly, Tsunade struggles to justify making him a combat medic, because he's doing so much good in the hospital just staying at the village.

Naruto is Naruto, though, so Tsunade teaches him to brawl using her style.

He winds up on the most dangerous missions, due to the fact that he has a natural healing ability with his Kyuubi, and is now the most talented healer Konoha has (who insists on getting out there).

Honestly, I could see him winding up in ANBU, given those skills and traits.

His true hardship, after mastering chakra control, is realizing that his talk-no-jutsu isn't going to work all the time and that he can't derail missions to attempt it.

Naruto is a better hokage for it, in the end.

Despite appearances, Orochimaru is Hokage here, but he’s not suuuuper keen about it hence the lack of the hat and only a minor sash to indicate his position. More info on the au here I guess, not really fleshed out or anything lol.

Soooo Naruto AU idea!

I’m dubbing it the pink toad AU

An AU in which instead of training under Tsunade, Sakura alongside Naruto becomes a stundent of Jiraya!

It’s a little influenced by @hellcifrogs and @orangelemonart ‘s Sannin Swap AU’s so please go check them out! They’re absolutely amazing!

This AU is still a work in progress, ideas are noted under the cut :)

- Everything canonly stays the same until the Search For Tsunade arc

- Instead of staying behind, Sakura insists on coming along to help find the female sannin

- To no ones suprised, she thinks Jiraya is werid at first lol

- Her and Tsunade 100% get off on the wrong foot. Sakura see’s Tsuna as a bitter, heartless alcoholic while Tsunade see’s Sakura as a spineless naive little girl

- Insert scene where Sakura yells at Tsunade about dreams and how she’s never gonna give up, not matter how weak, dumb or useless say she is

- That all changes however in the fight against Orochimaru and Kabuto. Sakura is understandably reluctant to go help becasue she’s still traumatized by what happened during the chunin exams. However she does set some traps and causes distractions in an effort to help. Though, it’s not until she see’s Orochimaru going for Naruto that she jumps in the way, similar to how she got in front of Sasuke

- Reacting in anger instead of fear, she just manages to get a good hit on the sannin. Orochimaru is impressed, but nonetheless like the ass he is, he slashes her with the blade, getting her in the face and throws her out of the way. The swipe thankfully misses her eyes, but it leaves a nasty scar, and the way she’s thrown causes her to split her lip

- Everything else goes the same, with Tsunade feeling even more determined by the two kids who gave her hope again, Shizune is tasked with taking care of both Naruto and Sakura, and after the second fight with Tsuna and Naruto they return to the village

- Sakura feels really insecure about her new scars, and is reluctant to let anyone see her as she’s ashamed and embarrassed. However, Jiraya is there to encourage and comfort her by telling her “there’s nothing more beautiful than a person that protects the people they care for.” This helps their awkward to relationship turn more sweet and friendly.

- Sakura’s admittedly wary and a little scared of Sasuke becasue all she can see is darkness in his eyes, they remind her too much of the eyes of Orochimaru. Therefore, she isn’t there to try and stop him when he leaves the village

- She however feels guilty and is very insistent on coming along for the Sasuke retrieval mission (still deciding who she helps fight against)

- After everything fails, she walks in on Naruto and Jiraya’s conversation and begs to come with them

- Tenten becomes Tsuande’s student instead and becomes a badass weaponist healer

- Sakura might still be a healer in this AU? She learned a few things from Tsuande, but she possibly learned more abilities while training with the toads

- Possible SakuTen? I like that ship

what is it with this fandom and the obsession with role reversals? do they not understand the story was written a certain way for a reason?

my biggest problem with role reversal is that it’s always done to expense of sasuke’s character lol. people that love these called role reversal completely disregard sasuke’s goals and his arc, they ignore that if you take these from sasuke you would simply strip sasuke from the character he is. i guess people take that naruto quote of being in each other’s shoes too heart but the point of this quote is to empathize that naruto understands sasuke. it doesn’t imply everything naruto does sasuke would do the exact same and vice versa. if it were that way then you would’ve the same exact story but sasuke would be called naruto and naruto would be called sasuke, you understand what i’m saying? and yeah the story is told exactly as it is for a reason

"sasuke," shisui reaches a hand out to where he knows sasuke is walking beside him, signaling for his little cousin to take it. he's much better at navigating than he was even a few months ago, but still needs the added balance as the terrain changes, to cross safely over uneven ground. they're running errands for tsuande. "what would you like us to make for dinner?"

Quiet with his eyes low to the ground, Sasuke wasn’t paying attention to his surroundings, occasionally bumping into the older boy next to him, sometimes the railing. A stray hand came into his sight and pulled his focus into place, his own smaller hand reaching to take it. 

“Oh, uh...” his voice no louder than a whisper. The wind threatening to steal his words from him. “Curry katsu is fine,” he tried to think of something less elementary that Lady Tsunade would also like.

He looked up to Shisui, forcing himself to look at his face. It sent minor pangs through his chest, but he told himself not to shy away from looking at his cousin. The nightmare still fresh in his mind, he fought with himself to face head-on these changes around him, including the unfamiliar hand of Shisui’s where Itachi’s once laid.

i know when people do a roleswap/sannin swap they usually have sasuke with tsunade, naruto with orochimaru, sakura with jiraiya. but these days i can't stop thinking about naruto helps tsunade avoid her work, sakura gets her phd in evil science, sasuke kills jiraiya

That anon talking about team 7 sannin swap AUs reminded me about that one artist that does that, and who I unfollowed bc they just kept not understanding the characters at all. Their art is very cute, and they are entitled to their own headcanons, but it's annoying when they keep putting down sasuke to elevate other characters they personally like more. They also had a AU where either the clan or just Itachi and Shisui(?) (I don't remember) were still alive, and sasuke felt bad, bc apparently he's just an average joe surrounded by geniuses. One of them being sakura of course, bc called booksmart once at 13 and her thinking highly of herself is enough. They only like the idea of her, but can't stand her how she is in canon, why else are they ignoring major parts of her. Her being an ass is the only thing that's kinda enjoyable about her, bc I knew girls like that when I was that age. Bullied girls that turned into worse bullies, who can be cruel and careless and so so conceited without anything to back it up. No they have to make her into the team mom bc she's the girl, and also they have to overcorrect her flaws, so they can't be accused of misogyny, but I think it's more misogynistic to act as if women are all little baby angels. Some girls are shitty, live with it. Sorry this got very long, but I missed your hot takes!

Genius who never makes a strategy and instead just keeps charging and punching things, and thus often ending up getting her ass handed to her.

Her fight with Ino in part 1 is a great example of this, Ino actually came up with a strategy while utilizing her ability, while Sakura did nothing except punch and talk trash. And of course, Sakura's entire performance in Kage Summit arc is infamous for how many stupid actions she could fit into one arc. She did every possibly thing wrong she could. And needed to be saved multiple times. And despite being a medic ninja, she couldn't even destroy one eye with a kunai. Some genius we have here...

As for her being a bully, I think Kishimoto knew some girl like her at school, because she just feels too real at times lol

ok but how about a sannin swap between sasuke and naruto but it isn't the conventional one. jiraiya is the rogue nin who wants to steal sasuke's body and orochimaru is the spy

Orochimaru is already a great spy and has many spies working for him as well including Kabuto. He always knows what's up somehow. And Jiraiya is already a... hm, well anyway do you mean how that would impact anything? I think if they just had each other's roles played by different characters then nothing much would change plot-wise? At least in this case, not so much with others.
