Jill Valentine stands alone outside the LAPD Pacific Branch Station looking north.
She sees Santa Monica Pier, a festive and joyous setting despite the recent disrepair, the famed terminus of the iconic Route 66.
Beyond it lie the Santa Monica Mountains, separating The Valley from Westside and the LA Basin. A National Recreation Area designated just about ten years ago, and one of the most visited places in the whole metropolitan area.
But Jill knows there's a darker side to those sunny mountains.
During the late interwar years and into early World War II the German-American Bund, an organization formed to drum up sympathy for 'New Germany' by recruiting Americans of German descent and converting them to National Socialism, operated out of those hills. Nazi spies were pulled directly from its ranks, and rumor has it there's an abandoned bunker still there left uncompleted after the ring was busted by Leon Lewis and the Los Angeles Jewish Community Council.
Jill knows there is. She's seen it with her own eyes.
In the 60s, the Santa Monica Mountains were also home to Spahn Ranch, the home base for the infamous 'Manson Family', and the location where they carried out the Tate-LaBlanca Murders in 1969.
Evil dwells in those hills even to this day, calling out to those foolish enough to heed its Siren's Call.
A girl from Malibu went missing in the Santa Monica Mountains about a year ago. Missing persons would usually be the purview of the police and search and rescue, but after they made no headway and started noticing suspicious activity on the San Fernando Valley side, concerns arose there was more to this disappearance and the case was handed over to the Special Tactics and Rescue Service, Los Angeles-Pacific Branch.
Intel would seem to indicate that now, the Nazis are back, and are using the site to conduct their own spin on the Umbrella Pharmaceuticals eugenics program. The missing girl, a perky blonde athlete and heiress name of Kara Stark who moved to Malibu from New York to take up competitive surfing, is exactly their type.
This makes it the concern of the International Bioterrorism Task Force as well.
Jill just stands on the beach and takes it all in as she waits for her comrades to fly in from Geneva and Raccoon.
After that, it'll be up to her and Captain O'Brian to lead them all into darkness.

Mu-Lost City of the Lemurians
On the western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, not too far from the beach houses of Malibu, lies what one researcher believers may be the most spectacular hidden archaeological site in North American.
Robert Stanley, a journalist and publisher of UNICUS magazine, has traveled around the world in search of ancient mysterious and lost ruins. But he never suspected that he’d find remnants of a lost world literally (almost) in his own backyard, on the slopes of these chaparral-covered mountains that bisect the Lost Angeles basin.
In 1985, Stanley was hiking through the Santa Monicas when he began to notice odd and unnatural-looking formations around Los Angeles-Ventura county line. He noted gulches that looked like sculpted ramparts, stone walls on rocky hills never occupied by house or livestock, and floorlike flat surfaces at the tops of windswept peaks. There were also a huge rock outcropping that resembled the outline of a human face staring out to the pacific, which Stanley dubbed the Sphinx.
Researching the history and lore of the area, Stanley found a local Chumash Indian legend of a “First People” who had lived in the mountains long before the Chumash arrived in around 3,000 B.C. The Chumash said that these mystery people were long gone, but some of their artifacts-crystalline sculptures of strange animals and the like-could be found in certain mountain caves. As with the Anasai ruins of the Southwest, the First People’s remnants were avoided by the local Indians.
What was most intriguing about the Chumash legend was the story of the First People’s demise. The Chumash claimed that the civilization had been called Mu and had been wiped out in a catastrophic flood. This exactly paralleled the legend of Lemuria, the Lost Continent of the Pacific.
Geologists and oceanographers believe that at the end of the last Ice Age, the Malibu sea level was at least two thousand feet lower than today. This would have made the Channel Islands a far-western extension of the Santa Monicas and allowed for a large lowland region-the Mu of the legend-to exist in what’s now the California coastal shelf of the Pacific Ocean. That prehistoric peoples lived in this area is beyond dispute. One of North America’s oldest human remains-the 13,000-year-old Channel Islands Woman-was found on Santa Rosa Island, twenty-five miles west of Malibu.
Stanley thinks that Mu’s lowlands were wiped out by the rising post-Ice Age sea levels. The higher regions of the civilization, whose traces he says still exist in the Santa Monicas, may have been destroyed by a tsunami-a fast-moving, powerful tidal wave. Such a wave would have devastated coastal hillside settlements and left countless tons of silt and debris in its wake.
Mu may be the California equivalent of the underwater archaeological sites like Japan’s Yonaguni, Egypt’s Alexandria, or Wisconsin’s Rock Lake. Robert Stanley has became an expert on the Mu site and has involved both professionals and laypeople in explorations of the area. However, he has not revealed the exact locations of the area’s most peculiar features, fearing their destruction by vandals or curiosity hunters.

It was finally time to drive back East. This was a bittersweet moment. On the one hand, I was excited to get back to my people. On the other, I was leaving a part of the world that had fully welcomed me and made me feel at home.
We drove through Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Maryland, and DC! On our way we were wowed by the geology in Utah, the beautiful valleys of Colorado, and the micropolises of Kansas!
I totaled 11 National Parks visited during my time out West, including 8 new parks, and not including 2 National Recreation Areas (Lake Mead and Santa Monica Mountains, neither should be missed).

Galer & Beckner Contractors (Photo taken by Rachel Hughes in Atwater Village neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA in November of 2023).
Tumblr media
They were listed at 447 W San Fernando Rd, Burbank under "Cement Contractors" in the 1922 Southwest Builder and Contractor (Volume 59, F. W. Dodge Company). In the same volume, we see that they were the builder of four 4-room dwellings at 4211-13 W Cumberland Ave for Mrs. Mary F Howe of 5311 Sunset Blvd. They also had a lien against Ida M. Randolph for a lot in the subdivision of Rancho Providencia and Scott Tract.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The best resource for this contracting firm is the "Burbank City Directory 1922" section of the San Fernando Valley City Directory 1922, with a very large number of classified listings in different related categories, including:
Contractors--Buildings
Contractors--Cement
Contractors--Concrete
Contractors--General
Contractors--Grading
Contractors--Road
Engineers--Civil
Engineers--Consulting
Engineers--Municipal (this one was listed twice for some reason)
Engineers--Structural
Surveyors
In the same directory were non-classified listings and included many people who worked for Galer & Beckner (the company itself was listed as Contractors and Engineers):
Fred G Beckner, married to Olive, lived at 629 Angeleno
John Booza, "lab" (maybe just 'laborer'?), lived in Glendale
L Ray Crum, cement worker
Arthur Esterbrook, foreman
John W Galer, married to Mabel, lived in Glendale
Emerson D Jones, "lab," lived in Los Angeles
Theo C Krigbaum, foreman, lived at Elizabeth Hotel
Jack C Truitt, truck driver, lived at Elizabeth Hotel
(Los Angeles Directory Company, 1922, accessed via the Los Angeles Public Library).
You'll see some say 447 W 2d and some say San Fernando Blvd. The illustrated ad above does "447 W. 2d (San Fernando Blvd.)" so I'm guessing we were in a transitional period here.
Tumblr media
A fun section in the directory is the not very secret listing of "Secret Societies."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It seems like Beckner had also done surveying work on his own. Here are three examples from "US Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management Field Notes of the Dependent Resurvey of a Portion of the West Boundary and a Portion of the Subdivisional Lines, the Subdivision of Sections 17 and 18, and the Metes-and-Bonds Survey of Certain National Park Service Tracts in Sections 17 and 18, Being a Portion of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Boundary, in Township 1 South, Range 18 West, of the San Bernardino Meridian in the State of California" <-- Wow that was a long title, the survey was 'executed by' Robert B. Fink and Richard S. Kaiser, cadastral surveyors, from January 24 - September 21, 1989.
Tumblr media
In 1909, Beckner wrote an about about himself in the alumni magazine of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity (Shield and Diamond, Volume 19).
(Turns out I did an early post on this firm also. Although it's much shorter, it includes some different information.)

King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas
Tumblr media
One of the most stunning locales in the Santa Monica Mountains, 588 acre King Gillette Ranch offers a rare unspoiled view of California’s rich archaeological, cultural, and historic resources. The property features a Chumash settlement, nationally significant structures designed for the tycoon of the Gillette razor blade, and an expansive landscape that includes a grand entry, serene pond, sweeping lawns, bridges and a historic Spanish Colonial Revival mansion, all set against a backdrop of the majestic Santa Monica Mountains.
The King Gillette Ranch is a popular destination for local residents and visitors. The scenic parkland is a haven for native wildlife and offers scenic hiking, birding, camping, picnicking and fishing.
Its 588 acres are a conservation area, and the ranch is managed by the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) as part of its overall management of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. MRCA collaborates with the National Park Service, Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, and the State of California to manage and preserve the lands of this important conservation area.
Among the many attractions on the Ranch is a visitor center which has a great collection of exhibits and information on local, regional and national parks and recreation areas. The visitor center also hosts a number of events and festivals throughout the year, including the Nights of the Jack Halloween event that takes place every fall.
There is also a hiking trail that leads up to Inspiration Point, which has a breathtaking view of the Santa Monica Mountains. The trail is an easy 1.5 mile loop hike that can be done in just a few minutes.
The visitor center is also home to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy’s art gallery. The organization, which promotes environmental awareness and education through the visual arts, organizes several art shows a year in both local and natural settings within the conservation area.
This art gallery has an extensive selection of paintings by artists who work in the surrounding area. The works of these artists have a wide range of styles and subject matter, from local landscapes to scenes of national parks.
You can also learn about the history of the conservation area and see what is being done to protect it from development. The conservation area is a protected natural resource and it is vital that the community understands and respects the area so that it can continue to flourish.
In addition to the museum and art gallery, the visitor center has a large library of books on the conservation area. It also provides information on local and national parks, conservation, and other related topics.
If you are interested in exploring the Santa Monica Mountains there is a great free map available that includes trails and other places of interest on the mountain. The map can be picked up at the visitor center.
There is a small path behind the visitor center that you can take to get a quick look at some of the surrounding parkland. There is also a hiking trail that connects the visitor center and the mansion which makes it a very fun day trip.
