Do you think though Luffy constantly misremembering names and being unable to recall any of the bad guys names is Oda saying don’t waste the brain cells trying to remember trolls like Buggy? I think the only villain Luffy remembers perfectly was Crocodile even then that had more to do with his affect on Vivi more then anything

Oda addresses this in an SBS, and Luffy only bothers to remember names of people he truly cares about, which in practice basically only includes his family and the Straw Hats. Even Crocodile isn’t totally exempt from this, as I recall @kaizokuou-ni-naru saying once that Luffy specifically uses the word for the animal crocodile when that’s not how his name is otherwise spelled.

I don’t have the writing chops to pull it off, but there exists in my mind a fanfic where Robin starts a physical relationship with Sanji shortly after joining the crew purely as a means of self preservation. Sanji realizes this is the case, but is entirely willing to be used if it makes her feel happy and safe, but Robin has no idea he knows. It’s not until the post Enies Lobby/Thriller Bark arcs when she hears about the Kalifa fight that she starts to cotton onto the fact there’s something Not Quite Right with Sanji, and then the time skip happens before she can act on this information. Where it’d go from there I have no idea, but I bet it’d be full of delicious angst

anyways. cowboy carter was a genuine masterclass not just bc its a good album but bc its a showcase of all the skill, talent, and drive that has gotten beyonce to where she is today. she should have gotten aoty ages ago but yknow what?? im glad she has it now at least

I love that Fellow is so expressive I love that his expressions are exaggerated I love how he frowns how he smiles how he gets angry I love his smug face I love the way his ears fall down when he's upset I love the way he moves his hands around I love his eye makeup and how it makes his orange eyes pop I love the fact he stitches up both his and Gino's outfits by himself using his talent in sewing I love that he's shown wearing glasses meaning he may be far-sighted

I love that he tries to help Gino with some letters and words despite not knowing much himself I love that it's so easy for him to understand Gino despite the boy being mute I love how it shows how easily they understand each other I love how he always asks for Gino’s opinion because he knows he can’t speak I love that he's so scared for Gino to gain possible false hopes about school and doesn't want him to feel the same disappointment and humiliation he once felt I love how he genuinely cares for him and considers him his younger brother despite not being blood-related and of different beastmen types

I love that he wants to live his life free and merry I love that he's genuinely one of the funniest characters I love that he manages to be so incredibly patient despite the NRC students getting on his nerves and his abusive boss constantly calling him and threatening him I love that despite not having pride he's still strong and capable to keep going until the end I love that he still clearly cares about children's education and the value of school and wants to somehow open his own one I love that it'll focus more on practical skills because he knows that regular schools don't do that I love that he basically said “fuck you” to his boss and blew up their whole fucking operation I love his signature spell and how despite it being weak his cunning and wit transforms it into a genuine threat

I love how he was able to win against the students I love how it showed how capable he truly is and that him changing his mind came from genuine self-refection and realisation and I love that Gino helped push him into the right direction and I love that he refused to come into NRC because being around those students would drive him insane I love it when he's unapologetically himself and doesn't need to suck up to higher ups I love it when he speaks his mind I love this man I love him so much I want to grab his face and bite it and pull the skin off I love him so much and sometimes I wonder what his life could have been like if only at least someone in his early life had helped and supported him to achieve his goals and

Which do you think smells worse, the boiling blood in level 4 or the dessicated corpse dust in level 3?

Level 4. I don’t think Level 3 smells like much outside half dead sweaty guys. Dust doesn’t have a smell, but blood and smoke definitely does.

The exception to this would be if there was an actual dead person in the process of being turned to dust. Rot just smells so bad, and being burnt to a Kentucky fried crisp would make that a non-issue. But all we saw in Level 3 were skeletons, and all those beasts on Level 2 have to eat something.

What do you think about the notion that character death is necessary to have tension and stakes in action-adventure stories with battles? I can understand both sides of the debate and don't have a conclusive opinion, but I'd really love to know your thoughts about it if you don't mind.

it’s not strictly necessary. A good author can come up with stakes other than life and death. I’ll use One Piece for an example, but Luffy vs Usopp was one of the most nerve wracking fights in the series and at no point did I think either character would die. Likewise I don’t think a character like Smoker would ever outright kill Luffy, but he’d sure like to throw him in prison. That can be plenty stressful. You can have a character in debt got on a treasure hunt, or have the protagonist save a friend from a bad situation that wouldn’t necessarily kill them. In the right hand these lower stakes can still have people on the edge of their seat.

What I take exception to are authors trying to have their cake and eat it too. If you present situations as deadly too many times without killing anyone you’re undermining your own sense of tension. To use One Piece again, because characters routinely survive things like fantasy nukes or getting struck with a million volts of lightning, I no longer believe Oda when there’s a cliffhanger of a character suffering a grievous wound that by all rights should kill them. I’ve been burned too many times before, so at most I will roll my eyes. That makes the rare exception where he does kill of characters come off as more bemusing than sad, which isn’t the reader response you typical want.

So yeah, you don’t need death, but if you’re not going to kill people don’t go out having them survive things like getting blown up or cut in half without laying out some serious groundwork first.
