LUNA PARK BECOMES WINTER HOT SPOT DESPITE DEMANDS TO DOWNSIZE

Earth, Ohio—It seems like only yesterday Junot Delgado, senior clerk at the mayor’s office, was sorting through stacks of mail from local citizens complaining about Luna Park, the biggest mobile and rocket home community in the city of Earth. The letters came at the behest of a national anti-rocket organization that campaigns for land protections and stricter rocket zoning in cities across America. The lobby provided residents with a prewritten message that outlined the effect of rocket landings on the ambient temperature and accused rocket fumes of causing cavities and lowering IQs, a long-debunked measure of intelligence that hasn’t been officially used since 2061.

News Planet independently reviewed the contents of the letter and found that many of the facts cited were inconclusive and at least two studies used had not been peer-reviewed in the traditional sense. Nevertheless, the message rang true for 3,022 of our neighbors, who began sending their letters to Junot Delgado at the mayor’s office on August 22 of this past year—a scorcher of a day. Readers may remember August 22 as the day the Landing Zone’s “Flying Egg Special,” i.e., eggs fried on the heat shields of recently landed rockets, launched. Junot Delgado remembers it as the day she walked into a stack of mail as tall as she was. She’s been receiving identical complaints ever since.

But now that we’re in the midst of a snowy winter here in Earth, Ohio, attitudes have apparently changed; increasingly, residents can be found enjoying afternoons in the common areas of the consistently warm rocket park, and Junot Delgado received no letters in the past month.

Ambient heat from spaceships, known as “Rocket Summers” in areas where rockets are concentrated, does have its drawbacks: heatwaves affect gardens and wildlife, and high temperatures can also be a headache for homeowners, who not only have to crank their superACs but also have to watch for bubbling or chipping paint, cracked wood siding, or shifting foundations—all risks of extreme heat on older buildings.

But when your driveway is buried in snow and slush and ice dams are growing on your roof, it’s hard to be mad at the passing rocket fire, which can disappear icicles and steam the ground on a close flyby. And it’s apparently hard to stay mad at Luna Park, too, whose rocket-heated pools and picnic areas have become incredibly popular—even among the grouchiest citizens.

“It’s a huge break for me,” says Delgado. “I’ll enjoy it while it lasts…”
