“Is Lee Chan, like, your work husband or something?” 

The look on Vernon’s face is perfectly innocent, but his arched eyebrow gives some indication of just how amused he is. You shoot him a scathing glare before turning back to your work-sanctioned laptop. 

You don’t answer Vernon’s question. Not at first, anyway. Instead, you opt to wryly ask, “Why do you always have to use his full government name whenever you’re talking about him?” 

“Eh. Just ‘Chan’ is too short,” Vernon responds noncommittally. He should be focusing on the grant that he has to write, but he seems intent on quizzing you on your relationship with the company’s newest program assistant. 

Vernon leans a little further into his computer chair. He’s always been a pretty amicable seatmate; he just liked to poke the bear every so often. 

“So?” he prompts. “Are you and Lee Chan… you know.” 

When Vernon makes a vague, crude gesture with his hands, you groan out loud. “Don’t make it weird,” you snap. “And no. Chan and I are just friends, asswipe.”

“But you guys display peak work spouse behavior.” 

“Aren’t you supposed to be grant writing?” 

“Aren’t you supposed to be getting your afternoon coffee with Mr. Program Assistant?” 

Vernon’s rebuttal has you glancing at the digital clock on your desk. Shit. 

“This doesn’t mean anything,” you say as you grab your wallet and get to your feet. You hate to admit it, but Vernon is right. You’ve started dedicating your fifteen-minute afternoon breaks to cafeteria trips with Chan. 

All in the name of friendship, you insist.

“‘Course it doesn’t,” Vernon sing-songs. Just when you think he’s done, he throws in a final jab. 

“I’ll have an itemized list of my observations,” he calls after your retreating back. “Just you wait!” 

You don’t turn around to dignify Vernon’s taunt with a response. Instead, you flip him off over your shoulder as you contemplate what coffee to get with Chan today.

Rarely are you late to work. Some mornings are just harrowing, littered with minor inconveniences like your alarm not going off or the bus making one too many stops. 

When you finally make it to the office, you can already imagine the CEO’s backhand comment about punctuality. Something like ‘early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable,’ probably. 

That’s why you feel an immense pang of relief when you notice a vacant seat near the back of the room, one that you undoubtedly know is yours. 

You make your way to the chair as discreetly as you can. The bag atop it is taken off the moment that you arrive, and you flash an appreciative grin at the one who made it possible. 

Chan— who is already shifting his bag onto his lap— gives you an exaggerated wink in return. 

You mouth a wordless ‘thank you’ at him. He doesn’t respond verbally, just smiles at you in that way that lights up a whole room. It’s the type of grin that has you forgetting just how bad of a morning you had; you’d lose yourself in it if weren’t for the ominous presence of Vernon a couple of seats down.

The meeting grabs your attention soon enough, but not before you notice Vernon inconspicuously typing something into his phone. 

☑ You always sit next to each other at meetings

“Who’re you texting?” 

“Hm?” 

“Hellooo! Pay attention to me!” 

There’s a guilty expression on your face as you finally glance up at Seungkwan. “Sorry,” you say meekly. “What were you asking?” 

Vernon lets out a huff of laughter at Seungkwan’s side. “I’ll bet a dollar that it’s Lee Chan,” says Vernon. 

Seungkwan responds with a roll of his eyes. “That’s a given.” 

“Yah,” you begin to protest, ready to justify the way you’ve only been half-present throughout your entire lunch break. 

Your attempt falls flat when your phone pings, and the screen lights up. 

One (1) new text from Channie. 🦖LOLOL I have the perfect reel for this!! Wait a minute~~ 💖💙

Seungkwan scoffs. Vernon snickers. 

Your eye twitches, and you shoot back a text underneath the table in a bid to avoid your friends’ teasing. 

☑ You message each other all day long

It’s hard not to laugh when Chan is looking at you like that. 

Despite the fact that there’s a whole brainstorming session going on— preparation for the company’s next fundraising event— the two of you can’t help your silent communication. 

Especially when Soonyoung starts running his mouth about the fundraiser potentially being tiger-themed. 

One glance is all it takes. Chan’s lips are drawn into a thin line, and you know he’s also trying his darndest not to laugh. It’s a mammoth effort to hold back yourself, but you manage— not wanting to suffer from your eccentric boss’ line of questioning. 

It’s all free game once the session ends, though. 

You make a beeline for Chan. He takes one look at your quirked lip before jerking his head towards the door, urging the two of you to have this discussion somewhere you won’t be lynched.

Still, you and Chan can barely resist your peals of laughter as you leave the meeting room with your heads bowed together. Vernon watches with bemusement as the two of you trade incoherent mumblings about Tigger and Pompompurin. 

Not that Vernon has any idea what those have to do with anything. 

☑ You exchange knowing glances from across the room ☑ You share inside jokes about work and life

“Hey, Lee Chan, where’s your work wife?” 

Chan doesn’t miss a beat. “She’s in a meeting with finance,” he answers without even looking up from his keyboard. 

A corner of Vernon’s lip twitches upward. Aha. 

Chan seems to pick up on Vernon’s smug silence. The younger boy’s head snaps up, his expression quickly becoming guarded. “Not my work wife,” Chan sputters. “Just— I knew where she was, okay?” 

“Riiight.” 

There’s a redness in the tips of Chan’s ears as he goes back to the Google Doc he’d been slaving away on. Vernon doesn’t say anything more, but he does feign like he’s texting someone instead of adding to his ever-growing list.

☑ Your other colleagues wonder where the other’s at when you’re not together

It’s a bit of an epilogue in its own right, how Chan is the one to know why you’re out for the morning.

The CEO had asked it mostly as a rhetorical question— has anyone seen her?— but Chan’s easy answer has the meeting coming to a stuttering halt. 

“She got stuck at her dentist’s appointment,” he says. 

Several pairs of eyes turn to Chan. The look on his face is comically caught.

He fumbles for his phone and waves it around awkwardly. “We were texting,” he adds hastily. “That’s why I know.” 

How that was supposed to help Chan’s case, Vernon has no idea. 

“Well, tell her that we hope she gets better soon,” the CEO says coolly. A corner of her lip is upturned, like she’s finding this entire interaction a little too amusing. 

Chan manages a mumbled “Will do.” 

The meeting pushes through. Vernon watches Chan from the corner of his eye. Aside from looking absolutely mortified, there’s just a bit of dullness to the latter’s demeanor. A slower uptake, a dimmer grin. 

Gee, Vernon muses as he types away on his laptop. Wonder why. 

☑ You’re kind of bummed when they’re out of office ☑ You cover for each other when one is MIA

Vernon’s running list is a fun little gig, but it all comes to head on the evening of the company’s monthly night out.

The table at the speakeasy is full of boisterous laughter and greasy finger food. Everyone’s in high spirits for the upcoming weekend, and Vernon has to hold back on teasing those who he thinks are having just a little too much fun. 

You and Chan have spent much of the evening acting like you’re in your own world. Sure, you’re not touching each other— this is technically a work event, after all— but you’ve shared laughter and whispers throughout the night that nobody else is privy to. 

And, alright, fine. Maybe your knees knock into each other more often than not. Maybe Chan puts a hand over your ear whenever he wants to point something out, and maybe you lean in just a little more than necessary. 

It’s obvious to anybody with two eyes that you two are fond of each other. That much is certain.

That’s what gives Vernon the boost of confidence to play wingman by the end of the night. 

“You know,” he says coolly as your group spills out onto the sidewalk. “I think the two of you live in the same neighborhood.” 

What Vernon is scheming is plain as day to you. You narrow your eyes at him, but he’s undeterred. He only smiles at you and Chan like the menace that he is. 

Chan, for his part, raises his eyebrows ever so slightly. He glances at you with a quizzical expression. 

“You’ve never mentioned that.” He raises his hand to his chest, as if feigning hurt at being kept in the dark. 

A snort of laughter escapes you. “Didn’t feel like it was particularly important information,” you say dryly. 

“Of course it’s important!” Chan’s always been a little louder when he’s drunk, so his voice raises an octave or two. “‘Cause that means we can carpool together, or, like, y’know—” 

Vernon interrupts with a sage, “You can probably book the same cab for tonight, actually. Make it a double stop.” 

Chan’s face lights up. “Great idea, man!” 

Before you can protest, Chan is already whipping out his phone to pull up his ride-hailing app. This is not a battle that you’re going to win. 

All the while, Vernon grins triumphantly. 

☑ You go home together after happy hour 

“Can we—” 

“Shhh. No, not yet.” 

“But nobody’s looking!”

“Wait until we’ve rounded the corner, idiot—” 

And so he does. 

But the moment the corner has been rounded, Chan is sagging against your side like he’s wanted to the entire night. “Oh, thank God,” your boyfriend sighs. “I didn’t think I’d survive another minute without touching you.” 

You can’t help the giggle that escapes you. The feeling is mutual, though, so you reach out to rest your hand on his knee.

“Commendable self-control tonight,” you note. “All the whispering was a little too obvious, though.” 

Chan huffs in protest, but the sound loses its edge as he cuddles up to you in the back of the cab. “No one suspects us. It’s just Vernon,” he complains. 

“And Seungkwan,” you say. “And Jeonghan, and Minghao, and Wonwoo—” 

Your boyfriend gives a dismissive wave of his hand. “Doesn’t matter.” His hand rests on top of yours, just barely resisting the urge to intertwine your fingers. “They don’t know a thing about us, sweets.” 

The smile threatening to fill your face finally breaks. When you laugh, your shoulders shake against Chan’s body. You’re not sure if he’s entirely right— you know of Vernon’s whole iPhone note, after all— but you’re willing to indulge your boyfriend if it makes him happy. 

“Yeah,” you concede. “They don’t know a thing.”

Android

cw: BBU?ish, Implied whumpee death, Kidnapping, Abuse and SA (none in detail), Organ harvesting. Android whumpee/whumper/bad caretaker- Reprogramming, The works. Alcohol mention.

Android 391, Unit 5. Its story begins when it is finally bought and taken away from its makers and trainers. Its initially bought as a blank.

Moderately pretty thing. Comes in a box, preprogrammed to do whatever is commanded... although it is well known that the basic program does have issues following longer commands.

You can of course purchase the additional programming for a.. small fee, of course, the main two being romantic or scientific. Just as advertised in the instruction manual.

The organization that has bought it is not all that different from where it came from- Their activities are aggressive and involve kidnapping. Most of the kidnappees are turned into pets either to sell back to the program it came from or personal use within their facilities and families.

A391U5 spent half of its time entering, capturing evaders, and destroying homes, majority of the other time carrying heavy things across camp, and the rest getting beers for the men and being used relentlessly for what his main purpose was: sex and abuse. It was... fun for it's masters to see how much it could do. A couple years later, a scientist joins the upper ranks, creating a science unit. They demand the android, and they are permitted to have primary ownership. A new program is installed with ease.. done just before it's warranty was up. They called it wonderful. Perfect. Something about those words pleased A391U5. It was doing good... Both great things in according to its program.

A391U5 could not say the same thing about the work it did. It wasn't... displeased, or disappointed, or dissatisfied, or.. anything like that. It wasn't allowed to be. It had checked. But, well, tearing apart fleshy-beings and harvesting organs.. mutating some beyond saving... testing endurance, strength, intelligence, and more... only able to answer their pleads for it to stop with “The pursuit of knowledge waits for no creature", per their instructions.

A391U5 wasn't until it met Am[ERROR]-... Subject 482 it began to use its vast scientific knowledge to wonder how it might keep these pets alive a little longer. Subject 482, female, liked to treat it as if it were... human. Thanking it for feeding them all timingly. For administering medication to the youngest in Unit 480. Fixing minor issues in it's body, to the other's dissaproval. Subject 482 understood the wonder of such and invention of this android, it had declared. Telling it they knew "he" had to hurt them. That is wasn't "his" fault.

At the time, A391U5 did not understand. For one thing, it wasn't sure they were referring to it. It was not a "He". Not a "him" or "his"- surely these fragile beings knew full well it was an android. Additionally, it was clearly marked A391U5 and explained to them time and time again it stood for Android 391- Unit 5, not "Aegius". But any time they'd say it, no one else was around but the numbers and itself.

It was two thirds of a year of this nonsense- likely caused by their injuries and such, it was sure. Unit 480 dwindled down from 10 to 6 before they were able to escape. At first they asked Aegius it to go with them.

It.. couldn't help what it did to the first one who tried to drag it away. Blood splattered against their cage.

"Subject 487, male. Elimination estimation without care.. one hour. Reason: Bloodloss. Unit 480, please surrender yourselves and prepare for transport."

Unit 480 was horrified. Subject 482 still moved to him.. slowly. It didn't remember how it really went down. Shame, it's favorite (had it been permitted!) had to be eliminated....

It woke up in a place far away from what it had knew since it turned on. Some of its physical system had been damaged. This new programming, horribly shoved into it's usb port for such things, was malfunctioning. It wouldnt load properly. He could see it was a romantic file.. did subject 482 not know its old coding must be removed before it may be reprogrammed..? It had no need to keep its science memory module if it were to be used as a romantic now..

It certainly still wanted to be good for it's master. Both programs overlapped in that sense. Awkwardly, it shifted onto its knees and hands, crawling head down to its new master, subject 482. She was bleeding alot.. It was struggling to fill in the holes of what to do. Finding nothing useful about a bleeding master in its new programming, it searched over its old programming... using fire to seal up the wounds.

Familiar it was how Subject 482 screamed...

It was almost... comforting. It curled up on Subject 482 once it had roughly fixed the unit as it always had, letting out a small cooing noise. Shoving some of the protein pellets it had left over into her mouth. Its new programming said it may please its Owner. It sure hoped so... Keeping them all safe was the objective that made the most sense. Pleasing it was part of keeping them safe, right-?

It allowed Unit 480 and itself to be picked up by an unknown unit when it announced that they knew them. That they were being taken home.

suite listened to the radar targeting frequencies for the missiles from the missiles. There were EW antennas throughout the SR 71. Even at three times the speed of sound, The antennas would pick up the radar pulse.

The SR 71 had a very clever deception jammer. The system received a tracking radar pulse, fiddled with it, and returned it. The returning pulse was just a little stronger. The enemy would be tracking the SR 71 and would find the location, but it was FALSE. The deception jammer had drawn the trackers away from the real SR 71. The enemy thought they were tracking, and in some instances, they felt they had a straightforward kill.

But the real SR 71 was far, far away. This interests me because my father, Colonel Richard “Butch” Sheffield, and Bob Spencer collected the SA 5 radar frequency in 1971. The SR-71 was soon after this risky flight (within a few feet of Russia) able to jam the SA 5.

The other reason for the early cancellation of the SR 71 was that one of the Generals were jealous because they he was rejected from the SR 71 program before they were made General. There was only a one to 2% acceptance rate for pilots. They were so vindictive that they did not promote Lieutenant Colonels to full Colonels who deserved it. They demanded that the special orange flight suit be taken away from the SR 71 Crewmembers.. it was unprofessional and wrong what the Generals did at the Pentagon. This is the information given to me by the pilots and RSOs who flew the SR 71.

Between the jamming system, the speed, and the altitude, I believe there was no chance of a shootdown. Of course, there could’ve been one million lucky shots, but that never occurred.

Life is feeling so sturdy. I’ve got my preferred schedule and courses. I’m taking comms, geology, sas, and politics. Hoping to get a cute little job with sweetheart staff. Join a club or two. Maybe take a program. It sounds like a lot, I mean it is a lot. But what else would I be doing. If I don’t complete my goals someone else will. And they’ll do it with half as much passion. Iron Ascetic, the origins of Yuno

This should be airing a few days after the Masters 8 Quarter Finals, and the morning before the Semi Finals. During those matches, Arlene Sachlett stole the show with a surprising win against Leon, who was otherwise expected to make it to the finals if not win the tournament outright. Sachlett's team is full of anomalies, but the strangest member of her team is her ace, Yuno the supposed "Iron Valiant". If you're new here read my previous blogs for more context on that.

I watched the quarter finals alongside Star, another Iron Valiant on the team of my friend Samuel from Paldea. Unlike Yuno, Sachlett's ace, Star is a more typical member of their species. We posted some live commentary on the quarter finals live over on chatter, but I will paraphrase star's comments here:

Yuno is far more organic than any Iron Valiant, and has vastly different powers. He is not a member of the species, but is most likely a Gardevoir or Gallade who received mechanical augmentation. While I'm not sure how exactly that's different, their testimony indicated that Yuno may not be a paradox at all.

My previous research into Yuno, operating on the assumptions that he was indeed a paradox, just turned up dead ends, but following this, I changed my search terms a bit and I think I now understand exactly how Sachlett and Yuno got to this point.

Here are my findings in a rough chronological order:

Sachlett has held the Champion position between 2019 and 2021, and then subsequently from 2023 onward to the present. Aside from her competitive duties, she is a PHD student in the University of Kamelai Coastal school of Engineering, and has been involved on a research project for longer than she has held the champion position. This project is called the Ascetic program, and is where her Magearna was constructed.

In lieu of summarizing it myself, here is the project's page from the internet archive, dated November 2020.

Note her name in the student researchers category.

This is something Sachlett has been quite public about of course, but when looking at further information from the project. I found this photo.

The Gardevoir on the right is clearly Yuno, but without any mechanical augmentation. This seemingly confirms Star's hypothesis about his origins. He is listed as a researcher and testing head for the new technologies being prototyped by the ascetic project, which following the new Magearna replication, included far more advanced fields.

Listed subjects included Nanotechnology, High output power Generation, Brain Computer Interfaces, and Precise timepieces. Yuno's psychic abilities apparently made him excellent at controlling the tech, and providing some of the power for it to function, but his eventual enhancement still appears entirely unplanned at this stage.

Until the incident in June.

This was the year before I moved to Kamelai, and had heard about it only in passing from the news stories, and from seeing construction projects in the cities in the north replacing buildings which had burnt down.

Unlike the previous cases, this emergence did not coincide with Kyogre awakening in the same location (instead it appeared near distant islands in the south pacific), meaning that instead of directing their wrath against each other (allowing for easy intervention by Rayquaza), Groudon was free to rampage without its counterpart opposing it.

Instead, opposition was mounted from the Armed Forces and multiple volunteer disaster response teams composed of the toughest competitive trainers the region had to offer. Sachlett was a member of one of those response teams.

Over 1000 people and pokemon engaged Groudon in order to keep it away from the cities. They eventually succeeded, but of those 1000, there were 787 casualties of varying severity.

What follows next is speculation that I cannot yet conclusively confirm, however it seems to be the most plausible turn of events.

With their combat effectiveness, Sachlett and her team would have been assigned to the frontlines of the response, meaning they would be directly fighting against Groudon.

To demonstrate the danger of that, here's an image from the 2011 emergence.

Shortly following this event, the most recent update on the Ascetic project was posted. It does not go into detail, only that the technologies from the project were applied in the field of lifesaving medical treatment.

And now a few years later, Yuno reappears in the competitive scene, back as Sachlett's ace and in his new cybernetic glory.

This information in aggregate points towards one conclusion. During the fight against Groudon, Yuno was critically injured, and the technology created by the Ascetic project was used to keep him alive and restore his ability.

And the rest, is history.

The question is now, why have the WCS officials not been aware of this. Yuno has more in common with other artificial superweapon pokemon like Mewtwo, Silvally, or Genesect and should definitely have been a restricted mon requiring special registration.

I reached out to WCS admin about this, and have only received a generic response. Apparently multiple other people have already made this connection since the start of the masters 8 and "an investigation is ongoing".
