My Little Monster (となりの怪物くん, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun), penned and illustrated by Robico, is a charming Japanese manga that delves into the complexities of high school relationships. Serialized in Kodansha’s Dessert magazine from August 23, 2008, to June 24, 2013, this manga also saw an anime adaptation in 2012, brought to life by Brain's Base and available for streaming on Crunchyroll.

Plot Overview

The story revolves around Shizuku Mizutani, a studious high schooler with a singular focus on her academic and career goals, and Haru Yoshida, a classmate known for his unpredictable behavior and chronic school absences. Their worlds collide when Shizuku is assigned to deliver class materials to Haru’s home. What starts as a simple task turns into a surprising friendship, with Haru warmly embracing Shizuku as his first real friend.

Shizuku, often referred to as “dry ice” for her cold demeanor, begins to thaw out as Haru’s genuine kindness and naive approach to relationships slowly break down her emotional barriers. Despite his reputation as a troublemaker, Haru’s affectionate and genuine nature begins to change Shizuku’s perspective on life and love.

Main Characters

Shizuku Mizutani: A high-achieving girl who initially has no interest in anything beyond her studies. Her interactions with Haru start to awaken her emotions and lead her to question her own feelings and desires.

Haru Yoshida: A misunderstood delinquent who, despite his rough exterior and tumultuous school history, shows deep affection and care for Shizuku, eventually confessing his love and helping her open up emotionally.

Supporting Cast

Mitsuyoshi Misawa (Mitchan): Haru’s supportive cousin who runs a batting cage center and becomes a key figure in Asako’s life.

Kenji Yamaguchi (Yamaken): A wealthy classmate of Shizuku’s who offers relationship advice but struggles with his own feelings for her.

Asako Natsume: Shizuku’s first real friend, who navigates her own romantic feelings while supporting Shizuku.

Sōhei Sasahara (Sasayan): A popular baseball player with a straightforward attitude, who also harbors feelings for Asako.

Media and Release

The manga was compiled into 12 tankōbon volumes, with the final volume including a special OVA bundled with the release. Kodansha USA has licensed the series for North American readers, starting with the first volume released on March 11, 2014. A spin-off manga continued the story, published from August to November 2013, and collected into a 13th volume.

Day 25: Natsume x Sasayan

I've read the manga and I really shipped them more than the main duo. They can be seen interacting together in the manga, not that often in the anime though (or I wasn't searching enough screencaps for them). I think Sasahara did have a crush on Natsume for a very long time but just went with the flow of their growing friendship. He even supported her when she planned to confess to her crush and even comforted her when she was rejected. The manga did not tell us that they were together in the end but I guess it was implied.
