Things Get Better?: LGBTQ Representation in Animation in 2022 [Part 2]

In 2022, there was a plethora of LGBTQ characters in Western animation, from gay warriors Orc and Iago in Battle Kitty to a lesbian drama teacher in Dee Dee Holloway in Big Nate. Other series featured gay couples (as in Baymax!), gay and lesbian parents (as in Firebuds), and many other lesbian, bisexual, non-binary, and queer characters. [3]

Some series had more representation than others. One of these was The Legend of Vox Machina, airing on Amazon Prime and based on the Critical Role roleplaying podcast, which featured lesbian, bisexual, and queer characters, specifically Vex'ahlia "Vex" de Rolo, Vax'ildan "Vax" Vessar, Lady Kima, Keyleth of the Air Ashari, Scanlan Shorthalt, and Lady Allura Vysoren. Stephanie Beatriz, a bisexual actress, voiced two of these characters: Lady Kima and Lady Allura. In addition, there were was a reboot of Monster High which premiered on Nickelodeon in fall 2022, with more gender diversity and LGBTQ characters, such as a non-binary monster named Frankie Stein and two lesbian moms (Medusa and Lyra).
Just as powerful was the reboot of The Proud Family in a series named The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. It aired on Disney+ from February to April of 2022. Created by the same person as the original, Bruce W. Smith, it includes three gay characters: Randall Leibowitz-Jenkins, Barry Leibowitz-Jenkins, and Michael Collins. There were also one-time lesbian characters and queer vibes among other characters, who are part of the show's mostly Black cast.
One of these characters is Maya, a 14-year-old anti-racist activist voiced by Keke Palmer. Although Palmer is an actress who has described herself as sexually fluid and queer, it remains to be seen whether Maya will be "sexually fluid and queer as much as Palmer is in real-life."
This was followed, later in 2022, by the much-expected Dead End: Paranormal Park, which Netflix recently cancelled. This series broke barriers as the first animated series with a trans protagonist named Barney Guttman. He is voiced by a trans male actor, Zach Barack. The show also includes Norma Khan who likes multiple genders and is ambiguously queer, and Courtney, who is non-binary. This series goes beyond the barrier-breaking of High Guardian Spice, a series by a trans male creator, Raye Rodriguez, who voiced one of the show's characters (Caraway), or the trans male lead character in Wendell & Wild (Raúl Cocolotl), who was said to be the first trans man in an animated film.
2022 heralded the end of the much-beloved Disney series, Amphibia. The series featured LGBTQ characters who were confirmed after the show's finale, like bisexual Sasha Waybright, voiced by bisexual actress Anna Akana. There's also Mr. X, Frodrick Toadstool, and Toadie who are gay, Yunan and Lady Olivia who are lesbian, Ally who is pansexual, and Jess who is bisexual.

Hello, I’m looking to do an Amphibia roleplay and have been looking for someone to play Sasha Waybright for a while now.
I am very interested in playing Marcy as an age regressor. For me, it fits with her anxiety issues, and is a form of escapism. And although “Little Marcy” doesn’t always know the correct words to accurately communicate, being little also helps her express herself. Certain stressful situations can trigger her into her little headspace, and other times it’s just a comforting way to decompress and be loved as a child. So I’m looking for a Sasha RPer that is okay with this and actually wants to play it out. I need a Sasha that wants to love, spoil, and comfort Marcy when she regresses. I usually prefer to have both Sasha AND Anne to be Little Marcy’s caregivers, so if you know how to play as BOTH of them that would be an ABSOLUTE BONUS!!! But not a requirement!
I would also still RP Marcy at her actual age, so she WOULD NOT be in her age regressed little headspace all the time.
🕊 I also like petplay! I would love to occasionally have Marcy be Sasha’s puppy. I don’t think this one requires me to really go into detail, but if you have questions feel free to like this post and I will message you. You can occasionally play Sasha as trans fem as well, if that interests you. One more specific kink, my Marcy is very interested in receiving the most filthy but loving dirty talk. We can discuss her several other kinks IF you have a real interest in doing the rp with me.
I love Sasha’s pre redemption attitude, so bossy season 1&2 Sasha is more than welcome! I’m looking to establish a D/s relationship between them, with Marcy being her collared sub, so I would like Sasha to be VERY dominant. I’m interested in BDSM themes and would like for smut to be heavily involved along with aftercare. I like very dark and serious taboo plots, but I love fluff as well! This RP wouldn’t be just sex for them, so I would like for Sasha to also be genuinely loving and caring towards Marcy. I wouldn’t mind that being a beginning plot for them though, starting as fwb and gradually falling in love.
Anyone who may be interested, please be AT LEAST 18 years old, literate, open minded, active, and good with communicating ooc. Sasha, what would you do for your thirteen-year-old self if you were her therapist?
God, I needed some real help. I had a lot of unresolved divorce shit that was seeping into every area of my life and I didn't recognize it. I was going though a lot of anger issues at that time but I couldn't make the connection to things that had happened to me so I thought I was a monster, which obviously made everything worse. I did some soul searching in Amphibia so I was a little calmer by the time I was fourteen, but it shouldn't have taken a literal war for me to get to that point. And it still took years for me to realize how much the divorce had messed with me and start moving forward from that.
I do a lot of therapy for children of divorce now. It affects everyone differently but it really fucks kids up. My life would probably be completely different if I hadn't gone through that. I'm proud of who I am today, but it ruined a lot of my childhood and it still affects me. If I can help people get help earlier, I'm happy with that. I prefer not to spend time regretting the past.

I'm taken, but I'm flattered. Diet and exercise. And no, I'm not saying don't eat. Food is fuel for your body. Regular strenuous exercise will make you naturally crave healthier food.

I missed your posts, Sasha. I follow this blog for all three of you, even though I understand that you were sick and that  you don't like social media that much. I'm glad that you're posting again. What's your workout routine?
Hey, thank you for sending this. It means a lot to know someone's interested in seeing my posts. Marcy always says good things about you, so it's good to know you live up to that.
I don't want to share my exact routine since I've been training strength for about ten years and doing different sports for most of my life, so I don't want anyone trying to push themselves to do what I do. It's important to slowly work up to more intense activity or you could seriously injure yourself. Working out also involves a lot more than just being at the gym. It's about building healthy habits for all areas of your life including eating and sleeping. When you do more physical activity, your body should begin to crave these positive changes naturally but it's important to stay on top of things.
This is a rough overview of what I do in a day with some advice for how to train if you want to build strength.
I train for around an hour and a half almost every day before I go into work. I'll eat something small in the early morning like a protein bar or shake before going to the gym with a more substantial breakfast afterwards that could include eggs, yogurt, beans, vegetables, etc.
It's important to train different muscle groups each day so I rotate between leg, arm, core, back, and full body workouts. I recommend looking up beginner exercises if you're just starting out. You don't want to immediately jump into heavy deadlifts just because it looks impressive. If you don't have a training partner or coach, you should also look up what the proper form and technique looks like for each exercise you do. YouTube videos are the most helpful to get a visual representation.
These are a few exercises that I do for each area: Legs: Deadlifts, squats, leg extensions, leg presses Arms: Pushups, chin-ups, bicep curls, front raises Core: Planks, crunches, Russian twists, in and outs, bridges Back: Lateral pulldowns, rows, pull-ups
You want to find the number of sets and reps that work best for your body for each exercise and make sure to rest both between sets and between different exercises. A rep is one action, like a bicep curl. A set is the number of those that you do in a row. For example, if you were doing 3 sets of 10 reps of an exercise, you'd do 10 exercises in a row, rest for about 3 minutes, then repeat that twice more. You should feel like you're pushing yourself slightly past what's comfortable. Adequate rest is crucial because otherwise you'll start to tire yourself out and risk doing exercises improperly which can lead to injury.
After working out, I listen to my body throughout the day and eat when I'm hungry, focusing on protein-rich and healthy foods. If I'm craving something sweet, for example, I'll usually reach for Greek yogurt over a cookie. I find that I crave unhealthy foods less than I used to but there's nothing wrong with treating yourself occasionally. Depriving yourself of things that bring you joy can really damage your psyche and make you less motivated. I hate when people use the word “cheat day” for eating foods they enjoy. There is no cheating in balancing your diet.
If I'm feeling very fired up or stressed, I might go to the gym after work for a half hour or so to do some cardio work. Anne usually cooks dinner and she helps with including lean meats, fish, beans, whole grains and rice, and plenty of vegetables as much as possible. I sleep from about 9:30 PM to 5:30 AM to wake up feeling refreshed and ready for another day.
Since I'm very experienced, I work out five days a week, but if you're new to strength training I recommend starting with three days a week and working your way up to four. Taking rest days is extremely important. I take mine on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I might do some light exercise on those days like playing tennis or racquetball with Anne, but I also take those days to actually rest and recover. It might seem like training every day will make you stronger, but your muscles actually strengthen more during rest days. It sounds disgusting, but strength training creates small tears in the muscles you're working. Resting allows those tears to repair themselves and that's how your muscles grow stronger and increase in size.
I also recommend mixing in exercise that you personally enjoy doing. Training is repetitive by nature and it can get boring. Some days, I don't go to the gym at all. I've gotten into surfing, and I practice sword fighting with Anne even though it's an impractical skill here. This kind of exercise lets me see the rewards of my training and it's also just fun for me.
Even if you were just asking for curiosity's sake, I hope this advice is helpful. Taking even a small first step towards better fitness can make a huge difference for your quality of life in all areas. I'd be happy to talk about this more anytime.
