Source (Season 2 - December 1st 2024)
megsetdec: An affectionate look back on the crazed & cluttered living room set of Anne and Mary’s living room from #ofmd s2. The characters in the show are loosely based on real life characters Mary Read and Anne Bonny, who in real life were close friends and kindred spirits who met aboard Captain Rackham’s ship. They both spent much of their youth dressed as boys and had abandoned societal expectations to become pirates. Some historians believe they were lovers. In our story Anne (Minnie Driver) has set up shop as an antique dealer and after an unexpected reunion between Mary (Rachael House) & Blackbeard (aka Taika), we find these three & Stede (Rhys Darby) all thrown together into the living room behind the antique shop where a bit of sensual stabbing goes down and the boys are invited to stay for uncooked rabbits liver dinner. The set was a large room in a historic house so our location was incredibly sensitive with the restrictions of not being able to screw or stick anything down. We built the set with layers & depth, cable ties & scaff tube and smoke & mirrors. The set needed to convey the psychological madness of the relationship between Anne & Mary which we did through a lens of 18th C hoarders and by engaging an uncomfortable colour palette of salmon and chartreuse green. Also using double layers of poofy silk drapes created by @stitchninja & team. Once the crew arrived you can imagine the cluster with techs having to carefully navigate their gear in a sensitive historic home amongst psycho collections of hired antiques & furniture. Much fun was had by all!! 2nd to last pic shows the location before we started our dress. Super fun set on a super great show. More lady pirates please!! 🙏🏽🏴‍☠️🖤

Morgause through time (movies, tv shows, opera and musicals)
1999 Excalibur kid (played by Francesca Scorsone): My favorite Morgause, here for the first time she is a co-protagonist and the main antagonist of a movie. In this re-interpretation of Connecticut Yankee, Morgause decides to bypass Arthur and use her magic to call a modern day guy into arthurian times, let him take the sword from the stone and become king... much easier to manipulate a fish out of water than Arthur himself! She is quite funny too through the movie. She also can use magic.
2001 The Mists of Avalon (played by Joan Allen): Directly adapted from the novels, Morgause takes the classic role of witch, Arthur's half sister, Morgana's ally and antagonist. In this miniseries, Morgause also raises Mordred like her son, and raises him to be ready to take power from Guinevere and Arthur, back to her family.
2005 Kaamelott (played by Anouk Grinberg as Anna de Tintagel): In Kaamelott, Anna is a very secondary characters who only appears in a few episodes. She is introduced as Arthur's half sister, married to Lot and desiring Arthur's death more than anything else. She seems to have a long term plan to destroy Arthur, and it is not clear if she actually conceived Mordred with him and this will come out in the new movie, or if it was simply a reference to Morte d'arthur.
2008 Merlin (played by Emilia Fox): Morgause is a warrior and magic user, daughter of Gorlois and Vivienne and half sister of Morgana. She appears in the show to tell Arthur and Morgana the truth about Uther's cruelty and their families. Later on, she works alongside Morgana to destroy Uther and conquer Camelot, allowing magic users to finally be free.
2018 Arthur et les enfants de la Table Ronde (voiced by Barbara Scaff in the French original version): Morgause is one of the two Tintagel sisters (the other being Igraine) who are the main antagonists of this animated show. She is kind of goofy and a bit of a lackey to her sister Igraine. Together with their cousin Mordred they want to take power from Uther as they believe themselves the true inheritors of the Pendragon line.
I found it pretty interesting that Morgause was eliminated pretty quickly from arthurian movies. If we look at a chronological list of movies and tv shows (ex. this one) we can see how her role was absorbed by Morgana.
In 1960 we have the musical Camelot (adaptation of White's Oafk) which still retains Morgause as Mordred's mother. Morgause does not appear, but she is mentioned, while Morgana appears in one scene. This is the first time we have Mordred presented as Arthur's relative, and probably the big turnaround that finally allows Mordred to appears in movies as Arthur's illegitime son. In the BBC "The Legend of King Arthur" (1979) Morgause is also Mordred's mother, but does not appear - we have instead Morgana.
"Mists of Avalon" retains Morgause as Mordred mother by allowing her to adopt him after Morgana gave birth to him. This will be the last time she will appear as his mother.
I suspect since "Excalibur" (1981) was such a success, it was just easier for movies to add the much more active Morgana (often also taking the role of Nimue) instead of Morgause, and to merge the two together to enrich Morgana's character even more.
In general, for the few times Morgause actually appears, she seems to take the role of antagonist, I suspect almost "stealing" it from Morgana often to allow Morgana to be more sympathetic. In "Excalibur kid" she acts as a witch, effectively taking the role often given to Morgana but her actress is quite fun and the movie light enough that she still manages to avoid the evil cliches, in "Mists of Avalon" she is also one of the main antagonists and is not presented in a sympathetic light.
"Kaamelott" then has, in my opinion, the most interesting adaptation of Morgause. She hates Arthur, but the scenes where she expresses her hatred also shows her so filled with despair and emotions, and many of her appearances leaves an almost unease and enigmatic feeling (or at least they did in me!).
In 2008 ("Merlin") we go back to almost a cliche villain Morgause. While her cause does have merit, Merlin BBC never did a good job in managing the oppression of magic users vs what ways and means of resistance were considered allowed by the morality of the shows. We have Morgana, Morgause and many other magic users who are oppressed cruelly, and yet are only introduced as villains and often taken to the extreme in their actions or just "smirking like a villain" scenes.
And finally we get to the 2018 French animated series, which full turns Morgause into a comedic villain.
A small note: I was quite sad to see that Morgana has taken Morgause's role with so much success than even in the 2021's "The Green Knight" Gawain's mother is Morgana herself.

Saw a post of something like "Millennials LOVE to have all their furniture look like reclaimed industrial somethings" and I have had the horrible realisation that, that looks like such an affectation now because it's no longer the cheap way to do things.
As in, in my first squat (back when residential was still not a crime!) we built all of the furniture- The kitchen racking was made from cut-down scaff poles, clamps and duckboard all taken away from a jobsite when it had failed safety checks. The coffee table and a couple of workbenches were made from pallets, and the bookshelves were all wine boxes held together with bulldog clips, taken from a restaurant one of us worked at. My bedside table (that I still use) was two tins from an industrial autoclave, from the place I worked at, and we painted the floor with red oxide grippy primer. It looked rough, but also great, especially once we had a few layers of posters on the walls (again, largely posters taken from flyposting jobs we had done, back when flyposters just went up randomly on buildings rather than on fake urinals!)
Obviously, the chain coffee shops and gyms and high-concept Street Food Venues were never really doing it, but they were mimicking a very real thing that existed and was a frugal way of living.
But now, doing all of that would be more effort and more money than buying something off temu or a dropshipper for a couple of pounds- I looked at the same kind of wine crate as we used to get for free, and they're around £12 each, 'shabby chic', so six of them together to make a cabinet would be £72, whereas the cheapest six-shelf bookshelf is £16. Kitchen shelving for pots and pans is similar, frames for pictures are a few pounds but the a1 and a2-size flyposters start at about £45 and go up from there.
I don't have a point, it's just weird.

so here's the first 1,000 words of my little experiment, rewriting A Study In Scarlet to take place in cyberpunk future-Chicago:
Tumblr media
New Chicago is the kind of city that gets into your guts. Like hookworm. The silt of the sea, the lights perilously perched at the water’s edge as the waves lap at the mildewing apartments of the Scaffs and floods the temporary shelters of the Undertow. It’s a tough place to live, but everywhere’s tough now. New Chicago won’t hold your hand, but it won’t lie to you, either, and these days that’s in short supply.
I guess that’s why I came back.
I had no illusions that being a battle medic for the Conglomerate was going to earn me a life of leisure and luxury when I signed up. It was just that medicine, my only true calling, was the stuff of scanners and computer readouts now. All the major hospitals employed CATvance scanners to diagnose everything from the common cold to Ion disease. Even if I had dreamed of the glorious, tumultuous life of a paramedic (I didn’t), they’d gone the same way as the dodo when Conglomerate lawyers figured out that putting emergency medicine in the hands of bots would save them billions in malpractice lawsuits.
At the end of the day, anyone serious about the real practice of medicine signed up when the Conglomerate put out the call. Thousands of jobs in real, bone-setting, infection-fighting, hot-blooded medicine, needed on the frontline out West where the edge of the Federation of American States met the burgeoning power of the Diné Empire. I spent two years in the ranks of the 66th Light Infantry Battalion, where there were no CATvance scanners, no thermobots, no Surg-o-matics, and you could barely requisition a pack of plaster bandages without getting your ass lit up by your superior officer.
That is, until a Diné Sun-gun shot me clean through the shoulder. When it’s you, bleeding out in the dirt of the Lesser Plains, you wish you had the damn Surg-o-matics, because their needles don’t shake like the hands of mind-rended teenage soldiers.
The Conglomerate sent me home, half-stitched and addled with river virus from the stinking banks of the Mississippi. I spent the next six weeks in a hospital, though I remember little of it. When I woke, they told me I had been discharged, had me sign a military NDA with my good hand, and sent me back out into the world with a weekly allowance only big enough for a room at the seediest motel I could find and a half-glass of gin before bed to keep the nightmares at bay.
I lived like that for six months. I spent my nights in restless sleep, and my days sitting on the balcony, blearily looking out into the world I’d given my right hand to defend. I thought about leaving — I knew there were smaller settlements out there, places where you could still breathe without a purifier, even. But New Chicago gets into you. Like fucking hookworm. It won’t lie to you — it will whisper in your ear at night, saying, what I have is what you deserve. You belong here. You and the dirt of my gutters are made of the same stuff.
It was right.
I was contemplating this problem — half a fifth deep — at a moonshine bar in Motor Row, just above the Scaffs, when I ran into an old acquaintance.
Ford looked too nice to be there, that was for sure. His clothes didn’t smell like gin, for one, and he sported an Ocular, a kind of monocle-like implant issued to doctors at high-ranking Conglomerate hospitals. He sat down and ordered a drink before he recognized me.
“Jon?”
I winced when he said my name. Ford had known the version of me that existed a decade prior, fresh-faced and idealist, an exceptionally gifted member of the last graduating class of the Conglomerate Institute’s School of Medicine, after which the whole degree was discontinued in favor of a small certificate program. The Ford that knew me then didn’t know me now.
“Jon Watsin?”
I plastered a smile onto my face, ignoring how twisting in my barstool made my shoulder twinge. “Ford — I thought I recognized you.”
“Jon! I thought you’d gone out to the — what are you doing here?” He searched me, his Ocularly-improved eye whizzing around my person, no doubt diagnosing my arm, my blood-alcohol level, and my profound halitosis all in one.
“I could ask you the same thing. Bit of a dive, for someone who’s clearly doing well for himself.”
Ford smiled, almost guiltily. “Well…”
“In fact…” I had been sharp in medical school, once, but months of sickness and isolation had taken it out of me. Still, though, I knew a sore thumb when I saw one. “Looking like that, I’m surprised you weren’t robbed on the way here.”
“I’ve just done the right work for the right people, Jon.”
“Damn,” I swore under my breath. “You’re harvesting for them, aren’t you?”
Healthcare in New Chicago was a simple affair. Pay your monthly fee to the Conglomerate, the gov-corp that cropped up in the city in the failing corners of the Federation, and the hospitals would serve you. Not for free, mind you, but even dying’s expensive these days. Fail to keep up your Conglomerate subscription, however, and you could only gain access to Federation clinics. Good for an antibiotic or an STI test, but not much else.
That left a gap. And gaps are filled with — what else? — organized crime.
Around here, it was the Hope Cartel, as in the Hope Family, as in the Hope Diamond. Need a new kidney? Dialysis? A bone marrow transplant? You could get it, for a price, in a Hope Cartel chop shop, a Frankenstein’s laboratory probably in the back of an auto yard or abandoned warehouse. But the cartel needed parts. And that’s where people like Ford came in.
“Relax,” Ford assured me, speaking quietly so as not to be overheard. It wouldn’t matter, though — if Ford was a cartel supplier, he’d be virtually untouchable, even in the dark alleys of Motor Row. “I’m Head Coroner at St. Lucy’s. What I take, nobody ever knows is missing.”
Well, that was a comfort.
I raised the glass of gin to my lips again, allowing the bitter liquid to ease the consternation that had lodged itself in my mind. “I’m not judging, Ford. There’s no angels in New Chicago.”
“There certainly aren’t,” Ford said sympathetically. “While we’re on the topic, want to tell me how you got your wings clipped?”

Russell Shoemaker Ohl (30 January 1898 – 20 March 1987)
An American scientist, Russell Shoemaker Ohl grew up in the state of Pennsylvania, attending Pennsylvania State University before eventually starting a career at Bell Labs. Ohl is most well known for his work with semiconductors and electronic materials. He is credited, sometimes alongside his co-workers Jack Scaff, for the discovery of the P-N junction, and the mechanism by which it works. This discovery was the precursor to the invention of the transistor. Later in life, Ohl's work led him to be the first to develop silicon solar cells.

Episode 2 #thehandmaidstale season 6. Serena in Canaan. Serena is in an idyllic world But she isn’t entirely happy. With the dinner scene Lizzie and I had planned a whole bunch of shots but when we saw the oner push in slowly over the entirety of the scene we looked at each other and in our guts we knew that is all the scene needed. One shot told the entire story. The camera tracks slowly in and rises up to meet Serena as she announces her decision. The camera was built on a scaff rig to be offset over the table and then come off the table and over the diners on camera right who had to be careful not to shift too much as we tracked in. Lizzie and I are big fans of telling the story with the camera and we get bored very quickly with ‘coverage’ shots for coverage sake! For the lighting at the dinner table. I used Gregory Crewdson as reference. I wanted that sun is just setting look with blue magenta starting to appear in the shadows. That magical time of day when everything changes. Big soft sources at the back windows heavily diffused and harder T12 tungsten lights at the side windows raking in to back of our diners. The T12s had CTS gel on them to warm them up even more. #cinematography #lighting at the end @yvonnestrahovski and @bradleywhitford always being hilarious on set! It’s a pleasure everyday to work with such wonderfully talented and funny actors!! Episode directed by @elisabethmossofficial shot by @nicdaleydp

a few day's progress at spawn in my singleplayer, large biome world. the lighthouse (incomplete) is now mostly a mob farm using the scaffold water dispensers from ianxofour's design, but super compacted and a different shape because i don't even want high-volume output, just something i can let run passively or AFK at if i'm pausing to go do a chore or whatever.
the green part has an enchanting room & i think i might try to make fake light beams to hide the scaff tower for AFKing if i can stomach another 7000 block boat trip.
once I get the lighthouse a little better off I wanna focus on the farming/animal area, which will be behind the bamboo across from the wheat farms. there's a big ole plain just north of here that i might convert wholly to farmland, so it'll just be practical small scale for now to give a pretty view.

IDK if it’s the case for anyone else, but for some reason, the fifth part of the story chapter isn’t showing up on mobile dashboard.
//It’s showing up for me, so maybe it’s just an error.
