nobody move i just had a revelation.

so, you know the Bailey School Kids books, right? the series about a bunch of children speculating on whether or not the seemingly innocuous grown-ups around them may actually be mythical creatures/wizards/undead/what have you.

i’ve seen that post joking about how the supposedly secret monster people in the books are just very obviously queer, but i just realized another interpretation: these books are just about nonhumans. i’m one of the weird grown-ups in this book series.

all this time, i was reading about werewolves and vampires and aliens living under the guise of humans, when i was the creature in human form all along!!

(ps: if you’re nonhuman, put what the title of your book in this series would be in the tags. mine would be ‘wasp-cats don’t write fanfiction’)

do you know how in times long past, people of some cultures would wear the skins of animals to take on their spirit or even their shape?

if you ask me, that tradition never died out; it only changed.

it splintered into a thousand different subcultures, specializing and honing to its practitioners’ wildest imaginations.

stilt-walking monsters, therians in their masks and quadrobic leaps, mascot performers and furries, the unexpected revival of clowns, cat-girls-boys-and so on, vtubers, larpers and roleplayers of all stripes. anyone with time and care and an overwhelming love for the art of transformation can take on the skin of something completely new.

and to all of them, thank you. thank you for keeping this magic alive in whatever form you choose - or whatever form chooses you.

you wonderful actors, shapeshifters, magicians and channelers, and artists all of you.

thank you for letting more of us see the beautiful unseen world you are privy to.

this is Cricket (any pronouns)! they’re fused with a super bell and a bee mushroom :3 (they had the cat ear headband before winding up in the mushroom kingdom, they just think it’s cute)

if you could add them to your party, they’d have super high mobility and powerful close-range attacks, but at the cost of eating damage for breakfast pretty much constantly (no defensive skills, rip bozo). they can also learn Heal Dash, a technique that lets them and an ally recover a small amount of health when they make contact! (it also absolutely makes a cute little purr sound when you do it)

for whatever reason, i noticed that the way the blowhogs were colored reminded me of whipped cream canisters (the kind with the red and blue caps), so i decided to make a blowhog variant that shoots whipped cream at you!

this is extremely silly and slightly cursed, but i love this dumb creature so much. sugary blowhog my beloved

there’s something about fix it fics and similar fan content that makes me want to cry. what if you were doomed since before your journey started, but your suffering pulled the heartstrings of beings unfathomable to you so much they pulled you out of your narrative like a burning building and rewrote history for you. what if the same forces that condemned you decided to save you after all
