For no particular reason, pls enjoy these queens from my Insecta Deck. (Spoilers: all the kings in this pack of cards are actually queens... This is the beetle that really gives that away I think.)

Next time someone tells you artists have it super-easy because we "just sit around drawing things"...

...I drew all the designs by hand for this deck which took hundreds and hundreds of hours, I shit you not. Every bug on every card from the courts to the 10s is drawn individually in colour pencils.

THEN... I digitally edited all the work onto card faces/backs/tucks, wrote and edited the artbook, and worked with the printers for the deck/book/accessories. I dealt with every print issue and every fuck up. I ran the Kickstarter, wrote all the posts, and answered each query.

AND THEN I quality checked and hand-labelled all the decks, every. Single. One. There were 1800 decks btw. But I like to know I'm sending people Good Things that aren't faulty (at least until some particular mail services got their hands on them... *sob*). Then I shipped every deck myself for the Kickstarter, just like I still ship the last few from my shop.

OH AND THEN I filled out my tax return. All while juggling the rest of my business with a disability and 3 spoonie cats. *Mashes face into desk.*

Don't get me wrong I love this job, and I feel pretty lucky to be able to make it work - even luckier to have supportive friends to help me keep going. But y'know what? There's a little more goes into being a self-employed sciartist/illustrator than "sitting around drawing," friends. So I can't help but feel a liiiittle salty every dam time I hear words to that effect!

Sharing this week some my art process. Making blue colours is one of my favourite parts. I use individual Petri dishes to create new blue hues. I called this photo “mini oceans” because each dish resembles a different colour in the sea. Note: the coral in this picture was collected on the reef for an experiment, with a permit. It is just a piece I had after the experiment. I like to judge myself by tearing up my skin. It’s a very easy thing to do. Look, you just step right up to the mirror and start tearing things down with your fingers, one by one, until it’s perfect and bleeding and swollen and smeared with eye-leaks. It’s quite easy to do. 

I like to judge myself by changing from a tank top to a t-shirt.

I like to judge myself by brandishing my humor like a battle sword. Ready to strike, commander! Has anyone seen my sheath?

I like to judge myself by leaning into the parasocial connections that everyone keeps lamenting about. I can be close to someone by maintaining my distance and remembering I’m different. Wait--is that what it means? What is Amanda Palmer saying when she says I see you? I’m confused.

I like to judge myself by pretending I’m an intellectual and then remembering that I can’t think critically on the spot if my life (or worse, my grades) depended on it.

I like to judge myself by reminding myself that I’m a handicapped tool with anxiety that has to work harder than everyone else to get the same results and also a better-than-thou cunt who uses that excuse to feel better about myself and also a Walt Whitman wannabe that is filled with too many contradictions to count on a counting day. Does this day count?

I like to judge myself by reminding myself I’m better than you, and then I like to finish my whiskey and judge myself for judging others, and then judge myself for being insignificant and powerless and cruel. 

I like to judge myself for imperfect words, and awkward spaces of connection, and mismanaged conversations.

I didn’t mean to say it that way.

I like to judge myself for tripping over the book that’s been on the floor since last week, and the laundry that’s been on the floor since last month, and the remnants of my confidence that have been on the floor since...

I like to judge myself for thriving as an inverse, as a lone-wolf, as a different, as a deviant, as a divergent, and then I also like to equally judge myself for knowing that that’s not really thriving at all, at least not for me. I like to judge myself for not being a true extrovert, just like I like to judge myself for not being a true introvert.

I like to judge myself for not being a real scientist and I like to judge myself for not being a real artist. Can I be a sciartist?

Can I be a human, for a day? Can I be impervious, for a day? Can I like to not judge myself for all the things that I judge others for judging? Can I pick it all up off the floor and use it again? Can I count this day?

I received this massive wonderful book for my birthday - full of information about and the art of Ernst Haeckel (one of my favorite artists and a true sciartist ). Ernst Haeckel was one of the first people to show the world how insane the tiny organisms living in the ocean are, sometimes they look too intricate to be real. It makes me think about that theory that if there are aliens here they are living in the ocean, you could almost believe that looking at some of the organisms that Haeckel has illustrated.
