Sunday’s coral reef. I probably dreamt about submerging inside those turquoise blue waters while painting. I haven’t been on the reef for a while, perhaps I am feeling the call again. Today’s reef. I did this one after swimming teaching 😊 now it is time for a two weeks break. I will spend time with my girls but will try to sneak into my art studio. — My artwork explores ways to show nature’s beauty to create environmental awareness. I have a PhD in evolutionary biology and used to work with marine sponges and corals. I decided to “retire” at 37 to let the artist within me the opportunity to flourish. In a year, I have learnt so much and had the chance (finally) to practice my art and improved my skills. And I wrote a children’s book. Some sort of melancholy makes me paint coral reefs this month. A reef keeps appearing in my drawings. While I draw, I think about the coral reefs I have seen slowly decline during my lifetime. While I draw, I also get optimistic because I still believe is not too late that we will have thriving coral reef for many many more years. I believe that there will be a time in which we stop all these madness we have done to Earth and give nature a chance to recover. Am I being to hopeful? I missed spending time in my art studio during the weekend. I don’t paint the whole day, I wish I could but I work and have kids and write so I usually sneak inside the shed where my studio is, to paint. Here my first attempt to paint a coral reef. Here it is my “final” draft completed. It is amazing how much this story changed and how much I learnt during the process, specially because I am a science writer 😂 and as you can imagine writing a fiction book for children was totally different. I finished after more than a year, after more than 22 thousand words, after changing the narrative, plot etc. I am happy with this version of my children book which tells a story about the sea and coral reefs. This is a printed copy which I re-edited. Sharing this week some my art process. Making blue colours is one of my favourite parts. I use individual Petri dishes to create new blue hues. I called this photo “mini oceans” because each dish resembles a different colour in the sea. Note: the coral in this picture was collected on the reef for an experiment, with a permit. It is just a piece I had after the experiment.
