Recursive mono and bi-stratified retinal ganglion cell. There are two types of recursive cells, the recursive monostratified cell (stratifying in the ON sublamina) and the recursive bistratified cell with dendrites in both the OFF and the ON sublamina of the inner plexiform layer (IPL). They have moderately densely branched dendritic trees in which many secondary branches tend to curve back towards the soma and they play a role in the direction selectivity in primates similar to the directionally selective, motion-sensitive RGCs (dsRGCs) of the rabbit. Mono and bi-stratified RGCs connect to different types of starburst amacrine cells (SAC)and bipolar cells. The bistratified cells connect to the on-off SACs while the monostratified cells connect to the on-SACs. If I’m working in the med school lab, I spend my day looking at the hundreds and hundreds of bones. Otherwise I’m usually working at a café here in Reykjavík sorting photos of the bones, looking at spreadsheets with measurements, and chatting with other scientists on #ScienceTwitter!⁣ ⁣ 7. WHAT’S THE WEIRDEST PART OF YOUR JOB? The weirdest part of my job is people sending me emails that say, “Our lab is getting a new freezer and we discovered a mummified human head in the back. Can you help us figure out where it came from?” The one case that weirded me out the most was a box of heel skins that was given to my old lab. Someone skinned the bottom of a bunch of human heels, dried the skin out, and kept them in a cardboard box. To this day, I don’t think we know where they came from or what sort of project that researcher was working on.⁣ ⁣ 8. HOW DOES BEING AN OPENLY QUEER SCIENTIST INFORM YOUR WORK? One of the challenges about studying the human body is that lots of people, and especially scientists, assume there are irrefutable “truths” about who humans are and how we can be defined. Being a queer person myself, I interact on a daily basis with people whose bodies, genetics, gender presentations, family structures, and whole states of being don’t align with typical categories.
