As for Bangkok Boy ep 2, I think I liked it even better than the first ep - precisely because it was still all backstory and zero romance (essentially because the leads still haven't met but that seems to finally change next week and oh boy, Sun looks smitten already).
I think ultimately I like BLs best when the romance seems almost accidental, and ends up not as the body of the story but instead as its heart.
Is the story cheesy and overdramatic and overdone? Sure. But I think that's the whole point. And ultimately, the beauty of Thai BL becoming more mainstream (or, as all the advertising and funding proves, indeed more of a soft power) is that there's enough room for there to be core romance along with other genres where the BL element is just another puzzle piece of the narrative.
Plus, if gagaoolala puts something in their BL/Yaoi bracket then that's all the confirmation I need. It didn't bother me with Shadow and it doesn't bother me now.
That being said, I need to know if Kawin (aka Top Piyawat's character) is ok in prison. Is he eating elright? Is his hair still all soft and shiny? 🙏
#the bangkok boy#the bangkok boy the series#jane watches stuff#sure the uh localization is a bit rough#and the decision to go ai is hopefully something that they themselves realised doesn't work#but the sheer scope of the production is so impressive#the coordination of all of the extras and locations alone#sure - tnp and the sign went all out with production values#but a big production scope is super ambitious too#and i really appreciate it#because lots of bl is very restricted when it comes to scope#which makes a lot of sense when you're on a shoestring budget

maybe the funniest and most telling/damning thing about the whole forced AI art horseshit is that of all the actual artists who might sensibly stand to benefit from it, or otherwise end up on the wrong side of this argument, the guys out there churning out boring unimaginative porn at a breakneck pace haven't adopted AI at all...
The guys who aren't particularly good artists. Don't have any unique artistic vision they're achieving or putting out into the world. The guys that live and die by their twitter post count. Churning out the same 3 poses and the same 1 bodytype with just a rotating assortment of topically popular cartoon/videogame characters... Those guys.
Not only did they not make the jump to AI generated porn. They didn't even incorporate AI into their workflow. Like, while I would not have been surprised if some of these guys had absolutely zero artistic integrity and put down their pen/stylus entirely, I also would have at least expected a good chunk of them to fall somewhere in the middle on this issue and embrace using AI to render their handdrawn lineart and increase the speed at which they produce their low quality art. Especially the ones who already have so much crap that they actually could train an AI learnset on their own work.
Yet such a hypothetical guy just straight up doesn't exist somehow. It's incredibly telling that the people verymuch at the bottom of the totempole of the artistic community at large don't seem to see any use for AI art.
#and to be real?#at the level of commitment those no name pornartists have#i wouldnt even blame them for the most part#the bigger picture about the actual horseshit industry enabling AI#actually pretty understandably outside the scope of most peoples consideration#still demands pushback from the public at large#but like not the fault of individuals for being suckered in and lied to or even just kind of ignorant and incurious/uncritical#especially if in this entirely unreal hypothetical they'd actually incorporated it into their process as a useful tool#and not a deranged hobby/cult in and of itself

the thing about AI industry is to actually solve problems instead of creating solutions to problems that don't exist, you have to care about the domain, really dig deep into the domain and specialize. But the whole selling point of AI is that it's a black box, that you don't have to understand your data to get predictions (lol), so a lot of the people in the industry don't want to go into the domain they're in and then get confused why they cannot find problems to solve.
#rant#the (very few) companies with legit AI use cases I have met#all have very narrow and well-defined problem scope and expectations#in a very specific niche in a specific domain#too many AI dudebros hate sitting down and analysing the problem from the domain perspective#they just want to throw a new toy at the problem and see if it works#(for demo passable only ofc)

tags from my notifs re: a post I reblogged. I don't want to pick on anyone in particular but this idea of "killing AI" is a common sentiment here and it's just so detached from reality.
AI is already weaponized in the literal sense. US-based companies are begging for regulation--weird, right? Corporations hate that shit. But regulation positions them well to acquire government contracts.
It's more useful to think of image generators and chat tools as a consumer-grade toy, like the $40 drones you can buy on Amazon: the fact that we have access to them means that it's wayyyy too late to even entertain the idea of "killing" the tech. And even if you're hellbent on the idea, the way to get there is not through cheering on corporations as they forge a path to sue us all for unauthorized blorboposting!
#shit like character AI is not generating enough profit to explain all the resources and hype poured into this#but people freak out about that and not the scarier shit because they won't look beyond the scope of their rp discord server or whatever

every year i read sustainability reports for my job and it's always depressing. this year it's even more depressing b/c the reports are obsessed with AI. "We're using AI software to reduce energy consumption at our offices :)" what? shut the fuck up. this is why we need to report upstream emissions
anyway sustainability reports are pure greenwashing and the worst part of all this? they're all better than my company's sustainability reports. Their ESG targets? better. Their decarbonization initiatives? Better. Their greenhouse gas accounting? Much better. Their benefits? So much better. It's infuriating. Like I know these reports are propaganda but so is my company's report. Our propaganda can't hold a fucking candle to theirs. And I have to read it for work
#me.txt#ARRRGH#'the AI software reduced our office energy use and we reduced our emissions by 30 tCO2e (out of 1000)'#'the AI software also emitted 130 tCO2e from electricity use alone but no one cares about that bc it's scope 3'#the only silver lining is if you're in climate jobs you're surrounded by like-minded individuals#and it's sooo cathartic and validating to vent about bullshit to people who get it and who agree#i once found someone who worked in the government because she thought she could help people and make a difference??#oof. that was a great rant + bonding moment#imagine thinking you could work for the government/corporations and be able to help people and make a difference. haha. ahahaha. ahahahaha#im sticking my head in a toilet and flushing#AND I DONT EVEN GET VOLUNTEER HOURS#i was gonna say idk why my superiors care so much about the report quality when it's all gonna be lies anyway#but that sounded so bad coming out of my mouth (fingers?) that I realized why my superiors cared so much#so that was just a rant. i'd much rather have a corporation that cares than one that's malicious. or negligent#sigh. no ethical anything under capitalism babey#but we can try!

So, start of the week I'm on a phone call with an executive producer talking about AI and field production.
That's really what this is about.
Because while it's true I crafted a video using as much AI as I could, the downside of working this way is obvious: lack of spontaneity, lack of human connection.
Oh sure I can dazzle with unparalleled beauty. I can make everything just so. But if I'm making everything this way from front to back, top to bottom... I'm not actually making something better than what I made before. Which is what I'm after: making something better than I've made before. And it can't be better if everything is just so. It can be faster. It can cost less. But it can't meet the bar we set and raise it.
That much is crystal clear.
What's also crystal clear is how powerful are AI tools in the context of our existing toolkit of drones, HDcams, Sony Alphas, gopros, and iPhones.
Even without AI we can capture a lot of footage on the run at the same time. So what I'm looking at is where AI augments what we're doing.
For example, the AI Venice video contains more sunset shots than would normally be captured during a standard shoot. There's a diversity of geographic locations that normally can't happen given the 60 to 90 minutes of golden hour available to a production crew provided that golden hour actually happens while the crew is there. Using a variety of sunset photographs gives us that diversity while the production can then focus on something other than basic (although obviously breathtaking) coverage.
The "falling in love" shot illustrates another advantage. Even though you can't throw a rock in Venice without hitting someone who's in love... what if that wasn't so? What if the field footage came back without such a shot?
Well, we can definitely manufacture one... is what I discovered. I can even give it a sunset vibe for some extra romance.
Moving beyond sunsets and romance, the video also reveals a fast way to achieve a greater variety of drone shots provided the coverage doesn't need to include anything from directly above.
Going up the side of a basilica to its roofline?
Totally doable.
For only the cost of a photograph.
If we want, we can capture more "drone" footage on the fly without having to deploy and pilot actual drones.
Definitely a time savings.
So augment... is what I'm thinking. For example I would never replace shooting a gondola sequence with alphas, go pros, and drones. I would never replace that effort for what I've done with AI tools. Beautiful as that work is, it lacks spontaneity and human interaction, genuine human moments. What I would do is use AI tools to make it look like we covered more canal than we did. More locations than we visited. More experiences, even at a distance.
We can create sequences that are broader, larger in scope if we wish. We can definitely commit more production time to human moments. We can definitely make more room to capture those moments by covering static locations with a preponderance of photographs transformed into moving imagery.
Static locations?
Sure. Think museums. Think cathedrals. Where most of what's important to the narrative isn't. moving.
Anyway...
There's definitely Tetris-ing of production camera time to consider. A producer's challenge if ever there was one. There's definitely strategic scheduling to implement in order to maximize human moments, capture beautiful and static subjects, and make good on the experiences we're trying to share in the time we have to capture... and share it.
Strategy is what I'm thinking. Bang for our buck is how I'm leaning. Figuring out how and where these new tools fit in order to help us do the best work we're capable of doing.
Better work than we've ever done.
That also manages to impress the hell out of us.
😁🤯☺️
