"Maniac Mansion," released in 1987 by Lucasfilm Games (now LucasArts), is a seminal point-and-click adventure game designed by Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick. It is widely regarded as one of the most influential titles in the adventure game genre, known for its innovative gameplay, quirky humor, and memorable characters.
Pros:
Pioneering Gameplay: "Maniac Mansion" was one of the first games to use the SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) engine, which revolutionized the adventure game genre by simplifying the interface with a point-and-click system. This allowed players to interact with the game world through simple commands like "pick up," "use," and "talk to," making the gameplay more accessible and intuitive.
Multiple Playable Characters: The game features a cast of seven characters, but players can only choose three to complete the game, leading to different solutions and multiple endings based on the characters selected. This adds a layer of replayability and strategic planning, as each character has unique abilities that affect how puzzles are solved.
Engaging Story and Humor: "Maniac Mansion" tells the story of a group of teenagers who break into a creepy mansion to rescue their kidnapped friend. The plot is filled with quirky humor, parodies of B-movie horror tropes, and eccentric characters like the mad scientist Dr. Fred, his bizarre family, and a sentient meteor. The witty dialogue and amusing scenarios contribute significantly to the game's charm.
Atmospheric Design: The game's detailed pixel art and atmospheric soundtrack create a captivating and eerie ambiance. The mansion is filled with hidden rooms, bizarre contraptions, and secrets that encourage exploration and curiosity.
Influence and Legacy: "Maniac Mansion" set the standard for future adventure games and inspired many titles that followed. Its influence can be seen in subsequent LucasArts games like "The Secret of Monkey Island" and "Day of the Tentacle."
Cons:
Dead Ends and Trial-and-Error Gameplay: One criticism of "Maniac Mansion" is the potential for dead ends—situations where players can make mistakes that render the game unwinnable without any indication. This can lead to frustration, requiring players to restart or reload from previous saves.
Obscure Puzzles: Some puzzles in the game are notoriously obtuse and may require a significant amount of trial and error to solve. While this was typical of many early adventure games, it can be a barrier for modern players accustomed to more streamlined puzzle design.
Dated Graphics and Interface: Although the pixel art has a nostalgic charm, the graphics and user interface can feel dated compared to contemporary standards. The limited color palette and low resolution might not appeal to all players.
Overall, "Maniac Mansion" is a groundbreaking adventure game that remains a beloved classic. Its innovative gameplay, engaging story, and humorous writing have earned it a lasting legacy in the gaming world. Despite some design quirks common to its era, it continues to be celebrated for its creativity and impact on the genre.

Vibe Pond
(And original fiction) [Prompt: "Why are we doing this again?"]
Why are we doing this again?
That was the main thought that was coming to me as I followed the river frog deeper into the woods.
To be honest, I didn’t quite know what to think of the guy. He came riding in a log raft over to my place, very much greener than I.
Though, very much lost.
He stayed with me for a few weeks, and we figured out roughly where he was from. It was very far from here, however…
Though, he kept on finding places he’d want to go on the maps. I’d have to decline repeatedly, but he kept on insisting.
Then he just up and walked out while I wasn’t looking one day. He didn’t go that far, thankfully, but he’d found a water hole that’d been documented on one of the maps. It wasn’t that impressive to me, but he was really interested in it.
And this kept on happening where he left without me noticing and I’d usually find him within reasonable walking distances.
Right, that was it.
We were going out to see some mushroom glade or whatever. That’s why we were going at night; the mushrooms were bioluminescent.
Lots of uncharted waters for me, though. There were many places where sometimes I’d walk into something like a puddle, but find myself falling deep into a pool of water. I wouldn’t’ve dared come out here on a regular day.
Then we reached it. It was a clearing with trees dotted around it. All the collapsable vegetation that’d been giving me troubles earlier were absent.
Now he’d got here before me; it looked like these ‘shrooms also had some, er… “mellowing properties”.
But the mushrooms themselves were brilliant blue that reflected off the water of this sizable pond. Though, the pond seemed to have a glow of its own… Looking down into it, there seemed to be a green glowing from the bottom. Fireflies gave a yellow light to the entire area.
The river frog offered me a ‘shroom. I declined. I was just going to vibe for the time being.

✨Guide to Getting The Beekeeper's Picnic Running on Mac✨
So the bad news is, all of the "get your game made using the Adventure Game Studio game engine easily ported into Mac!" guides that I've found aren't resulting in something which... actually runs. I think an official Beekeeper's Picnic macOS release is going to require me to outsource to someone who has more of an idea about what they're doing, and that'll take more time :c
But the good news is...
I have found a pretty easy temporary solution in the form of ScummVM, a program designed to let you play many classic graphical point-and-click adventure games. And BKP, apparently.
So, here are some steps on how to use it:
Firstly, you'll want to get the itch.io version of The Beekeeper's Picnic. Download the Windows version, and double click on the Zip file to unzip it.
2. Download ScummVM.
3. When you open ScummVm for the first time, it'll look like this. Click Add game...
4. Select the 'Windows' folder that you unzipped. When Scumm comes back with what it's found in that folder, click 'The Beekeeper's Picnic' and then 'Choose'
5. At this point, Scumm might get very confused. It might panic. It might show you a message that looks something like this:
You must shush it like a skittish horse and click 'Add anyway'.
6. Then a screen will come up with lots of tabs and options. I just kept everything as default and clicked 'Ok'
7. You can now select The Beekeeper's Picnic and click Start! And it should run!
Some stuff to be aware of
I haven't had anyone come back to me reporting this doesn't work yet (woo!) but if you buy the game and it doesn't work give me a shout and I'll be happy to refund!
You won't get automatic updates, so you might watch to check back on Itch.io from time to time to make sure you have the latest version.
You can play other point and click adventures this way! Why not treat yourself to Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Rose Tattoo while you're at it? It's my favourite!
