A lot of female singer-songwriters of the 90's achieved their biggest triumphs in the period and that eventually became that. Paula Cole, for instance, had a successful period during the 90's that petered out after that time. True, she wasn't the only one of her peers with this fate – check the introductory statement to this post –, yet the reasons why differ from one to another. Paula Cole – this is my personal view – intended to have a different career than the one she actually got. I mean, her records do not lack in prowess, they're fine, they struggle to find an identity for her. While she did locate the latter recently, I keep asking myself – would she have been more accepted, had she had that during the 90's?

SNEAK PEEK!
Chapter 346 -- The One Where We're Not Gonna Take It
Ron kept his eyes peeled as he stood at the front entrance hall with Hermione and Professor McGonagall. He and Harry had an unspoken agreement that he was going to find the snake and after Neville had insisted that he take the sword… well, to say that he felt pressure was an understatement. But he knew with absolute certainty that he would not let his best mate down.
He wore the sword of Gryffindor sheathed at his side. It felt heavy at his hip, but in a good way. He was ready to use it and he had been practicing with Theo in Defence Club over the last few weeks. Theo had been helping Professor Rhiannon teach the art of sword fighting when Egan Kerry, Laoise Munster, and Fiadh Tipperary weren’t able to attend class. Tipperary’s ability to use two swords at once was incredible and only Theo had even come close to her level of swordsmanship.
Theo had this thing called a Dara Knot that he used and he shared it with the others. It had been a gift from Finn to help him train and Theo had mastered it. The Dara Knot was spelled to bring forth warriors to fight against and Ron had never see anything so incredible before. Not to mention that the warriors took no prisoners and only Theo had ever been able to to defeat them. Finn had definitely taught him a lot about sword fighting and the fact that Theo used his sword every day was obvious to anyone who watched him fight.
He was a natural.
The muscles in his arms proved it and told Ron how much he didn’t work out his own arms as much as he should. Sword fighting took a lot of upper body strength.
After practicing, Ron knew that he would never reach that level of skill that Theo possessed, but he was prepared to use the sword of Gryffindor for more than just the bloody snake if necessary.
“Are the archers ready?” McGonagall asked, pulling Ron from his thoughts.
“Yes, Professor,” Hermione said, quickly. “Seamus has control over them. I’ll be going up to help as soon as we’re done here.”
The archers were under the guidance of Dean and Seamus who had both done very well with archery under the help of Tara’s Royal Guard. Kellan Cork had done wonders with the archers and Ron knew that Hermione had learned a lot from him. Ron still thought that watching her use a bow and arrow was the sexiest thing he’d ever seen. He was starting to think if they lived through this, he definitely needed to tell her about his fantasy of her with the bow naked.
“What about getting the young ones to safety?” McGonagall demanded.
“Mandy Brocklehurst, Anthony Goldstein, Hannah Abbott, and Tracey Davis,” Hermione answered.
“The Gryffindors?” McGonagall prompted.
“Hannah will take care of it,” Hermione assured her. “Dennis Creevey is doing a head count with Daire Donovan down in the Chamber. Mandy and Anthony have lists of every student who is part of the Defence Club and every student who should be down in the Chamber.”
McGonagall pursed her lips. Ron knew that no matter how all right she was with the plan, she much preferred that all of the students were gone from the beginning. But it wasn’t going to happen. Too many of them had refused to flee and Ron was proud of them for wanting to help in any capacity.
Ron put his hands in his back pockets and stared out across the bridge at the gates that led to Hogwarts. Those gates had always represented such goodness; that thrilling excitement for a new school year. A new adventure. Arriving at the station in Hogsmeade and taking the carriages through those gates and up the bridge… now, he was seeing them as the first line of defence in holding back an army.
Suddenly the big wrought iron gates and stone pillars didn’t look as inviting so much as not strong enough.
Ron knew that Voldemort would be descending upon the castle soon and the wait was even harder to do knowing that he was on his way. He almost would have preferred the surprise of it.
“Let’s do this,” Ron said, his eyes meeting that of the headmistress.
McGonagall raised her wand and snuck a look over her shoulder at them. “Between you and me, I’ve always wanted to use this spell.”
Ron couldn’t help but laugh as she waved her wand and yelled out: “Piertotum Locomotor!”
The large stone statues sprang to life.

Books in June, whatever
The bad:
Triple Duty Bodyguards by Lily Gold - I have to admire her “work smarter not harder” mentality because I have read two of her books now and every character is exactly the same from book to book with like 2 details changed about their physical appearance. I had essentially a 2 day long panic attack and my brain was on hyperdrive and this literally made me stop thinking any thoughts for the 5 hours it took to read this so like, do with that what you will.
Something Spectacular by Alexis Hall - the sequel to a pretty mediocre Alexis Hall book but in this one oh my GOD the romance didn’t work for me at all. We were constantly told how interesting and captivating the love interest was but I cannot tell you a single thing about them other than they’re an opera singer. V boring, only finished it because the friend group dynamic was fun
The fine:
Killadelphia, Vol. 1-3 by Rodney Barnes - cool concept but it kind of felt like the author was like a 12 year old kid who didn’t know when to stop. “What if there’s vampires in Philadelphia right now and former president John Adams is one and so is his wife! And so is Thomas Jefferson! And Sally Hemings is too but she and Abigail Adams are in love! And then Tituba shows up and she’s a WEREWOLF.” These are all things that happened, I will not be continuing.
Radium Girls by Cy - another graphic novel bc I was on a kick this month? Anyway the art is cool but the translation from French to English is not great and kind of distracting!
She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen - what if we pretend to date for Reasons and you’re the cheerleading captain and I’m a basketball player and we kiss and we’re both girls? V cute v fun
We Could Be So Good by Cat Sebastian - what if we’re best friends working at the same paper in the 1950s and I move into your apartment after my fiance leaves me for another man and then we kiss and fall in love and we’re both boys? V cute v sweet
The good/great:
Your Driver is Waiting by Priya Guns - viscerally sweaty and dirty and ANGRY but in a good way. Also made ME angry which I thought was a sign of good writing. Read for a little bit of catharsis if you’re upset that you’re fuckin broke and will always be fuckin broke bc nothing seems to get better and you kind of want to set something on fire, just a little bit, as a treat.
Pardon My Heart by Marcus Jackson - really honest poetry about Black masculinity that’s sweet and heartbreaking. Favorite poems were the title poem, and the three poems at the end that are about Jackson’s wife and how much he loves her.
The Woods, Vol. 1-9 by James Tynion IV - scratched the Stranger Things itch in my brain. Twisty and never went the way I thought it would. Loved these characters and their journeys!
Sweeney Astray, translated by Seamus Heaney - this weird-ass book from the 17th century was a WILD ride and I loved every second of it. Read it more for the historical info rather than its literary merit, if that makes sense? Sweeney gets cursed by a Christian king for being a dick and spends the entire book wandering the Irish countryside, eating watercress, and insisting that no one wants him around even when several of his family members say “WE WANT YOU AROUND”
Bitter Root, Vol. 1-3 by David F. Walker - read if you liked Ring Shout because the premise is so similar! The art style was great and I liked how expansive the world was. Great characters and a great storyline.
Electric Arches by Eve L. Ewing - fuck Eve Ewing for being so GODDAMN talented, it makes me sick, please read this.
Currently reading: The Devil’s Element by Dan Egan, which gave me like 4 more solid examples of the British Empire being fucking monsters (and American companies causing so much environmental harm and then saying it’s too expensive to fix)

Irlande : Kelleher – Browne, Egan, Collins, O’Shea, McClean – Cullen, Molumby, Knight – Idah, Ogbene.

Hello! You obvs don’t have to answer but I’m curious as to writers/artists you like? Any recs? Love love your writing.
Hello! Thank you so much, and double thanks for this question —book recs are my love language. (I'm interpreting this as traditionally published authors but if you meant fanfic authors, oops, let me know.)
Favorite authors:
Lauren Groff (especially Fates and Furies) writes beautiful, lovely stories that are so rooted in place and character, and the prose is just so clean and gorgeous.
Joshua Ferris (especially Then We Came To The End) writes terrifically sad books that are also, somehow, SO funny.
Jennifer Egan (especially A Visit from the Goon Squad) for New York stories.
Katherine Arden for satisfying fantasy based in Russian folklore.
Some favorite books, not really in order:
My Education by Susan Choi: I've read and reread this, I love the main character and it's just such a sexy book. She falls in love with her professor, but I'll leave the rest for you to discover.
Exciting Times, by Naoise Dolan: Sally Rooney-esque — if you liked Conversations with Friends, you'll like this.
Exit West, by Mohsin Hamid: One of my few magical realism re-reads. Gorgeous, gorgeous. Fell in love with both main characters.
Department of Speculation, by Jenny Offill: God, sad. About marriage, and love, and bitterness. Set in Brooklyn. CW for bedbugs.
Lincoln in the Bardo, by George Saunders (and ALL of his short stories)
Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: A love story, partly set in Nigeria, but also about what it means to be Black in America and Black in England, and about immigration and home-coming.
Animal, by Lisa Toddeo: Really raw and painful story about power and abuse, wonderfully written, occasionally funny.
Poetry: Seamus Heaney, Anne Carson, Ocean Vuong, Danez Smith, Ben Lerner (sorry! sorry!)
My taste in art is too basic to be worth hearing about. I'm a slut for a good Singer Sargent, I'm sniffy about contemporary art, and I love black and white photography. Barf
