Excuse me while I complain a bit
I get migranes sometimes that (usually) make half my body go numb. Fucking horrifying right? It is. I half medicine to help it but I'm like. Scared. Of taking too much medicine. And this shit is like "could potentially fuck you up? Only allotted 8 a month" so whenever possible I try not to use it
But at 3-4 am this morning I woke up with not JUST half my body numb, oh baby my ENTIRE MOTHERFUCKING BODY was numb. Idk if the migrane had something to do with it or if just the sheer terror of the sensation sent me into a panic attack but holy shit I felt like I couldn't breathe
And whenever I get these migranes my first priority is ~clearly~ to not make a scene. That'd be stupid! Like literally the first one I got I was 15 on a plane and I thought I was actually having a stroke, which btw is the way my grandfather died. So so fun. I thought "I might be dying. But I'll die faster if a flight attendant sees me and tries to help-"
And once I stumbled through my father's apparement to get my meds once and walked past him thinking "dont act suspicious, dont fall dont fall" and then burst into tears when I dropped the pills and my dad called out asking if I was alright and I couldn't form a coherent answer back.
ALL this to say- what I could've done was called or texted my mom and said "help. Need water." And she probably would've helped. But instead I stumbled downstairs pills in hand, unsure if I was making it back upstairs, to get a glass of water. Why didn't I take it dry? Because I'm a coward that's why. Also didn't have confidence in my swallowing abilities given I could hardly fucking breathe. And some fucking demonic beast decided to make the pills packaging the HARDEST DAMN THING TO OPEN LIKE WHAT THE FUCK MAN
IMAGINE you're me here. You woke up, you probably got less than 2 hours of sleep. Your mind isnt minding, your limbs aren't limbing. They feel weak and tired- everything feels like it weighs 5x what it should and your hands dont necessary want to do what they need to do. Imagine an alien controlling a human body. Hands sorta flailing around, no good grip on anything, sorta floating like they're in zero gravity or some shit. Surgeon simulator style.
And this mother fucking packaging holds a tiny teeny itty-bitty pill in some sorta hard plastic tin foil shit that refuses to break.
I was crying and waving scissors around when I finally opened it.
I didn't fall asleep for another hour. And now I'm awake. And I have been since 7:30. Because unlike and other day where I peacefully sleep through my
The conclusion to this epic tale? My body feels so so fucking weak now. And I feel awful. And tired. And I guess this is my life now.
Man, I just wanted to see Across the Spiderverse today :(

I wonder how different gang members initially reacted to how much they were remembered from their outlaw days.
Arthur, Hosea and Dutch were probably considered the greatest, but Javier, Bill and Micah would have a bit of fame, right?
Poor Kieran, Molly, Sean, and Lenny were probably only mentioned in Arthur’s journal, their epic lives lost to time and reduced to footnotes.
The VDLs are sort of remembered like the Dalton Gang. That is, if you say 'van der Linde gang' in passing conversation people will know you're talking about outlaws in the old west, but very few people could actually name a single VDL. They also fall into the bracket of their tales being so legendary that a lot of people don't realize they were an actual gang, and there's a lot more fiction than fact in surviving stories.
That being said, during the Golden Age of Westerns, a lot of films were based off the tales of the VDLs. The MacSummers household are very guilty of sitting down with a few beers (and/or a bong) and watching these movies on the weekends, cackling at how wrong the characters are.
Their favorite is Red Dead, which was a 50s film that followed anti-hero John Marston hunting and gunning down the members of his former gang: Micah Bell, Javier Escuella, Bill Williamson and Dutch van der Linde, for redemption inspired by a nun named Sister Abigail, who held him in his arms and comforted him as he was dying after being mistakenly shot* by police as he killed Dutch. Horrendously inaccurate, but the action scenes are great.
Of the members of the gang remembered, it is John, Dutch, Hosea and Bill. This is thanks a later, critically acclaimed film, Williamson Territory, which sees the og VDL gang at war with the Williamson gang following the Act 2 death of Hosea at the hands of Bill. It is somehow praised for its historical accuracy for including the feature of lesser known members such as Arthur, Charles, Sadie, Seth and Norman.
Johnathan Pearson, grandson of Simon Pearson and current owner of the Pearson Delicatessen in Rhodes, is actually an avid vanderlindonian, which is what the forum community of obsessive amateur historians (autistic men in their 40s) call themselves. He is very proud to be a descendant of a confirmed member of the VDL gang and uses it to win internet points in arguments with other forum members.
Despite Johnathan Pearson being obsessed with the VDLs, he is yet to realize that any of the VDLs are actually the VDLs. When his son Sam bought home Isaac and Kai Bell for playdates, he was too impressed by Kai being a direct descendant of Amos Bell, brother of Micah Bell, to notice that Isaac's extended family are literally the VDLs.

Check out this awesome new addition to my TMNT collection!
Tumblr media
This adorable plush of Ice Cream Kitty was made by Underground Dojo, and there are still some of these left in stock. Make sure to check out the website for some more stuff in the store!
I first saw (and held) this plushie when I was meeting the guy at the "Epic Tales from the Sewers" table at GraniteCon last month. I knew I had to get one for myself, since I'm a big 2012 fan and Ice Cream Kitty is just one of the best TMNT pets ever.
Tumblr media
The details on this plush are just so good, and I like how fuzzy she feels too (from the material used to make it). I'm happy to have another massive gem to my giant collection of Turtles stuff (others include TMNT autographs from Rob, Sean, and Greg, the 1st edition of the Visual History book signed by Kevin Eastman, and this dope 10th anniversary art print made and signed by Ciro Nieli).

2021: Fairy and Folk Tales of Ireland (W.B. Yates)
Some of these are degree-related, some not; some harken back to bygone areas of interest and some persist yet; some were obtained willingly and some thrust upon me without fanfare. I think there are also some I've left at college, but I'm not sure I was actually intending to read any of them - I know one is an old copy of Structural Anthropology by Claude Levi-Strauss that Dad picked up for me secondhand, which I...don't intend to torment myself with. Reading about Tom Huffman's cognitive-structural theory of Great Zimbabwe almost finished me off and remains to date the only overdue essay I intend to never finish, mostly because the professor let me get away with abandoning it.
There are also library books, mostly dissertation-oriented, from which you can tell that the cognitive archaeologists who live in my walls finally fucking Got me:
The Rise of Homo sapiens: The Evolution of Modern Thinking (Thomas Wynn & Fred Coolidge)
The Material Origin of Numbers: Insights from the Archaeology of the Ancient Near East (Karenleigh A. Overmann)
Archaeological Situations: Archaeological Theory from the Inside-Out (Gavin Lucas)
And, finally, some I've actually finished recently ("recently" being "within the past year"):
The Body Fantastic (Frank Gonzalo-Crussi, solid 6/10 essay collection about a selection of body parts, just finished earlier)
An Entertainment for Angels: Electricity in the Enlightenment (Patricia Fara, also a solid 6/10, fun read but nothing special)
Babel: An Arcane History (R.F. Kuang, 8/10, didactic (sometimes necessary) but effective; magic system was cool and a clever metaphor)
The Sign of Four (A.C. Doyle, 2/10 really racist and for what)
Dr. Space Junk vs. the Universe: Archaeology and the Future (Alice Gorman, 8/10, I love you Dr. Space Junk)
In Search of Us: Adventures in Anthropology (Lucy Moore, 8/10, I respect some of these people slightly more now)
The Dispossessed (Ursula K. Le Guin, 9/10 got my ass)
The Hound of the Baskervilles (A.C. Doyle, 7/10 themez 👍)

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance - "The Sacrifice" Trailer
youtube
Japanese version
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam, Microsoft Store) on June 14, 2024 worldwide.
■ What is Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance?
Released in 2021, ATLUS’s renowned RPG Shin Megami Tensei V has sold more than one million copies worldwide.
This highly acclaimed title has evolved in every aspect, including the system and scenario, and will be available on multiple modern platforms!
At the beginning of the story, the player is presented with two divergent paths. The story told in Shin Megami Tensei V, the Canon of Creation, and a brand-new route, Canon of Vengeance, a dramatic tale of revenge by the fallen.
The Canon of Vengeance follows the scenario of Shin Megami Tensei V</em but changes drastically from the latter half of the game. The outcome will be completely different. Enjoy the two divergent stories to your heart’s content.
The battle system, demon fusion, and field exploration have also evolved in depth with the addition of new elements. We are excited to deliver a full-fledged RPG that can be enjoyed by those who have already played Shin Megami Tensei V</em, as well as those who are playing this series for the first time.
■ Story
Thou shalt be God—.
When a grisly murder scene in modern-day Tokyo blocks our protagonist’s walk home, an unplanned detour leaves him buried and unconscious. He awakens in a new Tokyo, a wasteland ravaged by apocalypse now called Da’at… but before bloodthirsty demons can claim his life, a savior emerges, and the two of them unite to become a mighty being, neither human nor demon: a Nahobino.
Revenge Awaits
Demons attack humans and seek to create a world of chaos. Defying them is Bethel, an organization seeking to protect God’s order. Caught up in the conflict between the two, while exploring Da’at, the protagonist meets and starts traveling with Yoko Hiromine. Using magic, Yoko and the protagonist stand together on the front line.
Four female Demons know as the Qadištu. “And so we have found it…The key to the resurrection…” A member of the Qadištu, Lilith, calls protagonist the Key of Resurrection, and herself The Oppressed. What is their purpose? A tale of revenge by the fallen begins.

■ System
The Parallel Ravaged Tokyo: Da’at
The story takes place in the Tokyo we know and the parallel world of Da’at. Demons roam in this vast netherworld, attacking the protagonist.
Da’at varies greatly in aspect from place to place, from desolate deserts and collapsed buildings, to areas lined with surreal geometric structures. Each location may contain different demons, often with tricky terrain that you’ll need to use your wits to navigate.
In Canon of Vengeance, Da’at includes a sprawling new area, Shinjuku ward will become available to explore.
—Various demons roam Da’at, blocking the hero’s way.
Tumblr media
—Discover the mysteries of Shinjuku ward. A sacred atmosphere created by a huge object that resembles a great tree.
Tumblr media
Netherword Exploration
Da’at is interspersed with a variety of elements, some of which will obstruct the hero’s path, while others provide advantages in his Da’at exploration and combat. Explore every corner of the vast netherworld by using these new features.
—Magatsuhi Crystal
Magatsuhi Crystals present in Da’at can be collected to provide various benefits. Green crystals recover HP, yellow crystals recover MP, and red crystals will increase the Magatsuhi Gauge.
Tumblr media
—Magatsu Rail
This path formed of Magatsuhi connects and allows for travelling between the two locations in Da’at. Activating it not only provides a shortcut to a specific location, but also allows the user to navigate to hidden locations that are normally unreachable.
Tumblr media
—Abscesses
Occasionally, there are large red obstacles growing in the path of the main character.
This obstacle is known as an Abscess. Powerful enemies appear in the vicinity and attack the protagonist. Defeating Abscesses will awaken new Miracles.
Tumblr media
—Magatsuhi Demon
Demons cloaked in an aura of Magatsuhi will sometimes spawn in Da’at, called Magatsuhi Demons
Unlike normal demons, they are dangerous enemies with powerful skills, but may drop valuable items if defeated.
Tumblr media
Da’at Exploration
Da’at is interspersed with a variety of elements, some of which will obstruct the hero’s path, while others provide advantages in his exploration and combat. Explore every corner of the vast netherworld by using these new features.
—Relics
Relics can be obtained from vending machines scattered throughout Da’at. Take them to Gustave, who will exchange them for Macca.
Tumblr media
—Demon Navigator
Demons that accompany the main protagonist and support him in his exploration. They do not participate in combat, but will search for items, Magatsu Rails, and other useful items on the map and notify you.
Tumblr media
—Treasure Chests and Amalgams
Yellow objects will give you items and Macca, and silver objects will give you Glory. Both are useful for adventures, so keep your eyes out.
Tumblr media
—Aogami Husks
Aogami’s Essences can be obtained by examining the husks of Aogami scattered throughout Da’at. Once the husks has been examined, the Essence can be obtained again by after a certain time has passed.
Tumblr media
—Demon Haunts
The Demon Haunts can be visited by accessing the leyline founts connecting the various regions of Da’at. In the Demon Haunts, the protagonist’s demons appear and gather, and the player can enjoy interacting with their allies by conversing with them and giving them gifts, as well as viewing them up close and taking photos.
In addition, special conversations may occur regarding game progressions, such as battles and field exploration, and these may offer rewards such as items or status enhancements of demons.
If you see a conversation notification in the menu, why not visit a demon haunt!
You can have conversations not only with your demons, but also with Aogami. Some of these conversations may lead to stat and ability bonuses for the Nahobino!
Tumblr media
—Cadaver’s Hollow
The Cadaver’s Hollow shop is accessible via leyline founts. You can pay Macca to purchase items or sell Relics you have collected to Gustave.
Gustave (voiced by David Errigo Jr. in English, Yusaku Yara in Japanese)
The keeper of Cadaver’s Hollow with an interest in human-era items. He will buy any Relics found within the netherworld.
Gustave will reward you for locating Miman, his relic-seeking pawns, when you report back to him with the number you have found. The number of Miman determines the type of reward.
Tumblr media
Discovering Miman will also help you obtain Glory, which is necessary to learn Miracles. Be on the lookout for hiding places throughout the netherworld.
Tumblr media
World of Shadows and Demon Fusion
The World of Shadows can be accessed via the leyline founts.
With help from Sophia, the ruler of the World of Shadows, you can perform a Fusion to create stronger demons.
Aside from a two-demon fusion, there are fuse by result that allows you to choose a resultant demon, a special fusion that can be performed by choosing from two to four demons, or an Essence Fusion that utilizes Essences to lower or increase the ranks of the same race.
Most skills can be inherited by other demons through fusion, with the exception of a few select special skills.
Sophia (voiced by Erin Yvette in English, Sayaka Kinoshita in Japanese)
Tumblr media
A mysterious being who rules of the World of Shadows. Her introduction states “I have come from a plane bar beyond this one to act as a guide to both the world and the Nahobino.”
There are multiple ways to create new and powerful demons: two-demon fusion merges two demons of your choice, fuse by result allows you to determine which demon you want first, a special fusion performed with up to four demons, and Essence Fusion, which uses a demon’s Essence to provide additional bonuses and skills.

Michael Sheen is captivating in this epic production that marries 18th century Vienna with the Beatles circa Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
You could be forgiven for thinking that this latest production of Amadeus had reworked Peter Shaffer’s 1979 Tony Award-winning play into a one-man show, so thoroughly does acclaimed Welsh actor Michael Sheen dominate the marketing material. And you’d only be half-wrong. At times there are around 40 people on stage together, but Sheen’s turn as the preening, pompous, guilt-wracked, self-aggrandising Antonio Salieri is so captivating you find yourself having to drag your attention away from him even when he’s simply sitting quietly in a chair on stage while the action of the scene plays out away from him.
When we first meet Salieri the once-revered composer is a withered old man, dressed in a wig and a red robe reminiscent of Gary Oldman’s first appearance in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. And much like that film, Amadeus tells the tale of a devout man who declares a war on God. In Salieri’s case, it is unquenchable professional jealousy that drives his mutiny against heaven; on meeting the prodigiously talented Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Rahel Romahn, recently seen on screen in Here Out West and excellent here) at a salon in music-obsessed 18th century Vienna, he simply cannot reconcile the man’s unarguable compositional genius with his boorish, scandalous behaviour. Aghast at the injustice that God would grant such talent to such a man, he resolves to destroy Mozart – to strike back at God, he tells us, not for any mere personal grudge. If you say so, Salieri.
Tumblr media
...this is 18th century Vienna by way of the Beatles circa Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
From there we flash back to see how Mozart’s fortunes wane even as his talent swells, all down to Salieri’s Machiavellian machinations at the court of Emperor Joseph II (Toby Schmidt of Black Sails, fantastically foppish in Hugh-Laurie-in-Blackadder mode) – who loves music as long as it doesn’t have too many notes, and whose mercurial whims can spell fortune or disaster for all around him.
It all plays out on an impressively deep stage designed by Michael Scott-Mitchell that caters to expansive crowd scenes, yet also conveys an almost claustrophobic intimacy during the dramatic two or three-hander scenes. Indeed, Amadeus is something of a chamber piece, and it’s interesting to wonder how it might play out on a smaller stage than the Opera House’s (spectacular, have no doubt) recently refurbished Concert Hall. There’s a tension between the scope of the story and the scale of the production.
The splendid costumes by Anna Cordingley and local fashion legends Romance Was Born take no prisoners, evoking the OTT court fashions of the time and then some – this is 18th century Vienna by way of the Beatles circa Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Veteran actor Sean O’Shea’s outfit as Baron Gottfried van Swieten, frenemy to both Salieri and Mozart, is impressively peacockish. Salieri’s dourness and religiosity is conveyed by his comparatively sober black and silver ensemble, while Mozart looks like he can barely be convinced to dress himself, his sleeves loose and ragged.
There’s not a bum note in the cast (if we can’t use music puns here, where can we?) and Lily Balatincz is particularly impressive as Mozart’s increasingly desperate wife Constanz, bringing nuance to what could have been a rote victim role. But this is Sheen’s show, make no mistake.
Back at the dawn of his career, Sheen took on the role of Mozart opposite David Suchet’s Salieri in a landmark production that took him from the West End’s Old Vic to Broadway and Los Angeles, so there’s a pleasing symmetry to him essaying Salieri now. It’s an immensely challenging role, the character bearing the burden of attention for almost the entire two-hour and fifteen minute running time (a 20 minute, slightly-too-short intermission included). But Sheen handles it beautifully, adjusting his posture and changing his accent to embody both the elder (who has reverted to his native Lombardy accent) and younger court composer. Crucially, Sheen has the charisma to make us, his audience and confessor, complicit. Salieri is one of the great villain-protagonists of the stage, and while Shaffer’s deft writing does a lot to help us connect with this self-crucified man through his pettiness and hypocrisy, there needs be considerable charm in play to seal the deal and make us want to spend a little under three hours in his company. Sheen, wrapping himself around Shaffer’s delicious dialogue like a mongoose around a cobra, has it in spades.
Tumblr media
This is a superb production from director Craig Ilott (Smoke and Mirrors, American Idiot) and Red Line Productions, who manage the transition from their usual cosy environs of the Old Fitz to the Concert Hall with aplomb, anchored by a sublime, textured performance. If you make this your first show of 2023, you’ll be giving the rest of the year a lot to live up to.
Amadeus is playing until January 21, 2023, as part of the Sydney Opera House’s mammoth calendar of events for its 50th anniversary celebration.

“Who was Tom Forçade? A revolutionary guru? A hippie con man? An undercover cop? In Sean Howe’s brilliant book, he’s a weird one-man secret history of seventies America, a mystery man who keeps showing up everywhere from the early underground press to the punk-rock explosion. Agents of Chaos turns this bizarre tale into an obsessively fascinating and addictive epic, like a countercultural thriller.” —Rob Sheffield (Dreaming the Beatles) “A fascinating, anecdote-packed tale of drugs, guns, and magazine publishing.” —Entertainment Weekly “Rollicking history ... captures the freewheeling spirit of the counterculture’s troubled march through the 1970s.” —Publishers Weekly “A cautionary tale from the countercultural past, full of revolutionary glory and ugly criminality.” —Kirkus Reviews “Like an obsessed detective hunting a man without a face, Sean Howe has turned the life of Tom Forçade into a detailed metaphor explaining why the seventies were sublime, why the seventies failed, and how those two things are inextricably connected.” —Chuck Klosterman (The Nineties) “Richly drawn, deadly serious, utterly comical, this book gave me a contact high.” —Joe Hagan (Sticky Fingers: The Life and Times of Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine) “A gob-smacking roller coaster ride.” —Tom O'Neill (Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties)

WHILE THE STAR OF THE MOVIE USUALLY GETS ALL THE ACCOLADES AND WINS IN THE END; IT'S A GOOD BET THEY COULDN'T HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT HELP FROM ONE (OR MORE) UNSUNG-HERO DURING THEIR JOURNEY.
Here's my personal pick for the best unsung hero.
Samwise Gamgee, the unsung hero of Middle-earth, whose loyalty, courage, and humble heart indeed make him the true backbone of the "Lord of the Rings" saga.
In a tale brimming with warriors, wizards, and kings, Sam's steadfastness shines as a beacon of the extraordinary power of ordinary folk. His journey from a simple gardener in the Shire to the stalwart protector of Frodo Baggins on their perilous quest to Mount Doom is a testament to his unwavering spirit and inherent goodness.
Sam embodies the idea that the smallest person can change the course of the future, a theme that resonates deeply within Tolkien's epic.
Sam's heroism is not marked by the sword or the staff but by his compassion, resilience, and the simple acts of kindness and friendship he extends to Frodo, even in the face of overwhelming darkness. It's his emotional strength and moral compass that guide them through their darkest hours, proving that it's not just the might of arms but the strength of heart that truly makes a hero.
Sean Astin's portrayal of Samwise in Peter Jackson's film adaptation brought this beloved character to life with such warmth and sincerity, capturing the hearts of audiences around the globe.
So dear viewers, who is your pick for best unsung hero - the one that made the movie better and the ending perfect just because of their unforgettable performance?

What the Ghost? - The Devil’s Dance & Highgate Cemetery
So I have heard The Devil's Dance before, never listened to the Highgate Cemetery though. So these are my very first thoughts on that one.
The Devil's Dance
"We’ll be peering into the murky depths of history this week, unraveling the story of a deadly plague that spread terror across Europe for centuries." I mean, the title Devil's Dance says it all, but after just this sentence I knew it was the Dancing Plague.
How many puns and silly sound effects can you cram into a podcast? XDDD
"Being up close and personal with the supernatural all day can really wreak havoc with your nerves at night! That’s why I need the best possible mattress to help me drift off to sleep. Luckily, I have my Bedcetera mattress so I can rest in peace!" Ah yes, mattress sponsors in podcasting...
"But one of the strangest cases occurred in 1237 in a town called Erfurt, Germany. Records from the time say that, for one day, a hundred children started feverishly dancing, moving as one all the way to Arnstadt, over twelve miles away, before all collapsing of exhaustion, their feverish movements stopped as suddenly as they started. Though the facts about the children of Erfurt are hidden in the depths of history, their story lives on in the fearsome tale of the Pied Piper." This is apparently a very famous folktale even internationally. Wikipedia calls it a legend? I don't think that term fits. It's called "Sage" in German, which derives from the verb "sagen" - to speak, to say, to tell. Or "Gesagtes" - something that has been said or told. Like... tale! Folktale. In German, a legend (it's literally just "Legende") is distinct from a Sage or Märchen (fairytale), but still close. The English "Saga" also wouldn't fit, that sounds way too epic and heroic. But the German "Sage" does also have its origins in the Old High German term "Saga". Dug a bit into legend. That term comes from the Medieval Latin "legenda" which means "that, which is to read", or "to be read". So a legend got primarily passed down in written form, and Sagen in verbal form, therefore changing ever so slightly over the years. There is no English Wikipedia page for Sagen, it's a very regional label. Boy, that escalated quickly...
"What The Ghost? listeners get a month’s membership for free! No need for a code; (voice climbing higher) they already know who you are! (still at a markedly higher register) SparksFly: Privacy is just another word for loneliness?!" That's the Eye, right? Or is it Web? It's on the Web... But secrets (*cough* search history *cough*) revealed is usually Eye. And, the Eye is the... Fly in the Web! (I know, it's called sparks flying when two people are obviously attracted to each other. But I also want in on the pun fun!) Also this is sponsor section is glorios xD
"Historians, police officers, and city planners who exhume the bodies find them looking mutilated or mutated. Reports describe skeletons with too many bones, limbs that are too long, and joints that bend in a way that the best doctors claim they should not." A bit of Flesh? (too many bones) Or a bit of the Spiral (long limbs). There's certainly something Spiral-y to it.
Highgate Cemetery
Looked for pictures of the Highgate Cemetery on Google. It's beautiful!
"And remember, that those tombs that do lock, always do so from the outside." Yeah, I mean who's supposed to lock it from the inside? A vampire???
Ah, the names were changed. I mean it is very recent history, so super understandable. David Farrant got changed into Daniel Tarrant. And the original Sean Manchester got changed into Shane Sheffield. Very clever!
While we're at the Highgate Trivia, check this out: "The Highgate Vampire appears as a villain in the Dark Horse comics series Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Nine. The Highgate Vampire is revealed to be, not a vampire, but an insectoid demon that feeds off its victims' emotional trauma." lol
"While Daniel claimed to have seen a tall man in a hat striding across the cemetery grounds" Oh god, I'm sitting alone in a wide open living room with big windows, it’s dark and my spouse already went to sleep... Okay... I am not my fear. The Hat Man is a very common image. People suffering from sleep paralysis might know about it or have actually seen it. I don't know why this certain hallucination is so wide-spread, and I don't wanna look it up right now, that shit gets me.
"Webly always knows what I want to do next. And the best part is, I never have to worry whether I can trust anything on the net because Webly tells me I can. Don't think, just webley.com! " Okay so this is very easy. Web.
"To get your first box for half price, just enter the code, MEATCUTE." Pffffffft, that after we just listened to Jon and Martin's meet-cute yesterday xD (also Flesh, of course. That is where Toby Carlisle from MAG 18 got his meat from!)

Best Animated Movies on Netflix for a Visual Feast
1. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)

Sequels released over a decade after the first film are always a gamble, but Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was one of multiple films from 2022 (Top Gun: Maverick, Avatar: The Way of Water) that actually improved upon its predecessor. Eleven years after the first Puss in Boots, the eponymous rascally cat has now burned through eight of his nine lives on his various adventures, reteaming with Kitty Softpaws in pursuit of the Last Wish, which would restore his lives. Along the way, he tries to outrun Goldilocks — hoping to attain the Last Wish for herself — and a menacing wolf who mysteriously stalks Puss. Like other DreamWorks films post-Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the blend of 2-D and 3-D is striking in its visual texture, particularly in action sequences, but its darkly authentic themes of anxiety and the value of friendship resonate most of all.
2. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017)
Tumblr media
EW grade: B+ (read the review)
Director: David Soren
Cast: Kevin Hart, Ed Helms, Nick Kroll, Thomas Middleditch, Jordan Peele, Kristen Schaal

The wildly popular Captain Underpants book series has kept kids entertained since 1997, but it wasn't until 20 years later that the tighty-whities-clad hero made it to the big screen. The First Epic Movie centers on George and Harold, fourth-grader best friends who create the Captain Underpants comic book and hypnotize their strict principal into becoming the superhero — who doesn't actually have superpowers. Kid-friendly without being too mind-numbing to their parents, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie has "charm to spare," praises EW's critic, noting it works "mostly because it never tries to be more or less than what it is." It also spawned a series on Netflix, The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, which ran from 2018 to 2020.
3. The Angry Birds Movie (2016)
Tumblr media
EW grade: B (read the review)
Director: Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly
Cast: Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Sean Penn, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, Peter Dinklage
While it may be damning with faint praise to give credit to The Angry Birds Movie for not being a total disaster...it really could've been much worse. Based on the wildly popular app of the same name, the film follows Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), a talking bird who comes to suspect that his island's new pig inhabitants have malicious intent. Your mileage may vary depending on your tolerance for punny/juvenile humor, but as EW's review notes, the film "delivers a mildly diverting mix of winky meta-jokes and moral lessons, cannily aimed at both the next generation of tiny consumers and their more sophisticated parents.
4. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022)
Tumblr media
Director: Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson
Cast: Ewan McGregor, David Bradley, Gregory Mann, Burn Gorman, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, Tim Blake Nelson, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton
Codirectors Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson transport the classic story of Pinocchio to World War II-era Italy in this meticulously crafted stop-motion animated film. Following the death of his young son, carpenter Geppetto cuts down a tree and carves a wooden boy, who is subsequently brought to life and dubbed Pinocchio. As the boy ventures to the outside world, he is met with dark forces that attempt to use and corrupt him, all against the backdrop of Benito Mussolini's reign as leader of Fascist Italy. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is a darker take on the tale compared to the well-known Disney adaptation (which also received a far-inferior live-action remake in 2022). From the fraught setting to the detailed creature designs, del Toro and Gustafson create a distinct world while providing valuable life lessons to viewers of all ages. The film became the first Netflix production to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
5. The Sea Beast (2022)
Tumblr media
Director: Chris Williams
Cast: Karl Urban, Zaris-Angel Hator, Jared Harris, Marianne Jean-Baptiste
Lights, camera, VPNaction! Elevate your movie nights with NordVPN. 🎥🔒secure your connection and Download NordVPN . Click now to unlock global cinematic thrills!
A brave orphan girl named Maisie stows away aboard a ship of sea monster hunters in The Sea Beast, helmed by Big Hero 6's co-director Chris Williams. The sailors are renowned for their hunting abilities, though their status is threatened by their society's admiral, who wishes to replace them. They go out on one last hunt to track down a powerful sea beast called the Red Bluster, but, as Maisie soon discovers, the creatures may not have the kind of malicious intent for which they've come to be known. With dazzling colors, fast-paced thrills, and classical storytelling, it's easy to see why The Sea Beast became Netflix's most watched animated original film as of October 2022, according to the streamer. The film also earned a Best Animated Feature nomination at the Oscars, following a wave of critical praise.

This is the way the world gets saved. Not with a bang but a fire.
Or so the "Servant" finale tells us.
Or maybe the amusing twist at the end implies that nothing truly ever ends. Poor Julian, heh.
Regardless, what a triumph of the Gothic horror tradition that last episode was. Extravagantly redeeming both Leanne and Dorothy in a few minutes.
The series had been building up to an epic confrontation between these two women for four whole seasons and when it finally went there, it didn't disappoint.
Instead of letting them burn the world and each other while fighting though, "Servant" shows us that sometimes compassion can be the greatest sword.
Leanne only ever became the villain, because she could not see herself as the heroine. Her destiny was to help people in pain and eventually save humanity, but her obsession and fierce love for Dorothy was what made her selfish--what made her gradually embrace her dark side.
Leanne had some sort of Oedipus complex because of the neglect and emotional abuse she'd suffered at her mother's cruel hands as a child. So no wonder that when Dorothy showed her genuine love on that roof, Leanne instantly regained her humanity. "That was the one thing I wanted." Kindness and (maternal) affection.
At the same time, Dorothy was finally allowed to own her mistake(s), properly grieve the loss of her child, find catharsis and have a new beginning with her husband.
"[Giving me back my child] was the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me," she said to Leanne. "But you shouldn't do it [bring the baby back to life] again."
And she was right, because grief can also be an act of love.
My only criticism is that the finale should have been longer than the previous episodes, because I think that Dorothy needed more time to come to terms with the truth and fight her grief in an organic way. The transition from Dorothy fighting Sean and Julian to Dorothy having that emotionally intense moment with Leanne on that roof felt a little rushed.
Anyhow, the series is not flawless, but it gets more unhinged and character-driven each season, revealing deeper layers.
Lauren Ambrose gives a powerful performance, especially post season 1. Toby Kebbell as Dorothy's husband, Rupert Grint as Dorothy's brother and a lot of recurring actors were just as on point.
Anyone that loves
comedy horror and camp,
Lauren Ambrose,
the gothic and supernatural elements on "Yellowjackets,"
the cult stuff on the above series,
Misty's obsession with Natalie (similarity: loving and clinging to someone so fiercely you cause them harm),
and the June/Serena dynamic on "The Handmaid's Tale" (the Hulu series, not the book),
should give "Servant" a try.

What are your favorite books in Spanish?
hi! and sorry that this question has been sitting in my inbox, but that's mostly because I'm ashamed to confess I haven't read Literature in Spanish extensively outside of school. School can do that to you.
Most of the stuff I liked there was poetry; I read Quevedo and Rubén Darío and Martí (if you want a Martí recommendation, Ismaelillo, a book of poems dedicated to his son is quite endearing) and García Lorca, and Bécquer and Neruda and Quevedo and Lope de Vega... you get the gist.
I always particularly hated Neruda. And García Márquez. A lot.
Horacio Quiroga being a national author is someone I read a lot and liked his stuff; the Cuentos de la Selva are very sweet and I like them a lot as stories for children. After reading stories by Edgar Allan Poe this year for a book club (Quiroga is called the Modernist Edgar Allan Poe often in Spanish speaking literary circles), my appreciation for his horror stuff grew, specially his ability to create mood and set up stories in just a few lines. Like how, for example, El Almohadón de Plumas makes set up and mood in two lines:
Su luna de miel fue un largo escalofrío. Rubia, angelical y tímida, el carácter duro de su marido heló sus soñadas niñerías de novia.
Boom! That's what I call economy!
I also read a lot of minor national writers like Serafín J. García (Juan el Zorro) and Juan José Morosoli. Morosoli in particular has a story that fascinates me in its simplicity and hidden meaning, that I do recommend a lot: El Viaje Hacia el Mar. There's even a movie for it!
There are some books I have never fully finished, but they are so important and classic I do always recommend them:
Don Quijote de la Mancha, which I suspect most English speakers do think of as "so Cervantes is the Spanish Shakespeare, ergo, Don Quixote is like reading Shakespeare", but that's mostly true on the humorous side. This novel is mainly affectionate parody of chivalry novels, and some of the scenes are hilarious. It's like the Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey of chivalry novels.
El Gaucho Martín Fierro, because that epic is so classic terms coined in it became part of the slang of Rioplatense Spanish, and also, stuff like this:
"Los hermanos sean unidos porque esa es la ley primera. Tengan unión verdadera en cualquier tiempo que sea, porque si entre ellos se pelean, los devoran los de afuera"
El Poema del Cid. I don't think this one needs an explanation.
El Conde Lucanor. This one is less well known, but it is a collection of tales, where the count asks a question, and his adviser Patronio tells him a tale to present his advice. It's just that flavor of Spanish medieval literature.
Speaking of which, for the Catholics I do recommend Gonzalo de Berceo's Loores de Nuestra Señora, which is... basically that, tales of miracles and praise to the Virgin Mary.
Also, for the Catholics, and English speaking Catholics that are proficient in Spanish, I beg you to read St Teresa the Great, anything by her, because she was amazing and grounded and had such a zest and humor, and pretty much every English translation I have picked up turns it down a lot. Like, there's this one in the public domain that is not only horrifically Jesuitical, but it also turns the delightful "entre los pucheros anda el Señor" (the Lord ambles between the stews") into "the Lord goes with you in your duties, even to the kitchen", and considering how little known her absolute spot on description of life as "una mala noche en una mala posada" ("a bad night at a bad b&b") is, I fear it might have suffered a similar fate. But I think the matter of translating St Teresa should go into another post XD
So... what else? There must be more stuff, literature wise, but I'm blanking now.
When it comes to philosophy I also haven't read that much. I did read and found SUPER interesting Ortega y Gasset's Ideas y Creencias, in the way it highlights the closeness between scientific discovery and fantastic imagination. It was an eye opener.
Something I read last year, which is a classic of Uruguayan essay, is José Enrique Rodó's Ariel. It's an address to the youth of the Americas and I think it is very representative of the spirit of its time, some things are applicable today more than they were back in the day.
But the philosopher I have read the most in Spanish is Carlos Vaz Ferreira. Vaz Ferreira is a peculiar guy, because while most of his stuff isn't like, NEW or GROUNDBREAKING, his approach to philosophy in analytical ways that recognize the limitations of human thinking without despair is VERY refreshing, specially in terms of what is the late 1800s and early 1900s.
And this is all my brain is willing to provide today. I'm sorry I couldn't be more specific and varied in my response :(

Network of Lies: The Epic Saga of Fox News, Donald Trump, and the Battle for American Democracy
Tumblr media
Network of Lies: The Epic Saga of Fox News, Donald Trump, and the Battle for American Democracy by Brian Stelter EPUB
Fox News paid almost a billion dollars in legal settlements to bury the contents of this explosive account of the network's blatant attempts to manipulate the truth, mislead the public, and influence our elections--from the New York Times bestselling author of Hoax. The ongoing criminal trials of Donald Trump are also a trial for the nation he once led. We are undergoing a stress test of American democracy, the rule of law, and the very notion of a shared political reality. Can we achieve accountability for premeditated assaults on democracy and what forms should accountability take?
In Network of Lies, New York Times bestselling author Brian Stelter answers these questions by weaving together private texts, unpublished emails, depositions, and other primary sources to tell the chilling story of Trump's alleged conspiracy to steal the 2020 election, and the right-wing media's mission to put him back in office in 2024.
Trump couldn't have convinced millions of Americans of the Big Lie without Fox News. From the moment Joe Biden became president-elect in 2020, Fox hosts fueled a fire of misinformation and violence by spreading Trump's tales of election fraud and suppressing the truth. Come January, Sean Hannity insisted Trump needed to stop listening to "crazy people" who swore he could stay in power, but it was too late--thousands of Trump's deluded followers had stormed the Capitol and Trump operatives had breached Dominion Voting Systems' voting machines in Georgia.
Now the 2020 lies are at the center of numerous indictments and his reelection campaign, but Trump is not the only one under fire. The once-untouchable Rupert Murdoch has been held accountable. Dominion's legal war, chronicled in-depth for the first time here, revealed that the ninety-two-year-old Fox chairman knew Trump's lies were dangerous but he allowed the lies to fill Fox's airwaves because, as his "pain sponge" Suzanne Scott admitted, telling the truth was "bad for business."
Network of Lies goes inside the chat rooms, board rooms, and court rooms where the pro-Trump media's greed and selfishness were exposed. Featuring Stelter's "thorough and damning" (The New York Times) investigative prowess and direct quotations so shocking they read like fiction, Network of Lies is the definitive origin story of Trump's attempt to tear down the guardrails of American democracy, and an urgent plea to learn from past mistakes as we head into 2024's pivotal presidential election.
The book is a gift for you, friends
