Chen Dongfan’s new exhibition: Long Past Dawn, Pirates and Poets Whistle in the Dark, at the Fou Gallery in New York is an extremely topical artistic event.

The exhibit features two new series of Chen oil paintings: Poster and Story and one last major oil painting “Rise From The Ashes”. Curator Lynn Hai explains that the title of the exhibition is a combination of the titles of three main works of his series. Chen Dongfan, who lives and works in New York, has decided to undergo self-quarantine and had to give up making his paintings in his studio. So from his apartment, he focused his new artistic creation on small works of the size similar to an open book.

The Poster series, made on rice paper and plastic wrapping paper, highlights the artist’s feelings about confinement in the home due to the pandemic. The works are made with strong and vigorous colors. The energy of color outlines distorted figures that accentuate the state of confusion, suffering, trauma, and inner struggle, created by fragility and insecurity. The spaces of the pandemic and isolation may be too rigid or too small. But the deafening silence allows the artist to find his own voice and allows mastery of his mind. The fragility that Chen encounters brings out the small nuances and brings greater self-awareness. Focus, listen to his own feelings and re-elaborate them in dynamics and gestures. Pain takes shape in color.

The artist in his artworks invites us and urges us to stay at home, a conscious and generous choice to actively contribute to slowing the spread of the virus. From home, as curator Hai told, Chen began to draw inspired by online information, reading book, and literature. He has focused his attention on mental and cultural growth, on the study and deepening of myths, legends, and stories. He re-elaborates everything in the realm of his imagination and, passing from the visualization of the brain, materializes the collection of concepts on paper.

Chen, who has been confined for a long time to creating works on a small desk, makes this limitation a starting point to free the mind, search, learn new information, make it his own and undertake a personal creative process. The artist navigating, imagining, finds, and decides the route to his destination. He land and sow on a fertile ground the ideas and visions for his new series “Story” in the form of a diptych: on the left side there is a line of a literary text in the center of the sheet; on the right side, his impressions are abstractly captured.

The mythical elements in his oil paintings are the result of a development path of the details of stories and symbols formulated over time, ancient beliefs that are transformed into universal when the artist paints a vision updated to the contemporary. He takes from the past to understand the present and manage the future. Mythology still plays a very important role in contemporary society, it can be found in different contexts, and in countless forms, quotes, interpretations. It’s present through the small daily rituals that anchor people in time and shape a day. Routines, habits, traditions, and celebrations generate significant and precious experiences in the inner world, these are handed down from generation to generation transforming, adapting, changing, but always remaining themselves and bearers of the same hope and optimism. The exuberant colors outlining detailed shapes decline time, allowing at the same time to travel in time, escape from time, rewind the time, stop the time, live the time. The artworks painted and narrated in “Story” bring to light the constant component of the cyclical nature of life: each phase of transition and transformation, enhances and confirms the importance of each unique process and moment.

As curator Lynn Hai points out, Chen’s two most recent series show more figurative images, unlike the previous ones, mainly of abstract typology. In fact, we can grasp the influence of the in-depth analyses carried out in recent months. Some have experienced the fear of being alone during this time, as isolation can be uncomfortable or even frightening. Social distancing seems brutal, as humans take comfort in each other’s presence. Chen, on the other hand, has transformed isolation into a new possibility and opportunity to reflect on the relationship between art and society. His artistic meditation is captured in the changes in the narrative form of the stories, which allow to visualize a harmony that combines brush movements between pauses and slowdowns to focus on certain moments, of stories and myths that have settled over time. It shows us that being alone also means managing a skill. Loneliness has always been in human history the companion of hermits and religious, philosophers, researchers, scholars, and artists. However lonely one may feel, human beings have always experienced isolation to undertake a path of understanding. So this makes this experience a time of human communion. Even Chen absorbed between poetry and literature has plunged into the sea of time, between mythology and narration in search of his own spiritual and universal vision to be expressed with his art. In this way, Chen invites us to accept isolation, to let it take us deeper into ourselves, into our subconscious, reminding every one of their own individual purpose.

The balance that Chen reaches culminates in his oil painting “Rise From The Ashes“, the first work created after self-isolation, when he finally returns to his studio. The strong contrast of colors identifies a concrete and definitive point that coincides between an end and a new beginning of the life cycle. The intuitive and lively brushstrokes that envelop and the use of vibrant colors as well as evoke a rebirth appear as a celebratory dance, a feast to the new life, a ritual of thanksgiving, the image of a dancing fire. The color takes on folkloric characteristics, of celebration.

He reconciles his inner self with the surrounding world, his mind reaches a state of stillness, tranquility, and clarity. Through art and experience, Chen creates a whole, which is an integral part of the constant and continuous flow of life, reality, and what creates a bond with the spirit.

For several months now, the Covid-19 pandemic and the consequent problems related to health, economic precariousness, and social justice have taken the daily anxiety levels of many people to the extreme. Even if “Nothing’s sure about tomorrow” as Lorenzo de’ Medici wrote in Canzona di Bacco, this doesn’t mean we have to surrender. “Rise From The Ashes” thus becomes a message of good luck and hope. In this period, high-stress peaks are highly harmful, and therefore the ability to understand the situation, calm, and resilience become great allies in facing this difficult moment and approaching the solution. When things get difficult, art is that caress that calms the soul, the universal language that many can understand regardless of their cultural background. It connects the senses, penetrates the eyes, reaches the ears, opens the heart, and tunes the mind.

⌈ THE STAR reverse ⇁ The opposite of Yoongi: not keeping it very naked in here. The upright card shows a nude woman pouring water from two cups. Hence a strong connection to the card of sexuality, TWO OF CUPS. Everything is very gentle and positive in that scenery. But then, the reversed card rather shows us that Jin doesn’t feel too thrilled watching other people film or write or photograph sex. Like in Tae’s case, he becomes bored, it’s all the same to him. ⌈ EIGHT OF CUPS ⇁ Now you’d think — and I thought, kinda — we’d get the master of erotica right here. And he’s had one hell of a reputation for that. Think of the ever-infamous Yaman TV interview where BTS were super upfront and revealing about their taste and what they watch privately. With especially Namjoon having the lion’s share. But this card says otherwise if his current state is concerned. The EIGHT OF CUPS shows a man wandering off into the night, leaving eight cups behind him. I think what that means is, he’s moved on. Namjoon’s cravings aren’t as strong as they used to be, nor does he have the time. He knows it won’t fix his loneliness or answer the questions of life. He might be on the search for different things to fulfill him, or ignore much of his hormones in favor for his career. Not that he didn’t dabble in it, he sure did, but that chapter is slowly closing and what’s next he doesn’t really know yet. He thinks about family and being a father, so the smaller and more risque pleasures become less significant. Desire, too. Ye olde soul syndrome is kicking in. The card is also centered around introspection, a quest for self, all these higher topics that aren’t the most grounded and don’t leave much space for being horny. Joon is simply to preoccupied and on the move. He sees porn as a distraction from his real self at this point, and he’s not the type to feel satiated after masturbating to something, similar to Jin and Taehyung. Instead, I think he carries that energy elsewhere, hence the wanderer going from A to B onto a mountain. In short, Namjoon naturally grew out of it by becoming more, well: Namjoon. He’s left a lot behind, he’s choosing self-development over temporary fun, and he will ponder a lot on the topic, the hows and whys and whats more often than not. So, he’s passed the baton to Yoongi and Jungkook if you will, and keeps a low profile as of now.

Velvety Rich and Sickly Sweet

Once there was an African American girl who lived in a big city. Her name was Venessa. As a little girl, she loved playing with dolls and getting dressed up. Tea parties with her friends were a favorite pastime. She adored candy, cake and anything sweet, a craving that lasted for the rest of her life. She dreamed of becoming a famous celebrity.

As Venessa got older, computers and phones started to arrive. It wasn’t long before she got into social media. She pursued a career in fashion and posted videos of herself in velvet dresses baking cakes and seductively sucking on candies for the males. Her videos went viral and she basked in the online limelight.

But the more well-known she got, the more she distanced herself from her former family and friends. Venessa soon partook in gossip, laughing at other women and being a self-centered bully. She enjoyed the reactions of hurt people less well-off than her. This was especially true when she became a risqué model and dancer.

Soon enough, all of Venessa’s actions came back full circle. Venessa soon found herself as a target of bullying and racism. She received one hate comment after another…from the n word, to bad things about her black curly ponytails. Some even called her fat and fake.

Venessa was furious…so furious that she began to track down the bullies and kill them with knives. Childish laughter could be heard among the screaming victims. Venessa covered her tracks well…after all, no one suspected famous model to be a killer. However, she kept pictures of herself posing with her victims holding her knife.

But she was soon found out, and almost got arrested. Venessa soon spiraled down into madness, having a crazed breakdown. Distraught over the mean comments, she overdosed on skinny creating drugs. Her body couldn’t take the amount and she died before she was discovered by the police. A mirror was in one hand while a headless doll was in another. Venessa died at age 22 in 2012, the same year as Vaggie.

Venessa soon arrived in Hell and became known as Velvet. Velvet was a fitting name, due to both her wealth and her fondness for red velvet cakes. She even made an Instagram account called radvelvetcakes. Rad was a word meaning “cool” and “trendy,” the things she always aspired to be. With her status as an overlord, it was…well, a piece of cake.

Velvet would’ve been demon food if not for two Overlords who decided to take her in. Velvet soon had two friends and fellow Overlords: “Daddy” Vox and “Daddy” Valentino. The former was a wealthy TV demon, who owned all the TV stations in Hell. The latter was a moth pimp, who owned Hell’s number one porn studio. Together, the three Overlords made a near unstoppable fearsome force to be reckoned with. They become known as the Triple Vs. The three of them often hosted lavish parties on yachts and in fancy soirees, electronic music and dubstep pulsing through the air. All three of them controlled the “stimulants” of Hell: TV, drugs, porn, social media and food.

Vox had a flat screen TV for a head and wore a black suit with a large red bow tie and blue stripes going down the suit. He wore a black top hat with antennas and a teal Wi-Fi symbol on it, the same symbol on his chest. When he first came down to Hell in the 1950s, he had an old boxy TV head. But thanks to his power over electricity, he upgraded himself as the years went on. In his full demon form, the red eyed, sharp blue-toothed man could cause entire blackouts. Formerly a white man named Vincent, with black hair and icy blue eyes, Vox died from a TV falling and crushing his face. In Hell, he continued his sinful actions he did when he was alive: hooking up, doing drugs, and hosting gruesome TV shows for entertainment. TV towers were everywhere, looming like impenetrable metal fortresses. With his showman personality, he stood equal to Alastor in power, if not more.

Valentino was a light purple moth pimp with antennas and fancy coats. He had a ring of fluff around his neck with small red hearts on it. His glasses were pink and heart-shaped. He was often found lounging on couches with female “clients’ in his lap, smoking red smoke from a cigarette. The smoke itself could drug demons and make them doped up. Cruel and greedy, he enjoyed using and abusing people for his own pleasure, in particular, his porn star and worker Angel Dust. He promised love and pleasure, both of them illusions in the long run. His victims would be helpless and obedient, unable to leave and think for themselves. Valentino was originally Vasilis, a dark-skinned man from Brooklyn who also did drugs, smoked and participated in human trafficking. Valentino had died in the 1970s…and his distant relative was none other than fellow moth demon Vaggie!

And then there was Velvet herself. She was a black-skinned doll demon, short but very deadly. One of her favorite outfits was a velvet laced white dress with small hearts around it and black shapes. She wore black stockings and pink shoes with white puff balls on it. Her hair was dark pink and in two thick pigtails. She had red sclera and white irises with black pupils. Although she looked and acted like a child, she was in her twenties. Velvet was the Overlord of sweets and social media. If Harley Quinn turned into an animated doll who loved gossiping and tea parties, then that would adequately describe what Velvet was like. Velvet once sat with Vox and Valentino safe in the porn studio during the Extermination. She eagerly checked her phone and took selfies while sitting next to Vox.

Velvet could go full demon form like the other Overlords, but her power was laced with an extra dose of insanity. For in her most powerful form, she could make deadly potions to use against her enemies. Velvet was skilled enough making regular potion for perfume and to use as beauty products. But she could also make poisons and noxious gas to defeat any demon who dared disobey her and her fellow Overlords. In her most extreme form, she could magically turn her victims into sweets, absorbing their souls as she ate them! Even Vox and Valentino steered clear from her when she was in that form.

Like a doll, Velvet was doted on by Vox and Valentino, as well as her many followers. All three of them went back and forth from doting their workers to abusing them with deadly threats. Although Velvet enjoyed being spoiled, she often felt like she was treated like a child too much. She was perfectly capable of taking care of herself, even meeting up with Rosie and other wealthy ladies to eat demons in the streets. Velvet was also infamous for sometimes using demons’ blood and organs in her baking.

Yes, Velvet was living a life of luxury, perhaps second to the royal Magne family and the Eldritch family. Imagine her surprise when she found out that the princess was running a hotel to redeem sinners. She laughed it off, calling Charlie absurd. In many ways, she was similar to Seviathan, Helsa and Katie Killjoy: self-centered individuals who lived on gossip, trends, fashion and putting others down.

Velvet was frequently seen on and searched many media platforms in Hell: Voxtube, Voxflix, Voxbook, and Voxtagram. The movie and social media sites were all run by Vox, of course. His dimensional monopoly was getting closer to becoming permanent.

There was her Instagram account: “radvelvetcakes. Fun with the Overlords! Follow and comment to keep up on moth-pimp, voxtagram 8k and me!”

On July 6, 2020, Velvet posted a selfie of herself smiling on what appeared to be a dance floor decorated with green neon candy tiles.

“This is my newest account! Be sure to tell your friends! Ain’t I a cutie?”

On the same day, Velvet posted a selfie of her and Vox. Vox didn’t look very happy.

Vox said, “Chillin in the studio. Rad photo by my girl radvelvetcakes.”

On July 7, 2020, Velvet posted a picture of Valentino and Vox eating hamburgers at Hell’s version of McDonalds. Vox had his TV mouth open, a hamburger and French fries on his lap.

“Lol. Voxtagram8k is one to talk. He’s hardly as cool as he thinks he is.”

A later picture showed Valentino eating a giant chicken sandwich messily.

Valentino posted, “Picking up the goods,” as Vox and a smiling Velvet got into their limo after going to McDonalds. Vox had a bag in his hand, while Velvet carried two drinks. The McDonald’s M logo was upside down.

On July 9, 2020, Velvet posted a picture of herself showing off her manicured nails. Her sharp nails were decorated with sparkles, diamonds and little bows. The nails were extended ones. In the background, it looked like Vox’s leg was breaking down a door.

Later, Valentino mentioned that he would fuck up Velvet for posting bad pictures of him and Vox.

“Bored and missing the boys so I decided to do my nails up pretty!”

On July 10, 2020, Valentino posted a picture of Vox letting his pet shark loose on a tripping Velvet.

Valentino said, “Got her. This is the only time I’ll say this, but Vox having a giant demon pet shark actually comes in handy.”

On July 13, 2020, Velvet was seen beaming in a picture along with Vox, Valentino and their blue pet hammerhead shark.

On July 20, 2020, Valentino posted a selfie at his new club.

Valentino: “New club, new pole, anyone else wanna give it a whirl?”

Stolas: “No thank you. I’m sure even if things are new, the same slime is still around.”

When asked if Blitzo would do a dance on the pole for Valentino…

Blitzo: “No, no that won’t happen. I’m too busy with my horses and business.

Stola: It would be quite the sight. But I wouldn’t wish to see Blitzy working in Mr. Valentino’s establishment.

Stolas: Why would I ever want the rat to want such an excellent business venture?

Valentino: Watch yourself, bird.

Stolas: That’s a lot of talk for an insect.

Velvet laughed out loud as she read the comments.

On July 21, 2020, Velvet posted a selfie of herself about to eat a dirty green lollipop with a fly on it. Valentino stared in horror with wide pink eyes under his heart glasses.

“Val stopped me from eating a lollipop I found on the ground. But what he doesn’t know is that I grabbed it after he tossed it in the bin! #FreeCandy. #LivingFree. #RatsEatShitOffTheGroundAllTheTime.”

Valentino replied, “Stop, we have money! We can get you another one!”

Velvet: “It’s mystery flavored! We can do what we want!”

Vox said to Valentino: “I will not be the one cleaning the toilet tonight.”

Stolas said, “Wonderful parenting there,” and added a thumbs down.

Moxxie the imp added, “Why would anyone eat something that was on the ground?”

On July 23, 2020, Valentino posted a selfie of himself smoking, his eyes glowing pink under his shades.

Valentino said, “Dealing with Angel always puts me in a bad mood. Gonna go have some fucked up fun.”

Velvet eagerly asked, “Oooh, oooh, can I join?”

Valentino replied, “Sure, why the fuck not?”

On July 25th, Velvet went on a killing mission with Vox and Valentino. Velvet was seen in a picture, beaming while holding a knife in her hands. The blade was stained with purple cake frosting.

Valentino said, “Thanks for the backup today, baby doll.”

Velvet responded, “It was so much fun! Wish we could do it more often.”

Valentino added, “Always up for a little messy fun.”

On July 26th, Velvet posted a picture of herself doing a “duck” face while holding a piece of pink and teal cake on a plate. The rest of the cake was on a plate on a table, with suspicious bloodstains in the frosting. Nearby, a blue demon stood holding a piece while his right shoulder had a bloody bandage on it.

“So it turned out it was cake!” Velvet posted. Apparently, Velvet had thought that the demon was made of cake, so she had used a knife to slice his shoulder. Then she sliced up the cake and to her delight, it was, indeed, cake. Velvet had gleefully watched videos on VoxTube that showed artistically made cakes that looked like ordinary objects. This led to a meme or an online joke that everything was secretly cake. Velvet briefly wondered if she was cake herself.

On August 4, 2020, Velvet posted a video of a blue Vox writing down notes and a red Valentino screaming at him. Vox remained unfazed.

Velvet said: “Laughing my fucking ass off!”

Valentino wasn’t happy and said, “The fuck? You were supposed to advertise my company, not, whatever the fuck this is. Cute drawings, though.”

Velvet: “Thank you.”

Valentino: “Lucky you’re a crazy cute bitch.”

Vox said, “Ur lucky I have a built in mute button. Also, this is perfect! <3.” Vox was the more easygoing, “dad” type individual in comparison to Valentino.

On August 5, 2020, Velvet happily posed in a picture, holding a pink balloon she was about to pop with a pin. In front of her was an illuminated cake that read “Happy Birthday Gasu,” in reference to an artist who made character art for the show. Valentino had a scowl on his face as his red jacket got messy, the hearts on his fluff turning into broken hearts.

“Celebrated Gasuguma’s birthday with cake! Love his amazing pictures of Vox, Valentino and me! Happy Birthday!”

Valentino complained, “Yeah some celebration, stained my fucking jacket. Cake was good, though.”

On August 6, 2020, valentine posted a picture of Vox in a dark room with two cups of soda in his hands.

Valentino: “5:30 am. I asked Vox to get me a strawberry iced coffee several hours ago. The fucker shows up now with half a finished diet soda! Do I kill him, yes or no?”

Velvet was annoyed. “So that’s where my fucking diet soda went.”

Valentino: “Oh my fucking god, he didn’t even buy it for me.”

Vox: “I’ll send Vark the Shark to deliver your drink next time.”

Valentino: “You just wanted to see me.”

On August 7, 2020, Vox’s picture showed his TV screen cracked and one of his antennas crooked. Vox’s screen turned to colored bars and Valentino was grinning in the picture.

Valentino: “Thanks for the soda, Voxy. Don’t fuck up my order next time.”

Velvet sadly says: “My dads are fighting.”

Valentino: “Don’t worry baby doll, not my fault, Vox is a dumbass.”

Vox: “Velvet, you’re literally the same age as us, wtf?”

Sir Pentious: “Ha ha ha, that’s hilariously evil, Valentino. Or may I call you Val, we should “hang” soon?”

Stolas: “You can do better.”

Vox: “Time to get a new screen. Ungrateful rat. #notmyboyfriend.”

Valentino: “You woke me up. Sorry not sorry.”

Stolas said to Vox: “I would say you could do better, but I’m not entirely sure you can.”

Valentino: “Go fuck an imp.”

Stolas: Gladly.

Valentino: Sad.

Stolas: What’s sad is traipsing around in a giant tacky coat trying too hard to be intimidating.

Valentino: What’s sadder is watching you thirst over a tiny-dicked imp 24/7.

Stolas: From what I’ve heard, he has a bigger dick than whatever you have between your legs.

Valentino: From who? Lol. You obviously don’t have anyone, I don’t see nothing on your insta other than a thirsty dried old man.

Stolas: …

Stolas: You only like Vox because he can display glowing lamps on his screen, dirty moth.

Velvet laughed out loud, this was the most fun she had in a while.

On August 17 2020, Valentino posted another selfie.

Valentino: “Got some business to take care of.”

Stolas: I knew disco was dead, but I didn’t know it went to Hell.” Another successful roast.

Velvet said: “Looking pretty dapper, Val. Don’t worry, I know Vox will see it!”

Valentino said to Stolas, “Don’t hate me ‘cause you ain’t me, imp fucker.”

Stolas replied, “Why would I want to be a rat?”

Valentino: “Why are you so obsessed with me, baby cake? Want me to stop by? Help remove the stick from your ass.”

Stolas: The stuck up my ass would be more pleasurable than anything you’ve got.

Velvet was laughing so hard, tears came from her eyes.

Valentino: Don’t knock it till you try it, baby. You know what they say about moths.

Stolas: That they’re little pests obsessed with light bulbs? Owls eat insects, you know.

Valentino: They can go all night.

Stolas: Well owls eat rats. Wait this came out from the wrong particular situation…

Valentino made an erotic face.

Stolas: No.

This is still a rough draft, technically, because I wanted to finish the whole thing before I put any of it online. However, a) I certainly don’t know when that will happen, and b) the prologue is old enough, and has already been read by enough people, that I figure it doesn’t much matter if I put it out there properly. I’ll save posting it on AO3 -- you know, formally -- for a later date, though.

The main character, unnamed here for what will become obvious reasons, is the brainchild of my excellent friend James, and so is the rough idea behind this "novelization." Journey, of course, belongs to thatgamecompany. If you’re not familiar with Journey, what are you doing! Go watch it! It’s gorgeous and touching and only an hour and a half long!

The inside of the tent was like a womb. The thick red cloth that formed its draping roof and walls simultaneously kept most of the sunlight out and transformed what little entered into a rich, deep glow. The fabric was densely woven enough to keep the wind, usually always welcome, out as well: the air was hot, so hot that it felt almost solid – or perhaps liquid. Shiningchild, seated with legs crossed in the center of the tent, leaned away from her work and took a deep breath, relishing the diminished ache in her back and the slight sensation of coolness triggered by her inhalation. Yes, more like a liquid.

Probably that had been done on purpose. This ritual was about beginnings, after all.

She hunched forward once more and adjusted the bundle of cloth that rested on her bare black legs, her ears stiff and alert with renewed focus. Only a few more stitches. And then –

She shook her head and concentrated. Push the gold thread in. Pull it back out. Make sure it aligned with the stitch before it, as it did with the stitch before that. Her robe had to be perfect; it would shame her family if it were anything but, and all of this was unconventional enough.

She chirped softly, no louder than breathing. She loved her family, and she wanted their pride, but there were more directions to travel than east and south.

And I want to visit them all.

Done.

She tied the thread in the birth knot, then wound the remaining thread into a bundle and tied it the same way. It hung just so on the side of her cloak, a little golden hint at future growth. Whether it came or not – and she hoped it would – the possibility was always there.

Now, for a few precious moments, Shiningchild had the opportunity to hurry, to burn some excited, nervous energy. She gathered her robe and hood in one arm and stood quickly, then pulled the fat rope that wound down from the roof of the birthing tent with her free hand. The long, slender white pennant on top of the tent would now be flapping stiffly in the breeze. The Named would be here soon.

Moving with barely contained eagerness, Shiningchild hurriedly juggled hood and robe as she shook the latter out and pulled it over her thin frame. Its familiar weight encircled her comfortingly – but was it just slightly heavier from the threads she had sewn onto the hem?

Anticipation rose within her like a tangible force, making her tremble. She took another deep breath, this one calming as well as cooling, and pulled on her hood with deliberately steady fingers. Then she folded her hands beneath her robe and sat facing the tent flaps, staring hard at the vertical line of light that shone between its closed halves.

Her attention was immediately rewarded. Not even a minute passed before three authoritative whistles sounded from just outside the tent. The calls were a challenge that demanded an immediate response; Shiningchild sat as straight as she could and gave it.

A pause. The line of light half-disappeared as someone stood directly before it, moving aside the rocks that weighed down the tent flaps. Then, finally, the fabric parted and three figures glided in: the Named of Shiningchild’s greater family.

Shiningchild chirped again, this time quietly, respectfully. The Named always warranted such regard: their scarves were long and full, each with the Fullest Circle trailing at the end. Between the three of them, they possessed several centuries of wisdom, knowledge, and experience, and they had led their greater family – and occasionally, with the help of other Named, even the whole Southern tribe – with strength and grace for much longer than Shiningchild had been alive.

Now, nodding wordlessly to acknowledge her greeting, they sat across from Shiningchild in a neat row, their scarves settling gently to the sands around them. The tent flaps jerked briefly as someone outside replaced the stones, but Shiningchild barely noticed. For a long, silent moment she and the Named gazed at each other, the air between them thick with potential. Then:

“Many, many thousands of years ago,” one of the Named began, his voice heavy with ritual. “There was the dark. And in the dark was the Mountain. And the light arose and shone from the Mountain, and as each beam spread across the earth it became a symbol. Before anyone was there to speak or read or be shaped by these symbols, they existed.”

“But they were not alone not for long,” continued another. “For as the light spread across the earth it left new things in its wake, things that came into being in the fertile spaces between dark and light: birds, and soft ground, and things to grow in it. And, finally, our Ancestors. Those before.��

“For a long time they thrived in what the Mountain had given them,” the third said. Her voice, as quiet and ritualistic as her fellows’ at first, slowly reached a crescendo as she spoke. “They learned to speak, and thus to create. They learned to use the gifts they had been granted. They grew, and grew wise. They let the Mountain guide them, name them, and raise them to new heights!”

A deep, ringing silence. Shiningchild held her breath, enraptured.

“Then – things changed,” the third of the Named finished, her voice soft once more.

The first speaker took up the story. “Much of the past is lost to us, but we know that the Ancestors are gone – destroyed. The earth was given over to sand and desert, and what remained of the Ancestors’ works began to wear away.”

Again, as one speaker finished, another began. “After many centuries, two new beams of light spread from the Mountain. Our people were born from one ray of light, and the people of the East from the other. Over the years we multiplied and spread through the desert. We learned symbols and speech, and to avoid the dangerous history of the Ancestors. Their mistakes, whatever they were, are not to be ours.”

“But some, with curiosity unquenched, soon began to find their way to the top of the Mountain,” finished the third. “Or to try, for only those who strayed from the paths of their journeys returned to pass their stories on to their people. To seek the Mountain, too, is death: because of our ancestry, its favor is denied to us. But we live on regardless.”

“And here is the now,” said the first.

“And here is the now,” agreed the second.

“And here is the now,” concluded the third.

Another pause. The third of the Named sighed, and shifted in her seat.

“Shiningchild,” she said, “I speak to you now not as First Glint of Water in the Heart of Midday Sands, not as one of the Named, but as a loving and concerned member of your family. Are you sure you wish to follow this custom? Even now, there is no shame on you, or on us, if you do not. There is no single path to wisdom, or to experience, or to the hallowed. And we cannot help you as much as we would wish: so many of the old ways have been forgotten through disuse, and I know you have been unable to find a companion, despite searching the entire southern tribe.”

Shiningchild bowed her head. “Elder cousin,” she said as humbly as she could, “I am sure.”

Another sigh. Then, the faint rustle of cloth as all three of the Named stood.

“Very well, then,” First Glint of Water in the Heart of Midday Sands said, formal once more. “Shiningchild, Shiningchild, Shiningchild. Kneel. Be born. Receive the beginning of your truename.”

Trembling, Shiningchild turned and shifted into a kneeling position, head bent to reveal the hem of her hood as the three Named gathered close behind her. “May you always find what you seek,” finished First Glint of Water in the Heart of Midday Sands, and quickly, tenderly smoothed her thumb over Seeker’s forehead. “Now, come out! Begin your life! Begin your journey!”

One of the Named chimed a command, setting the embroidery on their robes and the symbols on their scarves to glowing. Outside the tent, other members of the clan hastened to pull back the flaps, letting in the fierce light of the sun. Seeker looked straight ahead and walked steadily through the threshold, out into the waiting crowd of her people. They parted before her just as the tent flaps had, leaving a broad path between them.

She looked up. Directly before her on the horizon stood the Mountain, shrouded in clouds at its base but with its summit bared to her sight. A line of light, visible despite the distance and the afternoon sun, shone from a cleft at its peak into the sky.

Behind her, she felt the Named emerge from the tent. “Seeker!” they cried in one voice, prompting a flurry of chirps and whistles from the rest of the greater family.

“Seeker!” they roared in reply, a rush of sound that filled her ears.

And: “Seeker!” she shouted back to them all with her joyful single voice, and shook her cloak in a motion she had practiced a thousand times before, and rose into the air to taste flight for the first time.

So, yes, it’s Labor Day here in the US, a national holiday. Many companies would therefore give today off to their employees, but since every day is a holiday here at Onyx Path, we had our usual Monday Meeting today, and work continues apace.

Of course, the second part of our MMN Blog title today comes from the fact that the Scion: Demigod 2e Kickstarter has been just crashing through the Stretch Goals after funding in 75 minutes! We’re all really thrilled and grateful to all of our backers for showing such fantastic support!

Putting the two together, I thought that a change of pace today that showed how some labor was done to create the elements for Scion: Demigod might be appropriate. And since I did some of that labor, I figure it’s on me to step up today and delve into the creation process for one of our latest Scion pantheon symbols.

This one is for the Apu, the Incan pantheon.

It’s usually after the writing is pretty well finalized, but not necessarily developed, that I’ll ask the project developer for notes on whichever part of the project needs a symbol. In the case of Scion, our writing and dev teams do such a deep dive into the pantheons that I could get overwhelmed just reading through the text, so in addition to letting me read that, I also ask for any ideas they might have for symbols and elements appropriate to the pantheon.

Sometimes I get easily usable ideas, and other times the needs of a visual project mean that I have to dig a bit deeper myself. In the case of the Apu, my notes scrawled on my note pad included: “golden sun disc (with link)”, “stepped pyramid”, “stone and gold”, “order/stability”, “Cusco”, “black and white llamas”.

I was good to go with the golden sun disc, and checked to see if any of the previous Scion symbols I designed went down that same visual direction. None did, so using that big hit of gold as the centerpiece became the start for the symbol. I originally considered using the foliage motif similar to what I did for the Aztec pantheon symbol as a background and surrounding next for the gold disc, but that did seem too close to other symbols and for me it just didn’t feel Incan enough.

Which is a big part of what makes these Scion symbols work, they have to feel appropriate to the pantheon. Which means we’re in the realm of the subjective, as what feels right to me may not feel right to you. But that’s the chance you take, because these are Scion symbols and they have to touch us, mean something to us, at least a bit, or we’re missing the point of the setting/game. All the raw data in the world about what should be included doesn’t help if most people aren’t connecting with that symbol.

That led me to hit the books. Yes, actual books. If I know what I want, finding 1500 images that I can use as reference for that thing is a snap with a Google search, but if I’m still looking for visuals that connect with me, then online searching just doesn’t work for me as well as paging through books about a culture. I don’t know what’s on the next page, which is the point.

One of the things I picked up on, was how striking the textiles still are in areas we’d consider Incan. Which started a whole different idea about how the color could and should work for this symbol. Bird feathers as decoration, and returning to one of the writer’s suggestions, the Incan knotted rope language called quipu. I had wanted to use it but didn’t have a way to keep the ropes and knots legible in the symbol, but with a bright textile background holding everything together, I could bring the quipu back into play.

Here’s my rough ideas page, the Apu symbol at top right representing the first pass, and the one lower left coming after I did more research:

From the rough sketch, where I’m looking at what elements can be arranged in what pattern, and where I’m thinking about but not putting down the color yet, I’ll draw out the various elements on bristol board in ink – usually with technical pens rather than anything that would give a varying line. We just need an even line.

A lot of time, if I know I want an image the same on both sides, or top and bottom, then I’ll just draw the one side and copy/flip/combine in Photoshop after scanning. The knotted ropes are on a separate page, as they required the whole sheet so I could draw them with enough detail.

Like I mentioned, these drawings get scanned in, and are really used as raw materials to copy and paste from when I start to make the whole symbol in Photoshop. Each element in the design gets its own layer, and that layer is set to Multiply in the layer menu. That way, the darkest lines stay dark, but anything in a layer “under” our line art shows through. This will become clearer when you see how the color goes in, but here’s just the line art all piled on top of each other:

At this point, it’s time to get color in there, and in this specific symbol, it’s also time to get the patterning into the Incan textile. Some of the colors only show up when the overall color is on there, so don’t worry if it seems like some of the symbols aren’t there. They are on layers that I did different layer types, like Multiply from before:

I also used the same colors for the fringe along the bottom and just drew those in loosely knowing the overall color would fall in between the other colors. Each instance of the bird symbol is on its own layer so that I could play around with size, position, layer effects, and color. I was going more for energy with the positioning and a certain lack of perfect positioning to replicate the hand-crafted nature of the textile.

Next, here it is with the red overall color. I spent a lot of time playing with the color controls to get the red I wanted, and then tweaked almost all of the little bird symbols to have their colors work with the red:

While some of the birds are now showing up, you can see a few blank spots in there. Don’t worry, those won’t show up once the other item layers get colored in.

This was good, but the thing was, it didn’t feel like fabric to me. And that’s what I wanted to really play up – the texture of the textile! I could have scanned in a cloth texture, or found one online, but in this case I went with combining layer effects and filters. I’d tell you what I did if I could remember, but here’s what it looked like without the red layer behind it:

I’m going to jump ahead here, and give you a step by step look at the big gold disk as it’s layers are painted in, but just assume that whatever I tell you about the disk, I already did in sort of the same sequence for the knotted ropes and the feathered headdress. I also started thickening the line stroke around objects to give them more heft and set them visually into the whole symbol. More on that later.

So here’s the first color for the disk, a dark golden brown:

Here’s where it really gets fun and painterly. The next layer is just yellow, with the Photoshop brush set on soft-round and at something like 25% transparency. With the lines already setting up the shapes, I just zoomed in and put yellow in keeping the brightest areas towards where the light was supposed to be hitting the disk (more from below than the traditional light from above):

Looking at it at this point, it didn’t pop enough. So I copied the yellow layer and set it to Multiply or the like and the doubled up yellow hit what I was looking for. It didn’t show up much when I was putting these sequential layer graphics together, but it’s that sort of subtle coloring that gives it the 3D look we need:

And here goes the last highlight on the gold, which was a lot closer to white to really get a bit of sparkle, plus I also created a shadow effect in two layers so that the disk would feel more like it is on top of the other elements. We want that gold disk to be the big popping thing from this graphic, and it needs to be strong to outshine the colors of the textile:

You can also see that I made the outer edge line much thicker than the others inside the symbol, so we’d have a strong edge to it so it could stand out on the page like the previous Scion symbols. Although, to be faaaair, I did reduce that thickness where the knotted ropes break out of the bottom. The ropes were being engulfed by the outline visually, plus, there’s a whole “language will be free” sort of thing going on there.

Full Moon In Libra – All We Need Is Love

FCGCT Commentary: We are moving from the mind, to the Heart… not the balancing of the two. The brain acts as a conduit while the heart processes. The mind conflicts with the Heart, and is the cause for imbalance, pain, fear, suffering and more. The mind… the ego, blocks the Heart, as it Edges God Out. Let go of the mind, and solely flow from the Heart, connected to the Unified Heart in Unity Consciousness. Every being is a reflection of us. What we see in another that triggers us exists within us, nothing is separate. When we exude and embody love, we then become love mirrors for all around us.

Full Moon In Libra – All We Need Is Love

On April 19th, 2019 we have a Full Moon in Libra. This is the 2nd Full Moon in Libra and it happens at 29°, the last degree of Libra.

The first Full Moon in Libra happened on March 21st at 0° Libra. What happened back then? These two full moons are connected. So whatever happened in your life at the time of the first Full Moon in Libra will reach a culmination now.

Libra is the sign of relationships. Have you ever wondered why is that? Is it maybe because Libra is balanced and peace-loving? Or is it something else?

If you look at the zodiac wheel, you’ll notice that Libra is the 7th sign of the zodiac, exactly opposite the 1st sign of the zodiac, Aries.

And Aries is the sign of the individual, is the sign of “I am”. The opposite of “I am” is “The Other”.

Full Moon In Libra – Me Vs. The Other

Libra is the sign of “The Other”.

Indeed, we need to get out of our Ego (Aries – ‘I am’) to be with other people. We need to understand different perspectives, different than ours.

Let’s say you’re a night owl and your partner is an early bird. You may say “Of course I understand we are different”. But then you get annoyed when they insist you wake up early on Saturday morning.

Let’s take a more difficult example. You are a democrat and your friend (if they are still your friend) is a Republican. You may tell yourself you can understand that they are different… BUT.

BUT comes every time we fail to embrace Libra’s qualities. We are all guilty of that. In a way, it’s normal to see the world through our own lenses, and anything else simply doesn’t make sense, because it doesn’t fit our mental model.

If we were all good at understanding other people life would be no fun. We are here in this world to learn and grow.

Libra And Projection

Libra is not only about our ability to notice how others are different. Libra also shows us how we can understand ourselves better, through others.

Libra’s symbol is the scales. When you go to the market to buy apples, the apples go on one side of the scale, and on the other side, we put a weighing unit.

That’s how we find out how much the apples weigh (OK, probably nobody uses the scale anymore, but that’s how it works).

You wouldn’t know how much your apples weigh if it was not for the weighing unit. In the same way, you wouldn’t know who you are (Aries) if it was not for Libra.

Libra shows us and what we project onto other people, so we can understand ourselves better.

What is projection? All those traits we are not aware of, and we put out there as belonging to others. Let’s say you are not in touch with your anger. You will project your anger onto others. People who are in touch with their anger (the angry people) will really touch a nerve in you.

Or let’s say you’re a great artist, but you are not aware of it. You will be attracted to artists because unconsciously you are looking for people who can help you get in touch with this talent you already have.

We are often attracted to, or attract, people who have these traits that we don’t acknowledge in ourselves. That’s projection.

So Libra is also about learning about ourselves, through others.

All We Need Is Love

But there is another side of Libra. LOVE. Libra is ruled by Venus, the planet of love. Ultimately, after we go through conflict and negotiation, we learn to really open up and allow another individual to enter our universe.

Our strongest need in life is the need for wholeness. Beyond differences and conflict, life is just better when we share it with a companion. It can be your spouse, a business partner or a good friend.

But to find love, to become whole again, we need to let go of our Ego, more exactly, we need to be open to change our identity. When you allow another person to enter your world, you will finally be whole, but you will not be the same person you were before.

The Full Moon in Libra on April 19 will help us move from the identity-searching Libra archetype to the love-embracing Libra archetype.

Venus, the ruler of the Full Moon in Libra is in the last degree of the zodiac in Pisces, ready to close a chapter in your life.

The Full Moon is also opposite Uranus, the planet of freedom and liberation. Uranus is conjunct the Sun, helping us to break free from the prison of the Ego.

The Sabian symbol of the Full Moon in Libra is “Three mounds of knowledge on a philosopher’s head”. The symbol implies the fulfillment of philosophical understanding. The puzzle comes together.

The Full Moon in Libra can help you understand something profound about yourself and others. You may finally understand why you are attracted to the same people over and over again. Or why you always run into trouble with your bosses.

Once you have this breakthrough, you can finally appreciate people for who they are – not as a reflection of you, but as individuals on their own. And when you release them from judgment, you allow them to enter your life. And life’s just better when we share it with others.
