As a Blair's fan it was frustrating watching the show (I stopped watching it in s3 and came back because of these two) because the writers mostly showed us the worst parts of her thanks to the horrible way she was treated by the people who were supposed to be her best friend and her bf. The only time we could see glimpses of her true personality was when she was with Dan. And it was so refreshing to see her so happy during the time they were together. Leighton really gave her all to show how happy and loved she felt with him.

Same goes with Dan. As Penn said, when he was with her he was brighter.

The funny thing about dair shippers arguing that Blair was really in love with Dan (for, like, three episodes?!) in season 5 is that Blair literally says to Chuck before her wedding to the prince that she loves Chuck more and more every single day of her life. Meanwhile, she literally can't express verbal affection for Dan at all

exactly!! her verbally expressing her love for chuck is a major plot point and when they're together she says it repeatedly and easily. she even says it when they're not together so there's literally no doubt about how much she loves chuck at any given time. saying she loves him more and more everyday imo is the ultimate expression of this, bc it doesn't matter what happens with their relationship she truly loves him and that's all there is to it.

when she's with dan however, she can barely compliment him let alone express affection or love. I wanna take a moment to talk about how I've seen dair fans claim blair saying "[her] heart belongs to someone else" was her way of saying she loves dan and how it's not true. gossip girl isn't a show of subtleties or implications, it's a show with explicitly clear dialogue about characters' feelings about each other. like I said blair and chuck expressing their love for each other was a central plot point for s2 and after that they express it freely between each other, and comfortably say those 3 words, 8 letters. if the show wants the viewer to know how a character feels they'll tell u, whether it's love or hate or anything in-between. the gossip girl writers explicitly never have blair say she loves dan. it's a visible conscious choice bc she canonically doesn't love him. there's no doubt, there's no well that was her way of saying it. blair had no trouble expressing her love for chuck repeatedly, she even says she loves louis in a way, and she says she loves nate in s1. if she loves dan she would've said it, loudly clearly and explicitly. why would she have no trouble saying the phrase I love you to and about 3 different men (I'm different ways true, but she still says it) but suddenly resort to implications or vagueness with dan? why after spending an entire year trying to get chuck to say he loves her when dan says it after 5 minutes would she not say it back if it was how she felt? why would she ignore it, and then tell serena that she wants the next person she says those words to to be the last, meaning that even if she did say it to dan she can't picture a future with him or want to be with him long term (she also says she's "not ready" to say it bc of this, so she obviously hasn't been in love with him for any of s5 bc she could've just... said it at any point)? truthfully I don't understand why, over a decade after s5 ended and which made it very clear she never loved dan in any way, it's still being claimed she did. the writers couldn't really have made it any clearer that she barely liked him, let alone love him, and that it was the complete opposite of how she feels about chuck

Please ignore if you've already been asked this but can you talk about why you love brucas even more than dair? i ship both too and get why most prefer dair but brucas just gives me even more feels, there's something so warm, sweet and touching about them. i can't explain it but know that you'll be able to!

I mean, it definitely depends on the person. I think Brucas is controversial for a lot of reasons. It's common knowledge that they weren't endgame. Knowing all along that their reunion is just another detour to the supposedly inevitable Lucas/Peyton endgame and seeing Julian just overall being a more loyal love interest, it's easy to think less of the Brooke/Lucas relationship. Some fans struggle a lot with fictional cheating. While I don't like it and hate seeing it affect my ships, I mostly view it as a trope that's going to occur whether I like it or not. In real life, you never know for sure if a cheater is remorseful or has changed. But in fiction, you can get into their heads and see the POV. Basically, this is why I was able to get on board with Brucas during seasons 2 and 3. It honestly seemed like Lucas regretted his actions and was working to be better both for himself and because it's what Brooke deserved.

But needless to say, I agree with all of your points. It's nothing against Dair. I think their relationship was great for what it was. They're still one of my all time favorite ships. But at the same time, I'm much more attached to One Tree Hill than I am to Gossip Girl. The characters in OTH feel much more real to me. Brooke and Lucas are no exception. It's the classic opposites attract pairing. He's very introspective and sees the world in a very single minded sort of way. She's the life of the party and has never been taken seriously by anyone. Except Peyton I guess, but season 1 was kind of inconsistent where their friendship was concerned. Both of them deeply desire love and weren't getting the support they needed from at least one parent. There's this great chemistry between them that's pretty undeniable. As much as I hate to say it considering how badly things played out between the two in real life, Chad and Sophia vibed as actors. Lucas never saw Brooke coming. For him, it was supposed to be Peyton and only Peyton, the girl he'd been obsessed with for years. For Brooke, Lucas was initially just a potential conquest that was playing hard to get. But once they started to bond and truly get to know one another, it was obvious they'd gotten each other all wrong and had qualities that drew the other in. With Lucas, Brooke became more serious and in turn started to see that she was more than just her party girl reputation. With Brooke, Lucas loosened up and started to embrace life rather than being so judgmental and staying on the sidelines. It was Lucas's betrayal of Brooke and subsequent sketchy behavior that shook him out of this idea that he was somehow morally superior to the people around him.

In season 2, we see their friendship deepen. Brooke and Lucas confide in each other, sharing secrets and giving emotional support. When Brooke has doubts about embracing more worldly, empathetic parts of herself, Lucas is there to reassure her that she has layers and is capable of being everything all at once. Lucas falls in love with Brooke in a very beautiful, pure sort of way. Lucas knows that because of their romantic past, there's no chance he'll ever get Brooke back. And yet, she still loves him. As much as Brooke tries to escape her feelings for Lucas and the idea of love in general, she can't seem to let him go. Season 3 is amazing and frustrating for them in equal measure. It's like, the potential is there. At their best, they're emotionally connected and having a great time together. Lucas is doing all he can to earn Brooke's trust and prove he's deserving of it as Brooke is trying to accept Lucas has indeed changed and won't break her heart again. Midway through the season, it's clear both Brooke and Lucas see each other as their romantic future. They almost get there! But, by this point real life drama has gotten in the way and the writers are headed back to Lucas/Peyton. So at the same time, there's this part of Lucas that is unavailable to Brooke because the writers are adamant Peyton be this person for him. But even after their second breakup and Lucas supposedly confirming all of Brooke's fears that he secretly wanted Peyton over her all along, it never feels right or true. It feels as though Lucas settled for something simpler. Even though Brooke is supposedly incompatible with Lucas, it's her who wants to return to Tree Hill once she's found her success and eventually settle down with a family. Peyton wants the opposite, yet it's like the show repeatedly punishes and degrades Peyton to the point where, unlike Brooke, she desires Lucas over everything - even self respect. With adult Brucas, everything is so natural. They're able to open up to each other and relate to each other now that high school is behind them. The whole Angie arc and Lucas's involvement in it is one big tease. Because it's like, things could have easily gone that way. Lucas even considers calling Brooke to elope with him in Vegas mere hours after he comforts her in that same damn airport. So, I don't know. I love Brucas because they make me feel so much. I love what they inspire in each other. I love them for their potential. I can't help but be emotionally attached to this unfinished love story.

TL;DR: Brucas was fucked over by the narrative in spite of having amazing chemistry and development, yet somehow that's exactly the reason I'm so invested in them.

How do you think the show would be different if Vanessa was the 5th member of the core five instead of Chuck?

Ok, first off this is a great question. Second, I don't really know how to answer it sjdkahdj so this is more of a list of headcanons (?) of the show as it is (mostly) but adding Vanessa at points that I feel her pov would have been great or the dynamics had potential to be more interesting with her having a more prominent role also some wishful thinking because who cares

Putting in it under the cut because this got long

the show kinda had dan go to vanessa and serena to nate post breakup, but i think i would highligh this a lot more, nate and dan are bros, vanessa and serena still get their friendship moments à la age of dissonance, and there's a little bit of awkwardness with nate and vanessa dating, while dan and serena are there like ._.

Nate has money problems in season 2, so we get more Vanessa + Humphreys + Nate plots

I don't have a lot of ideas here but Vanessa's sister actually exists and interacts with the characters lmao

In s2-3 Blair and Vanessa have their moments of friendship, but I think it would have been interesting to see Vanessa, learning to manage the social aspect of college, and she is well liked, she starts becoming more popular without even realizing it. So now you get her family disapproving over college + Blair having to deal with Vanessa (and Dan) be more popular than her. I'm not a big fan of Enough about Eve, but that's kind of the dynamic, they are rivals, but while they are living in the same building and sharing classes, they learn a little bit about each other's lives

Blair is dealing with Cyrus and Aaron joining her family, meanwhile Vanessa's relationship to her family gets worse as she spends time in school which her family disapproves. Again there's a lot of potential for Blair/Vanessa parallels this season

Unlike Serena, Nate and even Dan (rip), Vanessa is not one to keep her opinions, so even tho she doesn't like Blair, she still talks to her about 🪑, and about how she should dump him

On that same note, Vanessa tries to comfort Jenny, and has a more of a big sister dynamic with her, and maybe even lets her stay with her when she is fighting with Rufus

Vanessa teaming up with Blair and Eric during season 3 while trying to stop Jenny's reign, meanwhile Blair and Vanessa working as reluctant allies

We have 2x19 weekend with the VanderBilts and thanksgiving "mmm whatcha say" scene, now I offer you, Vanessa's birthday dinner at the Humphrey's loft with the Abrams meeting Nate, and Serena. chaos ensues

Blair slowly starts adapting to college (and doesn't transfer because i say so), and slowly starts to consider both Dan and Vanessa friends (but she won't admit it or say it out loud); in general Blair and Vanessa have a similar dynamic to s2 dair, where they learn to tolerate each other for the sake of peace

Once the main college drama takes a step back, Serena and Vanessa start hanging out a lot more… before realizing that the reason they are hanging out more is because, Dan and Blair are suddenly hanging out a lot without telling them

Now we have the Pink Party but make it The One where everbody finds out™. We cut Charlie/Ivy of this plot and now we got Serena and Vanessa suspecting that Dan and Blair are having an affair and spying on them, the party plays out the same, except now, the confrontation at the end of the party is a lot more messy:

Serena is hurt because Dan and Blair are having a relationship without her, that as Blair puts it has "things that we coulnd't never do with you", her self doubt comes back in and her relationship with dan and blair is damaged

Vanessa is hurt for the same reason but it's the flipside of that, Dan and Blair like to watch movies, discuss literature, etc, things that SHE used to do with Dan; she is dan's best friend, she used to watch movies, tv and discuss things with her, they used to make fun of blair together!, and now he is pulling away from her while hanging out with the enemy™

Vanessa confronts Dan about hanging out with Blair of all people, Blair hears this, and we get a different dynamic: Blair gets hurt, because she actually started to consider Vanessa a friend, but apparently Vanessa doesn't (something like dair's "i stupidly thought that this fake friendship might be real" moment) and now it's Vanessa's turn to self reflect on the way she sees Blair :)

Assuming Jenny leaves in the same way as she does in canon, Vanessa would be a good way to deal with the Jenny + Dair issue. Vanessa's resistence to being friends with Blair and to Dan dating her might come from resenting how the s3 situation was handled, since Vanessa was really close to Jenny. So there's an opportunity to have Blair actually express her regrets over that to Dan and Vanessa.

Vanessa and Serena stay together to comfort each other over Dair being a thing. They both help with each other's self doubts, they start going to the movies! making art! just hanging out! and this helps Serena to realize her value in these areas and now we set the stage for Serena to choose a carreer/work/or thing to do aside being someone's wife and the It girl. And Vanessa starts feeling like maybe she belongs more into the group as she and Blair solve their issues, Dan starts hanging out with her again and her relationship to Serena becomes stronger

Since she remains a main part of the group, there's also the possibilities of having Serena and Vanessa being friends and then in season 5 adding angst by having the Vanessa/Nate/Serena love triangle while Serena moves on from Dan

While Dan is The Outsider of the show, after Rufus and Lily get married, money is a lot less of an issue, so Vanessa would be the character that continues to confront the rich characters. And we could also add the tension of Vanessa and Dan growing apart now that Dan is fitting in a lot more and doesn't have the same problems and perspectives he used to have

Ivy kinda comes as a Jenny/Vanessa replacement, so having Vanessa as a main, kinda allows Ivy's existence to be even more useless, so we can also take her out lol

Since Vanessa is more of a presence, regardless of if they stay together or break up, Nate now has someone who is constantly challenging him so he questions his decisions a lot more and never joins the Spectator amen 😌

This is waaaay too optimistic lmao but Vanessa seems to be a lot more lgbt… so i like to think that having her and her sister/family have a stronger presence brings a little bit more queerness that is not "diversity win! the r*pist is bisexual!". I mean even Vanessa just hanging out with Eric would be great

I know the s3 threesome is cursed, but again, Vanessa has the only wlw kiss (as far as i can remember), we could explore this in a more serious way 👀 and have a main character be canonically queer (i'm not counting eric as main here)

I've heard people say that Vanessa is useless in the show, but the thing is that she is the character that directly opposes the UES way of thinking. The Humphreys tend to either fully become part of the UES (marrying Lily, Dan's whole Inside deal, Jenny's acceptance of Constance's politics, Rufus and Dan's desire to go to an ivy league, etc) or just quietly disagreeing with it (making comments, pointing out how messed up some things are, or just going back to Brooklyn). Vanessa offers a more proactive take when interacting with the UES, she confronts the Humphrey's non existent version of the elite and represents their world before joining it. That's why the writers didn't know what to do with her once they decided to commit to the more cynical view

honestly most of them I create on the spot these days, and if I change them later I save the name in an archive so I can peruse later. I also have the kind of brain that holds onto information that I like so if I find a name or think of a name that makes me happy I don't forget it and then when I have the opportunity later I use it. but since you're about to cry I will now break down options in bullet points because I always wanted to be your hero.

also please get some sleep I think you need it. and not sleepy. I know you always need me, I'm a treasure, but get some sleep also. you work very hard and deserve it. do not sacrifice sleep for naming characters. do not do that. okay. points.

option 1: browsing!

I'll do name browsing and it's like window shopping. I'm not here to find a particular name, I'm here to get ideas and look at stuff. the sites I use are

and there's like, a generator for everything so you could also just search for it and it probably exists

and okay, maybe you are shopping. that's fine too.

option 2: stealing! part 1

steal from real people! people you know, people you don't know, people whose online orders you pack at work if you're me - somebody was named Lucretia Silverthorn, which was insane - people you see at the grocery store or whatever and you're like oh right, I love the name Kenzie or whatever

option 3: stealing! part 2

but this time not from people! I'm a huge fan of "nature names" be that trees, flowers, colors, animals, gemstones, seasons/times of day/months, etc. (evie's last name is veery, which is a bird. all the characters in dirt in the doing pretty much, magick story in general)

option 3: make stuff up! going out for ice cream after window shopping

I have viewed so many names from so many different countries and also my brain just likes making up syllables so it's not hard for me to do the made-up fantasy name thing. some of my characters with on the spot names are:

Zan, Wryn, Rhea, Imire, Jaf, Kena, Kyt, Jemmi, Sardha, Vern, Idrian, Yashel, Dair, Ghand, Eksel, Abari, Myr

option 4: recycling! easier done when one of the above steps is already accomplished

Blair pretty much confirms she loves Dan when making her decision with Eleanor. The bigger problem is Dan easily believed Serena and slept with her. Which means Blair did him pretty dirty during their relationship time for him to not be surprised and THEN it did end up being true. Blair was on the roof with Chuck professing her love. So she made a mess of her love life and trust will always be the issue in the future. It wouldn't be love like Chair fans like to believe. Blair wasn't even sure of her decision in Season 6 until the reveal of the sex tape. Chair divorces imo long term but not idea if dair would ever work in the future because of the trust thing.

Yeah I mean dair would def have a lot of issues they need to work out post canon, but c/hair...like idk. My thing with c/hair is that I can understand when c/hair fans are like "I love toxicity in couples it's fun!" I don't personally find c/hair fun but I can get why someone else might like their toxicity. But when they act like they're *true love* and soulmates or whatever that's when I'm like...wait you guys actually think c/hair could ever have a healthy dynamic? That's not a joke??? Like I'm sorry but there's no way you will ever have a healthy relationship based off of lies and scheming and constantly one upping each other. And yeah! Blair chose two different men over Chuck in s5, like you mention she was still unsure if she made the right choice by dumping Dan the first half of s6, Chuck spends all of s6 making excuses about why he can't be with Blair and then they only get married so they can't testify against each other after letting Bart fall off a building???? And then they seemingly get pregnant almost immediately after the series end and...yeah idk how anyone could look at all that and be like "they're gonna have a happy marriage <3"
