Result from the Pierre Shale formation #Paleostream.
We covered here mostly the Sharon Springs member which is, these days, it's own formation within the Pierre Shale group.
With this piece we finally have a classic bait ball piece in this series, although the bait ball animal, Stratodus, is certainly not a classic.
As you can see from the size chart, we left quite a few famous taxa out because we think these might be better suited for another WIS formation stream when it comes to it.

Among other questionable choices, I have decided that 'the sea' is my all-purpose tumblr tag for maritime stuff, naval and nautical history and aesthetics—but only for salt water.
Great Lakes naval history, etc. goes under 'great lakes,' if not the name of the individual lake (and whither the Battle of Lake Champlain?) I don't even have a consistent tag for important rivers.

Also known as the X-fish or the Bulldog fish, Xiphactinus swam the Western Interior Seaway during the Late Cretaceous, and was probably one of the most terrifying fish to ever exist. Not only did it grow up to 20 feet long, it turns out to have an attitude as ugly as it's face; specimens have been found having choked to death on fish way too large for their gullets, and it's likely that their own kind would have been on the menu as well.

The St. Lawrence Seaway has shut down as hundreds of workers walked off the job Sunday.
The halt is expected to affect cargo shipments immediately along the artery that runs between Montreal and Lake Erie.
In a release shortly after midnight on Sunday, the union said they were unable to reach an agreement with the employer by the strike deadline, despite negotiations "right up to the last moment."
"We cannot allow workers' rights to be compromised. We remain open to discussion and hope that the employer will reconsider its position for the good of all," Daniel Cloutier, Unifor's Quebec director, said in a release.
