Stand Showcase #14: Second Wind
Tumblr media
"Safe and sound" This is SECOND WIND, the Long-Range Support Stand, and 12th of the 18 Stands your main character can play.
"The Meticulous Stand"'s ability automatically activates based on the user's "bad feelings", generating minature tornadoes to prevent them from anything they feel is dangerous, whether this be founded or unfounded. Once these tornadoes are generated, the user can freely move them around and change their shape.
However, Second Wind's true potential comes from its ability to be temporarily granted to another person, allowing them to surpass the one stand rule in exchange for leaving the original user completely defenseless. However, a new user of Second Wind has less control over the stand than the original user, and can only return it to the original user when they do not feel like they are in any danger, and thus cannot give it back during a battle.
Gameplay-wise, Second Wind has a fast and defensive gameplay style, with its tornadoes primarily acting to protect the user from any harm. Of course, the main interesting details come from the Lending mechanic, granting an ally an immense buff at the cost of making the original user practically useless in combat - which, of course, can't be avoided by slotting them out of the party, since they're the player character. This ability is particularly useful in scenes in which the PC is not able to participate in the same battle as other characters, with the stand's long range allowing the support it provides to help anywhere an ally goes.

Second Wind - Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Arrival
"Answer me right now. What are you doing here?"
Quartz Quadrant had never been the most bustling environment around. Being from a rarely accessible world will tend to do that. Yet even within the Little Planet's own confines, and unconventional means of existence, the verdant lakes and vivid caverns had remained completely distant from frenzy. Whereas Palmtree Panic promised coastal fun, and Stardust Speedway provided urban dazzlement, here there was simply... peace.
That it was the perfect spot to perfect her abilities was merely the cherry on top.
Verte Sinople was not passing through. She had lived in this tranquil territory for some time, and though her choice of living was hardly an adrenaline junkie's wish come true, she wouldn't have it any other way. Not a single regret ever crossed her mind: financial stability was no concern for her, and there was no need, or any real desire for that matter, to participate in the riff-raff of society. She had no intent to engage with anyone from beyond.
Unfortunately for her, she had to do that last part today regardless.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause a ruckus," the horse muttered politely, her hands in the air while she focused with muted yet visible concern on the staff that was pointed ominously in her direction. "Just admiring the views, is all. I didn't know that anyone actually lived in this splendid place."
Verte's frown persisted. So did the arm pointing her weapon. With all that the quadrant boasted, it was easy to assume the worst for someone who was by no means willing to trust at the drop of a hat. History gave her little reason to, and lest we forget, anyone else even being here at all was highly irregular and suspicious all in itself.
"Planning to strip this land of its resources for your own selfish gain?" The tenrec let out a proud laugh. "Ha! You wouldn't be the first to try."
The horse's ears perked up in shock. Was that a common intention around here? Although to be fair, she did know one person who tried exactly that... Her mouth moved twice before letting any words come out, indicating that she had to think for a little bit longer on how best to de-escalate the proceedings. If it was deemed necessary, she could handle herself, but she'd prefer for it not to come to that.
"No, madam, I'd never dream of something so ghastly." She lowered her hands despite the potential danger she was in, and she even had the audacity to let out a soft chuckle. "Honestly, the most I'd ever ask from here are a couple of photos, since it's not every day you can do that with the past."
"You're from a different time?" Verte's eyes squinted, and she didn't take long to put two and two together. She shifted her head to the left ever so slightly, as her suspicion continued. "But no one has used the warp plates since... hmph, anyway, you need incredible speed for them to be of any use. You hardly seem like the fastest around, how did you manage to harness their power?"
The equine bit her lip, having known that this query was bound to come up. The truth was, there was really no graceful explanation, for her lack of traditional speed was a harsh reality of which she was far from unaware of. All she had to overcome it were her wits, and a little help from her whip.
"...I tried really hard," she lamely admitted, as she tugged on the left corner of her cape. A bashful snort escaped her nostrils. "Took a few attempts, heh. It was a quite an ordeal finding the right slopes, I almost ended up face first in dirt a couple of times..."
Before the tourist could continue sharing the details, she was momentarily distracted by the tiny figure that revealed their face behind Verte's left leg. She recognized right away that it was none other than a Chao, which she evidently was not expecting to see hanging around in the Little Planet... though even from a small distance, she could tell that they seemed to be no ordinary Chao. Certainly, they could come in many forms, but it wasn't often that they had what looked to be green crystals hanging by the sides of their heads. Conversely, this extraordinary detail didn't seem to faze the taller lady, as this was not so rare in one specific corner of her own world.
Soon though, she went right back to being taken... aback, when - after a moment of what may have been hesitation - the Chao strolled over to her, which alarmed the tenrec instantly.
"Wait, Verita!" she called out with a concern that contrasted her prior demeanour. "You don't know what she could-"
She stopped herself, as the horse merely knelt down - albeit very slowly, which she found most peculiar - and began petting the Chao like it was just another day. The tenrec's glare shifted at this turn of events, with antagonism having its seat swiftly taken up by confusion.
"Well, hello there, Verita," the horse's voice cooed, as she wasted no time whatsoever in giving the Chao some appreciated chin scratches and belly rubs. "Aren't you the most precious little being..." The Chao laughed in all their innocence, which made her close her eyes in satisfaction, though she was sure to notice beforehand that their body appeared to be glowing brighter as she played with them.
Verte stood there, unsure of what to make of this. Though it calmed her to see the Chao so giddy, the tenrec herself wouldn't let her guard down so easily. For all she knew, this could be nothing more than an elaborate ruse. She positioned her staff beside her, its orb facing the sky, but her vision stayed perfectly still.
Before she could contemplate further on how to proceed, she abruptly noticed the six other Chao who casually waddled their way past her left and right towards the new green gal on the block. Perhaps the noise of the first Chao's laughter provoked a reaction, because clearly they wanted in on that belly rub action. And who was she to disappoint them?
"Oh, there's more of you?" The horse giggled blissfully. "Good grief, you're all just as beautiful! It's like I'm back in Viridonia..."
"Viridonia?" Verte muttered quietly. Her eyesight focused on itself as she thought about that name, as though a vague recollection sprung to mind. Still, it didn't take long for it to return to the sight of the pony pampering the mildly translucent children.
Verte watched diligently, with her staff held firmly. The last time someone else made contact with the Chao, they were mindless instruments of terror built by a madman. To this day, she could recall the urgency she felt during that tumultuous invasion with complete clarity. Though some may consider it much, she had every reason to exhibit caution… not to mention, she remained far from accustomed to another individual's presence within her domain. It was not exactly the sort of thing that occurred every Thursday, to say the least.
However, next to ensuring the safety of her little friends, she paid equal attention to the body language of this new presence. It was true that anyone could fake the persona of affability so long as it became convenient for them: she had enough firsthand experience to prove it. Yet… as the equine let out a soft smile to one of them latching onto her gloved elbow, while another one giggled as it hid not-so-discreetly under her cape, Verte saw a mixture of emotions running through the horse's brown eyes. They had a story to tell, one that she couldn't quite pinpoint the details of, but however you may describe it, it was something that not even the most brilliant actor in the world could fake, and you certainly couldn't fabricate the carefree joy radiating from each member of the little tribe. Surely, if this was how it was...
Verte's posture did not falter. Yet her grip on the staff lessened. And after a few more silent seconds, she finally lowered it altogether. Her half-lidded gaze only went so far to mask her obvious bewilderment.
"They trust you..."
The equine looked up attentively, and so did her ears.
"They play with those who they trust," Verte continued, the surprise having still manifested on her face. She slowly raised a finger to her chin. "They've never met you before, and yet..."
"You must be their guardian, I presume." The horse's smile appeared once again, even as one of the little rascals temporarily blinded her by pulling her headscarf down, to which she raised back up without skipping a beat. "You're protective of them, and they appear rather comfortable around you in turn."
Verte tilted her head. This person certainly had a keen sense of recognition on her, which she didn't see often, or at least, not from her own very limited experiences with people. Nonetheless, she held her nose up high.
"Naturally," she agreed with a palpable hint of pride, before she raised a somewhat dramatic hand to her hip. "I live to protect these sacred creatures from devastation. None shall ever bring harm to them, unless they choose to invoke my wrath. So, if you're no threat to them... then who are you?" She motioned with her staff towards the purple brooch on the horse's cape. "Royalty?"
"No, just Trudy," she stated nonchalantly, which made Verte raise an eyebrow at the modest declaration. She combed her left fingers through her ponytail. "It's really Lutrudis, but my friends call me Trudy. You can call me that too, if you'd like." She bowed her head with a hand by her chest, to which the Chao on the foot of her left boot happily replicated two seconds after.
"Well then... Lutrudis," Verte bluntly started as she turned around, her skirt having briefly swept around in tune to the sudden movement. Whether she chose to ignore the newcomer's restrained glimpse of amusement was not entirely clear. "I'm Verte Sinople, and I welcome you as a guest."
Before Trudy could even begin to thank Verte, the tenrec looked back from over her shoulder, as her mouth slowly morphed into a little smirk. "Pray that you don't betray our sanctuary."
Trudy, knowing better than to push her luck, simply looked at her for a moment, before finally nodding. The weight of the Chao crawling all over and around her must have not been too strenuous on her sensitive limbs.
"I won't," she promised, as her eyes melted once more at Verita, who let out another infectious laugh.

Now that Zero Punctuation is over, I want to immortalize it with some of Yahtzee's best quotes. God speed you magnificent British bastard.
"Those who had the random chance of being born white in the first world are the most privileged fucking people on this unequal fucking planet and Call of Duty is just those people complaining about how hard life can be when everyone's jealous of you."
"We live in an age where mass communication has counterintuitively turned all attempts at verbal debate into a basketball game where the teams are on different courts, racking up meaningless points and throwing shit over the dividing wall. That's why the only way you can safely express your politics these days is to anonymously spend money. That's how homophobic pizza joints can mysterious aquire a million dollars in donations. So two groups of middle class people annoy each other, Hatred makes tons of money, and the world at large gives less of a toss than a quadriplegic shot putter, good night!"
"The only reason I wanted to talk about it was the depressing inditement of modern gaming it creates. Not by itself, but by Value's indifference to this waterfall of piss trickling down its legacy's nose. Twenty years ago, Half Life was a focal point in gaming's ever-growing development as an artistic medium. The next few years saw a slew of titles that combined triple A game design with genuine emotional story. But what happened between then and now?! Why are the games rewarded with triple A status and income exclusively loot box infested live service bullshit designed not to stimulate our emotions, but to numb them and hypnotize us into lab rats mindlessly pawing the button that makes treats come out while games created with love drown beneath bottom feeders like Hunt Down the Freeman as Valve themselves, once habitual founders of new eras of narrative gaming just waves them on, barely glancing up from their tax paper work. What happened to you! What happened to us!? To the people we were supposed to become!"
"Hogwarts Legacy is by every definition of the phrase, a game made by cunts. As well as very literally a game made by a cunt."
"We really need a better term for shit like Gotham Knights than 'live service'. It sounds too much like a good thing. Being alive is good and so is being serviced. We can't let the publishers control the narrative on this one, they'd call a kick in the bullocks a key entertainment reinvigoration scheme. Hmmm, how about... cunts. Games made by cunts. Evil money grubbing cunts who make soulless, emotion deading skinner boxes deliberately designed to foster addictive behavior. Demonitize me YouTube, I don't care. And neither does my editor. Probably."
"We as gaming audiences have always separated games into the worthies and the unworthies. My dichotomy is this. Games that make you feel vs games that make you numb."
*Begins review* "Undertale is a good game." *Ends review*
"Let's all laugh at an industry that never learns anything, tee hee hee!"

Silent Hill 2 and the Hidden Costs of Remakes | Semi-Ramblomatic
Also recommend this shorter one. Really great food for thought on a game's choice of camera, the strengths and weaknesses of different types and how they can enhance or detract from the tone and vibe you're going for.
