Finally got around to make a tier list for the Master Detective Archives: Rain Code characters. Please note that these are just my opinion, and you are free to agree or disagree with me. Just please do not try to persuade my opinions to be in your favor (I hate that).

SPOILERS FOR THE GAME AHEAD!

S-Tier

You’ve seen my posts, I love the entire Nocturnal Detective Family Agency characters and group. I’ve been writing fics about them, and I just want to see more of their group dynamic whether in fics or the DLC or any adaptations (anime or manga) that the team will hopefully do in the future.

And just to clarify, no I do not condone Desuhiko’s perverted nature nor do I even relate. He is high on the list because of my bias with the group and because I love other positive traits he has (his bromance with Yuma and his loyalty nature). If anything, if I write Desuhiko, that perverted nature wouldn’t be focused at all, or the others would be trying to overcome his bad habit

Makoto is my favorite antagonist in the game. Honestly, he is more an anti-villain to me (someone who has good/noble intentions, but commits terrible actions in order to accomplish it), and kind of a protagonist of his own story. Someone I wish for better, and to become better. And I love Yuma’s and Makoto’s relationship in both game and the fics.

A-Tier

Shinigami in the Labyrinth is more memorable to me than when she is in the real world, especially in chapters 3, 4, and 5 when we saw more depth and character growth of her

Kurumi is a great supporting character, and I genuinely like her and Yuma’s relationship. I just wish we got to see more of her, or get a Gumshoe Gab like with the detectives (though it made sense why since Gumshoe Gab are technically flashbacks that happened between chapters)

Pucci is someone I relate and love and even wish she had survived. I love her motif for cute things (the teddy bear, her headphones) and her Forte feels so relatable to me

Yoshiko is like my favorite of the three girls, in terms of designs and personality

B-Tier

Kurane is just relatable is all

Shinigami in the real world is slightly less memorable to me except for her design and some of her commentaries and dynamic with Yuma

Rant time, but I believe some of the Peacekeepers deserved better writing and more screentime. It felt like they were only meant to meet requirements and be obstacles for Yuma and the detectives in both the real world and the Mystery Labyrinth. We don’t see them have more personal relationships with some of the detectives, or see them beyond the chapters they were in or even make a presence like Yomi and Martina even. Seth is the only one I’m fine with his writing because he at least gets some form of ending to his story in the game (I think), but it’s something. Swanks and Guillaume (and Dominic actually), I wish we had gotten more from them beyond their chapters, like what are their special roles in the Peacekeepers? Are they like commanders that follows directly Yomi’s orders? Do they have special jobs they have to do? I just wish we’ve gotten more of that.

Yomi is a great unlikeable villain we have gotten, he is like so twisted and evil and irredeemable and quite a threat towards the detectives. However, I feel like he was also overrated, mainly because I feel like he took up too much of the screentime and be the only main threat towards the detectives. The rest of the Peacekeepers (except Seth and Martina) feel like they were overshadowed completely, or barely threats since they never show up or have a presence like Yomi.

C-Tier

These range of characters are those that I like and served their roles well as support/minor characters in the story and don’t hold no ill will towards (except Fake!Zilch and Dr. Huesca, but that was the writers’ intents)

D-Tier

These characters are those I just don’t care, even the order it went doesn’t matter, I just have no emotions towards them whatsoever. Please don’t take what characters I chose the wrong way, it’s just how I personally feel

i like how in the rain code novel it's officially confirmed that desuhiko is bisexual. he falls for a goth lolita, finds out that he's actually a crossdresser, and still goes "wait no! i like boys too!" only to be turned down because the crossdresser isn't into guys. later, when desuhiko's telling yakou about it, yakou was like "nothing wrong with dating a guy right?" and desuhiko was like "what i said!! but he's straight!!" and the two of them share a moment over jilted love

so recently i just got the two official manga for rain code, and also ive been scanlation editing the rain code corocoro gag manga, and the difference in how yuma is drawn is so funny to me

just look at manga yuma... he's looking at you with his big adorable wet doe eyes, so incredibly small and precious and sweet. he looks like you could just hold him in the palm of your hand and feed him berries and oats. and then when you pat him on his little eeminy meeminy head he'll give you the biggest brightest smile and tell you everything is gonna be okay

meanwhile corocoro yuma looks like an insomniac caffeine addict that is about to start biting people

I came to this realization recently (and I'm not tryna accuse the show crew of anything whatsoever) but... are the Munce intended to be black-coded? Like seeing these guys w/ frohawks or locs... it's definitely Odd I think? Like I can't be the only one who feels like Somethings a bit foul here.

Okay, on a second playthrough of Rain Code and I really got a better look at Martina's mindset in general.

I honestly forgot how genuinely power hungry and downright diabolical she is. It's honestly mesmerizing how into her power trip she is during Chapter Two's case. She's so confident, she even licks an open jar of poison just to make a point that it's expired.

Now the reason why I don't recall her power trip and destructive, cruel nature was because it was all wiped away as soon as Yomi ordered her executed for making him look bad. In a second, Martina's terrified and pathetic and in the same way as Seth Burroughs, her fate left unknown to the viewer until Chapter Four.

It makes me think about how police forces are pretty much conditioned and told to go buck wild, to show no mercy, to enact cruelty and subjugation on civilians until they get their way. They get off on it. It's a power trip. Anyone who tries to show restraint on the force is routinely harassed until they quit or find themselves in trouble.

And this is what I really like about Martina as a character. There just isn't any excuse for her. She wanted power and control. She enjoyed it. Being an Amaterasu Peacekeeper gave her a way to enact power over others. Kissing up to Yomi, who I'm pretty sure her "love" and "adoration" for was quite shallow, gave her power and control. And it's addicting. It feels good.

Until she realizes that it's an illusion and someone like Yomi is just using her till he's done with her. She thought she endeared herself to him so much that she wasn't disposable like everyone else in Kanai Ward. But it isn't true and Yomi can just quite literally smash her up into a cube without a problem.

The next time we see Martina, she has undergone a lot of change. A near-death painful execution scare definitely pry your eyes open with a wrench and make you take a look at just how cruel you have been as well as the system you propped up.

She's self-reflective enough to the point that she tells Makoto she will resign from the Peacekeepers even though he says she doesn't have to (which is great in itself because it's powerful that Makoto stepping aside to let her make that choice *herself*). Martina orders the arrest on Yomi, but it's more than just sweet payback. She puts forward the example that criminals are human beings and meant to be treated with equality, fairness and respect. And it makes Yomi scream and lose his goddamn mind.

But more than that, Martina knows she isn't done with atoning, quits the Peacekeepers, and is aiding in rebuilding Kanai Ward. She gains autonomy and lets power go to become a better person.

And I loved every second of this arc. My only wish is that there were more moments of it... like maybe we could have seen her when Makoto stopped her execution because that would have been at her lowest. But as it stands, I knew there was always a reason why I adored and LOVED Martina Electro as a character. I've always been attracted to stories of attack dog type characters growing past what they were and becoming something new.

Martina is wonderful because she was an honest-to-god shitty cop who got an earth-shattering awakening that reshaped her entire morality until she became someone who renounced her need for power and actually aided the society around her. Love to see it.

Not strictly important: I would also let her fucking kill me.
