The devil's daughter.
They neared the academy, and Moon swerved down to land on a rocky ledge with a tree shadowing most of it. Noise. She had to immediately use her teardrop method to rid of all the voices. Her mother sat next to her and her tail flicked. "I don't want you to leave me here." Moon stared down at her mother. "I know," said her mother kindly. "But you have to. And it'll be good for you. I think you will like it more than the nightwing village, you'll see." 'At least the academy won't be full of nightwings,' her mind went on.
'Like I care what the other nightwings think about me now. They'll learn to love me.' "I don't mind the other nightwings that much." "Most of them are awful and you know it," Secretkeeper pointed out. Moonwatcher rolled her eyes and she heard her father grumble in her head. "Yes. I suppose they are sometimes." All the time. But she and father will fix that soon. Secretkeeper smiled tiredly and reached a small front paw up to her daughters' face. Having no choice but to precipitate in the gesture with the same love Secretkeeper has, Moon cranes her neck down and an appreciative rumble made its way out of her throat.
She loved her mother, she truly did. Her mother was the only thing that provided physical warmth throughout her short life and she was also the one who practically gave her her powers. So of course she loved her. "Alright, I think this has been enough observing. You should head in now." Secretkeeper keeper pulled her arm back and nuzzled her dragonet's cheek.Unable to avoid the inevitable, Moonwatcher sighed and nods. "Of course, mother." She says before nuzzling her mother back. 'Father?' Moon asked once she pulled back. 'Start to head in, dearest. They await you.' Darkstalker said, the cold yet comforting aura came with his voice and she welcomed it. Moon watched her mother jump into flight, the smoky black nightwing calling for her to write soon before flying away. Moon sighed and started to prowl forward. She didn't even get to the front of the cave entrance when a wirery nightwing, Fatespeaker, she remembered, stopped her.
"Hello! I'm fatespeaker, and you're moonwatcher right?" Moon nodded. Fatespeaker was on the smaller side, even with the food she had growing up, and believed she had powers. "Ah hah! I'm getting better at that! It's almost as if I'm reading your mind, huh?" Fatespeaker wiggled her talons at Moon, as she stiffled a chuckle and heard her father chortle in the back of her head. The dragon in front of her had no real powers, her father had told her the first time she came to the nightwing village.
"Almost." Moon responded polity. Being polite is something Darkstalker taught her, because apparently, its important. Fatespeaker giggled and gestured for Moon to follow her into the mouth of the cave. As they entered, Moonwatcher took note of everything surrounding her. Dragons saying hello, goodbye, all in the massive cavern. Stalagmites and stalactites formed pillers, to which the founders of the school had hung a sign saying "Welcome, students!" In purple flowers. Fatespeaker was muttering something besides her when her head pooped up. "Moonwatcher-"
"Moon."
"Moon, yes, of course. Second tunnel on the left, fifth cave to the right." She flicked her tail and grinned at Moon. "You're going to love your clawmates." 'Clawmates?' "Oh? What are... clawmates?" She asked as a pair of mudwings, slightly smaller than her, trampled by. "The dragons you will be sharing a cave with!" Fatespeaker responded energeticly. Moon had to hide her displeasure. 'Moon.' Her father growled in a warning. "Oh! Here come the icewings!" Of course, Icewings. Moon decided not to even grace them with a glance and headed for her tunnel before fatespeaker could say anything. Soon the tunnel straightened out, and Moon could see small cave openings along either side. This must be the corridor of sleeping cave; she could sense that some of them had two three dragonets inside already. Each cave she passed seemed to be bristling with chatter and wings and claws and spiky thoughts that amused her.Moon squeezed past a pair of chatting, bipedal sandwings. She ignored them. Moon passed by them, feeling the male's eyes on her. Moon chorted and entered her cave.
'Oh. It's nicer than I expected. What do you think, Darkstalker?' Moon set the scrolls given to her on the rack by the entrance and surveyed the cave. 'You could do better.' Darkstalker mused. Moon chuckled in her head. She made her way to the moss bedding, seeing as that was the most appealing bed option, out of the hammock and rocky ledge.
As she picked through the parchment scrolls, Darkstalker said; 'A little rainwing is about to burst in. Prepare yourself.' Moon sighed and turned just in time to see a blur of yellow and pink burst into her room, startling her."Hello!" The blur spoke. "HI! I'm so excited to be here! I just- my scales won't listen! Ack! My names kinkajou!" The small rainwing grabbed Moon's forearm and forcefully shakes it. "What's your name?" Kinkajou asked as she flew above her head. "Moonwatcher. But please call me Moon." She nodded to the little rainwing in greeting. "Oh! I've heard about you! You weren't there when I was being experimented on!" One of the rainwing experiment subjects. Moon never agreed with her tribe when it came to... that."Can I take the hammock?" Kinkajou asked. "Go ahead." Moon responded. Moonwatcher watched the young dragonet, she must be at least 3. She flicked her wing and headed towards the entrance of their cave. "I'm going to go to the libr-" Moon was cut off by some squabbling.Curious, kinkajou flew above her and purched herself on Moon's back, with the hulking nightwing didn't notice. Outside, 3 dragons, a mudwing, a seawing and a... skywing. A beautiful skywing, at that. Blood red scales, deep amber eyes... 'Darkstalker? Can you-' Moon started but was cut off by Darkstalker's amused laughter.'Yes, there are many futures of the both of you... as long as you are fast enough.' Were all prophets this cryptic? 'Fast enough?' Moon questioned. No answer. Moons above.
"Hey! Let's calm down now!" The mudwing, Clay, Moon recognized, had his wings flung out to put a barrier over the fighting dragons. The grayish blue seawing snorted at the skywing. "It's only the first day folks. You both most be hungry. Pike, walk with me. Carnelian, I'll talk to you later." Clay guided pike, the seawing down the tunnel and Carnelian, beautiful name, growled at him and prowled into her cave. Moonwatcher's cave. Moon, with kinkajou still on top of her, turned to see the skywing plant herself on the rocky ledge. "Hi!" Kinkajou blurted before Moon could say anything. "What's your name?" Kinkajou clambered up Moon's neck and draped her arms over her head. Carnelian barley glanced at them. Yep. Moon like her. "Her name's Carnelian, Kinkajou." She says to the little dragon. 'How does she..? Ugh, that big mudwing must of said it. Moons above.' Carnelian's mind grumbled. "It's nice to meet you, Carnelian." Moon said to the blood-red dragon. Carnelian mutters, "Yeah, whatever. Nice to meet you too, nightwing." The nightwing smiled and tucked her chin in.
Moon let out a small rumble, meant to catch Kinkajou's attention. The brightly colored rainwing tilted her head down and smiled. "I'm going to the library, do you want to come?" Moon couldn't help but smile at Kinkajou. Her smile was contagious.
"Sure!" Kinkajou chirped. Pleased, Moon turned to head out, but not with out smiling slyly at Carnelian. "Bye, Carnelian. See you at lunch, yes?" Carnelian lifted her magnificent head, scowling. "Whatever." She responded with a roll of her eyes. Moon will be seeing her at lunch, she knows she will. So, almost giddily, Moon walked out of the cave with kinkajou rambling on top of her head.

I like how Farsight and Secretkeeper spent around 3 pages interacting with each other and Secretkeeper flat up yelled at her in canon but then I headcanoned that they were best friends and then gal pals who probably kissed once. Tui never said it but Farsight probably admired Secretkeeper in a very haha isn't it so normal for girls to find other girls beautiful way and Secretkeeper probably had a man I wish I could date my best friend who is a girl moment but they didn't and now they take turns judging each other's questionable boyfriends.

Secretkeeper and Morrowseer to Careless Whisper But It's Dramatic (bardcore) by Mercury_

I honestly wish that the fandom talked more about the fact that Moonwatcher was PHYSICALLY NEGLECTED throughout her childhood.
Her mother, Secretkeeper, didn’t and/or wasn’t able to provide Moon with the proper amount of supervision and maybe even food Moon, while her daughter was living a potentially dangerous environment.
Secretkeeper left her daughter in alone in the rainforest for DAYS on end at a time since the night Moon HATCHED, with the only time she was able to be with Moon was for a few HOURS on the days she was able to be with her. That means that Moon, since the day she was literally BORN, was left for literal DAYS on end without the physical supervision of her own mother.
She was left alone for so long, in fact, that she literally had to LEARN how to HUNT for her own food HERSELF as a young dragonet, to the point that she became very good at it. Moonwatcher is 4 when she mentions this to Qibli, so there’s a good possible chance that due to her living situation, she had to hunt her own food when she was around ONE-THREE years old, around the same age that Anemone, or even MINK and DUSKY are right now!!!
And what really bothers me about this is the fact that Moonwatcher had to hunt for food and was left alone for the majority of her within the Rainforest - which is a potentially DANGEROUS environment to live in.
Like…think about it. The rainforest that the Rainwings live in is filled with POISONOUS frogs, that can make dragon unconscious, have hallucinations, and possibly even KILL you. There’s that also lots of hungry predators that could harm or even kill Moon, like Jaguars and Anacondas. And the rainforest also has dangerous parts within its environment, like quicksands, which are portrayed to be VERY dangerous in movie and/or book media, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re dangerous in wings of fire too, at least for a young dragonet who isn’t even a teenager yet. The rainforest has so very hazards, in fact, that there’s canonically a literal SCROLL written about the dangers of the rainforest within this series.
So imagine, a young 1-3 year old dragonet, being in risk of DYING from touching a poisonous frog or being eaten be a Anaconda while hunting for an animal or gathering fruit within the trees. Or Moon attempting to hunt her prey on the ground, in risk of her getting SCARRED or even EATEN by a Jaguar.
Moon has been left within the rainforest for so long to point that she had to search for food in a risky or even dangerous environment when she was the age of a literal CHILD.
So the fact that people don’t talk about, mention, or even possibly know about how bad Moon’s childhood probably was within the rainforest it is…quite sad and even a bit upsetting, honestly.
Of course, I do know that Secretkeeper didn’t have much of a choice of doing this to Moon, or at least knew it would be MUCH better if Moon lived in the rainforest alone, than living within the literal volcano instead.
Especially since leaving Moon to live within the rainforest is a much, MUCH better option than her living in a literal VOLCANO, an insufferable place where dragons gained severe asthma from, being forced to only eat only ONCE per week, with the only available food to eat being ROTTING prey that was alone for DAYS on end, and within the environment that is much more negative and controlling that living alone in the rainforest.
There’s also a good percentage of her that Secretkeeper did NOT even know about the dangers of the rainforest, due to the fact the Nightwing volcano is probably the ONLY place she ever lived or even knew about.
I’m also aware that Secretkeeper also didn’t visit Moon as much as she should within the rainforest because if she did so, there’s a good chance that Moon would be found and be FORCED to live within the volcano, and suffer living within the volcano along with the rest of the Nightwings.
HOWEVER, while this is true, it does NOT stop the fact that while Moon’s living situation within the rainforest is much better than what all the Nightwings had, it does NOT make her living situation - being physically NEGLECTED in a DANGEROUS environment - be ANY LESS bad as it is for Moon to go through.
It does NOT stop the fact that living within the rainforest ALONE for her ENTIRE LIFE until book 6 NEGATIVELY AFFECTED Moon, and that she was, indeed, was PHYSICALLY NEGLECTED since the day she was literally BORN, regardless of the context or reason to why this neglect happened and/or occurred. AND that fact that child neglect is a literally known to be a form of CHILD ABUSE, regardless if Moon’s mother wasn’t able to properly be there for Moon, or even possibly not having a choice on whether or not to NOT neglect Moon in this way.
And the saddest thing about this, is that there’s a possible chance that Tui did NOT fully realize that Moon, her very own character, living situation was as bad it was, since she didn’t explore Moon’s childhood trauma of living alone in the rainforest and how it currently affected her as much as other character’s - like Winter, Peril, Qibli, etc.,
Or at least not as much as how Secretkeeper telling and/or even possibly pressuring Moon to hide her powers or else other dragons would hate her for them, and Secretkeeper caring more about what dragons think about Moon without even considering or thinking about what Moon thinks about the other dragons she’s around.
I’m sorry that this confession is very, VERY long. I’m also very sorry if I had overreacted, overanalyzed, or overthought about any information within this confession.
I pretty much made this because I feel like people don’t at least mention that Moon’s childhood within the rainforest isn’t as great as some people might think, and/or not at least mentioned that Moon was unfortunately physically neglected - and maybe even mention that she was neglected within a potentially dangerous environment - regardless on whether or not Secretkeeper had a choice on doing so, or even if it possibly doesn’t count on whether or not Secretkeeper is actually a good mother to Moon or not, so I decided to make a this rant.
Thank you for everyone who went out of their day or night to read this confession and/or rant, and I hope you have a good day today :)
Anon asked me to include some images. They also noted that they have not read A Guide to the Dragon World yet.
